Anyone got experience with the Lenovo YOGA Book ZA15 ?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 10:06 AM PST

You find the laptop HERE; and am primarily looking at the windows version as I never tried an android operating system for a computer. Have you?

Hi reddit- checking out this laptop since I think it suits my needs for school (and pretty much only that). Did you guys have any experience with it? I'm not expecting too much of it's power - except to be able to work the normal programs and pretty basic functions. A plus would be the ability to use image creating programs (like adobe). What's ur experience w it?

    Thanks all

Question regarding Cores with regards to 8th Gen and 7th Gen Laptops

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:05 AM PST

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question. I am currently thinking of buying a new laptop to replace my aging ASUS N550JV. I can either buy an existing I7 7700HQ Laptop or 8th Gen U from the various ones already (mostly the XPS15 since my budget is around 1.5k+USD) out or wait for the 8th gen HQ chip to come out. I heard that the new 8th Gen Chip will have more Cores (https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/Notebooks/News/_nc3/coffee_lake_5.PNG) 6 up from 4. What does this mean from a Performance Standpoint (Mostly when it comes to games as I am a gamer. Desktop not an option due to moving around alot)? I know that 6 cores is better than 4 generally speaking but better at what? A friend told me that currently a lot of games dont really/cant really make use of the extra cores, is this true? would that make the 8th gen equal to the 7th gen one if only 4 cores are in use? Sorry if these questions are noobish, I am not really Tech Savy. Also in terms of Processor strength is the 7700HQ stronger than the 8th Gen i7 U chips?

Need a Decently Priced laptop with great battery life, light weight and longevity (New)

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:54 AM PST

Hey guys, so I had my heart set on getting a thinkpad, but having had to sift through several and not finding a good price for a new laptop (X270 I can get for 1200CDN which is over my budget by at least 200 dollars). X270 had basically everything I wanted, but I'm willing to compromise in specs/durability/insane battery life for something slightly cheaper as I'm not well off.

I've been thinking about getting a 2-in-1 tablet computer like a microsoft surface. I do some light streaming on twitch, the most graphically intensive game being Dark Souls 1, and I have a decent time on my T430s, and anything recent is going to blow this thing out of the water in terms of processor and graphics card. I'd like to continue to do my streams through whatever I get, as well as light audio production and video production. I'm not looking for a beast, the streaming and video production are for a hobby, but the audio production is a little more important, though I believe I can get by with a lot out there.

I'm willing to check out anything at this point, as long as whatever it is won't break in the first couple years of use. I need something with reliability, great battery (at the very least 7 hours of actual word processing/web browsing at 75% or so brightness) and something that won't bog me down in weight as I will be traveling.

Thanks guys, I appreciate any insight!

Has anybody has experience with this company? Good/bad?

MSI GS63 (1050 edition) with 1080 Aorus oder Aero 15?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:25 AM PST

    Hello,

I would really appreciate help, having a hard time to decide which setup to take.

I'd get a MSI GS63 7RD Stealth at around 1800€ together with the 1080 gaming box from Aorus.

The Aero 15 from Gigabyte would cost me 1950€.

What would you choose and why?

Need help choosing between these laptops: Dell Inspiron with I5 and GTX 1060 vs I7 with GTX 1050 TI

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:57 AM PST

I'm having a hard time choosing between these laptops and would love to know which one you guys think I should get. I want a laptop that could play some more demanding games (such as Fallout 4 and Rise Of The Tomb Raider) and I would also love a laptop that could be used for Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro And After Effects. Both laptops come with 8gb Of ram and I was wondering which one would have a bigger difference: 1060 vs 1050 ti or an i7 vs i5.

What specs should I look for? Going to study software engineering.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:17 AM PST

I know nothing about computers (and laptops) so I have no idea what to look for. Does programming require any specific specs that should be good so that I can do my things without problems? I suppose even the weakest laptops can do the job but I guess I'll also have to learn how to use things like Photoshop and as far as I know it's a heavy program that requires certain specs to run smoothly. Also my budget is limited and that's why I want to know what I should focus on and what can be sacrificed. I have around 550$/450€ but I'm from Bulgaria so I guess I can't use foreign stores like amazon for good deals.

I'm asking only for specs I should look for. I'll make a separate thread if needed to choose a certain laptop. However suggestions are appreciated.

15"-19" Office Laptop, United Kingdom, £450 - £750 xpost: SuggestALaptop

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:59 AM PST

    x-posted to SuggestALaptop

Hi all, firstly, my thanks to you for taking the time to read and provide your advice. My sister has been running a desktop PC for roughly the last nine years, and it is now dying a slow death (the onboard graphics are dying). As such, we are now looking for a replacement laptop, primarily for office related work.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget between £450 and £750, United Kindom

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specification for the money and longevity - this laptop will literally be run into the ground (see lifespan of previous desktop!)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important. Ideally kept to minimums, but not at the sacrifice of overall specs. The laptop will mostly be used in an office setting, possibly linking up to an existing 19" display.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My sister has previously used a 19" monitor with a res of 1440x900. I believe that a 15" screen would work (due to higher res), and providing a VGA output is available, could be used in conjunction with the older screen. She is worried that if using the screen alone, the smaller screen size may not work for her (so larger possibly better).

