How do I delete extra networks?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 01:30 PM PDT

Hi, newbie here with limited abilities. That said, I'm the glorified tech guru of my family, since everyone else is technologically challenged. My sister has (I'm 95% sure) the Xfinity combination modem/router, as well as an Orbi mesh system (they couldn't get the Netgear Nighthawk to work with their system, but that's another subject). She was looking at her wifi networks and realized they have FIVE, including the ORBI one. 3 of them have similar names, with or without underscores, spaces, etc.

I'm sure they created some of these by mistake, but it freaks my sister out. Can she delete some of these? I'm not there so I can't see anything first-hand.

    Help choosing which Asus router?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 12:35 PM PDT

Hi all. I'm moving into a home in a month and instead of renting a modem and router, I'd like to purchase my own. The only option I have is Optimum and despite the horror stories, I've heard some people upgrading their routers to have a decent stable connection.

I've looked at a few brands and I think I'm going to go with Asus. Among complaints I hear about Netgear and TP-Link, the only thing I hear about Asus is overheating problems. Otherwise, everyone seems to recommend them.

Here is where I need help. I'm not sure which to choose from. For a background, the home will be bi-level 2000 sq ft. I game here and there but would consider gaming among the priorities of a good router. (So maybe QoS functionality might be neat to mess around with?) Other top priorities would be streaming UHD content. The devices connected would be 2 computers, phone, 2-3 TVs, Playstation, Ring security systems and that's about it. I do plan on having room mates in the future, so that along with guests that come over, devices connected would fluctuate of course. Also might be interested in starting a homelab in the future as I'm studying for a Network+ exams and the concept seems interesting.

So I see 3 price points:

    $100 AX1800 (RT-AX55)

    $164 AC2900 (RT-AC86U)

$250 AX7500 (RT-AX86U) (Weird, the price seems to fluctuate constantly between $250 and $280)

I hear a lot of praise for the AX86U. I'm wondering if that steeper price tag is worth it or would I be fine with any of the cheaper options. I'm not opposed to spending money on the expensive option, just don't want to if I really don't need to. And by the modeling name, I'm wondering what the AX has over the AC for the 86U model. Thanks a lot for the help!

Best AP to pair with ASUS RT-AX86U?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 03:50 PM PDT

I have an ASUS RT-AX86U that is covering most of my 2000 sq ft duplex apartment, but need better coverage for the rooftop. I have ethernet running to that location. Is it better to add a TP-LINK/Netgear access point or better to add an ASUS router used as AP, in order to get more seamless switching between them? Also, I want a low maintenance, plug-and-play system. Instead of an AP, would I therefore be better off with a mesh+backhaul so that I don't have to deal with a controller and managed network?

How do I stop number X in 192.168.1.x from changing

    Posted: 02 May 2022 09:47 AM PDT

So I host a Minecraft server on my laptop and sometimes the number x in 192.168.1.x changes, which is really annoying when hosting a Minecraft server as I have to adjust the port forwarding for the server every time it changes. Is there a way to stop the x from changing?

Small, 5 port Gigabit switch powered with PoE?

Looking for a small (5-8 port) switch for my wife's office that can be powered over PoE to avoid yet another power cord; I have PoE coming out of my main switch. I don't need passthrough to any of the devices on the switch in my wife's office.

Computer cannot access any other devices on the local network while connected via ethernet, but can via wifi.

    Posted: 02 May 2022 03:39 PM PDT

Hi, this is an issue I've been trying to deal for a very long time, but I could never seem to fix it. For some reason, my desktop is unable to connect with any local devices if it's using an ethernet connection.

For example, opening a simple http server with python. If I do it whilst using WIFI, I can access it on my phone using the desktop's local ip, but if i switch to ethernet, grab the new IP and try again, it does not work.

This applies to all kinds of services, like directory sharing or things like DroidCam. Network is set as private and windows firewall is definitely not the problem as I tried disabling it and I still had the issue. Please help I feel like I'm going insane.

    Update:

I have tried switching the Ethernet cable from LAN1 to the LAN2 port on my router. I was then able to access local devices on my desktop, like the python http server mentioned above, but I had no internet access and I couldn't get it to work.

connecting 2nd wifi router to "main" wifi router possible?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 03:18 PM PDT

Hello r/homenetworking, I am new to this sub so sorry if my post is not set up properly. I am a novice w.r.t networking. I have a slightly unusual situation that i couldn't find the solution to through my googling.

