    Laptops To wait or not?

    Laptops To wait or not?

    To wait or not?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 08:56 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: £850, UK

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for money.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Ideally, thin and light but I can compromise on these if required

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" - 15.6"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Light gaming. Think Papers Please or indie games found on Steam. Occasional Sims and a few other older games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and reliable build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have fallen in love with the Asus Zenbook UX430UQ (7th gen) but realise it might not be the best value for money given this HP laptop I came across with the 8th generation processors: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-14-bf153sa-14-laptop-silver-10169120-pdt.html and the https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-720s-14-laptop-silver-10164472-pdt.html

Should I take the plunge and get the HP or wait for the Ideapad/other 8th generation laptops to be released into the UK market? Seems like there aren't many of them yet...

My current laptop is slowing down. Should I buy a new one or just upgrade from an HDD to an SSD?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 11:08 AM PST

I currently have an ASUS K55VD Series Laptop, which (in my opinion), can still hold its own against much more powerful laptops of today. It has an I7-3610QM CPU, 8GB of DDR3 1600MHz ram, and a [Hitachi HTS547575A9E384 750GB, 5400 RPM Hard Drive].

    1. Do you think my laptop is an old equipment right now, and I should buy a new one? Or...
    2. Buy a new storage, preferably an SSD?

Problem: My laptop now take its time opening programs that shouldn't be hard to open (MS Office Apps, Chrome, Avast/Malwarebyes), it takes up to 20 secs tops to simply open an app/program, which I think isn't normal anymore. Is SSD an actual solution to my problem?

I've read a lot about upgrading from an HDD to an SSD can make your laptop in near-pristine condition again. What do you guys think?

Having wifi issues with my new laptop

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 01:46 PM PST

Just started using my Acer Nitro 5 from Costco. Ran the speedtest on both my desktop and this laptop.

The desktop clocked results of: 32 ping, 116 mbps download and 10 mpbs upload

The laptop clocked results of: 166 ping, 9.8 mbps download and 3.19 mbps upload

From what I understand laptops generally have a slightly slower connectivity but this doesn't seem normal at all considering this laptop has AC wifi. Not sure what to try next to fix this issue. Thoughts?

I'm installing a new drive today, but I'm not sure how to structure my OS.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 01:30 PM PST

I finally decided to upgrade my laptop and install an M.2 SSD alongside my stock HDD. I was just going to install Windows 10 on the new drive and use the HDD as a data drive.

Only except I don't know how that would work. My main drive (C:) has the folder "Program Files" alongside the folder "Windows". Do these 2 need to be in the same drive to work together? Same goes for other internal system folders. How would I go about restructuring everything?

    Any help is gratefully appreciated.

    Help!! Need laptop advice

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 12:29 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade my laptop this Christmas season. I have $1200 to spend, and would ultimately use it to play games and browse the internet. I would plan on using the oculus rift gaming system with it.

Any advice would help. So far I'm considering the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 line or a Lenovo Thinkpad Y line.

    Lenovo y50-70 UPGRADE HELP

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 10:27 AM PST

Hello, I have a problem with my laptop which shutters when playing some higher demand games. I have tried buying cooling pad but that didn't help so I thought maybe if I upgraded my laptop's parts shuttering could be solved. ATM I have 960m, 8Gb RAM, I5-4210H and 1TB HDD +8Gb SSD. I think I can't upgrade GPU and CPU but maybe that is still possible somehow? Also how do I know which RAM and SSD to buy if I wanted to upgrade?

[EDIT] I just realised that if I wanted to upgrade to 16 RAM and 500GB SSD then I would need about 300 euros. So it's better to sell my old laptop and buy new one instead of upgrading.

Need a daily use laptop that can run Rocket league at a high level without framerate lag or anything.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 09:57 AM PST

I've been leaning towards HP currently. I don't know all that much about what it would take to run games at a high level on a laptop. my budget is about $500-$700. I'd assume I'd need a dedicated graphics card to really make a good laptop that can game as well but any laptop I've seen with that is pretty expensive.

