Recovering Google Authenticator App keys Posted: 15 Feb 2018 02:42 AM PST Here's the fully low down; Old phone had a bunch of google authenticator keys on it for various things - social media accounts, emails, banking, etc. This is NOT the 2fa to access my google account, but me using the google authenticator app for other websites. Yesterday old phones screen broke. All but the top few pixels are just static. It can still take charge and be connected via USB to PC/etc, just that the screen is 100% useless. Today I bought a new phone to replace it. I assumed that when syncing to google these authenticator keys would carry over just like my photos, settings, etc - they did not. I really, really, REALLY don't want to go through the process of trying to recover quite literally 20+ accounts on various websites, especially since I know it may not be successful with some touchy ones. I need a way to either A: move these keys to my new phone or B: Access my old phone in some way that'll let me get the generated secret keys so I can manually log in to and deactivate the 2fa on my accounts, then manually reactivate on new phone. Please help! [link] [comments] |
nVidia 970 Dual Output (HDMI) works on Linux but not Windows? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 01:44 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/7q4xq2/nvidia_970_wont_dual_display_output_reward_if/ my old thread. I narrowed it down to being software related(?) by using a distro of linux and successfully having both displays work thus establishing it as a software issue. The displays both lose signal after BIOS loading so this makes me think its registry or could it still be outdated drivers/settings that weren't removed from DDU? [link] [comments] |
Windows laptop stuck in startup repair loop. Nothing from the recovery options works. Posted: 15 Feb 2018 12:44 AM PST After my previous post was removed due to violation of a rule, here I am posting it again. I've tried everything on the internet. The bootrec commands, chkdsk f and r for my drive, tried to restore to a previous point of time. Safe mode doesn't load, startup repair starts all over again. Startup repair doesn't work either, it fails to detect the problem. Is there a hardware fault that I'm not aware of? Mind you, I experienced a power failure before all of this happened. I don't have a disc at the moment. Is there anything left to do? Someone suggested unplugging the hdd and copying data and then erasing everything. Is there anything else i can do make sure there aint no software problems? Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Enabling HDR output in Windows 10 Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:45 AM PST My computer is as follows: Windows 10 Home Edition CPU: i5 4670K OC'd @ 4.4 GHz (constant, no boost) RAM: 16GB DDR3 RAM (1600MHz) GPU: ASUS STRiX GTX 1070 - 8GB DDR5 RAM SSD: 500GB Samsung Evo 840 HDD: WD Green 3TB Monitor/TV: 50" Samsung 4K HDR TV Alternative Visual Output: HTC Vive For background I am a software tester for a living, so by no means a layman with regards to computing. All drivers for everything are at the highest possible level. All windows updates are installed. Background As of the Fall Creators Update, Windows took control of the HDR output setting. So, whereas previously I would set this option in Nvidia Control Panel, I now have to enable it as per this guide. Why is this a problem? My TV requires you to enable HDMI 2.0 on your chosen HDMI port, and THEN, enable HDR mode. Once HDR mode is enabled, the selected HDMI input can ONLY receive an HDR compliant signal. Windows, in their infinite wisdom, decided to only show you the button to enable HDR, when the attached monitor/screen is seen as HDR compliant via the DXDIAG check. So - I enable HDR on my TV, boot the machine, I get "No Signal Found" on the screen. I disable HDR on the TV, the computer log in screen appears. I use the above guide - No HDR button - because the TV isn't in HDR mode. I enable HDR on the TV - I get "No Signal Found" on the screen. I have even gone to the lengths of getting DXDIAG typed into the run box, switching the TV to HDR mode and then hitting Return - this results in a DXDIAG result confirming the TV is HDR compliant. Windows have apologized to me via their webchat, but this doesn't help. Is this just a flat out design problem and just means I cannot enjoy full HDR content on my PC (for now at least). I have asked if there is a registry key I can edit, or a command line/powershell command I can run, but the support guy I was put in touch with said this was over and above his level of technical understanding (Pretty sure he didn't even know what these tools were....) and that I would have to pay for tier 2 support... Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:40 AM PST Hello complete computer noob here. I want to buy a game and I meet all the other requirements (Graphics card OS etc) However I need 4GB Ram to play it. I did buy the game through steam and I tried playing on the lowest settings but the lag was too much. I bought some Ram off the internet but my computer could not detect it. I have since returned the ram to get a refund. Here is what I know: My computer is 64x Bit Windows 10 Asus (I am at work so can update the model later) Currently running 2 GB Ram DDR3 at 1333MHZ speed and have 1 more slot available. Any help on what I can/should do. My budget is limited so 4GB will be enough so I can play the game. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Did my cat fuck up my SSHD during a Windows Update? Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:41 PM PST So my cat has sometimes fallen asleep on my laptop while its running and not locked. I always close my laptop while I'm gone for this reason. But I forgot to do so. When I got home she was chilling on the keyboard like it was her personal heating pad. The bad thing is that it was unresponsive. So I had to do a hard shut off. When it started, it immediately started system updating and installed the Windows Update. etc. etc. My dual solid state hardrive is now giving me a S.M.A.R.T error - I know from the past this is bad news. Here's a screen shot of the error: https://i.snag.gy/QaiulB.jpg Here's my computer specs https://i.snag.gy/jP6bE9.jpg I don't know what to do. And I'm not really technically- versed in computers. This laptop was a gift from my husband and we don't have a lot of money lying around for a replacement...it was supposed to last much longer. I've had it for exactly 2 years. I'm hoping someone tells me I can fix this somehow. Also, if its related to my cat or if its just a coincidence? How do I