Looking for a vertical laptop stand for my EVGA sC17

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:52 PM PST

I recently bought EVGA SC17 and I hook it up to an external monitor/mouse/keyboard. As you guys might know it weights about 10lbs so I'm not sure the typical stands on amazon will be able to support that weight.. I'm looking for something like this or a similar solution.

    Laptop for £500-£700 UK

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 09:47 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £500-£700 in UK
      • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Long battery life a must, not fussed about 2in1 form factor but I don't want to limit number of ports so a normal tablet with detachable keyboard is a no. Specs may be important... See below
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very, it should be portable
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
      • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. So I will only be using it to take some online courses but husband wants to try out some CAD programs for designing models. No research into which program yet but just adding that detail so you know it's not major engineering CAD. It's also why I put such a large budget range. I'd prefer to stick to £500 but I'm aware the CAD requirement may blow it out of the water
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard, reliable build. Would prefer to pay more for one that will last. My first laptop lasted 5 years, I cheaped out on my second and it lasted 2
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not that I can think of right now!

Color calibration on laptop and monitor

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 06:58 AM PST

I calibrated the colors on my laptop screen but the same calibration appears when I plug an external monitor. Is there a way to seperate the calibration of the two, meaning only have my laptop screen be affected by the calibration?

    Asus zenbook ux430ua 14' or acer swift 3 14'

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:49 PM PST

Looking at a laptop like these two. Going to be using it for school (word-processing, spreadsheet, etc.) And would like something MacBook size but not mac price or os haha. Feel like these are good options and good price sub $1000 (Canadian dollars) which one would you go with or would you go with something completely different? Looking to stay in the $1000 price range.

Need help finding a light-weigth linux laptop

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:01 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is between 800 and 1300 EUR, but I'm not sure if a cheaper model wouldn't do the trick as well. Country is Austria.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications definitely, but good battery life would be a strong plus. 2 in 1 is not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? very. I want to replace my current laptop (ThinkPad T420) with a lighter model, so I can easily carry it around with me. Thinness is less important than weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Primarily Linux, but likely in a dual-boot with Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13 and 14 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Main use is for programming, so starting some heavy IDEs should not cause any issues. No gaming requirements.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Coming from a Thinkpad, new laptop must have a solid keyboard and touchpad. I'm also looking for reliable build quality and a nice display (not QHD). Touch-screen and finger-print reader are nice to have but not important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like the latest processor (i7 Gen 8), because I'm planning to use the device for the next 5+ years. Linux compatibility is of course also necessary.

I've looked into XPS 13 3960R (I would like to have USB-A), which looks very nice but is also on the pricier side (1300 EUR here). There's also the coil whine issue. https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/dell+xps+13+9360r+ultrabook+326952

I've also looked at these, which would be fine but I prefer the look of the XPS: ASUS ZenBook UX3430UA, Lenovo IdeaPad 720S-13IKBR / YOGA 720-13IKBR

I've also looked into Clevo models such as the Slimbook, but I'm not convinced of the build quality/keyboard.

I'm wondering if I can't get away with something far cheaper, considering I don't really need that much horse power. Another possibility would be to use a less powerful processor (i5 Gen 8 / i7 Gen 7).

    Any help would be appreciated!

Need recommendation for new laptop with video card

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 10:51 AM PST

I am getting pretty overwhelming anxiety trying to choose a new laptop. This was not a planned purchase, my computer died on my 2 days ago and now I am scrambling at internet cafes to get work done and pick a new one. Trying not to make a bad decision in a rush.

My old laptop was an HP EliteBook 8560 with upgraded RAM to 8GB. I liked that it had a dedicated video card as I do some video editing with Adobe Premiere Pro.

The new laptop must have a new video card, though it would be nice to upgrade to a 2GB card instead of a 1GB card.

My only complaints about the old laptop were that it was heavy and had a really short battery life.

What are my options? This was a completely unplanned expense, but I understand its part of the cost of doing business (I use my computer to make a living as a digital nomad doing website design, development, marketing, and am now doing more and more video editing work).

I bought the old laptop used 3 years ago for $400 off a student at MIT. I am pleased with that purchase. And also realize I may not be so lucky as to get another for $400 today. I checked out DELL Refurbished but there stuff seemed kinda low-powered in the laptop department and nothing was running Windows 10 which seemed weird.

