Lenovo T14s Gen 2 vs Dell Vostro 5410?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 11:07 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm deciding between the Lenovo T14s Gen 2 and Dell Vostro 5410. I'm struggling to see why the Dell is much cheaper right now ($500 cheaper) than the Lenovo. They both have the specs I want, listed below:

    • Processor: 11th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 11000 series
    • OS: Windows 10 Pro
    • Memory: 16 GB (Lenovo has LPDDR4x 4266MHz, and Dell has DDR4 3200 MHz)
    • Storage: 512 GB
    • Screen: 14" 1080p
    • Battery: 54 Wh

With these same specs, why is the Lenovo T14s Gen 2 more expensive than the Dell Vostro 5410?

Just wondering as she's turning 18 and loves gaming so this is gonna be the big present and she can't find out

is this laptop good for gaming and apps like Photoshop for graphic design ?

    Lenovo Legion 5 (3050ti) or HP Victus 16 (3060)

    Posted: 29 May 2022 06:05 AM PDT

Basically I want to change my Asus ROG GL553VD (5 years old now) which has a GTX 1050. The general usage will be for graphic design and some competitive FPS games (Valorant and CS GO mainly).

The best options here in Tunisia which are in my budget are the Lenovo Legion 5 and the HP Victus 16 specced as follows:

    Legion 5 :

    Ryzen 7 5800H

    RTX 3050 Ti (95w)

    1080p 165hz 100% sRGB

    512 Gb nvme SSD

    16 Gb RAM

    for 3859 Tunsian Dinars (~ 1276 USD)

    Victus 16 :

    I5 11400H or R5 5600H

    RTX 3060 (95w)

    1080p 60hz 100% sRGB or 1080p 144hz 45%NTSC (equivalent to roughly 68-69% sRGB)

    1 TB nvme SSD

    16 Gb RAM

    for 3649 TND (~1210 USD)

As I said above, graphic design is my main target so a 100% sRGB is likely to be my choice but in the same time having a high refresh rate is a plus for me (I can't invest in a good external monitor for now) and having both at the same time is great. I know that the 3050 Ti with its 4 Gb VRAM will perform worse than the 3060 in the long run but do I really need the latter when honestly I don't play much solo AAA games and I have no problems with lowering some settings to achieve the constant 60 FPS range (coming from a GTX 1050, it's a real upgrade with the 2 cards).

So the legion 5 is really appealing with its screen and overall quality but in the other hand the Victus 16 can be a good choice for the 60hz variant with the 3060 and more storage. The different CPUs are not a problem since it won't really affect my workflow or game performance that much.

What do you think I should go for ?

Sorry for the long ass dissertation.

Should I DIY a Lenovo Yoga 730-15IKB's keyboard?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 09:49 AM PDT

I have some experience with opening up laptops in the past, and removing hard drive to put in SSD, re-attach loose antennas, or add RAM.

I've never actually completely taken one apart though, which would be required for a keyboard replacement for the Lenovo Yoga. I have educated myself well ahead of time of what needs to be done (for example in the research I learned I should most definitely buy the entire keyboard piece and migrate the rest of the components instead of buying just the keyboard, which would have been a near impossible job), and I've watched videos on how to take apart this exact model three times and will continue to do so, to memorize as much as a I can all the steps.

The part itself I can get for lesss than 100 brand new from a friend in Taiwan.

Do you think someone without a ton of experience can do this? The computer works fine now even with the keyboard non-functional, and I wonder that even if I know exactly how to do this, that a reassembled laptop may run the risk of "just not being right" after such a procedure.

    Any advice welcome!

Should I buy a 2nd Laptop? (Dell Latitude 5480 in addition to Macbook Air)

    Posted: 29 May 2022 09:41 AM PDT

Hello!! I would love some opinions on if I should get a second laptop :) I have a Macbook Air from 2020 and it's fine, however I am going to be teaching again this upcoming year and I need VGA and Ethernet ports. I tried an adapter with my macbook and I honestly can't recall if the ethernet worked, but with VGA it was just showing my blank home screen, no matter what was going on on my screen. So I looked around and there seem to be Dell Latitude 5480s available refurbished, which could be a good fit and I'd expect to pay 400. All I really need is to be able to use google (searching, docs, slides) and youtube if I need to show videos, so I don't even need anything powerful, but I also want whatever I get to be a stable option that won't crap out.

I possibly only need the laptop for 8 months, which is why I'm so hesitant to get it. If I don't end up needing it afterwards, it seems like a waste.

    Thoughts?