Basically, I have a router that is connected to the internet using a ubiquiti radio, and I'm wondering if it's possible for me to connect a second router to one of the LAN ports of the main router and have it function as a kind of extension of the first router, or as its own router.

My thoughts were plugging ethernet wire into the LAN port of the first router and connecting that to the WAN port of the second router. I'm not sure if this would cause any kinds of issues with the router being able to distribute IP addresses to devices on its network or something else I'm not even thinking of.

    ty in advance

What’s needed for my new home setup?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 03:18 PM PDT

I need some help to work through what I need in my home network setup.

I currently run a pretty simple setup - ASUS AX88U router (and a NBN NTD (I'm in Australia). Bunch of smart home devices (hue, cameras, blinds) - mostly connected via wifi. iMac connected via Ethernet and everything else (consoles, tv, laptops etc).

However in my new place, I'll have ethernet into every room and outside - so I want to wire everything up, inc some new PoE cameras. In future, I also want to add a NAS into the mix and have a tinker with Home Assistant.

So what do I need? Do I keep the AX88U and just add a 24/48 port switch? Do I ditch the AX88U? What type of switch do I need?

$2,000 laptop can't get 1 gig in speed?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:49 PM PDT

I am paying At&t fiber for 2 gigs in speed, and I am getting 940 mbps at best, i have a ASUS G513 5900HX/32/1/15.6HG laptop.

I contacted asus support that says my laptop should be getting around 2.4 when plugged directly into the modem.

They directed me to upgrade the drivers which did nothing.

What computer / laptop can support 2 or more gigs in internet speed, I have a cat 7 ethernet cable. So i am confused and frutrated.

I know classes are obsolete, but why could a class C network only have 254 host addresses?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:43 PM PDT

My confusion comes from the fact that after the first octet is fixed to make a class C network, say 192.0.0.0, there are still 2^12-2 possible host addresses starting a with 192. So why wouldn't a particular class C network have had 4094 possible hosts?

Wired Backhaul Help in 3 level townhouse

    Posted: 02 May 2022 06:56 AM PDT

Hoping someone can help me out. I've searched around but have not had any luck finding something similar to my setup.

I live in a 2300 sq foot 3 level townhouse. 4 years old. Looking for help on best placement for wired backhaul mesh system.

Bottom floor - this is where our coax comes in to the house and is my only location for a dedicated access point on the bottom level. (no ethernet ports on the floor other than in here) This is in our network cabinet which is where I can wire the other ports in the house. This is centered on the level, not on one end or the other but centered in a utility closet.

2nd floor - ethernet port is on the back wall of the townhouse.

3rd floor(top) - ethernet is also on the back wall of the townhouse. Essentially right above the one on the 2nd level.

Right now I have just one main Orbi router placed on the bottom floor in the utility closet and get ok coverage throughout the house but I'd like to really strengthen the signal and maximize the Gig Comcast internet I have. Would it make sense to have a 3 pack mesh and place one on bottom floor, and setup ethernet backhaul with one on each of the other 2 floors even thought those top 2 would be right above/below each other? I do have an Orbi satellite that goes with the router but I currently do not have it connected. Maybe connect that satellite to the 2nd or 3rd floor and see how that goes? The Orbis are about 4-5 years old at this point.

Thanks for any feedback you can give. If there are any questions please let me know.

Finally getting rid of the old Verizon rented router and want to buy a new one to own. Looking for something that sets up easily and “just works”, advice?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:23 PM PDT

I apologize if this a simple post that doesn't really fit the sub. But I want to make a good decision.

I have Verizon Fios 1 GB internet in a 2,000 sq ft single family home. I'm looking to buy one router to replace my current rented one that can handle 40ish devices wirelessly. My PC is the only thing wired with Ethernet ( I know as much as possible should be wired but it would require to much work at the moment). I am NOT concerned with special settings and tight knit security. I'm really looking for a router that I can plug in, set up easily, and it will simply work if that makes sense. Not buffer while streaming, consistently give wifi to smartphones, tablets, be reliable with smart home light switches/devices etc etc. Some of the post I read on this sub get really nitty gritty when it comes to servers and security and all the amazing but yet complicated stuff some of you have in your homes

From my google research I'm leaning towards a Eero Pro 6 but I wanted to check with r/HomeNetworking before making a purchase.

