How do the generic drivers work in distros like Ubuntu etc? Why is it so hard to replicate this in Windows?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:16 AM PDT

Sorry if this is a really silly question - I have been using Ubuntu with MATE desktop for a while and everything has been working fine, the computer I'm using was shipped with Windows 8, updated to Windows 10, I got it from a friend and just installed Ubuntu straight away as I didn't want to deal with the privacy issues in Windows 10 etc.

Recently I've needed to use Windows only software a lot for work and it doesn't run well through WINE. So, I decided to dual boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu, keeping a free partition for files I need to use on both. Anyway - it's set up okay, but getting drivers working has been a nightmare on Windows 7! I am struggling to even get the WLAN working to be able to look for other drivers. I tried a Windows 10 install too but even that was also hard to configure - particularly the trackpad - yet I have not had issues with the trackpad on Ubuntu/Mint/OpenSUSE etc that I have run on this machine before.

So it got me thinking - how do the generic drivers in Ubuntu/other distros work? Most of the distros I've used have been pretty beginner friendly and everything just works pretty much straight away. How is this possible? I'm assuming a lot of them are open source generic drivers right? Everything is so hidden and hard to find for Windows, which is a weird thing to notice cos I just put up with it for so long before I started using Linux. (Side question -- does anyone know where to find similar generic drivers for Windows by any chance?)

Apologies again I feel like this is a very silly question but I can't seem to find answers anywhere and it's just really confusing me - though I have been awake working on this dual boot thing until nearly morning so that may have something to do with it haha. Any advice or explanation would be great :) I figure the answer to why it's hard to replicate boils down to it being proprietary software but this isn't really anything I know much about!

Edit: Also sorry the account is so new - longtime lurker and finally decided to join :)

Closing and opening laptop lid messes up graphics?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:10 AM PDT

Hey. I hope this is the right place to post. I recently installed Ubuntu onto an ancient HP dv6 laptop. It works fine, but closing the lid (screen off) and opening it messes up the screen. I didn't "install" any drivers or anything for the Radeon graphics card like would for a clean Windows installation. Any advice?

    Making the compose key permanent

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:08 AM PDT

I was trying to set ScrollLock as my compose key. For that I used setxkbmap -option compose:sclk which worked but as soon as I reboot my computer it is not set anymore. I am using i3 with CDM and was wondering what would be the correct way to make it permanent. I have seen that in the CDM config file there is serverargs="-nolisten tcp -dpi 96". Is it possible to add an argument about the compose key to start the X Server or would it be better to put that command setxkbmap -option compose:sclk in the i3 config file? Or is neither of these the correct way?

Ubuntu vs Debian -- pros and cons?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:41 AM PDT

Decided to try Linux on my laptop, given all the security/datamining issues that seem to be affecting Windows/Google/FB etc. Decided to give Ubuntu a try, only to hear that some criticize it for its past dealings with Amazon.

Some have told me that Debian is a much more secure variant of Linux than Ubuntu. That's appealing, but it seems that their software choices are more limited.

Is Debian notably better than Ubuntu for preventing security breaches/datamining, etc. Will I find Debian's smaller selection of software difficult? (I want to do some word processing, some internet, some torrenting, some audio editing.)

Any feedback weighing the pros and cons of each would be appreciated! Thanks.

    Help with xrandr

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:07 AM PDT

Hello there, I am trying to use my android tablet as a second screen using VNC. Therefore I wanted to add a new mode to the VIRTUAL output and access it via VNC. My problem is that there is no output like VIRTUAL on my installation (Debian 9 stable, KDE). All I have is LVDS, VGA, DP and HDMI with varying numbers. Trying to use one of these ends with a mirrored mainscreen on the tablet and not with an extended desktop.

Has anybody an idea how to create a new VIRTUAL output? My machine runs with an integrated Intel graphics card.

Is Linux Mint Cinnamon the best option for complete newbie with 8yo Lenovo laptop?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:15 PM PDT

I'm considering moving to Linux, for privacy aspect.

My first preference is having the most compatible Linux for my 2010 Lenovo G550 laptop. I do basic stuff like Firefox, calendar, email, Excel, Word. If it supports playing older games, like Diablo 2 ... that would be awesome.

I like GUI more than CLI ... but I'm okay with learning basics of command line, if the best option uses it.

Adding music to iPod Touch 4th gen on Ubuntu 16.04?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 10:32 PM PDT

Hey all. I've scoured the net for a few days now, and haven't really come up with any working solutions - I may be SOL, I realize, but had to ask anyhow.

