Should I have separate partitions for separate stuff? Why? Posted: 02 May 2022 10:20 AM PDT When I installed my system two years ago, I didn't know a lot and so I have a single big Linux partition, In my noob mind, it looks like a loss in terms of flexibility to have many separate partitions with fixed sizes, so there are probably some benefits that I don't see Edit: fixed grammar [link] [comments] |
USB deactivating in BIOS (UEFI) Posted: 02 May 2022 01:42 PM PDT Sorry to ask on here but I've got to the limits of what I can find on Google and don't know where to look now. It's not a Linux issue as such, but is coming about whilst trying to install Linux on a PC. I've got an Acer Revo M1-601 which I'm trying to install Linux on to run as a home automation server. I've tried to create a number of bootable USB drives (Tried different distros including POP OS, Lubuntu and some others). I can create the USB fine and get the pc restart and 'boot' from the USB, however once the first screen comes up (usually asking to select installation type/whether to run) it seems like all the USB sockets disconnect - my keyboard stops working and the bootable USB does to. Essentially everything freezes. This also happens if I try to go into the advanced/legacy bios - it opens up the first screen of the bios but then they keyboard stops working so I can't select anything. From Google there are some suggestions to run Legacy USB support but I don't think I should need to do that for UEFI bios? Also I can't get to the point of changing to legacy USB support because my keyboard stops working! The PC only has USB 3.0 ports and no PS/2 port. Anyone have any other suggestions for how I can install a version of Linux on this? It's only got 32gb storage so I want something lighter than a virtual machine on Windows 10. [link] [comments] |

Pretty new linux enjoyer getting into this world Posted: 02 May 2022 12:32 PM PDT So my interest in the Linux world is growing day by day and i'm thinking about switching completely from Windows. I've only used Ubuntu so far and even if i like it i'm looking around for so many reviews a day of various distros and i've come down to a 3 ways choice since i wanna avoid distro hoppings. The 3 distros i'm interessed in the most are Debian Fedora and Arch. From my research Fedora kinda looks like a sort of halfway betwwen the other 2 so i guess that could be the one? I'm still very very new to Linux tho so i thought that asking for opinions here would be the best [link] [comments] |
Video stuttering when video player window is resized Posted: 02 May 2022 03:46 PM PDT I'm using Gnome, Plasma, bspwm and qtile, nvidia with 510 drivers, Endeavour OS. When I open a video and don't resize the window, it plays well, but if I do resize, it starts screen tearing. If i force full composition pipeline, tearing is replaced by stuttering. Disabling compositors doesn't change things either. Unfortunately I haven't found a clue on google so far. No such problems on windows, I'm using MPV there too. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2022 11:45 AM PDT I have a AMD RX 6600XT and a monitor that supports both freesync and gsync. Do all DEs like Gnome and KDE support 144hz. And does it work on X11 and Wayland? Is the gaming front support this in most titles on steam as it would windows. Both native and Proton. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2022 01:56 PM PDT Hello, So I am trying to move away from Zoom and Jitsi Meet is really good the only problem is that it doesn't provide screen annotation so do you guys have any suggestions for a good screen annotation tool? Preferably Cross platform (Windows and Linux at least) but i won't be picky since i didn't find much in my search [link] [comments] |
What does "real-time" kernel mean? Posted: 02 May 2022 01:18 PM PDT |
Posted: 02 May 2022 12:55 PM PDT Hello guys I am a new user of Kubuntu, but i like it enough that i want to make it my primary OS. I have a laptop that dual boots Win10+Kubuntu 22.04. I have installed it on a partition that's sized at 50gbs, and i thought that i would be able to write files on the other partitions on my SSD. However, i am unable to do so. Thence, i created a new NTFS partition in the hopes that it might be accessible, but to no avail. I am unable to even make a new folder. I tried looking for help online, and used the fdisk -l command. However, that didn't work. See attached screenshot for reference please. Screenshot Can any of you help me stay on this OS? I don't know if you will need any further information about my machine. If so kindly ask. Edit: My laptop is a Lenovo Z-50-70. i5-4210U. Context(unrelated to question): I am a noob to this. I am fed up of the slowcoach nature of Windows. I installed an SSD in my laptop hoping to make it work faster. However, it's still a bit lethargic. I realised that the bottleneck is windows itself with its own heft and bulk. Thus, i tried Kubuntu, and i like how it is snappy and kind of clean and flat looking. I am a student and my usage is mostly browsing, YouTube, word processing, and such. I don't game much, but plan to dab into (light) Linux gaming as i gain experience in this OS. As of now, i have only used the command to install snaps - 'sudo apt install', and 'remove'. I would appreciate any help. [link] [comments] |

