Has anyone used Lynda for LPIC-1 and CompTIA Linux+ exam prep? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:25 PM PST My University gives each of its students a free subscription to Lynda. For those that dont know, Lynda was created by linkedIn, and basically has a ton of how videos. They feature a "Learning Path" for the linux+ exams, and was wondering if anyone has used it? I really want to know if it is worth my time? I am planning on getting a book to supplement my learning. Might be helpful to have some kind of IT certificate before I graduate with a BS in IT... If anyone has any other tips for the exam, please include them! [link] [comments] |
Help needed making a Linux machine and a windows machine setup seamless Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:53 PM PST I have this situation that requires me to have a windows machine and a Linux machine at my desk. I have to regularly switch between them and I want the experience to be as seamless as possible. Tried using virtual machines but it didn't quite do the trick for my work. I already have synergy up and running which is great, what more can I do to make it better? [link] [comments] |
Screen scaling? Or how to get the screen to fit on my display. Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:53 AM PST Hi folks, I'm going to run a Linux distro on a PC I got when I upgraded my parent's box. It's an Intel i5 CPU with the on-chip graphics (I forgot the exact model number at the moment) and for a display (at least while setting up the OS) I'm using an older Emerson LCD TV. The Image of the text when booting and trying to install software is pushed the left about four "letters" and it's the text is getting cut on both the top and bottom of the screen. In Windows, the Intel graphics driver package has a setting to adjust the size and position of the display area. I know Linux has the same thing(well I assume...) but for the life of me, I can't find a good set of instructions on display area placement. If I had the TV remote I would be able to adjust the display of the TV itself but I don't and the buttons on the TV don't allow me to adjust it like that. Please help this Newbie fix his display area. Thanks P.S. Should I/Can I cross-post this question to other subs? or is that "bad edicate"? [link] [comments] |
I can't change my resolution in Ubuntu Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:29 PM PST My resolution is stuck at 1024x768. My monitor is detected as a built-in display. I ran xrandr and it says the maximum and minimum resolutions are also 1024x768. Can anyone help? [link] [comments] |
Multiple config files possible? Posted: 02 Mar 2018 11:07 AM PST I have a laptop that I use on the go and at my desk. On the go it's i3 at 1080p at the desk it's openbox at 4k. It's really really annoying to have to mess around with configs every time I go between the two. How would I go about making this easier? [link] [comments] |
Advice on Dual Booting Drive Partition Architecture Posted: 02 Mar 2018 01:12 PM PST I'm running a 128 GB SSD (/dev/sda) and 1 TB HDD (/dev/sdb) setup with 16 GB RAM and Legacy BIOS and I'd like some advice on how best to architect dual-booting Arch Linux (primary OS) and Windows (really only for some video games I'm afraid won't be supported on Linux well [i.e. League of Legends & Overwatch]). This is the first time I've ever really gave drive partitions any thought so let me know if I'm being dumb. What I was thinking was: /dev/sda (128 GB SSD) * sda1 /boot ext4 1 GB * sda2 / ext4 80 GB * sda3 System Reserve NTFS 100 MB * sda4 Windows NTFS ~40 GB (remainder) /dev/sdab (1TB HDD) * sdb1 swap ext4 20 GB (note 1) *sdb2 /home ext4 800 GB *sdb3 Recovery - 450 MB *sdb4 (data) NTFS ~180 GB (remainder) (sdx1 & sdx2 => Linux, sdx3 & sdx4 => Windows) (note 1: ~1.5x RAM based on this suggestion) With my current setup, I barely use 150 GB on my HDD and hardly 80 GB (not including OS) on my SSD but I envision those numbers going up once I settle into a more stable setup. Does this architecture make sense? Am I missing something or not allocating the right amounts for something? Any recommendations / suggestions on the best way to go about doing this? (I'm planning on wiping everything and starting fresh) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:10 PM PST Is there a piece of linux software that I can load a vm image of a windows OS and, upon clicking an executable in the linux environment, have it run seamlessly via the vm image, but display as if it were running on the linux desktop, without ever seeing any part of the windows vm? We certainly have enough cores & ram to pull this off nowadays. [link] [comments] |
Problem with GPU passthrough [QEMU] [Arch] Posted: 02 Mar 2018 12:07 PM PST Hi! I've encountered a problem which makes me sick... I'm trying to avoid classic dual boot for better solution which is virtual Windows machine. But I can't deal with the problem that my GPU won't send any signal to HDMI or DVI-D port. But first.... My PC specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 6700K GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 MOBO: AsRock Fatality K6 Z170 RAM: G.Skill RipjawsV (16 GB) I've built linux-vfio from AUR (thanks to yaourt) and I'm using it right now. I've edited mkinitcpio.conf and added some modules. Also I'm using systemd-boot instead of GRUB, so I've done editing loader.conf and entries/linux-vfio.conf with proper stuff. My vfio.conf and blacklist.conf are in place and qemu can use UEFI to boot my virtual machine. I'm using virt-manager which is configured and ready to work. Here are my configs: /etc/mkinitcpio.conf: https://pastebin.com/Thqa3KJ1 /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/QUac89Wj /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: https://pastebin.com/JPXsUC1Z /boot/loader/loader.conf: https://pastebin.com/kPDV428p /boot/loader/entries/linux-vfio.conf: https://pastebin.com/XdRmzbwS /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf: https://pastebin.com/2p04UXN1 And some outputs: https://imgur.com/a/1IUJf I'm sure that I've done everything correctly but I can't get any output from my GPU under virt machune.... Any ideas? Help? Please, I'm dealing with this problem for 3 days ;-; And sorry for any mistakes, english isn't my mother language. [link] [comments] |
Debian root terminal not opening Posted: 02 Mar 2018 08:40 AM PST Bit of a weird one, essentially when I first boot up I can open root terminal fine, however if I close it and try to open the root terminal again it allows me to enter my root password but no root terminal appears. If I mistype my password it does throw an error but still no terminal. Any ideas how to fix this? On Debian 9.3 Another little annoyance is when dragging a program to the top of the screen as in to maximise the window like in Windows it instead defaults to covering only the top half of the screen, any ideas on fixing that? Cheers! [link] [comments] |

I have tried sudo apt purge on everything I can think of, and it is not existing in synaptic.
