Security implications of hosting NAS and Personal Cloud (nextcloud) on the same machine Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:02 PM PDT I'm trying to understand the security risks of hosting my NAS and internet facing services such as Nextcloud and Emby on the same machine. Is this generally discouraged? Would running separate VMs be the best practice? Would isolating the internet facing services in docker containers be enough? I'm interested to hear your opinions [link] [comments] |
Bridge mode between Xfinity XB6 wireless gateway (wifi enabled) and Netgear r6300v2 (in bridge mode) Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:29 PM PDT The setup works for a bit, I get about 250 mb/s, and then the connection drops and I get a DNS error. Not sure what I can do to fix this connectivity issue. I'm trying to use the Netgear router as a receiver to get Ethernet capability in my basement [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:00 AM PDT This evening i was trying to watch YouTube on my IPhone in safari and i kept getting a, safari cannot get a secure connection error. I then went on to my laptop, google chrome says that youtube.com sent an invalid response, weird... Mind you, i recently have been using the free vpn app to watch some things, could this be an issue? It only works when the vpn is turned on [link] [comments] |
Netlimitter broke my internet rules Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:30 AM PDT I was trying out the netlimitter and when I wanted to uninstall, it broke several of my programs such as discord and bittorrent. I can't make a call on discord unless I uncheck the "quality of service high packet priority" option. And my torrents usually stuck at "[DHT] waiting for announce" . This is my home network and it was fine until netlimitter broke it. So is there a way I can restore my internet priority settings? Btw I didn't use netlimiter for discord or torrenting. I used it for a game. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:55 PM PDT Hey everyone, I've recently become fed up with how we are using Internet at my house. We have a Comcast modem in the middle of our house upstairs which connects to a net gear router which we then connect to wirelessly on all of our devices. 6 of us, some of us with multiple devices trying to stream live tv or play games at the same time. There has got to be a better way to set this up, I know about wifi channels and that it can get stupid sluggish if there is a lot of traffic on the wifi channels. Outside of that I don't know much. I tried to follow the beginners guide but I could not comprehend on what to do from here. Any advice on what I can do to improve it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:30 AM PDT Hello all, my dad got mad about the latest bill from our ISP and decided to switch to a cheaper ISP. Our current ISP, Bell (We're in Canada), we were getting 50 down and 10 up, while bundled with TV and home phone and using the provided router (speeds were alright), let's just say that the price was too much. My dad and I decided to go with Start.ca, considering the good reviews that they have. We decided to go for 250 down and 20 up since that's the number one thing that we use nowadays. We were informed that we need to buy our own router for our internet. Now, I could just go off and get the mid-expensive range router, but I'm afraid we might not be able to get the speeds that we want, or that we paid too much when in fact there is a router that has double the speeds for less. What are your suggestions for a decent and good router? Hoping to get a router thats powerful enough for streaming Netflix in 4K, gaming, and watching sports without any interruptions (If we could do 5ghz in all rooms, that would be great, but not really a need). Our house is around 1600 sq ft, so we want to try and avoid repeaters/range extenders. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Cell booster for rental property -- need suggestions Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:48 PM PDT I just started looking into cell boosters for 4G LTE, and it seems like most of them require each phone to be registered/linked. I'm trying to boost signal (for AT&T mostly) for a vacation home that will have new users each week. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Did I make any obvious mistakes designing my network? (design doc inside) Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:16 AM PDT I also need to fill in a couple gaps in my design. So, in a previous life I was a wannabe network guy, and while I'm very familiar with Layer 3 networking, I am relatively inexperienced with VLANs. I was hoping to run my design ideas by people who may be more familiar than me. The goal is some network isolation as I expand into home automation and home entertainment areas in my apartment. I made a diagram of what I'm planning to do. The questions I have are (probably looking for "best practice" kind of answers, since I assume I can just route everything everywhere and have it "work"):
I feel like I'm getting confused about the untagged vs tagged aspect of vlans (question 1) Also, the management VLAN thing is also a bit of a concern - I've never had a management VLAN before. The devices (except PFSense) are actually managed from a Unifi controller hosted off site. So maybe it's a bit pointless to isolate them and then open them up to the internet anyway. I'm probably over thinking certain things, and under thinking others. I welcome any feedback just so I feel more confident about this. (if it doesn't work well, I don't want my girlfriend to suffer :) ) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:27 PM PDT Have an asus rtac68u and devices lately will remain wifi connected and say internet connected yet cannot access internet. Is this likely a modem problem? Anyway to create a backup to restore from after asus router reset? [link] [comments] |
