    720s 14 vs UX331UN

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:30 AM PDT

Am looking for a replacement for my dead surface pro 4, and have settled on the above as likely candidates. Had originally wanted the UX461UN, but it is out of my price range here in Germany.

I am currently leaning towards the 720s, however am concerned about the screen brightness and to a lesser extent the fan noise issue. Would be interested in thoughts of how it is to use as a general multimedia and light gaming machine.

Second choice is the UX331, which I know has a down spec'ed MX150, though don't expect it would be too bad for my purposes. Are there any other known issues with this device?

    Thanks!

    Which laptop to buy?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:21 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop to do light-medium gaming on as well as finish my masters in business. I am going to Korea so it will supplement me waiting a few months for my household goods to ship as well as my PC that I have. I am torn between two different laptops that I will link below. Please suggest which of the two you would pick in terms of performance, longevity, and customer service of the company. Thanks.

Considering Dell Inspiron, but would appreciate some help.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 05:56 AM PDT

Hey guys! Sorry to bother you, but it's yet another person looking for laptop guidance. My main question is posed as part of the answer to the last form question, but I've filled the whole form out as well.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Australia. $1500 AUD, but willing to go a little higher if it'll mean a big jump in quality.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Of those three, best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderately important. I don't want something excessively bulky or heavy. 3kg (6.6lb)is the heaviest I'll go, but I'd prefer something around 2kg (4.4lb)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Would prefer Windows as it's what I'm used to and I know nothing about other OS's. But if other OS's can do everything Windows can I'm open to learning them.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming. I don't need to be able to run the newest games on the highest settings, but I'd like to be able to play some older (1-2 years) AAA titles on at least medium/high. Some games I would be playing on this machine are Stellaris, Starcraft 2 and Civ 5/6

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Stellaris, SC2, Civ 5/6. At least on High. I've never actually paid attention to FPS in games so I'm not sure how to answer that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really. Don't particularly need any of those things but I'd of course like a good keyboard and decent build quality. I don't want something too flashy and "gamer" looking either.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming, which seems pretty along the lines of what I'm looking for (although on the heavier end weight wise). The 16GB version is on sale now for $1600. But I know nothing about laptops and it seems there's a few different iterations of them (http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-7567-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC) and I'm not totally sure which one I should go for, or even if the Dell Inspiron is the best option. Also I've seen that a bunch of new laptops are coming out in the coming months, so I'm not sure if I should try and get onto the Dell sale, or wait awhile and see what's coming.

    Thanks in advance :).

Which buy is better? I am torn

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:10 AM PDT

Which upcoming 15 inch laptop are you most excited for?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:01 AM PDT

Asking because I just picked up an XPS 15 on sale, but the color balance is uneven across the screen. The left side is significantly cooler than right side, and I'm a creative professional who needs accurate color for design, so that won't fly.

Since I'm returning it, I might as well wait for the new coffee lake laptops. What would you hold out for? New XPS 15, Aero 15, Spectre x360?

Usage for me: 4k video editing and design with Adobe suite, writing. A 4k screen is cool but I'm starting to think battery life would be better. But after 5 years on a 2012 Mbp Retina, it's tough to go to a lower ppi.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $2,000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 nice but not required. Good battery life would be great.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer something no heavier than the XPS 15 (4.6 pounds)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy video editing (4k). No gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality. Nice trackpad and keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can't stand edgy-looking "gamer" laptops. I wish the Aero didn't have the orange stripe on it.

Are PC Specialist Laptops Any Good?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 02:37 AM PDT

I'm possibly looking at getting a new laptop and I've come across the PC Speicalist Optimus VIII laptops which seem to be very cheap compared to their counterparts. What are the downsides to them as compared to ASUS ROG or Gigabyte laptops? When configured to match rough specs, they're still around £100-£250 cheaper than competitors.

    Spec for reference: 1TB HDD, XGB SSD, i7 770HQ, Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB GPU, 8GB - 16GB RAM

    ThinkPad vs Mi Laptops

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:06 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

Recently I was convinced to buy a laptop but I went into some sort of problems.

One major problem was that I have used a ThinkPad in the past and I have loved the keyboard, but now I was introduced to the Xiaomi's laptops that are known to be well build and MacBook like.

To be short with you guys, I need a laptop to do alot of writing, light Photoshop/illustrator, light gaming - RuneScape/maplestory/LoL etc.., and that means a simple or entry level dgpu.

    I found 2 options:

    Lenovo ThinkPad e570 with 940mx, i5 7200u, 256 SSD nvme, 8gb ram ddr4

    Or

Xiaomi mi air 12.5/13/pro with same specs altoght the CPU is i5 8xxx series and mx150

    Both are the same price.

If someone could advice me or tell me their experience with those laptops I'll be really thankful.

Also, how the Xiaomi's keyboard feels against the Thinkpad's keyboard.

    Thanks!!

New HP laptop with 100% disk usage - possible fix at least in my situation

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:00 AM PDT

To begin with I had updated all the drivers and tried several of the fixes for 100% disk usage found on the internet. I had tried clean installs also.

    I have a HP 17z laptop.

I replied with this answer to someone else's post. I figured I would put here also just in case it helps anyone else. I wish it was a more concrete fix and I am still not sure if its fixed. Only several days will confirm that.

A possible fix???? Maybe for my situation but to early to tell

I had reinstalled Windows Home 10 via USB stick a couple of times. I would still get the 100% disk usage issue. During those installs it seem to find everything except something to do with AMD( laptop has separate video card). I would do windows update and separate updates and it wouldn't find it. Looking around the internet I would find the drivers

In the end still 100% disk usage. And I did try a bunch of the fixes to no avail.

