Why Some Android Phones Slow Down As They Age - Storage fragmentation in Android plays a major role in the ageing performance of the phone

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:28 AM PDT

Fuchsia OS just showed up in AOSP, but most importantly, in the ART (Android Runtime) branch. Looks like they're building Fuchsia with ART...which would suggest native Android app support.

I made an app for people who set multiple alarms

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:24 AM PDT

I know there are a lot of people who set 5 or more alarms, with 5 minutes between them, to be sure they wake up. I do that too, because when only setting one alarm I often click dismiss instead of snooze and then I get too late to college.

It's a hassle to set 5 alarms by clicking 5 times 'add a new alarm' and keep choosing a time for 5 times. That's why I decided to make an app that does this with just one click.

Within the app you can customize how many alarms you want and what the time difference between these alarms should be. There is also a smart setting which chooses the time difference for you.

The app also offer a timer, stopwatch, themes and other settings.

This is my first app I ever built on Android. Because the Android framework was new and complicated to me, I decided to use an open source app and modify it to my liking. I used ClockPlus for that.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'd also like to hear some feedback.

Play Store Link. OneClock Free. Click here

Edit: I'm going to sleep, I will answer to questions and feedback tomorrow during college.

    IO WiFi Password is Pineapple

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:54 PM PDT

Just noticed the WiFi password at Google IO will be p1n3appl3.

I know they've teased like that before. Noticeable in '15 where multiple people on stage had Wear watches with Milkshakes on them. But that didn't turn out to go that way.

    (Review/Guide)Airpods on Android

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 06:13 AM PDT

I know, I know, an Apple product with Android.

But Airpods are actually a very viable product on android, and I'd even go as far as to say, they are one of the best option for truely wireless earbuds.

Others are great: Jaybird Run, E&O E8, Bose Soundsports Free, but after using the airpods for a while, I can say it is worth buying them outright for an android, here is their advantage/disadvantage, and how to maximize your use of them on Android.

    Advantages

    • Best connectivity (they have a crazy range, and never lose connection thanks to Apple's amazing W1 Chip)

    • Great Case (compared to other options, the charging case is very user friendly, fits easily in a pocket, and gives a whooping 5 full charges for the earbuds)

    • Great fit (this is 100% subjective, but I have weird ears and somehow apple earbuds have always fitted my ears perfectly)

    • retain most features from using them with Iphones (people have a misconception that not using those with Iphones makes you lose features. While you don't have a connection as seamless as with Iphones because of the W1 Chip, you retain almost everything)

      • auto-detection when opening the case
      • Auto play/pause when removing one airbud from ear (tested on Netflix, Play Music & Spotify)
      • Double tap left earbud to skip track, right earbud to play/pause (to set this up, you will need to set it up with a friend's iphone, then the settings works on Android)

    Disadvantages

    • average sound (they don't seal in the ear, nor noise cancel like sony's and others, so sound is only slightly better than regular earbuds, with stronger bass)

But let's be real, if your priority is sound quality, don't look at bose soundsfree,or any other alternative, just move away from this segment of technology for now, because despite advancements in bluetooth codecs recently (aptx hd, LCAC Sony, etc.) you will NEVER achieve anything close to a good old wired pair.

    • ugly (this is subjective, but the form factor with the long stick looks like the top of an electronic toothbrush)

    • requires Iphone (to update firmware, and modify double tap gestures on both earbuds, if not, it does play/pause by default)

    • Price (this could be debatable, since they are same price as other main Bose, Jaybird competitors)

Recommended apps to help or change the experience

Hope this helps some people, I am personnaly very happy with my purchase of this Apple product, as an Android enthusiast.

edit Seeing a few comments, it seems important to mention, that despite being flawless on my Essential PH-1, the mic function doesn't work completely, or at all for some android users. This could potentially be a dealbreaker for these people, but I haven't experienced it.

The state of background service's RAM/memory usage in 2018: your thoughts and opinions

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:24 PM PDT

It might be worth (re?)discussing this in 2018, because we have a wide range of device specs (recently up to 8GB phones), and initiatives like Android Oreo (Go edition) for low-spec devices to run smoothly.

How much average constant background RAM usage do you consider to be too much? Are there apps with background services that you've uninstalled because after setup they noticeably increased the chance of other apps being killed off on your device, or do you just look at the recorded average usage numbers alone?

List your RAM spec and OS version, and how anything along these lines might affect you. Obviously, users with 6 to 8GB phones care about this less, but it would be interesting to hear their experiences too.

This is meant to be separate from a battery usage discussion. They can be related, but a constant running service does not necessarily mean that it's actively doing things internally, it could just be waiting for specific events to happen and rarely perform actions.

    Galaxy S8 - 1 Year Later

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 12:51 PM PDT

Yesterday it's been exactly one year since i have the Galaxy S8 and i wanted to share what happened to the phone.

This may come as a surprise, or not. But unfortunately the phone lags... allot. The home button lag has become worse over time and so has the input lag. I believed that Oreo would fix all my problems, but it made it worse.

But setting your animations at 1.5x makes the lag a little less noticeable. If you can live with it.

The battery has definitely, 100% not aged like fine wine. It's horrible, i get around 4 hours of on screen time, just by watching Youtube videos. The fast charging is the same, still charges fast.

The display is fine - no burn in or anything like that.

That's about it, the main problem is the software lag.

Keep in mind that i have only four apps installed, the rest are bloatware so the lag is not my fault.

Galaxy S9 Plus: One Month Later

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 10:20 AM PDT

With all these 18x9 ratio phones coming out, any of you still have love for the old 16x9 ratio phones?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:35 PM PDT

Recently going from owning a Samsung S8+ to a Moto X4 (for carrier reasons) I thought I would hate going back to the old aspect ratio. But honestly I kind of like how every app just works the way it's supposed to on 16x9 screens. I know for lots of videos and games 18x9 just wastes space by not using it all properly which was annoying. Also 18x9 screens are taller and harder to use 1 handed unless you have a smaller than 5.5 in screen.

What are your opinions? Do you guys prefere one over the other? Or does it not matter?

How often do you switch phones?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:16 AM PDT

    Hi

My phones usually last 2 years. I just want to know how long a Android phone should be able to be usable, as my current S7Edge is still pretty great at basic tasks.

This post will probably get a lot of downvotes.

Android apps: Why do they all not have volume soft key UI?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:35 PM PDT

I don't understand why Android apps don't have volume soft key on the screen to change the volume in any apps. Netflix might be the only one, but even so, I feel it just acts as a trigger for the hard physical button because the volume overlay UI is the same as that. Shouldn't it be a volume slider within the app?

Youtube, google music, nbcsn, hulu, youtube kids/music...you would think all the media apps would allow you to use the touchscreen to change the volume. Nope. You always have to use the physical buttons. Unless you use some floating app in the background.

Does anyone know why? Does Apple have a patent for volume control on touchscreens? It's probably the biggest fault I can find on Android.
