Aero 15x vs XPS 15 9570 as a daily driver.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 05:42 AM PDT

    Hi

I originally wanted a 13-14 in laptop for portability and to dock to two 1080p monitors for games, but I found that doesn't really exist. I'm considering these two laptops and wanted an opinion on using them as a daily driver.

The xps has a much less powerful graphics card but is slimmer and shorter and the reverse for the aero. Which do you think would hold up better in a bag everyday? Do you think the aeros increase in size will be noticeable? Also do you think the graphical power of the aero will be much superior to the xps when docked to two monitors? Games are pretty much just overwatch and side scrollers. The main purpose of the laptop is data analytics.

Why are 1080p displays yellowish compared to 4k models? (picture from bestbuy visit, left is 4k, right is 1080p)

Lenovo Yoga 730 arrived | Initial thoughts

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 07:56 AM PDT

Today I received my new Lenovo Yoga 730-13IKBR and wanted to share some first thoughts after unboxing today.

I was a bit afraid of the fan noise problems of older generations (Yoga 910, Yoga 720 ...), but wanted to try it because with 859 € it is very nice priced here in Germany.

    Specs:

    • Intel® Core™ i5-8250U
    • 8 GB RAM (DDR4-2400, Dual-Channel)
    • 256 GB NVMe / PCIe Gen 3x4 SSD (Drive Model: HFS256GD9TNG-62A0A, Hynix)
    • 13.3" Full-HD IPS glare (BOE CQ NV133FHM-N61, same display as in the Yoga 720; 90% sRGB, 60% AdobeRGB, 300nits)
    • 2x Thunderbolt 3 (Type C), 1x USB-A 3.0, Active Pen, Fingerprint reader

    German shop link: https://www.campuspoint.de/lenovocampus-yoga-730-13-81ct0023ge.html

    First thoughts:

    • iron grey body looks very nice, build quality perfect at my unit (had some Lenovos before which had some quality issues like bad hinges or loose trackpad)
    • system is blazing fast, takes about 7sec until the windows login screen
    • Fan noise is absolutely quiet (!) when browsing in Chrome and doing basic stuff like Office, Spotify what was really unexpected. Seems that Lenovo heard about all the customer complaints and finally made some changes to the thermal management. In the box there was also a paper "Intelligent Cooling" included which shows how to switch between Performance Mode and Quiet / Cool mode in Lenovo Companion / Lenovo Vantage in Windows 10.
    • PCIe SSD is a nice one, not as fast as the really fast Samsung series but noticable faster than a SATA drive and also a little bit faster as most of the Toshiba NVMe devices. CrystaiDiskMark 3: http://abload.de/image.php?img=cdmboo57.png
    • battery life with the 48Wh battery seems to be okay for me, BatteryBar Pro says about 7-8h from 100% -> 0%.

All in all i am very pleased after the first hours, finally fan noise seems to be no issue anymore what is really important to me.

If there a some questions, I will try to answer them asap! :)

    ASUS GL703GM

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:32 PM PDT

Your thoughts on gl703 with coffee lake? Is it worth it? For 1.6k$ you get i7 8750h, desktop 1060, 16 gb of ram and 256 ssd with 1tb hdd. It also has 120 hz screen and according to reviews the screen in previous generation was pretty good for a gaming laptop.

cannot find differences between these acer swift 5 models.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:12 PM PDT

I've been looking all day but have not found any differences between these models:

    1. Swift 5 SF514-52T-50AQ, link: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.GTMAA.001

    2. Swift 5 SF514-52T-51MV, link: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.GTMAA.005

They are marked at $1000 and $850 respectively, and also have different "part number". But the specs are the same as far as I can see. Please help.

Also if anyone has any suggestions similar to these, I'm all ears.

New Laptop. Need suggestions on settings and such.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 06:36 AM PDT

Today I picked up this laptop.

I'll be using it mostly for school work, internet browsing, and playing Fortnite. I've never had a brand new PC so I was wondering what settings, chrome plug ins, etc. the experts could suggest.

    Recs for laptop for school/programming

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:54 PM PDT

Hi everyone: Would really appreciate your recs on a new laptop for grad school. I haven't purchased a laptop since 2009 (just been using my work Lenovo ThinkPad which has been solid but is also old af (t440s)). I'd prefer to buy from costco because of the easy returns and it looks like there may be some deals (lenovo ideapad 320 for $550? )

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max $900 although prefer less expensive, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Top priorities: best specs for money and good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightweight would be ideal since I'll be lugging it around everyday

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope, will mostly be using Word and R/Python/STATA/SAS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and screen since i'll be on it basically all day everyday. Reliable too please--it's gotta last me through 6 years of grad school

    Thanks!