So I decided to try installing Windows 10 Pro. At first I couldn't do this because the Windows 10 setup looks at your UEFI to determine which version of Win 10 to install. So I found a little file to add to the USB stick that would allow me to pick Win 10 Pro during setup.

So I installed it knowing that I wouldn't be able to activate it. I could run it however long enough to see if there was a difference. The Win 10 Pro install found all the drivers before I even had a chance to really start doing updates. Now in the past installs it could be 5 mins or over 30 minutes before 100% disk usage issue would appear.

I did all the updates installed the few things that I add to a new PC. Still no 100% disk usage issues. Now I was going to wait for the 2018 Spring creators update to see if that fixed it. The laptop however ran fine for a few hours

Hmmmm.... got to thinking. So I am a glutton for punishment. I went and reinstalled Win 10 Home on the laptop, While not as quick to find all the drivers it did find them. After all the updates and added programs, once again no 100% disk usage issues.

Only thing different that I did this time was make that minor modification to Win 10 USB Install flash drive. Also it was a few days later from my last install( so maybe new drivers?????) and maybe something was in the updates.

I let the laptop run overnight and no issues. I thought I had it fixed before but the next time I turn it on......100% disk usage. So when I get home after work it will be interesting to see what happens when I power it on.

Best PC Laptop under $500 for running adobe creative suite, mainly Photoshop, Indesign, and Illustrator

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:15 PM PDT

Longtime Mac user here. I have never bought a PC before and the last Mac I bought was a 2010 Macbook Pro. I am in between jobs and I need a laptop for some free lance work till May.

I plan on buying a Mac or building a desktop after May, so I am really just looking to buy a PC laptop under $500 to use in the mean time. (Afterwards I'm going to give it to my parents, they will just be using it for basic internet and general purpose business type things).

Are there any brands I should avoid or any models that will absolutely not be good for these programs? Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Tl;DR My question is essential what is the best laptop I can buy for under $500 that can run the creative suite reliably and seamlessly.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -$500 United States of America-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Good battery life, enough RAM to run bigger programs mainly the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign) and storage to save high quality files and graphics. Thing 300 ppi files for print.-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not that important.-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -N/A-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign) Possibly very little video editing on premier-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -N/A-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Good track pad, but not super important cause I have a mouse I like. Good screen quality would be nice but is not necessary-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -N/A-

    Thanks.

Looking for a power bank compatible with dell xps 13 (9350)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:40 PM PDT

I like this laptop a lot but my biggest complaint (besides the awful QHD scaling) is the short battery life. I am looking for a low cost high quality (<$100 CAD) power bank that I can travel with to extend battery life.

I see RAVPower 26800 PD Power Bank 26800mAh on Amazon.ca but in the notes it says "Incompatible with HTC 10 and HP Spectre and Dell XPS 13" which is disappointing.

I have a new laptop MSI GP62MVR 7RFX-1030CA, any suggestions for apps on Windows 10? Integration suggestions between PC and Phone are appreciated

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:21 PM PDT

I have an MSI GP62MVR 7RFX-1030CA. I also have a brand new Windows 10 Gaming rig that I built all from scratch (if you are interested in the parts I have I can happily post what I have! )

I also finally told Apple to go fuck off and eat raw scallops and bought myself a Razer Phone (Android FTW).

On my computer, I am running the following apps that are utility based apps (my favorite type of apps) and always looking for ways to optimize my PC for gaming purposes.

Similarly, I am looking to do the same for my laptop and quite honestly am confused with Windows 10 and all the settings that exist out there. I am looking for what apps you guys have used successfully, what apps you enjoy using, what apps have you used that sort of optimize your laptops/pc from all sorts of angles (for example installing drivers in batch updates, optimizing broken file images that don't match the application in question etc)

Also just looking for generally suggested apps that the PCMR community has come together to say "Hey you NEED this or you're still a pleb".

Furthermore, if you use any add-ons you suggest for Chrome on PC (for example Grammarly) or for your Android phone (for example, cannot remember what it's called, but that app that blocks youtube ads for instance), all suggestions about this category would also be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, any suggestions for apps that are nice to use that make life easier for integrating between PC, to laptop to phone? I'm all for continuity (i.e. easily pick up shit from one to the other) and looking for the best possible apps that can offer this experience. My razer phone runs Nova Launcher by default and Android Oreo 8.1 is incoming very soon.

Without further or due... here are the apps I was told to get from the get-go that I use on my laptop and PC...

    -Tron

    -Tweaking AIO

-WSUS (not sure why I would need the server update for windows 10)

-SDI Origin (not sure if this is safe to use or not so would need your input on this, otherwise any other suggestions would be good)

-PatchMyPC ( I hear that this is pretty limited compared to SUMO but then SUMO wants you to pay for pro version otherwise you gotta go to each manufacturer's website to download suggested drivers)

Again, I realize this post is huge and I do apologize. I am asking for a lot but at the same time I am looking to get the ultimate suggestion guide from everyone in this community so I can maybe compile a much better post where I can link this entire post over there and credit all of you for the amazing help you are about to give me. Also, I do realize I asked for help on the matter of Android Phones but to be honest I am thinking that there is nothing wrong in this question since I am asking for integration/app suggestions to use between Android and Windows in order to better enhance the Master Race experience when on the go!

    Thanks again and cheers!

    Recommendations

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:08 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new PC that used solely for big data sets in excel and other software programs. Some of my files are over 30gb and my Mac and their version of are very difficult to work with. I'm looking at around the $500 range and I don't mind if it's refurbished. What are some recommendations for where to find that and what to look for?
