    Simple Questions - April 25, 2018

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Finally put the finishing touches on my first PC today. Feels great to have made it to the promised land.

Went for a red and black aesthetic and I think turned out really nice.

Is the 780ti still a competitive card?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:30 PM PDT

    I have 200$ to build a pc for a friend, and I think I've found a way...

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 09:03 AM PDT

My friend has a really, really shitty 12 year old, AMD Athlon X2 240 with 4GB of RAM PC and no room for upgrading anything. His Radeon HD card died two years ago and he bought a r7 240 just to have something to run video on. However I wanted to do him a favor, and I found a really good (business used, auctioned off) second hand PC.

It has a i7-2600, 4GB of RAM, a decent motherboard, HDD, case and power supply, it was a HP Compaq 8200, prebuilt PC, and there is a bunch of them for sale. This gives me a bit more reassurance that it wasn't tampered with by some kid. Also the guy selling them is giving some sort of guarantee that if it doesn't work he'll give me another one.

This PC is about 150 euros, which I think is an OK deal, and my idea is to take out my friend's r7 240 and pop it into that and get another 4GB of RAM for $20 (my friend might actually already have DDR3 memory in his current PC, but it might also be DDR2). So he ends up with a i7-2600 with 8GB of memory and a r7 240, which I think is decent for a 180 euro (200$) investment. He plays games like Fortnite and older Total War titles, and I'm almost 100% sure he is CPU constricted in those games (he is in the Total War games, I've seen the CPU lag it's over 15s at times). The r7 240 isn't a powerhouse but I think his cpu/mb/ram needs an upgrade much more than his GPU (especially in this market).

EDIT: Also keep in mind we are in a small country in Europe, so there is a lot less hardware going around and that's why this deal seems good to me.

Strange issue: New PC reboots randomly about 1-2 times a week, now solved! (Troubleshooting info)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:31 AM PDT

I built a new PC late 2017 and it worked great apart from one strange issue; My computer turned on and off again at seemingly random times and it would do this about 1-2 times a week. This is very odd considering my computer is often on a lot and under heavy loads, but these shutoffs would be during non-intensive use like web-browsing and watching videos.

    So I googled the issue, and found many different similar issues that seemed to be anything from PSU to faulty RAM. I did a memtest on the RAM and it came out fine. Then it struck me to view the event-log. I did so and the only useful info from the log was events like these at each shut-down;

    Critical - Kernel-Power Event-ID 41 (63)

    Now more googling still led nowhere, as this is a very general error. Then it struck me to look at preceeding events and see if anything else was causing an issue before the shutdown and sure enough, before every critical event there was an event like this;

    Error EnhancedStorage-EhStorTcgDrv Event-ID 10 Driver

Now these preceeded each shutdown and always by just around a second so it was safe to say it was the cause. After googling it seemed a simple BIOS update would solve it.

So, I flashed the BIOS with EZ-Flash (Asus z370 board) and after I did that 3 weeks ago I have not seen the issue again. Just thought I should share in case anyone suffers from a similar issue. It looks like there is an issue with the Crucial MX500 interacting with a motherboard with an older BIOS.

After the flash I still occasionally get the same errors, event-id 10 - but this time they do not cause a reboot. Feel kind of dumb that the solution was so simple, but at least others can learn from my mistake!

TLDR: Random shutdowns 1-2 a week - showed Kernel-Power Event-ID 41 in the event-log, was preceeded by EnhancedStorage-EhStorTcgDrv Event-ID 10 - this was solved by simply flashing the BIOS.

I'm 14, have a good amount saved up, and I want to build a pc. :)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:12 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I intend to use this pc to play games at 1080p 144hz at 144fps at the lowest. I want to get the best bang for my buck and have the best chance of being able to play games for the next 4-5 years.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p, 144fps, 144hz. I tend now to use medium settings but I plan on disabling things like shadows and the like. Like how the pro fortnite/cs players disable the unneeded graphics.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Anywhere from 600-900. I know its a big range but I can shell out that much if it means I get good bang for buck.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    About chairs

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:59 PM PDT

    Unconventional question here.

