ASUS ROG Zyphrus G15???? What laptops should I consider?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:29 PM PDT

Ive been looking into a new laptop and this ASUS has kinda caught my attention, I don't think I would game at all on it though. I like the few more ports, I use USB-A usually, and the non full keyboard. Using an ASUS Zenbook right now and I don't mind it aside form the battery not being too great after a couple of years, and the screen if I'm sitting near a window/outside has gotta be turned up pretty bright. I have it hooked to a monitor nearly all the time, but for the next while I'll be using it more on my lap, moving it around etc..

Can anyone speak on how the battery is? multiple tabs/browsers open, VS usually, and maybe some streaming/music. Also if it gets pretty hot/loud? Getting more into the tech side of things due to life happenings, so looking for a solid laptop that I wont need to replace in a few years. I have an Old Lenovo Thinkpad P580 that's lasted nearly 10 years now (use it for youtube/twitch on my tv), battery is horrible now, had to replace some keys and add an SSD, screen looks meh, its pretty beat up/slow and can't run much. But the fact it has lasted that long had me looking at Lenovo's but nothing is very appealing (bought a refurbished x1 carbon gen 3 a few years ago and sold it pretty quickly).

There seems to be some mixed reviews about the G15, I'm open to other brands as well, just after a while of researching this is what has stood out to me.

    Some things I'm looking for:

    15" display

Atleast 16gb of ram (32 would be nice)

Don't want a full sized keyboard, would like it to be back lit

HDMI/USB A ports - going to buy a dock eventually, so if somethings right without those I'd still consider

    Good battery life

    Any suggestions?!

I am having trouble removing these two final screws on my acer laptop. the rest of them were easy, but there is two that are deeper. my screwdriver just doesn't fit so I tried a skinnier one, but I just can't get enough torque to spin it also the skinnier one with the larger head just broke off.

A good laptop arm for hp omen 30l laptop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 02:21 PM PDT

Hello, I am looking for a laptop arm that can fit a pretty big laptop. I have been looking on Amazon but most of the laptop arms seem a little flimsy. If anybody knows a good laptop arm under 50 dollars that would be great to hear

"Instant wake/resume": to what extent is the hardware determining this speed versus the operating software?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:11 PM PDT

I do have some anecdotal "proof" it must be mostly and primarily hardware driven but I am curious if anyone knows more on this subject. What makes this work exactly from a technical perpective?

While its maybe a seemingly minor thing to most, for my impatient self this feature has come to be a main and super important part of my user experience. You do not realize how important it is until its gone (which happened to me recently on a brand new laptop purchase)

    Is Eluktronics a good brand?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:33 PM PDT

I found a laptop with amazing specs for the price, but it is from this brand. It seems that it is a small gaming laptop brand and I seen come posts talking very well of them. But they really are a good brand, anyone here have any experiences with them?

    Flex screen wear and tear

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 12:00 PM PDT

My girlfriend has a laptop, that can turn all the way back to become a tablet, but she's worried that turning it back and forth too much will break it.

We're thinking they should be built to last that, but I can imagine it does wear down over time. So how safe is it to turn it back and forth from "normal laptop" to tablet?

If it's of any importance, it's an HP Pavilion X360

    Laptop monitor replacement/upgrade?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 11:48 AM PDT

So I scratched my laptop's screen pretty badly, and I was looking for a replacement, and it got me thinking if I could "upgrade" the monitor. I checked the Hardware ID and it's a BOE07F1:
    https://www.panelook.com/NT156FHM-N62_BOE_15.6_LCM_overview_41052.html
I believe this is a TN screen. And I found a site offering a IPS replacement:
    https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/M509DA/
Is this legit? Are there any better options?

Deciding if to downgrade from a 14" MacBook Pro to a 2016 15" MacBook Pro. I realized I mostly use it for Netflix and light photo editing so it seems an overkill. How long you think the 2016 laptop would be eligible for MacOS updates?

Why aren't there laptops with standard keyboards anymore?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 08:12 AM PDT

I'm from Portugal where keyboards are based on the UK layout with the tall Enter key and the small left Shift with an extra key.

But now most laptops seem to have an American style bar Enter key, even when they seem to be prepared to have a big Enter key, like this one. Why?!

I had a laptop like this and it was driving me crazy as I was always pressing the wrong key because I'm used to press the Enter key using my pinky finger right below the Shift key, where there is a different key on that layout. I couldn't get used to it because my desktop has a regular keyboard and I was always changing from one to the other.

There are still some laptops with the regular Enter key, but then there's another issue: they don't have dedicated Home/End keys!

I'm a programmer and I use these keys a lot. When I need to move the cursor to the end or beginning of a line, or when I want to select all text up to the end of the line I just use Shift+End. And while I could get used to do Shift+Fn+Right Arrow, it messes my muscular memory every time I change keyboards.

Why are laptop makers messing up with the keyboards? I understand sometimes they have to move things around due to space restriction, but I've seen keyboards with dedicated media keys and no dedicated Home/End keys! Even laptops with the full numeric keypad don't have the dedicated Home/End keys anymore.

And the bar Enter key, I would understand it's easier to make a single layout and just change the key caps, but a lot of laptops have keyboards like the above where you can fit both layouts, yet they choose to put the non standard layout.

I used to be able to choose a laptop based on specs, and now the first thing I look is the keyboard and I only have some gamer laptops with the standard keyboard to choose from.

Why mess up with such an important thing of a laptop?

Are there any Windows equivalents to the new M1 Macbook Pros? [USA, ~$2k]

    Posted: 02 Jun 2022 07:13 AM PDT

[Form responses posted at the bottom]

I'm tentatively in the market for a new personal laptop. My work laptop is a 2021 16" Macbook Pro (M1 Pro) and I love it. I have been away from Windows/PC for quite some time...is there anything remotely like the new MBP?

    Namely:

    • At or near 4K resolution
    • At or near 250 ppi
    • 11-12 hr battery life (or higher)
    • Relatively thin & light (around 3.5 lbs)
    • Solid build quality & not plastic

I'd be curious to know if such a thing exists, irrespective of price. But even better if it's around the same price as the 14" model at USD $2,000.

    << FORM >>

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Roughly USD $2,000, but flexible
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I wouldn't, I want an ultrabook with high build quality, performance and batter life. Right now, I think the Macbook Pro is the only one that does that, but I'm looking to see if there are others.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Light gaming, nothing intensive
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard & large, responsive trackpad
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      See preamble
