This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Pc exhaust/ heat dump/ Room Temp management.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 08:46 PM PDT

I have created a device that transfers the heated air from my pc out my window. This was to reduce the amount of heat released into my room while gaming. Since the hot air is typically recycled and mixed together with the A/C cooled air and enters the pc again. I this now mixed air will heat my computer more as time goes on. My thought process is that with the addition of my device, all components will be running cooler, CPU,GPU, Motherboard, etc. I find this a better alternative than decreasing my thermostat temperature, or buying a new pc case, fan, aio, etc.

Also I live in Arizona which easily reaches 100F or 37.778C during the summer. My pc build is NZXT H510 (bad airflow) Ryzen 7 3700x, Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 12gb, 3x120mm and 1x140mm fans.

I want to know if people would be interested or have concerns with doing something like this.

New to gaming PC after 18+ years on console. Just built a pc with intel i7 12700k, rtx3070ti and 32gb ram

I thought the pc was going good getting 120fps to 150fps on 1440p then just figured out after 3 weeks iv had the display port plugged into the mobo instead of directly into the rtx3070ti now I'm hitting fps cap across the board

Hahah it's like night and day and super stable

I just bought a 3070 fe and it gets hot as hell !

    Posted: 31 May 2022 01:03 AM PDT

Long story short, I changed my KFA2 1080 who already get hot 80 while gaming with a custom fan curve, yesterday I tried rocket league for the first time since I bought my new to me 3070 fe.

I didn't really bother checking temp because the game was running good on my 1080 so it must be good on the 3070, but after a few matches I found out the card was a 92 f*cking degrees ! I had to start afterburner to create a custom fan curve so the card won't fry…

How is this normal ? I'm really confused

    CPU - I9 12900k

CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black

    GPU - RTX 3090

    RAM - 32 GB DDR5 4800 mhz

    PSU - Corsair RM1000x (2021)

thinking of giving my 12 yo boy an upgrade, need your suggestions.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 08:58 PM PDT

1 year and a half ago thanks to this subreddit I managed to get my son a basic gaming Pc, it is a Ryzen 3 3200g (just before the insane gpus shortage) 2x16 gb 3000 MHz RAM, a320 motherboard, a decent brand 600w pu and a 22 inch 1080 75 Hz monitor. I know this is nothing to brag about but it has served him well and best of all he is HOOKED on PC gaming, I don't think he has touched the PS4 one single time in the past 16 months. Now he wants UPGRADES, he has saved every single peso (Mexican currency) in hopes to some day buy a GPU or a better APU. Prices are still high and he definitely can not afford other than a ryzen 5 5600g, So my wife and I are planning on surprising him with something extra, it could be a b450 motherboard and a 1650 gtx to pair with the ryzen 5 5600g or chip in to buy him a Ryzen 7 5700g with the motherboard.. IT'S ALL WE CAN AFFORD here in Mexico.. which do you think is a more valuable upgrade from a ryzen 3 3200g? Ryzen 5 5600g with 1650gtx ? Or just go with the Ryzen 7 5700g and hope sometime in the future can afford a good GPU?

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

BTW he is planning on giving his APU and motherboard to his younger brother (8 yo) who has an AMD A6 7400 and is also getting excited on PC gaming

About to order my first gaming PC, is everything here OK?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 12:58 PM PDT

Hello! Just want to keep making sure I didn't mess anything up when building:

    MOBO: GIGABYTE Z690 GAMING X DDR4

    CPU: Intel Core i7-12700K

GPU: MSI RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X OC

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 PC4-25600 32GB 2x16GB CL16

    COOLER: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black (air)

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6 850W 80 Plus Gold Full Modular

CASE: NOX HUMMER TGX RAINBOW RGB 3.0 USB

2 SDD (WD BLACK) + 1 old HDD for misc storage

I've done quite a lot of research to avoid messing things up since my budget was around 2000€ and there was quite a lot to choose from. Is everything here in order? Any compatibility/bottleneck issues? Or components you would change?

