Posted: 25 Dec 2017 11:14 PM PST So, I've got a Western Digital Blue 5400 RPM 3TB hard drive, and a Hitachi Ultrastar 7200 RPM 3TB hard drive. I use a laptop with SSD, and wanted extra storage space. I first used this Sabrent USB 3.0 hard drive dock with the hard drives, and it seemed to work fine. But then, shortly after buying the Hitachi, I wanted a dock that could allow me to use both drives simultaneously. So I got this dual-slot dock, also by Sabrent. Problem is, neither drive shows up. Weird. I check disk management, and am greeted with this. It is like this for both 3TB drives. They do not show up as readable letter drives. The Western Digital has about 2.5 TB on it, and the Hitachi is blank. But they both appear like this. I read a tutorial online about cleaning drives, so cleaned the blank Hitachi with command prompt and formatted it using the new dual dock. Now it reads fine from the new one but shows up as this when I put it in the single-drive dock. What gives, guys? I ideally want to be able to read both drives from either dock, but I certainly am not going to clean and format my Western Digital just so I can use it in the double-dock. TL;DR: Drives/drive docks aint workin right, please help. [link] [comments] |
My friend's laptop gets better performance when the charger is unplugged Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:19 AM PST A friend of mine is having this problem with her laptop that causes it to have better gaming performance when the charger is unplugged. We've been through the power options several times, we've reinstalled and updated all drivers, and we've disabled Game DVR and tons more. I just don't understand what might cause it. Does anyone know what it could be? Specs:

Friends Macbook Kernel Panic looping Posted: 25 Dec 2017 08:50 PM PST My friends macbook is constantly kernel panic looping and we are incapable of figuring out what is causing it. It even panic loops in a safe boot. Is it a bad idea to leave a smartwatch charger and a wireless phone charger plugged in 24/7? Posted: 25 Dec 2017 12:46 PM PST I don't think anything bad would happen, but I figured I'd get a second opinion on the matter. Essentially I'm going to take a power strip and plug it into the wall, and plug my lamp, clock, wireless charger and watch charger into it. Is it bad for the chargers to be plugged in 24/7 if they're only charging for a few hours a day? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:27 AM PST Hello, I want to connect my keyboard via bluetooth with my pc. I can find it in the "Add Bluetooth Device" screen, but when i click on it to get paired, at the bottom of the window it says "Please wait..Pairing Started..." with no passkey given, while my keyboard flashes, because one might have been sent from my pc waiting to be typed. I want to ask if anyone knows a solution. My PC is up to date with updates. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
BSOD 'DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION' when I try to connect to internet via tethering Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:27 AM PST •When the problem began? I was playing Borderlands 2. I use my Android phone to tether and use internet. Been using this for many years. Since Borderlands 2 lags on Unbridged connection, I minimised Borderlands 2, went to network setts, and bridged connection. As soon as I clicked 'bridge connection', the PC froze for a while. Then it went to BSOD with DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, restarted. I disconnected my phone. PC is working. I connected my phone (didn't tether yet), it's working, as soon as I tether it again, the PC froze and BSOD with DPS_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION'. What I found out so far? Via memory dump and Blue screen View, I found out that hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe are the culprit. •What I tried so far ✓Uninstalled/reinstalled Network adapters and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager ✓Uninstalled Avast AV ✓Went to Safe with Network. What's awkward is, there was no network, i.e. I was not connected to internet. •So what can I do? Is it hardware? Software? Simply, hall.dll and ntoskrnl.exe are Culprit for bsod_watchdog_violation that causes whenever I connect to internet. I also did benchmarks and played few games offline to make sure GPU and CPU are alright. [link] [comments] |
Can't get ram to run at advertised speeds..? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:27 AM PST Relatively new pc builder here.. I put this build togeather about a month ago and today I decided to edit my ram to get the advertised 3200 MHz. This is my build. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/fzRtPs I have the most up to date bios as well as all the other latest drives for the respective parts.. my mobo is rated at 3200mhz as well as the ram but I can't get it to boot at that speed. Once I open the bios and change the to the xmp profile it shows as being set at 3200 then after I save and reset the pc tries to boot for a second and the fans/rgbs turn on then the system shuts down and repeats until it boots and asks me to revert the settings to the previous successfully startup...? I can't work this out.. I has booted at 3200 once but about 10 minutes later I got a blue screen crash so I reverted it back? P.s Iv run a memtest with no errors being reported Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Instruct PC not to use HDD Bad Blocks Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:25 AM PST I have a 2TB Smasung F4 HDD with some bad blocks at the end. Encoutered read/write errors while operating, and scanned with hdtune pro and a partition manager and confirmed there are 4-5 bad blocks on the drive. Due to its large size i still intened to use it for non-important media files which idont care about losing. Once a run a current hdtune pro scan and i get the current and up to date lba addresses of the bad blocks, how do i instruct the PC not to use those and keep the rest. This drive will then be used as part of a NAS system and formatted as ext4 P.S. I've seen some youtube videos but they seem complicated and not sure how to perform them. I can get the LBAs for sure, how do i block them out is my question [link] [comments] |

