Google might be adding support for adjusting Portrait Mode blur to Google Photos Posted: 14 Feb 2018 07:18 AM PST For the past few Android Police teardowns of Google Photos, some of the more intriguing findings have been of the "Austin's Mystery Feature" strings, which initially contained random symbols and were later updated to say "Hello Android Police". The most recent teardown made it more cryptic, with the four strings stating: "Robin", "Jauz", "Brita", and "Airplane", further confusing everybody. However, one commentator, "op12" noticed something interesting: the four strings were referenced in the code, and were associated with parameters in a graphics shader as follows: Robin -> depthBlurIntensity Jauz -> depthBlurShallow Brita -> depthAdjustmentsMultiplier Airplane -> depthBlurFocalPlane These are very interesting parameters, as they obviously imply settings for adjusting bokeh for a "depth blur" feature. While one commentor proposed that this indicated that Google was planning to add AI blur for all phones to Google Photos, I think it's more likely that we'll see adjustable bokeh for the existing Pixel 2 / XL Portrait Mode. Personally, that's super exciting, as that's really the only area where the Pixel's Portrait Mode falls behind some of its competitors. As for the weird names? Well, you could interpret them in any number of ways, but here's one way I came up with (it's also possible they're totally arbitrary):
All together, it's an alpha feature that lets you adjust the focal plane for bokeh-filtered photos in the cloud. Neat. [link] [comments] | ||