    Thanks in advance!

Owners of HP Spectre x360 (2017): your opinions ?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 09:28 AM PST

To those who have this laptop already: how is it ? Best (computer) purchase ever ? Or are there flaws that caused you to return it ?

Basically, I would just love to hear your thoughts on the laptop and how well (or poorly) it worked for you. I know there are dozens of forums for this laptop already but they're mostly in comparison to another computer so they never go quite into depth.

Also, would love if it an artist (or anyone really) would tell me if the surface can replace a typical drawing tablet ? Art is a hobby of mine as well as a small source of income so would love to invest in something that will last as long as (and maybe replace) my drawing tablet.

    Thank you !

Acer aspire es 17 or Es 15?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 06:18 AM PST

Price difference is fairly a "lot", that's what makes me so confused and so i reached this sub.

The cheaper one (Es 17) seems just as good (if not better?) as the Es 15

    Es 15 is 500 euro

Es 17 is 370 euro (came from 400)

I did a comparison and to my (though don't trust on me) knowledge they both have their ups and flaws which makes them as equally good for my standards.

I just sold my macbook pro mid 2012, 13 inch so for me 17 inch or 15 inch doesn't make it at all. I'm glad anyways they're both bigger than 13 inch. But what's with the screen? I don't travel or study with my laptop. I usually just browse, watch series, youtube or movies. Maybe i'll take advantage of the fact i finally can play windows games such as oldschool rollercoaster

HD+ or full HD for me? i mean i really don't pay detail to the screen.. but is the difference noticable?

    resolution Es 15: 1920 x 1080

    resolution Es 17: 1600 x 900, but bigger screen

i don't know any shit about specs.

I just want a laptop i can enjoy for several years without the risk it slows down a lot or dealing with complications on long term.

couple days ago the hard disk of my macbook gave up. Can happen after some years(?) but several reasons made me want to change to windows.

    1: price/quality

    2: windows

    3: quality in general

Does anyone know about these specific two laptops?

Fun fact btw, i'm currently working with an acer aspire 5738 (2009) and it for it's age it works magically good, but then i again i don't know much about laptops and specs lol

Also other suggestions are welcome as long it's between the price of 360 and 500 (euro) i don't care about the brand

How long are laptops generally released after being announced?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 07:22 PM PST

I'm hoping for an XPS 13 9370 announcement at CES 2018. How long after laptops are announced do they generally get released? Could I aim to get it by mid February/early March (when the exam period starts)

is the 2017 HP Spectre x350 "15 any good?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 01:49 AM PST

I'm in love with the Spectre x360 15 but I've been reading a lot of bad QC issues such as coil whine, display, trackpad, keyboard issues - but I guess its because no one goes to a forum and says "my laptop got no problems"

So owners of the Spectre, how many of you got problems and did not? What are the chances that I'll get a bad unit if I bought one? Do you experience any discomfort (e.g. heat issues, bad keyboard, bluetooth, etc)

Also, will the 2017 Spectre x360 15 handle Adobe Premiere well? (for video editing with heavy effects), how about the 2017 13 inch version?

I am also considering the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro and Lenovo Yoga 920 but I'm not sure if they would be great with Premiere and other tasks since they don't have a decent GPU. I would take the Surface Book 2 anytime, but too costly.

Community help picking out the perfect laptop for me?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 09:54 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm a college student studying Geography/Geology and am in the market for a new laptop this post Christmas season. Budget is $1,000... a little higher is fine and lower is ideal. But I've been stuck with fap-top crap-tops my whole life and I'm on my own budget now so it's time to get something for myself that'll last awhile. Alas, I know nothing about computers and trying to read reviews on the internet and laptop descriptions is, to say the least, impossible. So I'm coming to this community! I'd really like an Asus, but I could settle for an HP or anything that isn't a Dell (bad experience ). I just need it for word, research, some GIS programs and photoshop programs, and I also enjoy steam games but I don't need a high grade laptop for that. I play games like Civ V, OG BF2, KOTOR, SWTOR, and it needs to run Mount and Blade: Bannerlord because I'm gonna put some serious hours into that. I don't need to game on 4K graphics and I don't need to run graphic intensive games. Every laptop I see says it's not good for gaming but these people play Battlefield 1 on 4K graphics and I don't need that. So...... what's your thoughts on a perfect laptop (or close enough to) in my budget and can run what I'm looking for?