No sound from Runelite on Arch Posted: 02 May 2022 06:33 AM PDT Hi there, I am not sure how to debug this properly or deal with it even if I did know how to. No matter what I do (within my understanding) I can't hear my game audio. I use Arch with LTS kernel, nvidia proprietary driver, with cinnamon desktop. I have found this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=260171. The issue seems to stem from droidcam which I do have and need, so uninstalling it is not an option. How can I remedy this issue? Thanks in advance! I have installed pulseaudio-alsa and tried the modprobe thing, it says that module snd_aloop is in use. [link] [comments] |

MATE on Linux Mint Debian Edition Posted: 02 May 2022 07:20 AM PDT I've been using the Linux Mint Debian Edition for a while now, and I find it to be a great distro. But I think the Cinnamon desktop environment kind of lets it down. I've seen a little on MATE when it comes to it's Ubuntu flavor - Ubuntu MATE. MATE seemed to have a great appearance switch that I was very interested in. My question is can I install the MATE desktop environment on top of my Linux Mint (Debian Edition) and for now I'll keep Cinnamon, but I might decide to delete it later on? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2022 07:01 AM PDT Hi all, Firstly im running linux mint 20 on a Dell inspiron 5515. On windows the laptop ships with a preinstalled and preconfigured OEM application called Waves-Maxx Audio that tweaks the laptop speakers to make them louder and improving overall quality. On Mint the only similar sound feature I've found is the overamplification but that results in the speakers sounding overexposed compared to windows. Is there any similar community built software to mimic this windows solution?. [link] [comments] |
some fonts (e.g. BDF) only show up in a few plces Posted: 01 May 2022 07:14 PM PDT A while ago I switched from ubuntu to arch based distro. Most applications on my system will not display or use BDF fonts. However some do. For example, Kate text editor and GIMP will. On the other hand, Inkscape, XFCE and Font Manager will not. On my previous system running ubuntu I had no problem with them so I believe the fonts themselves are fine. I obtained the fonts from this repo nd also installed via package manager with same result. Is there something needed to make all fonts work everywhere? [link] [comments] |

Live Disk GUI is hiding under a blank screen Posted: 02 May 2022 06:28 AM PDT So I've been trying to install Linux for the first time ever. I choose my laptop which is a Huawei Matebook 14 2020 (the one with the 2k 3:2 monitor) with the Nvidia Mx350, so, under suggestion of reddit, i choose Pop_Os 22.04 with the Nvidia drivers. I followed the instructions directly from System76 website and created a live disk (which I'm certain works perfectly because I later tried to boot it on my main PC and worked just fine). When I boot the thumb disk onto the laptop and after the code is done loading, i get nothing but a green screen (green in the shade of the Pop_OS, if it might help) with just the mouse cursor running around. The interesting thing is that moving the cursor I can actually find the edges of a window which can be stretched. But everything is hiding under this green screen. Ctrl+alt+F1 brings me to the profiles screen which is fully functional (the resolution is perfectly adapted to the screen) and where the only available is the live disk user of course and where I can turn off or restart the PC. Ctrl+alt+f4 brings me to the console where it asks me to log in. I also tried to connect different second monitors but they always end up be covering from this monochrome screen too. I've been searching around the web for answers but found none. I've seen some people managed to get Linux on other Huawei laptops tho, so I don't think the manufacturer blocked it in any way. I didn't try other distros but I'm downloading the Ubuntu iso right now; updates will follow. Thanks for your time! [link] [comments] |
Change flatpak directory to /home Posted: 02 May 2022 08:46 AM PDT Hey guys, any way to change the flatpak directory? I mean, flatpak install apps on /var/lib/flatpak/... but I want to install in some folder in my /home. How to do that, if this is possible? [link] [comments] |

How to add noise cancellation preset in Pipewire? Posted: 02 May 2022 01:40 AM PDT Hi, I'm using Fedora 35 and I'm new to pipewire, and I'm trying to activate noise cancellation on my microphone. I did, however, through EasyEffect in w/c I enabled the noise cancellation. But, I realized that EasyEffect must always be on to activate the effect. Is there any proper way to address the noise cancellation? [link] [comments] |
Accentuated letters get captalise automatically when changing windows via keyboard Posted: 02 May 2022 04:59 AM PDT So, I'm using bspwm and whenever I use Meta+h,j,k,l to change the active window for like LibreOffice Writer, when I type an accentuated letter like "é" it automatically turns into "É". If I click with the mouse to focus on the window it types normally. I use fcitx5 to manage my keyboard layouts, I have the US, Portuguese and Japanese layouts set on it. [link] [comments] |