    Thanks in advance!

    First build final check

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/phYNpH

Never had a PC but have done some research and this is what I have. Had a few questions before I pull the trigger. 1. Is the cooling system enough? I'm afraid I might not have enough exhaust, but I'm not sure. 2. Will the i5 12400f bottleneck the 3070? 3. Excluding a monitor, is there anything else Ill need to get it up and running? Like, will I need a separate power cable or does the PSU come with one. 4. If I get more fans will I need to order anything fancy to mount it? Any other feedback for a first time user would be helpful.

Quadro Video Cards in 2022. Do they make sense?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 04:11 PM PDT

Hello, before you jump the gun, I'm talking specifically about the low end of Quadro cards, in nowadays generation, the Quadro T1000, T600, T400.

The reason I'm asking is due to a friend who sparked this discussion the other day, saying that those cards are utter merchandise crap that don't even bring a thing to the table; He works in a big enterprise and they buy these low end quadro 'bEcAuSe ThEy ArE eNtErPrIsE' and it makes no sense.

    Why?

    • It has no ECC. Literally none.
    • It has low VRAM, even a RTX 3060 or a GTX1060 has more VRAM than the most expensive Quadro low-end. (T1000 has 4GB).

And I'd like to know what the heck is the point of a Quadro if it's going to lack those features.

Can someone enlighten me? I've tried to search online but all the questions are really dumb like "Is Quadro good for gaming?" and similar. My question is the other way around, does a low-end Quadro card make sense in the professional environment?
My friend says they don't bring anything to the table, beyond 'long term support' for a card that's already 'obsolete' from the get-go.

    Thanks

Need advice for my first PC build. I'd like to start streaming.

    Posted: 31 May 2022 05:01 AM PDT

I'm going to buy a gaming PC but I know absolutely nothing about them. I want to spend somewhere between £600-£900.

I'm mainly going to be playing Minecraft (vanilla and modded), as well as some other games. I don't plan on playing any high-performance AAA games, such as The Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, Cyberpunk 2077, etc. Mainly just Minecraft and stuff like A Hat in Time and The Sims 4 (both modded).

I would also like to start streaming these and some other games, such as retro games and other random stuff. Think Vargskelethor/Vinesauce Joel. I want my streams to be as smooth as possible, on the budget. I'd potentially also use the PC for animation and game development (GameMaker Studio) in the future.

I'm buying from the UK. Apparently PC Part Picker UK is the way to go, but if you know of another good places please let me know. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you! :)

(Advice) First time PC builder, long time enthusiast, looking for a pro’s advice

    Posted: 31 May 2022 04:51 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm a pro cinematographer/colourist/editor who also occasionally games that wanted to build the most powerful PC I could build for my needs. I do a lot of very intensive 4/6/8K video rendering, After Effects work and eventually some blender work as well. After a good amount of research and price comparing, I placed my order with Newegg Canada last night. My components are:

    CPU: RYZEN AMD 5950X Processor

    GPU: EVGA FTW3 ULTRA 3090 24G VRAM

MOBO: ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO ATX BOARD

    RAM: 128GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX DDR4 3200 RAM (x4 32GB Sticks… maybe overkill, I know LOL)

STORAGE: SAMSUNG 980 PRO 1TB INTERNAL SSD (With Heatsink)

COOLING: -NZXT Z63 LIQUID COOLER + LCD SCREEN -Also added x1 COOLERMASTER SICKLEFLOW ARGB 140MM FAN (apparently my case comes with 5 fans already)

PSU: SEASONIC FOCUS GX-1000W 80+ GOLD

    WIFI CARD/ADAPTER: ROSEWILL RNX-AC600PCEv4 AC600 WiFi Adapter

CASE: FRACTAL DESIGN TORRENT COOLING MID-TOWER E-ATX CASE

-x1 extra tube of thermal paste.