Again, I know nothing about computers so please don't be rude in the comments :)

    Built in vs. USB webcam.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:16 PM PST

I'm considering buying a USB webcam to use instead of my built in 720p webcam.

My question is, say both webcams are 720p in Skype or a similar application, will there be more work load on my system resources with a USB webcam?

I take vocal lessons online every week via Skype. I also record these sessions with OBS. My laptop is not the greatest but not the worst. With my current setup, using a USB audio interface with a condenser mic instead of my built in mic, I'm having no issues. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite S75Dt-A7330 CPU: AMD A10-Series A10-5750M (2.50 GHz) Ram: 12 GB
    120GB SSD

Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre x360

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 08:29 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm looking for a new laptop and have been looking at both the QHD+ XPS and the 4K Spectre, both with the i5-8250U. I can get them for roughly the same price so does anyone have an opinion on which to get?

    [2018] XPS 13 - 9370

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:37 PM PST

    Hi,

Note: Sorry About The Weird Capitalisation, Something Broke In Reddit That Caused This.

Does Anyone Have Any Idea When The XPS 13 9370 Is Going To Drop? I'm Got My Eyes Set On Getting A New Laptop Before School Starts (1 FEB 18), And I've Had My Eyes Set On The XPS 13 For Quite A While.

I've Heard That There Might Be An Announcement In January 2018 About A Potentially New Release At CES 2018, Indeed There Appears To Be An Article On Laptopmag About It (Https://Www.Laptopmag.Com/Articles/New-Dell-Xps-13-2018-First-Look).

Could Anyone Please Confirm That This Is Indeed The Case, And That I Should Hold Off Buying An XPS 13 For A Few Months, Just So I That I Get Can Get The Latest Version? I'm Hoping To Get A Laptop That Can Last For At Least 5 Years Of University, So I Want To Start (Ideally) With The Best Model Possible.

    Thanks For The Help!

    XPS 13 8th Gen i7

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:26 PM PST

    Hi,

So this laptop has a beast processor, but can it utilise it to its fullest potential without overheating/causing other problems? Also, since it has a quite frankly average graphics card, wouldn't that hinder the amazing processor's ability to achieve its full potential?

    thx

Should I get the GTX 1050 or 1050 ti? Plus some other questions

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:21 PM PST

I have to mention that I already have a primary desktop PC with a gtx 1080 for use at home, this laptop will be used mainly for University(Programming), light gaming(e.g. pubg/lol) and movie watching, while travelling.

    I have two choices:

    Laptop 1($1330):

    • 15.6" 1080p IPS WVA Matte 60Hz -

    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 -

    • Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor -

    • 16GB DDR4 2400MHZ Memory -

    • Samsung EVO 960 250gb M.2 SSD -

    • NO HDD -

    Laptop 2 ($1431):

    • 15.6" 1080p IPS WVA Matte 60Hz -

    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 -

    • Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor -

    • 8GB DDR4 2400MHZ Memory -

    • Samsung EVO 960 250gb M.2 SSD -

    • NO HDD -

Laptop 1 has 16gb ram vs 8gb ram in Laptop 2

Laptop 2 has a GTX 1050 TI vs gtx 1050 in Laptop 1

Laptop 1 costs $100 less than Laptop 2

Which laptop would be a better buy?

Is the GTX 1050TI worth the $100 extra and 8gb less ram?

Or am I better off with an extra 8gb ram, $100 off, but less graphic power?

One last question, is the Samsung EVO 960 worth it over a cheaper M.2 or sata 3 SSD? I'm using this mainly for Uni/study and light gaming while travelling, so I don't mind if it's 10 milliseconds slower or anything.

    Thanks