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. MS Office, Internet browsing, DVD burning (ISO Burn)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming for this machine!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD - For speed, and longevity of the machine. Currently, the existing desktop PC has around 120GB storage in use (entirety of C:\ drive contents). DVD RW would be desirable but not essential. Optional docking station would be highly useful if available (this would need to sit into the overall budget). Finally, if you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read my post. :)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I prefer Lenovo, HP, Dell and Toshiba as brands. I have had very poor experiences with Acer in the past. My sister does not use a normal desktop mouse, so uses a MouseTrapper device (which converts a PS2 mouse to a rollerbar type arrangement). I intend to use a simple PS2 -> USB converted to continue the use of this. If an introductory MS office licence were included (or part of deal), this would be beneficial. I would prefer to buy from a well known, reliable online UK store. Finally, my thanks to you all for taking the time to read this post.

    Cheap laptop with backlit keyboard?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:41 AM PST

Help! I need a Windows laptop with backlit keyboard (so no Macbook for me). Not the gaming kind of backlit keyboard, just the normal kind (like the one Vivobooks have). I'm only going to use it for college stuff and watching some Netflix, so I don't need an overly powerful laptop with 4K screens. Full HD is appreciated though, but I can do without. Thanks!

    My maximum budget is $1000.

Laptop’s? Fast performance & completely new to the world of Computing.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 02:24 AM PST

Hey guys/gals. I'm a 26 year old dinosaur coming from Ireland. To say the lest I have absolutely no experience with computers. Okay! back in 2003 there was a computer in the house and I could work it relatively well to play Harry Potter lol. I could use paint and I could load a webpage that would have taken 4 years to complete. I hope this paints a full picture of my experience with what I'm about to ask. Coming from the country side in Ireland we use our hands for most work. The real world wasn't shown to us much so it's quite easy to get left behind. Anyways it's 2018! It's pretty clear to see that we are in the 4th industrial revolution for this world, and I want in. I'm a quick learner! And that is one of my most positive strengths. So I need a laptop! I need a laptop that will introduce me to the world of communicating with computers (coding, programming etc) I have 3000€ to spend on this path of self education with computers and I'm strongly thinking about MacBook. I love Apple to say the least but I do know that, like all products can be prone to flaws. I've used a windows 10 system on a computer that was worth about 250€ so I can't say I can tell the difference.

Anyways I could ramble all day. Ye get the picture lol.

I just want to know what opinions are out there for a computer that will not slow down for the next year or two. That I can edit movies/pictures and just generally get into the world of coding for 3k..

    Thanks for reading :) two420

Is this a good craigslist deal?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 08:47 PM PST

Hi! I'm buying my first laptop ever, on a pretty tight budget. Everything I know about good hardware for laptops I've pretty much learned in the past day, so it suffices to say I don't know much.

I've found a Craigslist listing for a Lenovo Yoga 720 13.3" laptop at $425 about 8months old (these are around $500-$800 new), here are some basic specs- 8GB RAM, 265 SSD, Intel Core i5-7200u

    Basically I have questions below-

    1. Is this a good deal, especially considering it's still under Lenovo warranty at less than a year old?

    2. I'm looking to use this for heavy internet browsing (I'm a researcher, so it's normal to have 30+tabs open at a time), heavy spreadsheets, light video/music streaming. Would this work for that? Also Is this a laptop that could be used for light video editing?

    Thanks for any advice!!

Help with laptop boot up problem.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:21 PM PST

So, I recently installed Ubuntu 17.10 alongside Windows 10.

But now, I'm not able to boot into BIOS, or any of the startup menu options.

I have a HP Envy 15 k102tx Laptop. Esc key is used to boot into the startup menu which further provides options (F10 - BIOS, F11 - RECOVERY, F9 - BOOT OPTIONS, ETC)

So in a normal case, if I press 'Esc', it would say 'Esc...Pause Startup' and then boot into the menu.

But now if I press 'Esc', it gets stuck at 'Esc...Pause Startup' and doesn't go anywhere.

    Please help.

Acer Swift 3 vs Asus S410UN

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:22 PM PST

Hi, I'm trying to get some opinions on these two laptops, unfortunately everywhere I ask I end up being ignored.

So I'm deciding between these two laptops which will be used for university w/ the occasional light gaming. None of the stuff I'll be doing is especially demanding, but I do like my PC's to be snappy.

    The two specific laptops are:

Specs for both are the same:

    • i5-8250U
    • MX-150
    • 8 GB RAM
    • 256 GB SSD

However it's from there that their similarities end.

Acer Swift 3 Asus Vivobook S14
Display Glossy, ~220 nits peak Matte, ~250 nits peak
    Weight 1.7 kg 1.3 kg
    Chassis Aluminium Plastic
    Battery 49 W/hr 42 W/hr, fast charging up to 60%
    Upgradeable Storage Storage, RAM

I'm buying in NZ, and I'd prefer not to import, so I think these are my two best options. My main concern with the Swift 3 is its screen, where's my concern with the S410UN is its battery life and build quality (noticeable keyboard flex seems to be a problem with this series).

An alternative device I've seen is the UX430UN which is 400 NZD more, but remedies some of the faults of these two laptops, but not without some cons of its own.

Which of these two laptops would you choose? Or have I overlooked another contender?