I´ve read some blogs but everything feels like a paid advertisement. Just can´t trust anything... sucks. Please help!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -$700, I´m in Costa Rica right now and will be returning to the United States on March 11. I imagine it´ll make more sense to buy in the US but I am also somewhat in a jam right now without a computer.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • What is 2 in 1? Like a tablet and a laptop in one? No... I want a laptop with a bit of power. No need for a touch screen. Battery life sucks on my last computer, would be nice to improve on that. And good specs for money is important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      • This was a big comlaint on my last computer, thing weighed a ton.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows... I don´t love Windows 10 but I got used to using it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • I´m used to having larger laptops, it doesn´t need to be huge but I´m not looking for one of those tiny ones.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, I run Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro. Planning on learning to use After Effects. No gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      • N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • Nice keyboard would be nice. No need for a touch screen. The SSD hard drives seem to be faster which I like.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • I´m in Costa Rica for another 9 days... I imagine I am best off ordering the computer shipped to the US but I feel really stuck right now without one.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -good keyboard travel/ decent display 1080p upwards no PWM, dont mind optical drive don't know why all the hate :d but not necessary, solid build reliable but not as much as the t410 in weight / thickness

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • dont mind buying used or refurbished looking for a laptop with great screen no PWM backlight, quiet, good keyboard travel, doesnt have to be super thin and light just a lot better than the t410, was looking at new lenovos but heard they have adware/spyware build into the bios in the later revisions which put me off

powerspec 1510 and 1710 Worth it?

I'm reluctant to purchase the laptop. I can't find much information about it, aside from the magazine article it advertises as supporting its credibility as a sweet deal. I've seen posts about it being a rebranded laptop, but does it have a technical reason it sells for 300 less than its competitors? http://www.microcenter.com/product/486481/1510_156_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

How long will gTX 980M will last?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 03:31 AM PST

So I have this laptop with GTX 980M (4GB) version. I just wanted to hear your laptopers' opinion, how long this card will be at least decent and when it is time for an upgrade (Or maybe it will be worth to sell it now and buy a new one?). That said, I like to enjoy AAA titles occasionally but I consider buying regular pc for that. However, I travel a lot, thus I use my laptop for medium to heavy gaming when I am on road and have time.

What is the best school laptop between 400-600 euro?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:42 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

Next year I'll need a better laptop for school. I want it to the things I need for school, as fast as possible. By that I mean that a SSD is a must, enough RAM and a quick CPU.

Now my problem is that there seem to be so many laptops. I want the best buy for my money. The battery life isn't that important for me, the speed is.

What are the best laptops to buy between 400-600 euro? Hopefully someone is able to help me!

(I'm from EU, if that could somehow help you)

    Used laptop for work

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 11:52 PM PST

I have a chance to buy a used (it's in mint condition) Dell Latitude E5470 for 350. Specs are:

    i5 6300u 8gb ram 256gb SSD 1080P screen Windows 10 Pro

I've also been eyeing Lenovo T440s models on Ebay. I need something with at least an i5 (4th gen or newer), 8 gb ram and an ssd. Windows 10 being included is preferred but not necessary. A 1080p screen and being able to run Diablo 3 are also preferred but nowhere near necessary. I want to spend as little as possible, since I have a high end desktop rig already and this thing will literally just be for use on the road and at work. Is this deal worth it? Can I do better?

Extending 7th gen intel laptop Battery life?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 10:58 PM PST

    So, I have an Acer Aspire VX 15 with a i7 7700HQ, and a GTX 1050 TI,

I want to try to extend the battery life to as long as possible, just to use for web browsing.

I only let games use the DGPU, and nothing else is using it, my battery life is about 4 hours right now, but I'm wondering if there's anything, even the extreme to pump out another 30 minutes?

I'm using battery saver (built in to Win10) too, this helps a little as well.

Mostly I want this for car trips where I can't plug in (I'm aware of inverters).

New laptop needed for university and general use

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 09:16 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      Australia, probably about $2500 AUD.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 isn't necessary, but I don't mind if it's included. Decent battery is preferred. I want it to be able to last a day. Good value is also preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important. I'm thinking more along the lines of an Ultrabook: fairly thin and light. I need to lug it around in a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferred 13 inch. Might consider 15 if the value is there.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

None of the above really planned. Maybe some super light gaming, don't take it into account.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a must. I'd also like really nice build quality, and a nice touchpad. Touchscreen would be cool too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been using cheapish laptops for the last few years and I'm just sick of it. Slow performance, poor build quality and a short lifetime.

I just want a quick, reliable and wellbuilt laptop that I can use at University.

    Thanks in advance!

    Laptops with HDDs

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:47 PM PST

Do the HDDs in laptops usually fry pretty quickly? I'm looking at a laptop for gaming, but it only has a 256gb SSD, with a 1TB HDD. I'm a little nervous to buy a laptop using an HDD because of the moving parts in the HDD lead me to believe it would break pretty quickly in a laptop that gets moved around often. Thoughts?

    New Laptop ~ $2500 CAD Screen Size ~ 13-15"

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:19 PM PST

Hey guys, hoping you could help me out. Heres a summary using the form:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2500 CAD [Canada]

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are a must for me, but I'm hoping to get around 8 hours of battery life (not using CAD or anything heavy duty)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight does not matter, but I do like the aesthetics to look nice. Not a necessity though.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13" - 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, DaVinci video editing and watching/editing videos in 4K resolution!

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not a gamer, unfortunately, lol

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A backlit keyboard would be a plus, but not a huge selling point.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just want to say thanks to this community for existing and helping those that suck at understanding why an i5 can be better then an i7 lol tried to read the forum but its so overwhelming!

    You guys rock, thanks!