Strange CPU usage when I touch (or a little shake) server Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:19 AM PST I've got a setup on a ASUS Z10-PAU8 MB and Xeon 1620 v4 + Corsair RMx 850W + 1 HDD + 1 SSD. We noticed that, with the slightest touch (little shake the table where server temporarily lays) of the server, the CPU load is greatly increasing (99%) and sometimes its just hangs. Continuing the investigation, we tried to shake it pretty hard and the indicator "CATERR1" on the motherboard up in red and server hangs. In windows journal we have a lot of messages with "WHEA Logger - Error type: Memory controller error" when this happens. https://imgur.com/a/rJ8lf We tried another DIMM module, no luck, same problem, pins on cpu socket all looks ok. Well be glad if someone have any ideas about this behavior. (at first thought to record the video, but I think it will be silly to watch as I knock on the table) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:13 AM PST My Wife's laptop has two drives an SSD and an HDD. The HDD took a dump so I bought a cheap $50 Seagate SSHDD replacment to throw in her laptop so she didn't have to keep installing things on her 256GB SSD. The Issue I'm running into is that certain games take a really long time to launch the game. Things I've done:
I'm really at a loss as where to go. The SSHDD does have a slower RPM speed at 5400 but I don't feel like it should be so slow that it causes a timeout on diablo....My only other thought is that the Sata connection for the hard drive is damaged and is thus causing these issues....Which I hope isn't the case because I can't really repair that considering it's a laptop and there are no other sata connections on the board.... Display port no signal in Windows but works in bios Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:05 AM PST Hey, I just got an oculus for Christmas but I'm having a nightmare trying to display it on my monitor. I'm running a Vega 56 with a ryzen 1700 which means I don't have integrated graphics and I only have one HDMI port which is required for the oculus I've tried using an HDMI to display port adapter to connect the monitor to the gpu. This will deliver a signal in bios but not in Windows? I managed to use teamviewer to see if I could fix it but Radeon settings told me the resolution couldn't be changed from 640p? It does detect it as a display port signal on Radeon, just not coming up on the monitor. Any suggestions? I'm gonna try another adapter/cable but I can't afford to keep buying one till it works Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance and hope everyone had a good Christmas ! [link] [comments] |

New custom desktop keeps changing power plan settings and power plan Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:01 AM PST So I pretty much found out from the RGB light on the stock AMD cooler that my desktop will go to sleep no matter what I do. I restart the computer for whatever reason and the setting for turn monitors off and sleep will reset to defaults. Along with changing from the AMD premade power plan to balanced or power saver. I have all of the power saving options in my BIOS turned off. To what I'm aware of all of the motherboard software that has any options to save power is set to not save power and there isn't a service running on startup that changes the power settings. I wasn't able to find much of anything when I did a Google search besides this being a common problem for multiple versions of Windows. Android phone constantly "charging" after being unplugged Posted: 26 Dec 2017 12:19 AM PST My phone turns on normal nothing seemingly wrong. I plug it in to charge and when I take it off the charger it still thinks its charging which is causing a higher power state which is really eating up my battery life. I have tried to replicate this with by plugging in a charger not connected to any power and the physical action is not triggering anything, but the second I connect the cable to a computer and unplug it the phone has already entered the perpetual charging state. Thunderbolt 3 enclosure and XPS 15 with 7700HQ vs building a pc? Posted: 25 Dec 2017 05:23 PM PST My XPS 15 laptop has 7700hq, 1050 4gb, 32gb ddr4, 1tb ssd. I spent a lot of money on it. I've been playing pubg and a few other games with friends and have been needing a little more power to play games for quite a while now. Is it worth buying a tb3 enclosure like this oneShould I get a tb3 enclosure like this one http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_1200_557_559&item_id=111490? Will two lane pcie to the tb3 port on my laptop bottleneck the card? What will the performance difference be? Is it more worth spending over twice money to build a pc with a 1070? What would the performance difference be between a 1070 straight on the motherboard vs an enclosure connected to my laptop through tb3 with 2 lanes pcie? [link] [comments] |

How can I get permission to access a folder on a hard drive from an old laptop? Posted: 26 Dec 2017 03:49 AM PST I have a new laptop and an old laptop. Just before switching from one to the other (and moving my data) it would appear that Win10 has corrupted on the old hard drive. I have put the hard drive into an enclosure and connected to new laptop via USB. This is seen as drive E:/ on the new laptop. I want to access/copy the files in E:\users\silverben10 onto the HDD of the new laptop. However, when I try to access this folder I am told I do not have permission. When I try what Windows suggests to gain these permissions I am given the error message "Can't open access control editor. Unable to perform a security operation on an object that has no associated security". How can I overcome this problem to successfully access the folder? [link] [comments] |
Can a faulty PSU cause heat on the CPU? Posted: 25 Dec 2017 06:40 PM PST Recently my cpu overheats when using it above 40-70 percent. I googled some fixes and so far what I have done is; clean the computer, new termal paste, software/virus removal, and place fan near it my computer. I just saw a post from a guy claming that he solve his overheating problems by replacing his faulty power supply. Can this be a valid solution? [link] [comments] |
Replaced motherboard without clean install of windows Posted: 26 Dec 2017 02:14 AM PST I did not clean install windows after I put in a new cpu, ram, and mobo. I did this because 2 friends told me their PCs had no issues after doing so I thought it would be fine, but after doing this, I seem to have weird lag or ping spikes that cause a drop in frames also. My guess would be that it is due to not having the correct drivers for my motherboard. I have already installed ethernet drivers, but that did not fix the issue. I got to installing the chipset drivers, but the set up menu seemed rather intimidating. My question is that should I just install all those drivers and see if it works or should I do a clean install? Thanks for any help. My mobo is the MSI z720-a pro if it matters. [link] [comments] |