How do you choose a chair for gaming? what do you look at? the quantity of hours and the tension during gaming + a not ideal chair creates back and neckpain

Edit: I don't like wasting money but at this point I'm not too concerned about price since it really influences my wellbeing

Why are prices for GPUs significantly lower on the NVIDIA website, than on Amazon through companies like MSI or such?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:35 AM PDT

What do these companies add to the GPU? Is it not the same thing just buying the GPU from the NVIDIA website?

EDIT: Lots of helpful answers. Thank you everyone. Great community!

I need some help with my DirectX12

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:25 PM PDT

My pc which runs with windows 10 on directX12 doesn't run some games, the game that fails to start is a game I have played before hand without any problem. The error that comes up is something like "Download DirectX version 11.0 to run this engine" this hasn't happened before, although I was having some problems with my pc where it said no audio device is plugged in. I have since fixed that, by updating something, which I believe now to of been the DirectX11 to DirectX12. I have searched endlessly online for help, everyone seems to just say that DirectX12 will run DirectX11. Which in my case doesn't work. Also there doesn't seem to be a way to downgrade from 12-11. So at the moment I'm kinda stuck. Any help or advice would be amazing, Thanks

    Rackmount Gaming PC

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:44 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to build a 4U rackmount gaming PC for Steam remote streaming.

I'm looking for a case that meets these requirements, has rack ears, is compatible with sliding rails, supports a standard ATX or smaller mobo, standard ATX PSU, and a large GPU like a 1080. I would prefer i5 or i7 support.

    DDR3 or DDR4 is fine. I only need 16 GB (2x 8 GB)

I would prefer external hotswap drive bays but would consider internal instead.

Also, airflow needs to be front to back when mounted to match rack airflow configuration.

    Thanks.

    Looking to upgrade GPU...

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:24 PM PDT

Hello all! I've never built my own computer before and the current computer I have is about 5 years old. My GPU is finally starting to show some scary sign of wear and tear. I've been getting a lot of black screens and image tearing and stretchy textures and so I've been saving up to upgrade my GPU. Right now I have a AMD Radeon R9 380 and my budget is around 250-300$ what would be a good GPU considering my budget? Thanks!

I want 32GB in the future so I leave 2 slots to expand to that. I'm reusing a GeForce GTX 750 Ti I already have but will upgrade that in the future as well. I'd also like to upgrade my monitors to 144hz 2440p. For now, this video card runs all the games I play just fine even if they're on low. I want a good CPU for programming work. I'd also like to overclock it, that's why the d15s. That 500GB SSD will be supplemented by a 250GB SSD I have right now.

Found an excellent way to further improve gpu cooling

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:40 AM PDT

So I got a 90mm fan for free buying something else. I decided to put it around empty pci slots, right below my gpu as a small exhaust fan. Of course there's nowhere that my 90mm fan can screw onto, so I added a small piece of magnetic tape and settle it above my psu. It's more like an experiment and I thought the improvement will be very much minimal.

Yet the result after full load showed my gpu dropped a solid 7°C, to an average of 58°C. More incredibly, my cpu runs at around 4°C lower, at average of 57°C while I'm gaming. My educated guess is the tiny fan spontaneously pulls all the heat generated from my gpu, so less heat is stuck inside my case that exacerbates the effectiveness of the cpu heatsink.

I think whoever's using open-style gpu should look into getting one of this tiny fan since they aren't expensive at all (my fan is an off-brand that I've never heard of), yet it could help your cooling tremendously.

To stream and game, i would also like a PC that can record audio/music decently.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p at the lowest, 60+fps, High/Ultra graphics, even while streaming

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around $1,000-$1,500 USD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

So if I have windows 10 on my old PC, do I need to buy a complete new windows 10 for my new one? I upgraded from windows 7 to 10 for free on my old PC so I don't have the windows 10 disc or anything like that. I was also interested in a tower with no optical drive, would you guys recommend that since now a days i cant even remember using a disc to download something, besides an OS, and if I want this other tower, to download windows 10 am I going to have to get a version on a USB flash drive?
