Sunday Rant/Rage (Apr 22 2018) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Weekend poll: Are you using any Google messaging apps like Allo, Hangouts, or Android Messages?

I've conducted a Galaxy S9 battery survey. Here are the findings.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 12:17 PM PDT

The Galaxy S9's battery life has seen some complaints here and there. So I decided to conduct a survey on r/GalaxyS9 and XDA to analyze the statistics using the power of RStudio. Here are the results.

    Quick rundown:

    Pie chart distribution

    Model Number of responses
    S9 Exynos 41
    S9+ Exynos 74
    S9 Snapdragon 56
    S9+ Snapdragon 91
    Total 262

Battery satisfaction per Model on a scale from 1 to 5:

    Bar Plot distribution

Model Mean Satisfaction (1 to 5) Standard Deviation
    S9 Exynos 2.829268 1.1597939
    S9+ Exynos 3.364865 1.0146100
    S9 Snapdragon 4.053571 0.8403385
    S9+ Snapdragon 4.054945 1.0040212

Exynos users were much less satisfied. S9+ Snapdragon users had the highest % of 5/5 satisfaction. S9 Exynos users had the highest % of 1/5 satisfaction.

    Screen on Time

    Bar Plot distribution

    By Model:
Model Mean Screen On Time (Hours) Standard Deviation (Hours)
    S9 Exynos 4.671429 1.150082
    S9+ Exynos 5.108696 1.251086
    S9 Snapdragon 5.500000 1.336875
    S9+ Snapdragon 5.487179 1.549978

Overall, Snapdragon variants were lasting longer. S9+ Exynos wasn't too far behind its Snapdragon variants. However, S9+ Snapdragon had the highest proportion of users reporting more than 9 hours of SoT.

    By Resolution:
Model Resolution Mean Screen On Time (Higher is better)
    S9 Exynos 1440p 4.687500
    S9 Exynos 1080p 4.722222
    S9+ Exynos 1440p 5.182927
    S9+ Exynos 1080p 4.981481
    S9 Snapdragon 1440p 5.404762
    S9 Snapdragon 1080p 5.576923
    S9+ Snapdragon 1440p 5.484127
    S9+ Snapdragon 1080p 5.500000

Display resolution doesn't really seem to affect battery life. All data for 720p were omitted since there were only 4 responses for 720p.

    By Network Preference:
Uses LTE more than Wi-Fi? Mean Screen On Time
    No 5.383495
    Yes 5.145833
    Equal usage 5.145570

LTE seems to drain the battery faster than Wi-Fi.

    By Power Saving Preference:
Uses medium power saving mode? Mean Screen On Time
    No 5.185
    Yes 5.700

Pretty large differences. It seems like the CPU Limiter really improves SoT.

    Overnight drain

    Bar Plot distribution

    By Model:
Model Mean drain % (lower is better) Standard Deviation
    S9 Exynos 5.801724 1.150082
    S9+ Exynos 5.846154 1.251086
    S9 Snapdragon 5.172619 1.336875
    S9+ Snapdragon 5.487179 1.549978

Snapdragon models perform slightly better when it comes to standby time. The differences are pretty minor however.

    By Always On Display preference:
Uses Always on Display? Mean drain % (lower is better)
    No 5.129310
    Yes 5.701493
    Sometimes 4.891667

Turning off AoD seems to be a reliable way to decrease standby drain.

Other comparisons were not included either due to not much significant differences, or inconclusive results due to limited sample size.

    Conclusions:

    • Overall results seem to agree with AnandTech's battery testing.
    • Snapdragon variants overall had higher battery satisfaction, higher SoT and lower overnight drain.
    • The plus and regular models had very similar battery life on the Snapdragon models, unlike on the Exynos models.
    • The S9+ Snapdragon model had the highest standard deviation. It had the highest number of people reporting more than 9 hours of Screen on Time.
    • Almost no one uses 720p display resolution.
    • Display resolution (1080p vs 1440p) has little to no impact on battery life.
    • LTE users had less SoT than Wi-Fi users. However, display brightness could be the confounder (people who use LTE are more likely to be outdoor, thus use higher brightness).
    • Medium power saving mode (CPU Limiter and Background network limiter) seems to be the most reliable way of increasing SoT.
    Errors and survey improvements:
    • Sample size could be larger.
    • Finer choices for SoT might have been better. Also, SoT less than 3 hours or more than 9 hours were omitted.
    • When calculating overnight drain, each of the percentage choices wasn't always the same in size. Didn't receive enough responses. Too many responded with "I don't know".
    • The survey was surprisingly well received. Depending on people's requests, I might make another survey with better design (such as including app usage), and a much larger sample size for even more accurate results in the future.

LPT: You can watch any YouTube video in the app using the video URL, just by entering & searching the URL in search box within the app

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:19 AM PDT

It works for all kinds of YouTube URLs: desktop, mobile & shortened video URL (youtu.be).

This is especially useful if you want to watch an embedded video in a website from the browser on the YouTube app. Just copy the video URL to clipboard and search it in the search box. The video will appear as a search result.

    (Example)

Note: In few cases, search might display more than a single video in search results. In such cases, the first result is the video you're looking for.

r/WearOS is the new home for Wear OS/Android Wear!

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 09:36 PM PDT

Ever since the big rebranding of Android Wear to Wear OS, the r/AndroidWear team has known it was about time for a new home here on reddit. We've been hard at work creating a beautiful subreddit in r/WearOS, and we hope our work speaks for itself (especially on the Reddit redesign version).

If you're interested in smartwatches or are rocking a Wear OS watch, we'd love to have you around! We've got tips and tricks galore, plus super-helpful watch recommendatuons in the sidebar.

Today, we also switched off new posts on r/AndroidWear per user feedback and finished moving over the wiki, so it's been one heck of a day!

    Hope to see you 'round.

tl;dr: if you're into Google's wearables, it's time to unsub from r/AndroidWear and subscribe to r/WearOS, which is the a lot of the same but even better!
