Sunday Rant/Rage (Dec 24 2017) - Your weekly complaint thread! Posted: 24 Dec 2017 03:10 AM PST Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions. This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:
Rules 1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer. 2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars. 3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on. [link] [comments]

Shuttle v2.0 has been released to the Play Store Posted: 24 Dec 2017 05:06 PM PST Hey /r/Android It's been a while.. I've been working away at Shuttle, and I've made a ton of improvements. A lot of changes have taken place behind the scenes, to improve the performance of the app, reduce crashes and make Shuttle easier to add to and maintain. For those who don't know it, Shuttle is a local music player for Android. You have to copy songs to your device in order for them to show up in the app. This doesn't really compete well with Spotify and Play Music and other cloud services, but it's a great music player if you're happy to store your music locally. Shuttle now themes itself dynamically based on your artwork, which is downloaded automatically from Last.fm and iTunes. There's loads of customisation. I like to think it has a modern interface and it's intuitive to use. The paid version features tag editing, chromecast support as well as a few other minor features. Shuttle was my first programming project, and I used it to learn java and Android. I'm now a professional Android and iOS developer, and I'm starting to learn backend development as well. /r/Android has been behind me for the entire journey and I really appreciate your support. So, merry christmas and enjoy the update! Changelog: 2.0.0 Features:
UI changes:
Code improvements:
Bug fixes:

Posted: 24 Dec 2017 05:47 PM PST I was using my friend's iPhone the other day, and this function is a lot more useful than I thought when I heard about it. The screen temperature/colour adjusts based on the temperature/colour of ambient light around you, and it makes the screen a lot more comfortable to look at. I think it's a lot more useful than night mode, since it's in effect all the time and responds to the phone moving from different light sources, like outdoor sunlight to inside lightbulb light. I could see this feature being adopted by a lot of manufacturers in the future. [link] [comments]
Why is android looked down upon by the younger generation? Posted: 24 Dec 2017 02:31 PM PST I'm a 20 year old college student who just bought a Note 8, one of the most expensive and arguably one of the best smartphones to buy currently. When one of my friends saw my note 8 she looked at it in DISGUST. She told me that I was going to regret getting rid of my iPhone. While I took a Snapchat photo of one of my friends yesterday (Snapchat btw looks really good on my note 8) he said "you don't have an iPhone what are you poor?" I don't get it. I have a $950 dollar smartphone and he had the nerve to say I was poor. Why is android looked at so shitty by the younger generation. It can do everything an iPhone can do and more. Posted: 24 Dec 2017 07:22 PM PST I've been trying out RSS reader services for the past month, and it feels so liberating when I get to curate my own news. Now I kind of get why Google shut down Reader. They wanted to push their horrible news algorithm to everyone. What's frustrating is that they've had so many years to work on it but it's still shit until now. I'm looking at you Google Feed. [link] [comments]

