Posted: 28 Apr 2018 07:19 AM PDT Hi, is there a way to automaticly start programs in specific workspaces when I boot up? But I want to be able to open those programs in other workspaces without redirecting or openning them in the workspace assigned. I use webkit greeter, if that makes anydifference. I use i3-gaps and would like to make it start on boot too, how can I make that? For example when I start the pc I want to have the web browser and a terminal opened in the first workspace, emacs and 2 terminals in the second... How can I make this work with rofi and i3blocks aside from the other programs? [link] [comments] |

Upgraded my GPU on linuxmint but can't get it working properly Posted: 28 Apr 2018 05:46 AM PDT I'm on mint 18.3 with the cinnamon desktop (I tried Ubuntu but mint and cinnamon was more familiar for me coming from windows) Went from a gtx 1050ti to an RX 580 8GB but I'm experiencing crashes every time I try to open a game. For the nvidia card, the built-in driver manager was able to install proprietary drivers for me and everything worked fine. For the amd card, mint boots fine and the display is working fine too, but when I open any game after a few seconds the screen goes blank, the GPU fans come on full blast, and the PC reboots. I've tried following the instructions in this thread to install the driver from amd but when I reboot the PC after installation, I'm left with a blank screen where it should show the desktop. The card itself works fine in windows with the latest drivers so I'm certain it's not a hardware problem. Spitting out hundreds of frames in doom with Vulcan, but I really don't like windows and don't want to switch back. This is the first time I've encountered a problem with hardware on Linux and I really want to sort it out. Also this is on a fresh install. When it didn't work first time around I decided to start from scratch. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:17 PM PDT Hi! I've had a recurrent problem since (I believe, but don't quote me on that) debian-testing became debian-stable (Stretch). My internet connection drops randomly, and the only way to make it work again is by restarting NetworkManager. My system is Debian 9 (Stretch), using a Intel Wireless AC 7260 (WiFi + BT) NIC and a RTL8111/8168/8411 NIC (at least that's what lspci tells me). I'm using NetworkManager to manage my connections. The problem: Randomly, some part of the network (my money is on DNS) stops working, and I get stuck on "resolving host" in chrome, unable to resolv IPs to try to ping stuff. Since I dual boot with Windows and have no problems and other computers in the house running Windows don't have problems it must be something wrong with a config somewhere on linux. Atempted solutions: I've tried to delete resolv.conf and let NetworkManager rebuild it (rm /etc/resolv.conf), but still the same. The logs don't display anything out of the ordinary, with exception of a random cinnamon-settin segfault and another error which I can't find because I solved it and stopped appearing in the logs. I've also added a modprobe entry for iwlwifi with the content "options iwlwifi swcrypto=1" to solve the aforementioned error. I've also tried a lot of solutions from the internet, but they where either using packages I didn't use or didn't work at all. Help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Apr 2018 07:27 AM PDT I'm running GalliumOS (fork of Xubuntu 16.04 LTS) with i3, and I'm working on setting up ibus-anthy for Japanese input, but I'm struggling to get it working. I have installed it, set it as the input method, have it launching on startup, and I have the little toolbar for it in the corner and everything, and I can go into its settings and everything and it seems to all work. However, I can mash as many keys as I want and it's just putting in Latin characters. No Kana are appearing at all, and the little pop-ups by the cursor for completion never appear at all - as if the IME isn't even running at all. I'm not sure if I have the wrong settings on it or if I've done something wrong in installation or if it is just broken. Searching the web, I've found suggestions to log out and back in, restart the daemon, restart the program I'm trying to input text into, and trying all these fails to fix the problem, leaving me in exactly the same place. What else can I do to try and fix this? Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to fix the MBR if its been overwritten by the GRUB bootloader? Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:05 AM PDT Long story short, I'm learning kali linux for a job and I was going to dual boot it. Went through the whole process and it went fine except Windows didn't show up as a choice. I've decided to just run it in a VM instead as that seems less intrusive. I've removed the partition and everything but now I can only boot into windows by changing my second hard drive to be first in the boot order and my nvme SSD just brings up the failed to boot grub interface. Is there a way for me to revert it back to booting into windows? It's not really THAT big of a deal moreso it bothers me that my SSD is not the first in the boot order. It still boots insanely fast. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Having trouble installing Ubuntu 18.04 on a separate SSD. Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:14 AM PDT Hey everybody, I'm using a desktop with my primary SSD as Win10 and I got a new SSD which I want to install Ubuntu on to so I can boot between the two drives. Before I dive into the problem here's my hardware information:
I've downloaded Ubuntu 18.04 from their website and I used Rufus to turn a 32GB usb stick into a bootable drive for Ubuntu, I am able to use my BIOS to boot into the USB stick but my problem arises with the disk partitioning. Here is an album for the steps I've taken within the installation steps they've given me. Essentially, after running the install the 120GB ssd does not show up as a bootable option in my BIOS. I figured that it's something I've done wrong in partitioning the space in Ubuntu so any help is appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
UEFI install always boots to GRUB Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:45 AM PDT I'm at a total loss right now, I've been trying to reinstall Ubuntu server on a new 5TB RAID 5 array. My previous install was on a 2TB RAID 0 array with BIOS boot. So creating a partition requires a switch to UEFI boot, right? After creating a GPT FAT32 bootable usb install of Ubuntu server 16.04 and installing it on the RAID 5 array, it always boots to the GRUB terminal. 'ls' returns '(hd0)' and that's it. It's almost like it failed to install correctly, but there's no errors during the install process. I've must have been through 20 guides/tutorials and none of them solve the issue. I've tried reinstalling GRUB2 on a live version of linux, I've tried creating partitions manually. And nothing. I'm running it on a Dell R710 (PERC/i6), it's in UEFI mode, there's no secure boot setting. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:38 AM PDT My i3 config is set to execute a certain shell script when I restart i3. The thing is that the shell script needs root access but i3 starts the scripts with normal user privileges. My question would be, whether there is a command I can use inside my shell script to prompt the user via a gui to enter the root password when needed. This is because i3 launches the sh file in the background and it doesn't spawn a terminal. [link] [comments] |
What should I look at when trying a new distro? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:45 PM PDT I've been trying a few different distros to decide which to keep, and the things I usually look at are DE, Steam and other few software and general performance, but I'm at a point where I hardly see a diference (between Solus and Manjaro Budgie) I have a laptop and use it for some gaming, general browsing and as a digital artist (planning to buy a graphic tablet soon). Is there something special I could do to see the differnece between both? Should I just try every software I use in both even if that would require so much work? [link] [comments] |
Am I the only one that has bad luck with Gnome? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:56 PM PDT I've been using Linux for server environments for a while now so the thought of the terminal doesn't scare me. I've been looking into what it has to offer from a desktop perspective but it seems nothing goes right. I installed Ubuntu 17.10 on a VM and that worked completely fine until one day, it wouldn't boot anymore. I tried looking for a solution online and the only thing I was able to find was formatting the drive and starting over. :(
I heard 18.04 LTS was released recently so I downloaded that and installed it on a VM. Again, everything worked fine until I rebooted the machine, then it got stuck on booting the Gnome Display Manager.
I've always heard that Linux is a super stable desktop environment, but it seems I don't have any luck thus far. I have to be doing something wrong, right? [link] [comments] |

