Why does Windows 10 show the same picture on startup for days or weeks at a time, then suddenly show a few different ones, then go back to the same picture as before?

It makes no sense to me.

    Updates Won't Install

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 06:28 PM PST

I've had updates available for a good while now but despite restarting or anything they just won't install. A lot of times it seems they try but fail? Any idea what I can do without a complete re-install of the OS?

    Update just bricked my PC?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 06:27 PM PST

Windows just forced an update while I was in the shower (I saw the prompt) and now when I boot it's not posting it doing me bios or anything. It does power on. Since I can't even get into bios I'm not sure what to do?

    Uninstalling Visual C++ Redistributable Packages

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 05:48 PM PST

This topic has been beaten to death all over the internet, but I have a specific question that I can't find an answer for.

The popular question is: "Can I remove older C++ packages?" The answer is no because programs rely on the packages they were developed with. The program needs this specific package, newer yearly packages won't work. There are x86 and x64 versions of each package, but sometimes older versions are also installed.

My question is as follows: Is it safe to uninstall the older versions of each yearly C++ package? (leaving just the latest x86 and x64 packages for each year installed)

I've been doing this without any trouble for the past few years, but I'm looking for a definitive answer.

    Trying to remove "read-only"

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 04:17 PM PST

So I want to remove the "read-only" thing on my iTunes folder, but (obviously) the little box in Properties resets every time I close it. So I tried going through the command line, using

    attrib -r c:\program files\itunes

    except then it says

    parameter format not correct -

The weird thing is, even when I try putting a "+" instead of the "-" it says the same thing. I feel hopelessly stuck, and it's extremely frustrating. Can someone help ?

    Edit for formatting

    Making unallocated partitions contiguous

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 01:00 PM PST

So I took my old laptop's HDD out, got a case for it, and made it into an external HD for backups.

When it was still in the laptop, I had two partitions, one for Windows, one for files. Now I don't need them anymore, but can't seem to meld them together (I think) because they're no contiguous.

When I open the manager, this is what I see: https://imgur.com/5s7xgBK (the second row, named "Disk 1")

The only option when I right click on the blue partitions (named "healthy" for some reason) is "Help", so I can't remove them.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Is there a way to get "Classic Start Menu" to ignore batch files in search?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 04:13 PM PST

I finally got fed up with the piece of shit Windows 10 start menu and it's near useless search.

Classic Start Menu had tons of good reviews so I went with that, so far mostly so good. But, numerous times per day I do a "START cmd ENTER" to open a command prompt. However, with Classic Start Menu, rather than cmd.exe being the highlighted item, instead one of my batch files (killall.cmd) ends up being the highlighted item (because of the .cmd extension)

Is there a way to get it to ignore batch files, or to specify some sort of an ignore filter for searches?

And if not, what's the next best start menu replacement?

    Windows 10 as a Chromebook?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 01:21 AM PST

    Hi!

Just a quick question, I have moved from a Chromebook to a Surface Pro 4 and I am loving every second of it! My only thing I miss is the battery life of a cloud-based machine like a Chromebook.

Does anyone know of any useful apps or ways of using Windows 10 Pro in a similar way to save battery life (I don't want to use Windows 10S!!)

I need some advise on custom cursors...

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 12:02 AM PST

I'm making some custom cursors for a Windows theme I'm working on, and I need to know how many frames an animated loading cursor should have. Is there a limit, minimum, or maximum? I've looked around on the web, but most results don't return much helpful information. If it helps, I am already familiar with RealWorld Cursor Editor. Any helpful information is appreciated.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 01:06 AM PST

As title since I built a new pc with windows 10 on start up sometimes (not all the time) it boots into windows but shows black screen with just a cursor. If I press ctrl and enter my password my second screen comes on but still not main monitor. I then have to restart pc which then loads up fine. Anyone else have this issue and how to solve. I have a asus hero x motherboard with 8700k. And 1080ti. Thanks

I have Windows 10 upgraded from Win7. Want to reinstall on a new SSD drive.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 03:49 AM PST

Will the Windows Media Creation tool make a viable Win10 bootable USB/DVD? Do I need anything else to reinstall? Currently on my comp have a product ID number (visible in system properties) but nothing else.

W10 laptop stuck in a perpetual update cycle

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:15 AM PST

My computer needs to update. I use the option in the settings menu to update because there is not enough space on the device to update, and ONLY through the settings menu can you choose to use external memory during the update process.

However, the settings menu says I am up to date. Only the desktop "Windows 10 Update Assistant" pops up every hour and prompts me to update. This window does NOT have the option to use external memory, only prompting me to clean my disk.

(Yes, I have done disk cleanup and all that-- the laptop is almost entirely base install except for Firefox.)

Therefore I am stuck in a loop where the update screen keeps coming up, but I can't do anything about it because the only option that would complete the update process is not available on the one screen. And I am apparently in some twilight zone between updated and not updated.

3rd display is lower resolution then others so it can't mirror

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:04 AM PST

I have always wanted to mirror my main monitor to my old TV but it's a lower resolution so I can't really do that. Is there any way to mirror but at a different resolution so it can run properly? I have a second GPU if that is needed. My final choice would be to run a VM or something.

    HDMI/second monitor stopped working

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 03:25 AM PST

I've been using a dual monitor setup for over a year and a half. It has worked consistently since I've got it working, but recently it just up and stopped. My computer booted up to only one screen and refuses to acknowledge the fact that the other is on the same plane of existence.

I've checked the cords, used two other HDMI cords and ports, updated drivers, deleted and reinstalled drivers, rebooted the PC many, many times, checked malwarebytes, and groaned uselessly a lot. I tried to resort to resetting my pc, but even that gave me an issue, so now I resort to Reddit. Please help.

I'm using an AMD Radeon R9 200 series GPU, an AMD FX-8350 4515 Mhz processor, and I'm running Windows 10. The TV I'm trying to connect to is a Vizio D43-D2