Lastly which Cat Ethernet cable should I be using ( 6,6a,8) and is there a group of brands that is generally recommended in this sub?

Edit* I do also have Verizon fios TV service, currently the older boxes with the coax cables. May switch to the newer ones in the future

Is the tp-link eR-605 the best option?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:10 PM PDT

I have the tp-link AC750 Archer C2, it's with me a couple of years, has it's problems (occasional restarts, 3-16ms delay when pinging it from direct connection, something's not good with the way it handles DHCP as well). I'm looking to replace it with something that'll handle what I need, which is the basic stuff + DDNS, I don't really need WiFi as I have APs for that. I was looking at the tp-link ER-605, but is it the best value choice? it's 60$, and it seems great, but I don't know as it's titled as a 'VPN Router' on Amazon.

Moving to AP from mesh. What to do about firewall?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 02:00 PM PDT

What are people with access points typically do about a firewall?

Right now, I have a Google wifi mesh puck connected to my cable modem. The LAN port from the puck is connected to a switch. I have several devices connected through Ethernet to that switch.

If I migrate from mesh to access points, I'm going to lose the firewall protection of Google wifi. What should I replace that with? I have a couple of old TP-Link routers. I could turn off the wifi radio on them and use for firewall capability only. Would that be a good option?

2 ethernet cables into router from modem?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 01:56 PM PDT

    My Router: TP-Link Archer C5400X

    My Modem:Technicolor TC4400-AMV2B

So on the router page they say "Combine the WAN port with a LAN port to connect DOCSIS 3.1 modems for best-in-industry internet speeds."

What exactly does this do & should I do this. So like I'm guessing I use both ethernet ports on my modem & I plug them into my WAN port & LAN 1 port?

Would I have to enable a certain setting on my router to do this?

Is this possible for extension to garden room?

    Posted: 02 May 2022 01:46 PM PDT

Had a search and couldn't find anything in previous posts. Maybe because I couldn't think of decent search terms, so apologies if this has been asked before.

I have a garden room I use as an office. It's out of range of the WiFi in the house so my current workaround is that I'm running an ethernet cable from a WiFi extender in a room at the back of my house (router is too far away), through the wall and out 40 metres to the garden room then just plug my laptop directly into the ethernet. This works fine but the cable is slightly annoying and limits where I can work from in the garden room. Fine if I sit at the desk but I have a couch out there too and sometimes I'd like to be able to just kick back on the couch and use my laptop from there. I could extend the ethernet cable but ideally I'd like to not have an annoying cable running across the room (first world problems, eh?)

My idea is to get a second WiFi extender for the outbuilding and plug the ethernet cable directly into that, imagining (perhaps naively) that this will allow me to connect wirelessly to the extender. Will that work? Any problems I should anticipate.

I have googled but can't make much sense of the answers I've found and not even sure if they refer to specifically what I want to do. They talk about making sure the devices don't share the same SSID?

In short: router -> internal extender (wirelessly to router) -> ethernet -> external extender -> laptop (wirelessly to external extender)

But i dont have any idea of this, i just want to have an open nat to play games, so please be patient with me :)

I googled for stun clients or servers but they dont have any info on how to install them or use them, like this one https://github.com/moien007/STUN so if someone can help me with an app that is easy to install or some instructions on how to install a stun server or client please.

    Thank you very much.

Thoughts on grounding metal chassis Netgear hubs? Probably more of an idea than a question. Also mine might be really neat, and/or extremely impractical and improper.

    Posted: 02 May 2022 12:50 PM PDT

I've got a Netgear DS104 hub, and a Netgear FS108 switch. Both have a small ground lug on the back. Instead of sending a ground wire to those lugs, what I wound up doing was using shielded cat5 cable. The kind with a metal shield around the plugs too. Thus that shielded cable electrically connected ground from the computer chassis into the Netgear gadget, also only did this to one computer, instead of all, because I don't want a ground loop or however it is that interference works. Not a strong ground should there be like a lightning strike or something, but seems to work for shielding the device of rf, and such.

    Can you mix powerline adaptors?

I just set up a TP Link powerline extender. I can connect to the network (either 2.4 or 5G) just fine with my phone and with my SO's PC computer. I can also connect to the 2.4 network with my mac, but I cannot connect to to the 5G one. When I open network settings it says "wifi does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet."
