New Laptop for Coding and Moderate Gaming

    Posted: 29 May 2022 03:34 PM PDT

Hey everyone, my current laptop (2017 MacBook Pro) is starting to kick the bucket so I'm looking to get a replacement before returning to university in the fall.

I'm studying computer science so I'll be doing quite a bit of programming, and I'd also like to do some occasional gaming. I don't necessarily need to run top-of-the-line settings but I'd like to be able to run games at average performance. If it can run the new Lego Star Wars and Minecraft that's good enough for me.

From my research, it seems that an Intel i7 and RTX 3060 can give more performance than I need, which I see as good future-proofing (I'd like this laptop to last through the end of school). Many laptops in this range seem to be $1000 - $1500 which is pushing it for my budget; I'd like to keep it as close to $1000 as possible.

Settling for an RTX 3050 reduces the monetary requirements somewhat, but I don't know how much performance this would actually sacrifice. Computers with AMD chips like the Legion 5 are also cheaper than Intel machines but it seems that AMD isn't as good as Intel, is that true?

Ironic as it is being a CS student, I don't have a good sense of how various CPUs and graphics cards actually stack up to each other and what I can afford to downgrade in my budget. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Looking for a laptop with a quality chassis, keyboard and display

    Posted: 29 May 2022 08:50 PM PDT

I am a self-employed consultant, and I use my laptop primarily for Figma, Visio, Miro, PowerPoint and Teams stuff. I also occasionally spin up multiple VMs (think an ADDS environment). I use a lot of PowerShell and surface hub integration, so Windows is a must.

I currently have a 13" surface book 3. I love it, but it's going to be relegated to personal finance stuff at home. Long story.

I like the surface models because of the keyboard travel, Windows Hello, the glass display and the all aluminium chassis.

I don't like surfaces because the displays kind of suck, low refresh rates and crappy repairability.

I like the look of the zBook but the lack of a glass-faced display puts me off.

Wants: - 15-16" display (3:2 aspect ratio is great but rare) - nice keyboard travel - solid chassis, machined preferably - glass display - 32-64GB RAM - repairability - not too heavy, will lug between sites - must have a nice look to it - must run Windows

I won't really want to look at new laptops, refurbished is fine.

    Budget is high.

New Laptop for Uni. Need it to do Video Editing, a little bit of gaming, some entertainment, that sorta deal

    Posted: 29 May 2022 08:44 PM PDT

Im going to college and Im planning on doing video and media based classes and major. Im looking for something thats gonna last 4 years and run Premiere Pro well; and basically just League of Legends when Im traveling maybe Valorant too. I assume that if my laptop can run Premiere its basically set to do anything else but wanted to ask here first. I have a pretty beefy desktop already, I just need a laptop for on the go editing and gaming when I travel or am working on projects not at a desk. Looking at getting a Dell Latitude 3520 as of now since it looks fine to me so far and is 40% off

Less powerful desktop VS my new laptop: what should be my main device?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 08:01 PM PDT

So I recently bought a new gaming laptop to use for on the go music production and gaming when I need it. The problem I'm facing now is should I make it my main driver?

    Desktop: Nvidia 2060, Intel I7 7700k @ 4.3ghz, 16GB DDR4 2600mhz

    Laptop: Nvidia 3070, AMD Ryzen 5900H, 16GBS DDR5 3200mhz

I use my devices to game, edit videos, and make music, which is why I didn't wanna cheap out on too many places with the new laptop.

The only downsides I'm seeing with switching over to my laptop would be heating concerns (that boi gets HOT) and not being able to use my dual monitor setup (I'd basically just be "docking" my laptop into some sort of stand/cooler, plugging in the power and display cable into the single display port it has).

I just got a new desk so I wanted some philosophical input from yall before I finalize my new setup.

Is an HP Chromebook a good laptop for college?

I'm just wondering if this would be a decent fit for college and would it actually hold up for a few years? I asked my brother who's in uni for a good laptop rec but he has a tech-related degree/job so his computers are obviously more high tech and expensive and just tells me anything will do since I'm going into English (fair enough). LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      between $1000-$1500 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

no, I would like a new laptop!

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I am looking for something with a high graphics card/resolution so I can play games without them looking weird/ running slow.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably around 15" but must be under 16.5" to fit in my bag.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would like to run sims 4, stardew valley, overwatch, and I also produce music so the capability to use higher end DAW would be fantastic.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I really play sims 4 the most, I'm not sure what settings I need for this.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would really like a keyboard that lights up so I can use my laptop in the dark.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thanks so much for your help, I'm also going to grad school in the fall so something that would be good for taking on the go would be good. I was looking at two laptops as a starting point so I'm not sure which of these two, or any you suggest would be the best: -MSI leopard gp66 laptop -ASUS rog strix G15

A budget Laptop for Trading & Gaming

    Posted: 29 May 2022 09:05 AM PDT

    Hello There,

I'm trying to find a decent reliable laptop for Trading mostly, with the occasional gaming.

    Here are the details:

Country: The Netherlands (so from an EU country should be ok).