Is there any way to put music onto (or delete from) an iPod Touch 4th gen on Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit? Rhythmbox refuses to acknowledge it. I tried the workaround of installing iTunes 10 32 bit through PlayonLinux, but Wine encountered an error and I had to cancel out of the application. It mounts when I plug it into the computer, but the only thing it shows is DCIM and it's empty. Banshee refuses to run - every time I've tried, it freezes up when accessing my music library. And the one music program that everyone recommended isn't available now it seems ... Amarok?

If all else fails, I have a crappy laptop that's still running Windows I can use, I'm just hoping for a working solution for Linux ...

    sshd_config on the home desktop

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:33 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

I was setting up ssh on my new remote ubu vps. However, I didn't notice that my connection ended and that I was actually working with the root at my home desktop (win10). While unaware of that, I went into my sshd_config file and changed some things, such as setting PermitRootLogin to "without-password" and PasswordAuthentication to "no."

Now I am afraid to reboot or turn off my home desktop. I don't want to get locked out. And, what if I change my current internet connection? Am I freaking out? Or, do any changes to made to my home desktop as root in bash have any effect on my actual desktop? They do right? What should I re-edit my sshd_config to then?

I think that yum and my keyboard are plotting my demise

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:20 PM PDT

So... For hours, I was receiving this error whenever I attempted anything with yum (literally.... anything)

I had attempted coutntless troubleshooting steps before I started looking into the line errors listed, beginning with

    File "/bin/yum", line 29, in <module>

I don't know that I'm a newb, but I am not all that keen and investigating that many line errors, especially if they are found in my /bin/yum and subsequent subdirectories. Alas, I was at a loss; so I set off on a quest through the bowels of yum. Upon confronting the third error,

File "/usr/share/yum-cli/yummain.py", line 179, in main result, resultmsgs = base.doCommands()

I opened yummain.py and navigated down to line 179, the first line of the following:

    try: result, resultmsgs = base.doCommands() except plugins.PluginYumExit, e: return exPluginExit(e) except Errors.RepoError, e: return exRepoError(e) except Errors.YumBaseError, e: result = 1 resultmsgs = [exception2msg(e)] except KeyboardInterrupt: return exUserCancel() except IOError, e: return exIOError(e)

Confused, I noticed that the 4th 'except' mentions KeyboardInterrupt. Hours earlier, I experienced a hanging boot; grub's last words none other than, 'KeyboardInterrupt.' I thought to myself, "there's no way that they are connected. I have rebooted multiple times since then. I have sucessfuly ran multiple yum commands since then!"

I decided to step out for a cigarette, in order to clear my head of nonsensical yum errors and spare my eyes a few minutes of terminal hell. I sat down at my desk and unlocked my desktop and my blood preasure immediately re-spiked. "Fine, I'll try it... what's it gonna hurt!?" I asked my dear Lunal. I briefly (and I mean briefly) unplugged from the rear of the computer my keyboard's USB (disconnected for no more than a second). I grab my shell and re-type my yum command,

[lunal@localhost yum-cli]$ sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools"

To my surprise, I no longer received the error which had been plaguing my Kernel! Yum churrned and hollered at repos while I waited with anticipation. I was all too releived by yum's output:

[lunal@localhost yum-cli]$ sudo yum groupinstall "Development Tools" Loaded plugins: aliases, auto-update-debuginfo, axelget, changelog, copr, : dellsysid, fastestmirror, filter-data, fs-snapshot, : fusioninventory-agent, kabi, keys, langpacks, list-data, local, : merge-conf, ovl, post-transaction-actions, priorities, : protectbase, ps, refresh-packagekit, remove-with-leaves, rpm- : warm-cache, show-leaves, tmprepo, tsflags, upgrade-helper, : verify, versionlock Loading support for Red Hat kernel ABI There is no installed groups file. After three month: Results and To Do's

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 05:18 AM PDT

TL;DR: I get along and get most things done but there are still a couple of things that need to be addressed.

This might get long, I apologize. And I might not express myself very well or with gramer and syntax necessary to address all my "issues" since I'm not a native speaker. Please bear with me.

I have been using installing a couple Linux distributions before. On spare hardware to never touch again. Mostly the latest Ubuntu. But for the last 12 -13 years I've been using OS X and for some little tasks the Terminal and I feel mostly confident that I can tackle some small use cases. But every time it'd get tough I'd use a graphical interface to get things done. And I may still want to do so. Let's see what the future holds.

My MacBook Pro developed a faulty GPU and had to be replaced. Since money is tight and some OS X decisions by Apple in the last couple of years I was not ok with I decided to get a ThinkPad in combination to finally tackle Linux. Short: I got a T470 and installed Arch Linux.