Finally got my whole family on Android: anything cool we can do? Posted: 24 Dec 2017 01:55 PM PST Been used to everyone I know having iPhones. Starting tomorrow morning, my mom dad and brother will all have Android phones as well. Is there anything cool we've been missing out on like iMessage? [link] [comments]
Lets discuss your ideas of new android features Posted: 24 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST Android is awesome. Let's share each other about your ideas that you wish to have on newer android releases.let me start it up. 3rd party apps is allowed to create their own quick setting tiles. for eg a voice record can be started directly from the quick settings panel instead of going to the app. Network types should be able to lock.eg. 4G only,3G only etc.... Posted: 24 Dec 2017 08:36 AM PST For the past year or two, we've been seeing two trends in messaging: RCS and end-to-end encryption. The problem is, no app currently combines both. But the thing is, Google has the tools to lead this trend with Android Messages. Why should they, you ask? Google wants Android Messages to be able to compete with iMessage, right? Sure, RCS is built into Android Messages, but RCS, SMS, and MMS all are incapable of end-to-end encryption. Now, iMessage has end-to-end encryption, which is huge. This means that consumer data is FAR more secure. To be able to compete with this security, Google needs to incorporate end-to-end encryption in Android Messages. To achieve that, Google will also need to incorporate data-based texting into Android Messages. I understand there may be some issues with my statement. What incentive would carriers have to adopt RCS? Well for one, much like MMS and SMS, RCS would enable messaging where LTE or 3G wouldn't reach or where the signal is bad or bad enough to not send data-based end-to-end encrypted messages, much like what is already occuring with SMS and MMS. If Google keeps their Android messages data-based texting features consistent with RCS messaging features (except encryption of course), this could provide seamless transitions to areas where data is not available or the connection is not up to par (which, as we all know, it is not always, even on Verizon in supposedly well-covered areas). It seems as though cybersecurity is getting far more important day by day. We're seeing these massive attacks now and increasing amounts of malware, ransomware, breaches, etc. Not only that, but now we have the option of sending money through Android Messages using Google wallet. Money! SMS and MMS are NOT the safest ways to do money transfer. If Google wants their messenger to compete with iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram, and be truly safe, they MUST incorporate end-to-end encryption using data, Google already had the time available for them to do this. Perhaps their key to do this is Open Whisper Systems' Signal Protocol, which is open source anyway and which WhatsApp has already adopted. Once Google does this with their own app, perhaps Android devs will apply this combination to their app as well, making messaging on Android safer, yet more convent and advanced at the same time. I want to hear your thoughts. How would you feel if Google introduced this combo into Android Messages? Comment below! [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Dec 2017 04:54 AM PST Since the last week, many people started to see this message "To view this content install and set up a web browsing app" - https://i.imgur.com/nfiXqhL.png This issue is happening when somebody is clicking on the link like "https://play.google.com/apps/testing/..." on his mobile device. Google Play has a mechanism to OPT-IN to the beta/alpha release channel for some Android apps which is done via these links. Looks like it happens because Google Play now intercepts all BROWSE Android intents to URL with play.google.com domain. I have this issue on both Android 6.0.1 and Android 8.1.0 devices. It was spotted when Instagram released an Alpha release channel and some people were complaining in comments to this Android Police article. http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/12/19/instagram-opened-alpha-program-android-app-heres-can-enroll/ HOW TO FIX
Looks like they just forgot about OPT-INs. Do you think they will deprecate this mechanism? Hope it helps someone. Happy Testing! [link] [comments]

Huawei Mate 10 Pro - the future Posted: 24 Dec 2017 12:54 AM PST Sooooo chaps, i have just sunk my cash on a new one of these. My thinking is that it looks like an interesting phone with great spec and is waterproof. My first waterproof phone! the camera has some interesting features and the phone translates which would be remarkable help on my adventures. Lets talk EMUI, that is the desktop aspect of the Huawei skin for the mate series. This allows a type C to HDMI cable to transform the mate 10 pro into a desktop that can be controlled by mouse/keyboard. Now the next phone i grab (next year) needs to have this feature working full blast, that s to say most likely it will need to be a samsung (DeX) unit. Despite needing a £150 dock they appear to have really gotten this system working in a useful format as a linux desktop that can run android apps. Nearly perfect! So how do you see this panning out for EMUI? It is apparent that enriching DeX didn't fall onto Samsungs lap - it required plenty of research and graft. Do you think Huawei will invest quite as much effort in getting their desktop service working well? Currently and annoyingly the only reports on the web refuse to try and do anything that tests the capabilities of the unit, preffering to talk about the obvious and well known features of the phone (no dock required, keyboard/mouse working on phone, some apps optimised etc). So yes, where is this rambling nonsense going you might ask? And that is indeed the question i too am asking. But not in relation to my own text, instead about the Huawei phone. Are Huawei a company that tends to invest in things like samsung seem to? As a company do you forsee them actually working to catchup with samsung - making this a linux desktop with PC like feature set? Any thoughts welcome. Out. [link] [comments] |