Resources Needed for RHEL / RHCSA Posted: 28 Apr 2018 06:35 AM PDT Hi all, I'm finishing up my first RHCSA course and while I really like the material and I'm getting ready for the final skills exam, I despise the book. We're using the Sander Van Vugt book Red Hat RHCE/RHCSA 7 Cert Guide, and it's borderline awful. Waaaaay too many typos and missing links in the instruction. Not all bad, but enough glaring omissions for me to be looking elsewhere for reference. So before I take my final, I want to brush up on partitioning, logical volumes, user and group management, etc... Any recommendations for a good, free text or reasonably in-depth website? Dual-Booting Windows10 + SolusOS Posted: 28 Apr 2018 05:53 AM PDT Hey guys, first post here. I used to run linux back in the day (diff. distros). Now I'm trying to get back into it & SolusOS really caught my eye. I want to use Solus as my main OS & have Windows 10 with Adobe products & any other windows-only programs I'll need. Here's the rundown of what I did:

Disabling guest session and hiding users at the logon window in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:47 PM PDT So in 16.04, if you did Then added... Upon reboot you'd have to enter your username and password with no other options to login. It seems the file to edit has changed in 18.04, because /etc/lightdm no longer exists. Where should I be looking now? [link] [comments] |
Franz messenger won't run after upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:49 AM PDT I've recently upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04. Now Franz won't run. I tried running it from the shortcut from the dock and directly from the executable file. Both failed. What could be causing this? [link] [comments] |
Can iptables block internal port? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:14 PM PDT I installed Minidlna. In iptables i made rules that only my samsung tv can see Minidlna, and to minidlna can only see samsung tv. Is this correct way to do that? Samsung TV is using 192.168.1.31 ip adress
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8200 --source 192.168.1.31 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 8200 -j DROP
iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 8200 --source 192.168.1.31 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 8200 -j DROP
My only problem is now that i constantly have requests from 192.168.1.12:34719 which is the same ip adress where minidlna is..i think that this is plex(i disabled dlna, i think that upnp can't be disabled) i get 10s requests per second
How to block that port to not see minidlna.. again, plex and minidlna are on the same device with ip 192.168.1.12 Thanks [link] [comments] |
kernel update freezes boot on opensuse Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:26 PM PDT Hi all, I just installed opensuse 42.3 with the kernel 4.4 by default and when I update the kernel to the 4.16 version the boot freezes at loading initial ramdisk, I tried nomodeset and nothing, I have an Nvidia gtx1060, and a i7 8750. This is the edited lines in /etc/defaukt/grub and it won't boot unless I use the kernel 4.4 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='resume=/dev/disk/by-uuid/14a84076-c560-4b17-86e6-25fae345ec72 splash=silent quiet i915.alpha_support=1 acpi_os= acpi_osi="!Windows 2009" acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=linux dis_ucode_ldr showopts ' GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" Cheers [link] [comments] |