This was around Christmas. Since then I'd still get some use out of my MBP but would mostly use the new laptop. The general idea was a somewhat seamless transition.

Installing Arch with the help of the wiki was easy enough. Setting everything after that took time and still does. It might sound like a trope but I had the feeling that I went from it just works to it will most definitely work but you have put some work into. It's sometimes a little daunting and some days I just want to sit down and think about the next item on the list. But I'm getting there. There are endless resources on the web. It's just a matter of finding and implementing them. What I should have done was curating a list of things I had to adjust or set up though. Most of the things I did I don't remember anymore.

Here are some little things that worked (almost) perfectly:

    • Setting up awesome wm and get it to launch on start/reboot
    • Setting up my wireless printer
    • Setting up bluetooth pairing with my headset including the mic

Yeah, that list is short. There might be some things missing but here are some of the areas I'm working on:

    • Getting the mic of the headset to work is fine. But I have to restart the Bluetooth service in order to get audio put through the headset. It's easy enough, sudo systemctl restart bluetooth.service, but is is a nuisance.
    • pacaur is not maintained anymore. I'll most likely go for trizen or yay. But does the replacement helper use the same folder structure as pacaur? Can I uninstall pacaur through the replacement without leaving anything behind?
    • Upon restart there seems to be a weird screen issue. Browsing or scrolling looks like the refreshing happens in waves. Not slow but noticeable. It goes away fully after an hour or two. Is that screen tearing? All the workarounds I found seem not to work though.
    • There were the news about meltdown and spectre and I'm not so sure I updated everything correctly. BIOS I didn't even touch.
    • Speaking of updates, if I perform a system update there prompts asking me if I'd like to replace things with xorgproto. There is this thread but I don't now if I should really uninstall libxfont and where it came from in the first place.
    • Fonts were an issue too. I had to install a lot of fonts and I lost track of them. My (chrome) browser seems to use monospaced fonts for everything. But that is just something I can choose within the browser. So this one doesn't count
    • I also installed a fallback kernel? Fallback distro? How would I now if this worked. How would I maintain this?
    • I set up Wifi with NetworkManager I believe and it works perfectly without hiccups. But I am at a loss in adding another network. What is the standard path in doing so? Is there a list for saved networks? I will have to set up eduroam too. But one step after another.
    • As mentioned above I'm using awesome wm and I'd like to use as little tools as needed so I kinda don't want to use polybar or similar. But I find the awesome help pages not that helpful to the point where I had to abort their tutorial since it referred to things that weren't there anymore. As of now I have some apps in the system tray(?) including a battery indicator. That is divided into two since I have... two separate batteries? Look here. I found the necessary lines somewhere on the web and realized that it would just display one of the batteries and I added another line for second one. These are lines btw. But that solution is not ideal. More so I'd like to display the percentage. Additionally I'd very much like if I could set up orange borders all around the desktop if I'm below a threshold, like under 10%, much like Android does. But that is not even tertiary priority. Excluding apps from appearing there is something I've to look into, too
    • Auto mounting USB storage devices seems to kinda work if I invoke udisks. Well there is a system tray icon appearing I then can mount it. Have to look into this. But I somewhat wasn't able to set it up so that I wouldn't need to stark udisks manually. I included udisks -a & in my .xinitrc but that didn't do the trick.
    • Without the above I don't even have a backup solution yet. This scares me.
    • Currently I can raise or lower audio via keyboard shortcuts but I don't have any visual guidance if I do so.
    • I'm missing horizontal swipe. I read that I have to write a custom configuration file. But do I include all of the configurations from the already present files? Or do I add just the line I need? Must be the former.

These are the things that are most apparent or the ones I'm focused on. I'm sure I'd get things done in time but I'd appreciate any tips, tricks, and pointers you can offer.

I'm sure I can perform the transition to Linux. It just takes time. My semester starts tomorrow so I have less time at hand and I feel I have to (re-)learn some basic things to get around.

Have a nice day and thanks in advance!

Looking at moving to Ubuntu, can I copy my Windows security setup?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:21 PM PDT

    Hello All,

So I am kind of struggling with the topic of security, specifically on the linux front and I would like some information from the community. First let me say I use both W10 and linux and until I can validate linux security against Windows 10 I can't fully switch, while I dont need the security I always believe its important to practice security no matter the user.

I will be coming from a pure windows stand point here as my Linux security is basic at best.