Laptop Suggestions for IT student + Gaming

    Posted: 29 May 2022 05:08 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    MYR 9,000 - 10,500 (living in Malaysia) /converted to USD would be 2000 - 2500 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not preferred. Don't want to risk big issues in the long run for used laptops

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Priority : Performance : High Battery Life : Medium (preferably 5 - 7 hours when doing uni work on battery) Build Quality : Medium (hopefully to get a metal build laptop instead of plastic) Cooling : Medium (don't mind a high temp laptop while gaming but preferred to have some sort of good cooling)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important. Weight and thinness is not expected since I'm going for a larger performance machine.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preference is 16:10 screen. Would love that extra room for spreadsheets/work/studies

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video editing and photo editing yes but mostly leaning towards video editing as a hobby.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Games : the usual AAA games, League, R6, Call of Duty series, Elden Ring, CS:GO, Naraka Blade point, The Sons of the Forest (not released yet)

Hopefully I can play on high settings on MOST games but don't mind going medium settings for extra FPS.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A decent keyboard will be nice (especially since I'll be using it instead of an external keyboard)
    • Build Quality preferred to be metal
    • Fingerprint reader is not a MUST but would be nice to have (optional)
    • Good input yes should be at least decent considering the price I'm going with this

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

None that comes to mind now. If the comments need more info, please let me know and I will reply to get a better type of response. Thanks!

Sparks whenever I connect it to the charger

    Posted: 29 May 2022 07:34 AM PDT

Hey I would like to ask for some advice.

My laptop is an Acer one and whenever I connect the charger (or dc adapter) it sparks from the laptop's port itself. Therefore it hasn't been charged ever since.

I don't know if my laptop or the charger itself is the problem. That's why I don't know if I should let it be checked first or buy a charger for it.

Thank you for the advice in advance.

    Looking for a used laptop...

    Posted: 29 May 2022 06:33 AM PDT

Requirements: - 12-14.1" matte display with no PWM dimming (can't stress this enough, hurts my eyes). - i3-2xxx processor or better - Upgradeable RAM to at least 6GB. - Good keyboard and general build quality. - Business model, as they tend to be more reliable.

My usage doesn't get heavier than running a virtual machine with a few Firefox tabs open or using Kdenlive (lightweight video editor, not RAM-intensive really). Gonna use a Linux distro, probably Fedora.

    Hello!

I own imac 2017 rx 580 + 32gb ram + i5-7600k and xbox series x for games that requiers hard performance , such a cyberpank / elden ring etc.

I want to play mmorpg's or strategies / citybuilders / cybersport games in high/ultra presets with 60fps for next 3 years on external monitors. Sometimes Rx 580 can't allow me to play at native 5k or 1440p games with high quality picture.

So i planning to buy laptop with 3070 (+50-80% perf in benches) tdp 100 and ryzen 5 5600h ( +0% perf) + 4k display , is it enough for my goals or i should't spent money? (omen 15 for example)

Or i will struggle with 4k and i need to buy 1440p external disp? (or 5k to native descaling to 1440p , but it costs like a ferrari nowadays)

    Appreciate your tips.

    Laptop suggestions?

    Posted: 29 May 2022 05:54 AM PDT

Hello, I am a student and I would be going face to face next school year. My mom set a budget of 40k PHP equivalent to ~800 USD for the laptop. I have some knowledge on the PC and laptop, like having two 4gb ram sticks is better than having one 8gb ram stick.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    40K PHP (~800 buckaroos USD)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

nope. Im totally fine with it, but my mom wants new stuff.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery Life is top 1 Performance top 2 Quality top 3

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-my priority is light but heavy can be shown

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Shotcut at 1080p60, 720p if not possible. CSGO, possibly a little Valorant.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

CSGO and Valorant preferably around 60 FPS.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Optional: Good camera.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If possible I want a 144 hz monitor or 120 hz monitor. Anything higher than 60 hz.

    Thank you for your suggestions!

Need help picking between a few gaming laptop options

    Posted: 29 May 2022 05:11 AM PDT

My main desktop had the boot drive fail and part of me wants to move to a laptop as a desktop replacement and occasional portable work or light gaming machine. I was mostly using my PC for music recording/amateur production and mixing, gaming, browsing, and video chat. I don't care too much about the feel of the keyboard since I'll mostly be using my external keyboard/mouse/monitor, and lack of webcam isn't a huge deal since I have an external one. I'd like to avoid super loud fans if I can but I know that beggars can't be choosers there.

Right now I'm looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 with a 3069, Asus ROG Zephyrus 15.6 with a 3070, or an Alienware x14 with a 3060. EDIT I'm looking at an Asus Strix 15 now too, though I'd have to upgrade the SSD to 1TB pretty quick.

The Alienware would be at the very top of my budget and I'd ideally like to stay around $1500 or so. Any recommendations between these three (or another option I hadn't considered) would be awesome, thank you!
