Network Drops All Traffic Every 12 Minutes

My network is experiencing complete packet loss on all devices every 12 minutes. The loss happens for ~5 seconds. I suspect the issue has happened for sometime and I began to notice it with our new work VPN not performing well with these packet losses, and completely force-kicks me off the VPN. This made me begin investigating the issue.

I first switched out the router (Amplifi Instant), but same issue. Then I went hardwired and same issue. Not sure the next step, any suggestions?

The attached pictures are from PingPlotter. They show a complete packet loss occurring at hop 2 and this continuing through all subsequent hops. This occurs every 12 minutes. My suspect is next modem (using Xfinity) or then hardware outside my house. Any thoughts?

Packet loss. Time is estimated based on the PingPlotter graph but within the minute standard error.

How do you decide when it's time for a new router? I think I need to replace mine

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:51 PM PDT

I have a Netgear R6700v3 I picked up in 2019 for a medium sized home. It's been capable. Never had overheating problems or slowdowns, and handles gigabit. There is a peculiar issue that Netgear never addressed: new firmware past version 1.0.3.66 cuts bandwidth by 33%.

I test 980/980 Mbps from the ONT, but with the router on the newest firmware it limits to 600 Mbps. The only variable changed is the firmware. Besides this bug, the router works like a dream. It only has 802.11ac though, and I'm not sure if there are security flaws with the old firmware I use.

If I can find a beefier router with much better range and coverage that would be ideal. It's a high bandwidth household, big file downloads and multiple 4K streams, and smart stuff. Will Wi-Fi 6E make a significant difference in the slow spots in the house, and handling multiple users downloading? Looking for better latency over Wi-Fi too.

I would really just like a much stronger main router to cover the whole house in great speeds. Not looking to invest in Orbi/Nest right now. Thanks for your advice.

    Unifi AP Home Ceiling Mount

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:52 AM PDT

I have a Unifi AP (U6 Pro) that I have in my kitchen. It is in the cabinet above the fridge. Works fine, but would work better if it was actually ceiling mounting not inside of a cabinet. How can I run an ethernet line from that cabinet to a ceiling mount? This in a two story house, so going into the attic isn't an option. Thanks.

    Wi-Fi 5 4x4 vs Wi-Fi 6 2x2

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:26 PM PDT

Hi there, I was looking into buying an access point and narrowed everything down to 2 models - a Wi-Fi 5 device with 4x4 antennas, and a Wi-Fi 6 device with 2x2 antennas - which costs 30$ less. I plan to purchase 2-3 of these devices (of the same model).

My plan is to have only 4 Wi-Fi devices (only smartphones) - all of my computers, streamers and other devices will use a wired connection by the time I finish wiring up my house with Ethernet sockets.

3 of the smartphones support Wi-Fi 6 and have 2x2 antennas, and the other one is Wi-Fi 5 only.

What would bring a stronger and more stable connection - the 4x4 antennas, or the Wi-Fi 6 capabillities? Everyone on this forum seems to think differently than each other and I can't reach any sort of consensus on the matter...

Do you think that the investment on Wi-Fi 5 transmitters would be a deal breaker in later years, when Wi-Fi 6 adoption would get even better? I don't want to get stuck with antiquated equipment but also wouldn't want to gimp my setup in the short term...

Where can I buy those in-wall networking panels?

Where can I buy those in-wall networking panels?

Similar to images like this, I want to install my networking in a coat closet, or possibly the garage. I have no idea what to search for, however, to find this product online / in stores.

I am a homeowner who is planning to run ethernet to most rooms, and this is definitely preferred to a 3" conduit coming out of the ceiling and various devices sitting on a shelf.

    Notes that may be tangential:

    • It's a single-story on-slab house, so no basement. That would make this process much easier.
    • Cable modem, (SB8200), and have a Ubiquiti AP arriving shortly. Still looking for the right router/switch, but will probably go with the EdgeRouter 10X, but am not attached to Ubiquti's equipment, and def don't want rackmount size stuff like their UDMPro. Happy to take suggestions on small router/switch combos with minimum 8 ports, as a single device is preferred to a separate router + switch.

    Improve range on Asus RT-AC67P

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:13 PM PDT

    Hello!

I went from an Asus RT- ACRH13 to an Asus RT-AC67P. I thought it would be a pretty good upgrade and while speed wise it has, range wise has been a major disappointment. I used to be able to go to my backyard or front porch and easily had signal with my old one, but with this new one it either comes and goes or theres no signal at all. Any one have any tips? I tried changing the channel(tried 6 and 8, default was 11) on it but it hasnt helped much.

    Thanks!

    AT&T fiber wifi issues.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:54 PM PDT

I've had the 1Gbps fiber for 6-8 months or so. No problems. I have the BGW210 and two of the Airties 4920 in my house. The airties are both wired backhaul.

On my desktop I get a solid 920+ download and almost that fast upload. On my phone I typically get from 200 - 400Mbps throughout the house.

Now today, my wifi is dropping out pretty bad but I have only noticed it on one of the airties. I have power cycled the BGW210 and the one airties. No change.

But it's so sporadic I don't know what else to do. Just did a test now and it was 333 down and 330 up.

But in a few minutes it could be 10-15 down.

The airties has an ip address but logging in doesn't seem to offer much configuration as far as I can see.

I know there are better mesh systems but this worked great at my house for a year (then I switched providers). Switched back to ATT late last year and set them up and they have been great since then.

    Rebuilding network...need WiFi 6 recommendations

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:27 PM PDT

    Current setup: 1700sqft WiFi mesh

    Future setup: Pfsense Wifi6 router

Multiple wifi6 capable devices streaming and/or gaming. My priority is the pfsense though. I would like to segment the network with vlans, implement pfblockerng, VPN, firewall rules, etc... and just manage my network better.