I'm very excited, but also somewhat weary, as I've never built a PC before and will be building this myself. What I am wondering is: are there any experienced PC builders out there that might share thoughts on issues I might run into with this setup, tips for building/setting up, compatibility issues you might foresee, or just any general knowledge for this build that would be good for somebody who's a newbie?

Also, yes, before anybody asks… Yes, I am broke now and yes, I am accepting hugs.

All help much appreciated in advance.

Need help, adding SSD, what’s cloning?

    Posted: 31 May 2022 02:30 AM PDT

    Hi

I have a M2 SSD in my laptop. It has space for a 2.5 SSD, those thicker ones.

I simply was planning on adding another 500 GB 2.5 SSD. But got confused reading reviews. Everyone was talking about cloning.

Can't I simply add this to increase storage capacity? Why are people cloning? Do I have to clone if I want to use both?

    RX 6400 High temperatures

    Posted: 30 May 2022 08:13 PM PDT

I recently built an all new PC, and while it is great for my usage, my RX 6400 Asrock, temperatures are a bit worrying

While idle, it stays cool, around 40° (Celsius) degrees and the GPU fan doesn't start, while gaming, on not very demanding titles like Rocket League, the temps don't go over 65°

BUT, while playing something like The Witcher 3 or Borderlands 3, it surpasses 75° easily, and can even reach 85° sometimes (My CPU barely reaches 70° at max while gaming)

I've seen some benchmarks on youtube and none of them seemed to get past 75°, so I'm a bit lost

My case doesn't have fans at all, and my test without the case side panel didn't bring much different results, only that it takes a bit longer to get to these 80° degrees

I can't mess with the fan curve on MSI afterburner, I think the card doesn't support it, so:

Is there something I could safely change in the BIOS to help against this or something? (Really don't know if this is even an option)

I currently have space for 3 frontal fans of 120mm, and one 120mm at the back in my case, should I invest on case fans, and would they actually work? I don't wanna go over the hassle of buying and installing them to be disappointed to see the GPU still so hot

Need a thunderbolt dock/hub with switching suggestion

    Posted: 31 May 2022 03:35 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a PC and a laptop, I use my pc exclusively for gaming and thus my laptop for everything else.

I am looking for a thunderbolt dock or hub that I could connect all of my PC peripherals to, and then connect it to both my laptop and PC, and then just switch which one I use with a button maybe.

I saw something similar on AliExpress but it was only 4 usb-a's and connected to the computers using usb-a's as well.

If I use a regular hub, every time I want to use one computer or the other I would have to crawl under the table and pass the connector and stuff, and I want to avoid all of that.

I don't need many peripherals for support, maybe 2 USB-A's for keyboard and mouse, and a DisplayPort for my monitor.

I want to use my Bluetooth 5.2 earbuds on my PC, but my integrated BT (transmitter?) is absolute garbage and basically doesn't work with anything. What kind of device should I buy to get my earbuds to work the best?

A $10 BT 5.0 USB thing or a $80 wifi pcie card that also supports BT 5.2? Would a pcie BT have more range if it has access to more power? Or would a USB device be functionally identical?

Do you need anti virus software ?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 01:11 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

A while ago I was reading a thread on here what to do with a new build and what programs to install once you're setting up. A few in the comment sections were saying that there would be no need for an antivirus. Seeing as I just got my new build to work (finally) I was wondering if I needed to it or not.

If so what do you guys recommend ?

Is Amazon 3080 pricing good or are there better deals?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 09:19 PM PDT

Am looking to make a build for vr with a 5800x cpu and either a 3070 or a 3080. Just saw amazon has a 3080 around $850, is that pretty good these days or nah? My assumption is msrp is out of the question atm. Also, which motherboard would go well with these?

My pc had a 1070 and an i5-6600k, considered replacing those parts but i figure might as well upgrade at this point.