know which hardrive it is? Where can I get a free diagnostics test to run for an estimated date of failure? (I had Hard Drive Sentinel installed but I ran out of time on my free trial ) Should I try system restore to pre-Windows Update? What is the best way to go about delaying the inevitable? Is it inevitable? Can I even replace the hard-drive since its a dual harddrive? (Also why is my diagnostics tool greyed out here in the Intel Toolbox? And everything on both of these hard drives is green, I would assume that's a good sign? ) I would appreciate any help or information about what to do next. Really anything I can get, thank you very, very much. edit: some more relevant details in a reply to a helpful comment below: I downloaded HDD guardian and a few other hard-drive health diagnostics programs including Hard Disk sentinel. HDD guardian is prophesying doom but the others say my hard-drive is fine?: https://i.snag.gy/qo6IRi.jpg I looked on the tabs. Temperature has not exceeded 60 degrees. And this only S.M.A.R.T indicator in yellow was the load cycle count: https://i.snag.gy/QHoTWX.jpg https://i.snag.gy/bIwZs5.jpg Also cat is on the left https://i.snag.gy/bxmXfu.jpg [link] [comments] |

Easiest way to just manage a Facebook page from my iOS phone rather than having the app on my phone? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:21 AM PST FACEBOOK GROUPS * I'm an idiot. Kind of like the 'Facebook Page' app, but for Groups and Secret Groups etc. I know an official app isn't actually available. Any alternatives/tricks I should know about? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:19 AM PST So I was thinking of buying a new m.2 SSD. But I'm not sure what to do when it comes to software stuff. I am wondering if I can somehow move all the data on from my current ssd (that includes windows and other installed programs) to the new one and then use the old one as a secondary ssd to install games on? I'm having ugly text rendering problems on Windows 7 Posted: 15 Feb 2018 03:10 AM PST I'm using a Dell Latitude E6440, with Windows 7 Professional SP1. My email client and web browser are rendering text in a very ugly, inconsistent way. I tried changing ClearType settings, to no avail. But I suspect the problem is in the operating system, because Chrome, Firefox, and Thunderbird are all doing it. Any ideas? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Need finding a laptop CPU fan to purchase. Posted: 15 Feb 2018 02:41 AM PST Hello. I own a MSI gaming laptop. GE72 2QF. The CPU fan became unbalanced, or heck knows what. It's making all sorts of different sounds now. I tried bending the aluminium shell so the fans don't touch it, but still sound persists. I think most of the sound is coming from vibration. So I can't fix the fan, can't make it normal, so I'm looking for a new one to buy online. I found some which were saying that it's genuine for GE72, but it costs like 60 USD. The model number is PAAD06015SL, but there are some fans with the same number, but they have a different placements for screwing them, or they're upside-down. [link] [comments] |
How do I make a game shortcut run instantly in above normal priority and a set affinity? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 02:38 AM PST Hi, First of all here are some specs: i5 6500 MSI GTX 1060 6GB 500watt PSU Be Quiet ASUS MAXIMUS VIII GENE Motherboard So I like to play The Division but the game is poorly optimized and runs like shit. After some google research i found out that setting the priority to Above Normal and setting the Affinity to 3 cores 1 disabled makes the game more smooth and playable ( still fps drops but not as frequently). If i dont do this my CPU usage goes to 100% and my mouse starts lagging and makes it unplayable. I found a post somewhere on google to set both Priority and affinity on the shortcut so it launches with 3 cores and Above normal priority. But this didn't work and it crashed all the time when i started it up. Does anybody know how to do this? With a step by step guide so I cant go wrong. Or does anybody know another fix? I'd appreciate any tips and info. [link] [comments] |
Can undervolting GPU cause frame drops? Posted: 14 Feb 2018 10:50 PM PST I'm tinkering around with undervolting using Throttlestop, I've undervolted my GPU by -40 and I've never crashed or had any display artifacts. However I did notice I ran something intensive that normally runs 30FPS+ smooth and I was getting quite a bit of stuttering. Will undervolting too much (but not enough to crash) cause a GPU to perform worse? [link] [comments] |
Disk usage goes to 100% for 90+ minutes, how to stop this? Posted: 15 Feb 2018 02:28 AM PST The culprit in this case is Windows Problem Reporting. This has been the culprit a bunch of other times too. How do I completely turn this off forever so I can actually use my computer? [link] [comments] |
Very high GPU usage in certain games, getting around 10 fps Posted: 15 Feb 2018 02:25 AM PST Specs: Windows 10 Pro Processor: AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-Core Processor 3.70 GHz Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 RAM: 32.0GB Sorry bear with me it's pretty odd to explain. In some games (seems to be when a lot is happening on screen, large crowds in HITMAN for example) my GPU usage in task manger shoots up to around 95% and the game staggers to around 10 fps, but then I can look at the ground and it shoots back up to like 60 fps. But in other games (PUBG) its runs fine at 60ish consistently. I'll also mention a weird thing with the Steam app. When I just move the mouse over the library for example, my GPU usage goes to about 50% and sound (from spotify or discord for example) is like static-y. Genuinely no idea what is going on with it. The two biggest examples i've found are in Stick Fight the game and in the new Kingdom Come Deliverance. In stick fight its fine until I get into a multiplayer match and a lot is happening on screen, then it drops to about 5fps, my sound goes very static like and on discord my voice sounds like a robot. In Kingdom Come the game stays at around 10 fps constantly unless I look at the ground, then its goes up to 40/50. I've tried a fresh install of windows which didn't help. I also though maybe it was a virus that was using my machine as a bit coin miner but anti virus and root kits didn't find anything. I think everything is installed correctly but I could be wrong since we did it ourselves. If nobody really knows whats going on then i'll just take it to a repair shop and let them have a go at it. Thanks in advance, sorry if formatting is wrong or whatever [link] [comments] |