    Budget: 1000 Euro

Ports: Thunderbolt - I may wish to connect 1 or 2 (or even 3) displays to in later. LAN Port (Although I'm told I can have a USB Lan connector, so maybe not a requirement).

Display: 14" and over, but MUST have resolution 1440 or greater.

Probably i5 or Ryzen 5, with dedicated Graphics? If I do game on it, it'll probably be some Fifa game.

I did find one that met my requirements in the form of ASUS Vivobook Pro 14 which cost 899euro, but an IT friend said Eww when I said 'Asus', not sure what that means.

    Anyone have a nice suggestions?

      13.3-14

Budget laptop for cities skylines/ basic video editing.

    Posted: 29 May 2022 03:38 PM PDT

    Hi all

I'm looking for a laptop which can run cities skylines and do some basic video editing.

The device will be used to play games, but it'll also need to handle the ability for me to start video editing YouTube videos.

I understand some things about computers but the majority of my modern knowledge comes from LinusTechTips so I'm assuming I'm not thinking along the right lines.

I would appreciate the ability to expand whether that's ssd nvme or ram but I must specify 17" screen or above

I hope you guys can help me for 2022

    Cheers K

    Need help finding a laptop $400 - $450, USA

    Posted: 29 May 2022 03:17 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $400 to $450

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Rather get brand new if possible

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, cooling, build quality, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, won't really be moving around the laptop much

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Starting to learn web development, programming and coding but none game related. Would only run emulators up to ps2 at most if I game at all.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If possible would like to run FF14 mmo at 30 fps but if not then no problem, that would just be a extra bonus.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Amazing cooling and battery if possible

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I'm in need of a laptop, one preferably $400. $450 at most. I need it mainly for browsing, web development, and programming/coding. The coding and programming isn't game related so don't need a GPU. The only games I would be playing is old games using an emulator, the most demanding would be ps2 games I'm guessing. If possible I would like the laptop to have amazing cooling and battery because it would be on most of the day and the room is already humid enough as is, so the less heat the better. Had past history with mold and don't want to deal with that ever again :/..... Thank you for any and all help

Is an ultrabook or 2in1 enough to get through mechanical engineering degree?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 11:02 AM PDT

Hi! I'm freshman going into mechanical engineering in two months and I'm looking for an everyday use laptop that can last 4+ years of degree, light and portable, good battery, powerful enough to do school projects (I'm guessing CAD, solidworks, MATLAB, blender etc.)!

Would also prefer a 2in1 convertible to write in, but not sure if it would be powerful enough.. would rather not have to buy another laptop.

    • I don't have a home desktop and I'm guessing school labs will be sufficient to run heavy simulations ? (advice from those in mech engineering is highly appreciated!)

    My budget is around $1200;

Let me know if any of these are suitable!

    • ASUS Zenbook 14X OLED- UX5400 (Intel Core™ i7-1165G7, Intel® Iris Xe Graphics, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)

    • ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED- M3500Q-CL1181TS (Ryzen 7 5800h, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, Nvidia RTX3050 4GB)

    • ROG Zephyrus G14- GA401Q-EK2023TS (Ryzen 7 5800HS, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce RTX3050Ti 4GB)

    • Lenovo Yoga 7i (14", Gen 5) (Intel Core™ i7-1165G7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Integrated Intel IrisXe Graphics) ^ 2 in 1!

Other suggestions are definitely welcome :) Thank you so muchh!!

    The laptop suggestions form!

Please copy-paste this into your post and fill it out; while it may take a bit of time, it will guide you through providing all of the information that is necessary for you to get good suggestions.

Avoid removing the line-breaks, as they are necessary for reddit to display the form properly. Also please avoid modifying the form too much, as AutoModerator uses its expected format to determine if your post includes the form.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideally under 1,500 USD, but can move up to 2,000 USD all-in

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > Build Quality (esp durability and endurance--I am clumsy) > Battery Life > Form

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is somewhat important. Thinness not at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I have only used <= 13in and I find it is working great for me so far. But open to suggestions!

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo Editing: Some Photoshop but tbh everything I probably will do with it can be done in Gimp

Gaming: Looking to run emulation (PPSSPP, ePSXe, idk maybe some PS2 emu if such a thing exists) as well as proper PC games like Planet Zoo

Audio Editing: Audacity (light use, mostly cutting and trimming only)

Some beginner python work via anaconda (transparently I don't know how heavy/taxing to the laptop this is)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't have a good sense of gaming specs, but I think games like The Sims and Planet Zoo are at the higher end of what I'm looking to run. Not going for something like running Monster Hunter World in the laptop

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do appreciate reliable build quality and good keyboard, as well as having at least 2 UBS ports for things like mouse and ext harddisk uses. Don't really care about touch screen or fingerprint

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have only used Lenovo Thinkpads all my life and while they have worked great for what I used them for (PPT, Word, some moderately complex Excel modeling) and even some GBA, PSP, PS1 emulation. But it is time to change laptops and wanted to sort of upgrade to the point where I can go on Steam and run most of those "light-moderate" games without concern on specs, etc. Thanks in advance!