all sorts of shit hits my router no matter what Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:45 PM PDT call me naive, but a friend of mine had his system hacked so I've been a bit on the paranoid side. I've been looking at all the traffic that's been hitting my router lately and it got me a bit apprehensive. Netcore Router Backdoor, Remote Command via Shell Script, Asus LAN Backdoor (that one hit close to home). So I reset the router MAC to get a new IP and everything was great for maybe 6 hours then boom, all the shit starts again. My network has much better defense (I actually update, what a concept) and intellectually I know it's fine but it still pisses me off that you have to even worry about that shit. [link] [comments] |
Can anyone guess what home network gear (modem/router/WAP) I may need based on the picture provided? Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:42 PM PDT I am moving soon and was not able to properly inspect the house for the home networking requirements. I was able to have sent a picture of the "comms closet" for lack of a better term. I will be using Suddenlink cable in a newer home. I have only lived in much older homes in other parts of the country which either had different network wiring or simply required wireless. I would like to have wired and wireless capability and supply all my own gear and not rely on the cable company rentals. Any guesses on hardware I would need to order to have it there when I arrive? I understand the inherent risks of taking advice off the internet. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 08:36 AM PDT Hey everyone recently i've been searching to get a good router for home. im gonna use it mainly for gaming since my game depends on latency and stability a lot i was between asus ac-68u and tp link archer c9. also i dont want to pay more than 120$ or maybe even less just want something with good features. all the suggestions are appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:58 PM PDT I've got my router and modem setup on the second floor of my house towards the front. I'd like to have wireless connectivity out in my backyard. I don't need gaming speeds back there, just the ability to browse. On the other hand, nothing that I do to get wifi out back can too negatively impact the speeds inside the house, otherwise this is for naught. Right now, running ethernet is not an option. I believe that the next best solution is a powerline adapter from the room that my modem and router are in to the wall closest to the backyard. And then on that second piece of the powerline adapter, a wireless access point to provide [the same network/a new network] to that space. Is my understanding correct? I'd appreciate any information that you could provide. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:47 AM PDT Anyone know if these will ever be available to consumers? Actiontec seem to be the only company selling them and they're only available to ISPs. I've contacted them but they refuse to sell directly to consumers. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet over Coax - how to connect splitter Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:27 AM PDT I have a new house that unfortunately wasn't wired with ethernet cable and I'm trying to add a second access point. I have coax wires to various points including the room where I want to add the AP so I'm leaning toward using MOCA converters to connect the thing. When I wire up this splitter do the labels "input" and "output" mean anything important? Or does it not matter how it's connected? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Question about switching to Edge Router X Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:20 PM PDT My current set up is I have a bridged Shaw Hitron modem (Canada) in my upstairs bonus room which is plugged into coax into the wall. Next to the coax is an Ethernet wall port which is the only one in the house and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it. None of the other rooms have Ethernet hardwire ports but some rooms do have coax. I also have an RT68U plugged into the modem which broke 2 days ago. I'm considering switching to ERX with Unifi AP AC Lite. I would like an access point in the bonus room, the main floor living room and another one in the upstairs bedroom (coax outlets are available). We have 8 devices using wifi in our house and at most 2 or 3 are used at once (most often gaming computer and a netflix stream) I purchased and set up an Orbi yesterday with the router in the bonus room and the satellite on the main floor. There are still deadspots in the house which I'm pretty sure is a pebcac issue but I can't seem to figure out why. I will be returning it if I can get my Ubiquiti setup working. My questions are:

Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:04 PM PDT Let's say I have a private subnet range (will call it SRC) at one location and the same private subnet range (will call it DST) at another. I set up a vpn between the two expecting to be able to make a connection to DST from SRC on any given port. Just to simplify: SRC: 192.168.0.0/24 VPN: doesn't matter I don't think. DST: 192.168.0.0/24 ALT: 10.20.0.0/24 So on the SRC side routing to anything 192.168.0.0/24 on DST side isn't going to work (right?) and on the DST side it's not gonna know what to do with what's coming in (right?) So I set up a non-conflicting IP range on the DST side (labeled ALT above) Created a load balancer in ALT that directs the ports to the the Servers in DST. So what we know at this point is that ALT and DST are in each others routing tables. So they can talk to each other. Now for the question(s). If someone from SRC initiates a TCP network connection to ALT, where is it's return or ephemeral connection go back to? Will it try to initiate it's return path based on the Route table? Or will it stick with it's connection path? OR will it not matter and use the IP provided by the VPN as it's source? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:23 PM PDT So my roommates decided to downgrade our internet from an already pretty bad 200mbps connection to a 15mbps connection. This basically means that one person at a time can use the connection, and I find this unacceptable. A friend of mine added me to his xfinity account, and there are many xfinitywifi access points in my city. However, I can't reach any of them from my room. I'm planning on purchasing an outdoor antenna and a USB receiver, point that thing at somebody's house and call it a day. However this got me thinking, is there a way to do even better? I don't really want to outright steal anyone's internet, but there are plenty of businesses/hotels/etc in my city that probably have a gigabit connection and may have public wifi. Is there a way of finding out the connection speed in some various place without walking in the building and doing a speed test? Also does anyone know if the stock issued xfinity routers support a 5g/ac connection? (On the xfinitywifi connection). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:59 AM PDT I have a workstation which was upgraded with an Intel X540-T1 10GB NIC. Some docs on the official intel support site state this card supports WOL (and i mean seriously, which NICs made in the last few years dont?) but then there is a single document regarding the Intel X540-T1 thats states it does not support WOL. Does anyone have one of these and whats your experience? My machine wakes fine using its on-board NIC but not using the Intel X540-T1 so i am confident that the other pre-reqs are satisfied. Free software to document home network? Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:33 AM PDT Any particular free software recommended for basic network diagramming? I don't need anything too detailed, really looking for something easy to use so I can sketch up my existing home network to post and get some opinions on before I finish the last few branches that will be the most difficult to run. I'm not extremely experienced with networking, so I'm sure there are some potential optimizations that could be made. Want to make sure if I'm going through the effort, it will be correct. Wiring up a new home with USB C rather than RJ45? - Future proofing Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:56 PM PDT Hi all, we're in the process of buying a new place and I'm doing some preplanning. The house isn't networked at the moment and I'm toying with the idea of getting cable channels put in so as to install a wired network connection in some of the rooms. My question is, are there any disadvantages to using USB C cables with adapters at the ends rather than RJ45 from start to finish? I'm thinking of a time when boat loads of bandwidth could be useful to have (networked computing components like eGPUS being shared), multiple 8K video feeds etc... Can USB C do everything RJ45 already does but faster? [link] [comments] |
Which wi-fi router? (I have few unusual requests) Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:13 AM PDT Hello guys, could you please help me to choose wi-fi router for my specific needs? Just to get you quick snapshot of my home network, I have some shitty EuroDOCSIS modem/router from my ISP, which can be remotely controller by them. I have a lot of smart home devices. I set their preferred IP address, but I cannot rename them directly in router interface. Therefore it's a mess. Anyway here goes my special requests. I want a router, which would have two internet sources. One primary, which would be my cable, and one secondary, which would be LTE through SIM card. I do not want both sources to be used simultaneously, I just need backup, so when my cable internet goes down, LTE kicks in. The second request is, I want to be able to use VPN. I'm using ExpressVPN in few of my devices. But for example, I cannot use it with my TV, and therefore my Netflix library is very limited. Ideally, I want to use VPN only for specified devices, but I doubt that there is a router, which would allow such settings. I think this could be bypassed by another router, which would be configured to use VPN. But then I would have three routers, and that's sounds... complicated. Anyway, any advice is appreciated! Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:49 AM PDT Can anyone recommend a DLNA/UPnP media player (not server) for the Roku box? I just bought a Buffalo Linkstation 520 and discovered the stock Roku "Media Player" will not work with the Buffalo Linkstation 520 using DLNA/UPnP for some reason. Although the Buffalo Linkstation 520 is advertised as a DLNA/UPnP media server, the stock Roku "Media Player" doesn't like it. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. [link] [comments] |
