    What's available for a top of the line laptop minus a graphics card

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 08:21 AM PDT

    I just picked up an aero 15 v8 and I'm loving it. My mom wants to get a new laptop as well, she uses it for business stuff all the time but she has zero need for a powerful graphics card. What is the go to laptop for this application? The XPS 15 is nice but she would rather have more ports available than the slim form factor.

    Acer E5-511: No. of RAM slots - spec sheet vs. reality

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 10:18 AM PDT

    I've been looking for a cheap Windows laptop and someone just passed on an Acer E5-511 (SNID: 42121060634) to me. I'm planning on doing two basic/cheap upgrades, namely installing an SSD and maxing out the RAM... which is where I hit something of a puzzle.

    Having consulted the official spec sheet and a few other sources on RAM upgrades, the facts are clear: this laptop contains 1 RAM slot which can hold up to 8GB of PC3L-12800 memory. So I open the laptop to have a look at the internals, extract and flip (RAM is on the rear) the motherboard and there's 2 RAM slots there (containing 1x4GB of RAM in the first).

    I don't really wanna order another 4GB stick if it turns out the 2nd slot is purely decorative. Anyone know what's going on here? Is the spec sheet wrong?

    Asus GL503VD freezing screen, lagging

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:12 AM PDT

    Hi, i've recentyl bought Asus GL503VD. It was very slow, but i upgraded it with ssd and now it's nice and smooth.

    At least i thought so, becaouse it started to lag a little bit, mostly during playing overwatch, but also at browsing web or watching videos.

    This lags aren't that often, but its very annoying when screen freez for second or two.

    I've updated BIOS, chipset, graphic driver etc., but it didn't help.

    Do you have any ideas what can be the problem?

    Thanks ;)

    Specs:

    i7 7700HQ

    nvidia gtx 1050

    8GB RAM

    HP Spectre 13t vs. XPS 13 vs. Surface Laptop ($1300, US)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 10:15 AM PDT

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prioritizing high build quality, all-day battery life, and aiming for an i5, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Looking for an under-3-pound ultrabook.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light Multitasking and Heavy Browsing (a few dozen tabs open is not abnormal for my work)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is important as I spend a ton of time typing for work and hobbies.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've narrowed my choices to the below laptops and included my thoughts so far on each, but I am open to other suggestions in there is a better laptop for me out there. I also have no idea about these laptops when it comes to battery life, so any insight there would be greatly appreciated!

    XPS 13

    ++ Smallest form factor

    ++ Thunderbolt & fast charging

    -- No USB type A ports

    -- highest pricing

    -- No touch on lower tiers

    HP Spectre 13t

    ++ Keyboard felt great

    ++ Thunderbolt & fast charging

    ++ Lightest in the group

    -- No USB type A ports

    -- bottom half is flat (no wedge), so typing angle is odd

    -- ports are in the rear

    Surface Laptop

    ++ Great Keyboard

    ++ Beautiful design/build quality

    ++ 3:2 aspect ratio is great for work

    -- 7th generation processor

    -- Only 1 USB type a port (No USB type c or thunderbolt)

    -- lowest pricing (currently discounted $200)

    Hyundai Kanabo Laptop Opinion

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 08:03 AM PDT

    I've been looking around online in Dubai where I currently am for a good gaming laptop and found a great deal online for the Hyundai Kanabo Gaming laptop. Now on the face of it, the specs look great for my limited budget, i7-7700HQ, 1TB+128GB SSD, 16GB RAM and a 6GB GTX 1060. My main source of apprehension is the fact that I can find 0 reviews for the thing, hardly anything other than 2-3 statements on reddit. Has anyone bought one of these and what do you think of it so far. Is it any good?

    Gigabyte Aero 15x battery/charger question

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 06:41 AM PDT

    So I bought my first real gaming laptop, the new Gigabyte Aero 15x with the 8750H and 1070 Max-Q. So far I am loving this little machine. But something is bothering me.

    While I am doing my stress testing, I have noticed that if I do a stress test with the laptop plugged in and the battery at 100%, everything is fine. But if I run a test with it plugged in and the battery is still charging, the laptop 'loses' the charger and acts like it is not plugged in anymore. The only way to get it back on the charger is unplug the charger from the wall and then plug it back in.

    Is this normal?

    Need help on upgrading Asus laptop RAM. It has onboard DDR3L but the empty RAM slot doesn't have any label if it's compatible with DDR3L or not.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:35 AM PDT

    So, I have this laptop from Asus, ASUS X302UV series. According to the official website, the soldered RAM is DDR3L. But, it didn't show if the slot is supporting 1.35 volt or not.
    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/X302UV/specifications/
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 6200U Processor
    Memory: DDR3L 1600(O.C.) MHz SDRAM + 1 free RAM slot
    Graphic: NVIDIA® GeForce® 920MX with 2GB DDR3

    I did once try to use this RAM to achieve 8GB, but the laptop just switch to this RAM and the onboard RAM becomes non-active.
    CORSAIR Memory Notebook 4GB DDR3 PC-12800 1.5Volt [CMSO4GX3M1A1600C11]
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMSO4GX3M1A1600C11-Select-Mainstream-Notebook/dp/B009VPX6D8

    My question is, should I just buy the normal DDR3 or buy the DDR3L RAM for the upgrade?

    Laptop for student 13"+, US, $600

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:18 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

    I'd like to begin by thanking you and saying that this laptop would be gifts for family members abroad in Egypt.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best bang for your buck generally, I'm pretty flexible; but 2 in 1 would be great if there is one with at least 350GB.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" and above

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Since it's not for me I am not sure, but maybe light gaming; but most likely just college work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Unknown.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard, reliable and will actually last for a long while. CD drive would be nice, but not a must.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just want something that I can feel safe giving to someone as a gift that will be reliable and not slow down or break down on them within the first 2 years at least. Ideally this should last all throughout college (4 years).

    Thank you!