Searching for recommendations here only leads to more confusion.

    Any recommendations?

    MC220L not working with fiber

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:26 PM PDT

    Hello everyone

I've recently moved back into my home and one of the first things I did is set up my network. When connecting my router to the wall fiber port with my MC220L media converter, I've noticed that the FX LED doesn't turn on. Fiver connection works with the ISP supplied router. I've also used the ISP supplied SFP module to no avail.

My connection is a 10 Gb connection.

I am now wondering if I am doing something completely wrong or if my media concerters SFP port just broke.

What is also weird is that the cable and the sfp module from my ISP are more wider, almost square like.

Has anybody had a similiar problem or know what is to do?

    Thank you very much

Help with Linksys Ac1900 ext network saying incorrect password

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:14 PM PDT

I got an AC1900 wifi extender, successfully set it up but i had to use web based browser setup as opposed to wps setup. I set the password to the bare minimum 8 characters. But when i try to log into the ext network, it doesn't connect, saying "password maybe be incorrect". The light on the extender is solid green. Any advice?

    Moca Setup - Wi3 BridgeStream

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 03:06 PM PDT

    Hello all -

I just ordered a set of these in-wall Moca adapters to set up in my condo. The condo is not wired for Ethernet but has a coax outlet in almost every room so figured moca would be a viable option:

    Here

My main coax line into the unit comes in through the laundry room where it splits off 4 other rooms.

Currently, my set up looks much like this diagram they sent to me:

    Setup

My modem is a Arris SB8200 Docsis 3.1 and I have Tp-link decos as my router/mesh system. My ISP is RCN.

I have also replaced a few of the old downstream splitters with these

I am having trouble getting the adapters to establish a connection and was wondering if anyone was familiar with these types of adapters or has had experience with them?

    networking gurus please help

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:47 PM PDT

so here is the scenario. I want to use the windows network drive sharing thing

2 pcs in one room, both are connected to the main house router, but i don't particularly want to share on this network, even if its password protected.

so is it possible to somehow with a 2nd ethernet cable from pc 1 to pc 2 to create a network ONLY between these 2 pcs for the use of network drive sharing

TL;DR i only want to share to a specific network, that is between these two pcs, and not the network that is the router

Is it better or worse to put an ASUS RT-AC66U router between the ISP provided modem (which is also a router) and the rest of the network, instead of just ditching it?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 09:50 AM PDT

When the ISP provider replaced our 10 year old modem (that had no router capabilities) and gave us a new one made by Compal Broadband Networks (that had them), instead of ditching the ASUS router and using the modem in it's place (which at the first glance seems to have the same specs: 4 LAN ports 5 Ghz WiFi capability and more) they just replaced the modem plugged one of it's LAN ports into the WAN port of the ASUS router, leaving 3 LAN ports empty on it and filling all 4 LAN ports on the ASUS router with cables going to the different computers in the house.

Wouldn't this extra layer of hardware introduce some additional latency and slowness to the network? I personally find it a bit slow, but that might be because of other things.

Or are these ISP provided modem-routers significantly worse with something than the ones that one buys from a retailer?

I apologize if I've phrased my post unclearly. I am not a big networking expert and might have confused some terms. Please correct me if that's the case.

    TP-Link EAP660 HD AX3600 + Extending WiFi coverage

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:20 PM PDT

I was thinking about going down the route of TP-Link's Omada or Ubiquiti's system but I just want to extend Wifi setup, however, couldn't I just add a TP-Link EAP660 HD AX3600 to my existing network and extend Wifi coverage?

I would plug the TP-Link EAP660 HD AX3600 into my current WiFI router, run an ethernet cable with a POE injector and have that as the upstairs WiFi.

Does that make sense? I know devices wouldn't seamlessly go behind devices.

    Hello!

Recently, My family got a firestick and have used that for the TV, but whenever I play games while they watch TV, I run into packet loss issues. I am trying to troubleshoot the issue and am willing to pay for a better internet connection, but cannot figure out what the problem is. I have a FIOS quantum gateway and an EERO mesh system.

Help with a semi-rual wifi problem

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:42 AM PDT

Hi there! Hoping I can get some smart people to guide me!

Moved outside of the city. No hard wire available. Sat only. Got a Visat satellite.

You only get so much and them you are throttled. I can't even enjoy a good Sunday Netflix binge 😩.

I added a Mifi hotspot to try supplement. It ain't cheap. I get one bar and it throttles me after a certain level. (Unlimited is actually not unlimited.)

Peak hours after 6, to 11-12am are slow.

    Losing my mind!

In addition to this, I building soundproof walls. Which the mass will be a b$tch to get bars or Sat.

    1. I thought of Mifi extender, gets attached to the actual piece. If it helps much, not sure.

The other was WeBoost for cell tower and that would hopefully allow better Mifi hotspot and even cell coverage. It is rough.

    BUT IS NOT CHEAP.

    1. I know ZERO about Satellites. Got on waiting list for Musk's Starlink.

Any brains more versed than mine, please help a girl out!

Need some help troubleshooting hardwired speeds

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:15 AM PDT

Hey all. I have a Netgear cablemodem which is wired into an Amplifi Alien wifi router. From there it outputs a Netgear unmanaged 16 port 1gbs switch. THAT switch is wired to another switch at a different location of the house where more devices all plug into that second 1gb unmanaged switch. I have two devices that seem to NOT support 1Gbs speeds and if they are plugged in, it takes the WHOLE switch down to 100mbps. Any thoughts on this? What am I doing wrong here?