    Aero 15X review

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:59 AM PDT

I recently bought a gigabyte aero 15X , very good laptop in general IPS panel, I would recommend to buy. But gigabyte is still having serious quality control issues, The first day I got my laptop the "A" key on the keyboard is jammed. So therefore a 5 star rating has greatly diminished to a 3 star rating

    Re-pasting and undervolting!?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 08:05 AM PDT

Hi, so I'm trying to replace my ageing Mac with a new Windows based laptop because I'm not very happy with the way Apple is treating its pro users at the moment.

I'm very confused because it seems that for every single windows laptop people are recommending that you repaste and undervolt the CPU.

I've been looking at the Razer Blade, Alienware 15, Aero 15x, MSI GS65, Dell XPS 15 and 15 2in1, HP x360 Spectre.

Redditors and other forum users speak as if it's absolutely normal to have to fully disassemble a brand new computer straight out of the box, void it's warranty and reapply thermal paste.

Surely this isn't the case? I've used MacBooks for a while now and whilst I've had them overheat I've never really experienced notable throttling or performance degradation to the point that I'd need to pull it apart and repaste.

Suggestions for the most secure linux laptop with top performance?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:52 AM PDT

I am looking to buy a new laptop and am thinking of switching to Linux OS instead of windows. What suggestions are there for the most secure laptop that comes with a Linux distro. Looking for something that also has top of the line performance in terms of CPU/GPU? Alternatively what is the best option(security + performance) overall including laptops that run windows or other OS given that I can always install a second OS or use a virtual machine

Edit: By security I mean how secure are the built in hardware devices that communicate(Bluetooth wireless etc) and the level of spying by OS. NOT virus/malware security

    What should I buy?

Hello. I'm searching for a laptop to buy with a budget of around $350. I heard that the T series of Lenovo thinkbook laptops are a prime choice. Is refurbished stuffed from Amazon and/or Newegg any good?

New Aero 15x internet issue help

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 06:43 AM PDT

Hi everyone, just recently got a new aero 15x and was really excited about it. However, after using it for one day, the internet speed on it drastically dropped. I initially thought it was my router but i plugged it to my old laptop and this was the result on speedtest (roughly both the same for download/upload):

    aero 15x:   wireless:0.98mb/sec   wired:5.5mb/sec

old laptop:   wireless: 250mb/sec   wired: 980mb/sec

anyone know if this is a wireless card defect issue or what could be the problems? Do i have to send it back for return? My ping is pretty consistent around 20 though but download/upload speeds are screwed.

One last thing, this didn't appear to be an issue on the first day and youtube videos were running fine, but after not touching it and waking up overnight, internet speed crashed and now I can only watch 144p videos on lag...

Are there any Asus ROG GU501GM reviews out yet?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:52 AM PDT

On paper, it looks like a slick-ass laptop comparable to the Razer Blade series for a little less money with a Coffee Lake CPU, but I don't really trust the user reviews on Best Buy's website. I was wondering if there were any professional reviews out yet for this.

Is the HP Envy x360 Model: 15m-bp111dx any good?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:08 AM PDT

I bought this laptop during Best Buy's four day laptop sale for $599.99. With an 8th gen i5 and 12gb of RAM it was so hard to pass up so I picked it up and decided I would look up any fatal flaws online. I honestly just don't trust HP at all, but the build on this thing is fantastic. With all that said there have been many negative posts about the AMD Ryzen version of this laptop. So I was curious if anyone has had any experience with the Intel version? For the price and performance so far I think it is win, just unsure about HP as a whole.

Help me find my dad a laptop

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:01 AM PDT

He's been using XP on a Dell that has to be over a decade old by now.

He uses Quickbooks for work, Outlook for email, and, other than that, just does general browser stuff (including videos).

98% of the time he uses his laptop on a desk with a mouse plugged in. The reason he wants a laptop is because he travels between two houses 1-2 times a week. I want to buy him something with great build quality, a bigger screen, and a good price/performance ratio.

My friend suggested the Acer Aspire E15. While it does seem like a good fit, $600 seems like a lot of $ for how relatively small my pop's hardware requirements are. What do you think /laptops/ ? Thanks.

To paste or not to paste

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:16 PM PDT

My Dell 7537 is a bit old and I was thinking if reapplying thermal paste could help. Idle to minimal workload is around 50-65 C while heavy load/gaming would bring it to 75-85 C.

Will reapplication help or should I not do it?

    Thanks for the help.