So as a general Windows 10 build I will use Education as I get it from my University, this is basically Enterprise for students. First I copy Microsoft's security baseline using lgpo.exe and make some changes like disable cortana, disable store, disable web searches etc. Adding from that I enable secure boot and use bitlocker with TPM only, generally running AES256. Once the general setup is complete (Offline) I setup a none administrator account and use Applocker to enable the default policies and restrict things like administrator accounts cannot use explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe, then disable user groups access to powershell + ISE, then back this up with firewall policies. To add finally I use IPSec for authentication, I can contact without certificate but no one can talk to me without permission. Of course software is well known to me, Chrome for browsing, teamviewer for remote desktops, VPN service for public wifi and unsafe networks (Anywhere thats not home or built by me) and are pulled via ninite, drivers come from OEM directly generally using their tools.

I know drivers come via the kernel in linux and possibly a more secure method than Window can provide, I am unsure how to setup IPsec on Linux (Will likely be ubuntu) but I know how to setup OpenVPN for my actual provider and finally that limited user is used by default and use sudo to elevate, similar to how I do it in Windows, hence the blocking of administrator groups from explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe

Can you lend any advice as I would really like to use Ubuntu on my personal laptop and my windows stuff in a VM as its mostly practice but I would like to emulate a similar system in ubuntu, with IPSec high on the list as I really like the idea. Also any suggestions on where Linux can improve my setup over Windows?

    Many Thanks

    Slow bitrate on Debian

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 10:01 PM PDT

I got a very slow bitrate on Linux: 6.5 Mb/s. In the speed I got a slow one with 2.56 Mbps of download and 1.04 Mbps of upload. In Windows I got a normal speed (about 60 Mbps).

No Soung output devices in Elementary OS loki

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:56 PM PDT

I recently have finally finished distro hopping - I found home, Elementary OS. Pantheon is god tier and makes gnome look like a bitch, my opinion. I tried building ALSA but I doubt I did it right. I am using a Chromebook - Asus C202SA, and not THIS IS NOT IN CHROOT, I deleted Chrome OS and replaced the shitty BIOS with SeaBIOS. It is of course hardware unlocked.

    New to Linux

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:11 PM PDT

New to linux and want to set up my OS for Linux and trying to decide which distro to use. I'm a beginner so leaning towards Linux Mint but also looking at Fedora. So pretty much advice on either or the two (or others) and how easy it would be to "swap" in the future. Also advice on dual booting with windows versus complete whip. Thanks!

Finding it impossible to install any version of Linux on Dell XPS 8930

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:16 PM PDT

Update: thank you all for the advice! Sorry for my lack of response... I had no computer! Here is how I ended up fixing the problem (I think it was more luck than anything).

First, I installed Xubuntu on a flash drive with Etcher instead of Rufus. Second, I enabled safeboot. Third, I disabled safe boot while installing Xubuntu. Later, I disabled safeboot in the BIOS/UEFI. Somehow that worked!

I have been using Linux for over 15 years, so I feel rather silly for this, but I am at my wit's end trying to install Linux on this computer. When I first bought it I was able to install something on here, but I had to do Windows for a short while and it updated something that made it seemingly impossible to do Linux.

    Some details:

I prep my flash drive using Rufus 2.18. I have tried both GPT for UEFI and for Bios+UEFI. File system FAT.

I am able to boot the flash drive and technically install Linux. However, on reboot my computer doesn't even recognize that the flash drive is plugged in. I have safe boot turned off. This is the same case regardless what flavor of Linux I try. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Older laptop with switchable graphics, best distro?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:45 PM PDT

I have a samsung 700z that my son uses for minecraft etc I want to put linux on as windows is so slow and bloated on it. The problem is that it has a Intel HD3000/Radeon HD6750M in it and the latest version of ubuntu I tried (17.10) doesn't support the ati driver for that as it was closed source so it only uses the crappy intel one.
I also tried a live usb version of debian but couldn't get that to work with it either unfortunately.
The bios of course has no option to force the radeon card all the time.
Does anyone have any ideas on distos that will work or if there is any way to get ubuntu to work with it?

Need help with TB16 drivers for Linux Mint/Cinnamon

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:19 PM PDT

I've got a Precision 5520, and running the TB16 dock.

I can charge the workstation, use the GbE port, use USB ports for a mouse (occasional stutter), but cannot get audio out of the 1/8" audio jack on the front of the dock, plugged into a pair of studio monitors.

I've upgraded the BIOS of the 5520 to the most recent version, and am running kernel 4.13.03.x.x

Anybody running this setup, and manage to get it working? Recent Linux convert and noob, would appreciate any help! Cheers
