A lightweight quiet laptop for use with general use and video watching.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 11:03 AM PDT

So I have an HP laptop from my work and they also gave me an "HP USB-C Dock G5" to dock my laptop.

Now I want a light lightweight quiet laptop with a long-lasting battery for personal use. This laptop will be on the dock most of the time and I will only take it out when I am cooking and watching something. and I want to run PS2 games Roms on it

These are the laptops that I am looking at

Also how do I compare laptops?

Zephyrus G14 vs Galaxy book 2 pro vs Xps 13 Plus for school and light gaming

    Posted: 30 May 2022 05:19 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a high school, excited to replace his very old 2013 late Mac. The basic specs are not problem here, mostly about performance and battery life. Zephyrus G14 (6900hs, 6700s), GB 2 pro (i7. arc), Xps(i7, Iris Xe graphics) are the basic specs. Portability and longevity, battery life are the conflict going on in my brain. About 7 hours in School, dunno, may be about 5 hours of max usage. I will be playing a bit o' games in-school 30m ~ 1h 20min. I usually play Valorant, Csgo, and Krunker. I am really desperate for help and if you did comment advice, thank you very much.

    Laptop Request [US]

    Posted: 30 May 2022 12:04 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Not my main concern. But the cheaper the better.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ultrabook, something sleek like a Macbook shape type.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very top priority.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-16 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Video Editing, Photo Editing, Programming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not my main concern.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      2x M.2 PCIe 4.0 (Required)
      USB 3.2 Gen 2
      Thunderbolt 4
Ability to connect to 2 External Monitors
      8 Cores
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Reasoning for 2x M.2 PCIe 4.0 is because I would put Linux on one and keep Windows on the other. I know partitioning is an option, but I'd rather keep them entirely separate.
      I'm in the US.

    Laptop suggestion

    Posted: 30 May 2022 11:48 AM PDT

Hi! I decided I might get a gaming laptop/pc soon, and my budget is about £850 (GB) or less. I'm not sure if I should get a gaming laptop, pc or to make one (i have experience). I play games like Valorant, COD, Apex, Roblox so mostly first person shooters, and I would use the device I get for school and to make and mint nfts.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Should I get a Legion 5 Ryzen 5 4600h in 2022 just for the design?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 11:38 AM PDT

I know there are better value for money laptops in the same price range like the hp pavilion and the Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3 but i like the design and build quality of the legion 5.

I just want to do moderate gaming(games like valorant and fortnite) . Should I sacrifice some performance for better design and better build quality?

which laptop to choose for editing/ and gaming?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 11:32 AM PDT

Guy at store told me alienware is best, and hp omen is 2nd choice, so have other people, majority of the internet have said ROG strix g15 (but it has no webcam ;( ) or Rog Zeph which has only 2 usb A ports, i could use adapters but idk if its a hassle.

Also as for alienware/ omen models i havent narrowed down to one so if you know which model is best then please comment it.

Anyway i have those 4 choices, what do you all think I should buy?

    Alienware

    HP Omen

    Rog strix g15

      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      No gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard preferably but if there is a laptop that is good and doesn't have a backlit keyboard, I'd prefer to go with the better performing laptop.

Hp victus 16 VS Leneovo ideapad 3

    Posted: 30 May 2022 07:11 AM PDT

Heya, i'm looking to buy a budget gaming laptop for both gaming and studying and I stumbled upon these 2 which are relatively cheaper than other products. They have the exact specs which are

Hp victus 16 VS Leneovo ideapad 3

    Ryzen 5 5600H
    RTX 3060 6gb vram
    16gb ram
    512 ssd

I would go for the legion 5 but it's way out of my budget with a rtx 3060

I game for lengthy hours and always have chrome+discord on background running, sometimes watching at the same time as playing(+an external monitor), but i don't play intensive games or care about high/ultra graphics that much(league of legends, lost ark, genshin impact,..) so i care about thermals as well. Battery life too but more for studying and portability than gaming

    Build quality(for thermals)>performance>>>battery life

PS: these are the laptops available to me in my country so there's no use in suggesting other products :<

    Appreciate the help!

Convince me out of an iPad

    Posted: 30 May 2022 03:47 AM PDT

Traveling alot for work at the moment and work laptop plus personal old thinkpad is getting tiring. This would be mainly a browsing machine with a keyboard. Recently tried a iPad Air with magic keyboard and was quite impressed with it both the portability and keyboard feel.

I think for my light tasks I would be fine with an iPad, but inevitably theyd be one program I couldn't use on IOS. So can anyone reccomend a 11" ish laptop for less than the price of an iPad plus magic keyboard running Windows? I'm open to used suggestions as my initial thought was a used x series thinkpad.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    €1000, Ireland

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ideally it would be portable enough to take to photography events for onsite work Needs to be good build quality for traveling about and high performance for editing.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lighter is obviously better but so long as it isn't super heavy its fine

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches but open to other options

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video and photo editing, Adobe suite (lightroom, photoshop, premiere and light after effects)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Gaming is not a priority but I would like a graphics card for the above applications.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Sd card slot would be desirable and good USB ports for back up and transfers

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm happy to spend 1000 for the right but would also be very happy to spend less. Durability is also important to me as a flimsy laptop will probably not stand up to the work this needs to do

    Also hate macs.

    Thank you for your time.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 09:16 AM PDT

I'm looking at spending around $800. I basically don't want to do any gaming on it so ideally no gamer laptops, but if it could run civ 6 that would be cool. I've seen some refurbished laptops that seem like a great fit but for whatever reason I've been weary of refurbished stuff so if you could also convince me that I'm being irrational that would be great too. Edit: additionally how far back, as far as cpu generations, is safe to go?

Was considering a macbook air but really unsure if a laptop of that price would be wasted on me? Literally just need good storage, able to run sibelius, maybe run youtube or netflix? Oh and if i could plug in earphones and a mouse that would be brilliant!

    Lightweight Composer Laptop

    Posted: 30 May 2022 05:23 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a techphobe and need help with a new laptop. I'm a software based composer and wanted a laptop that's lightweight enough for my to easily carry around with me to make me more productive- even if it's just writing in bed. Specs and RAM and all that stuff is a foreign language to me so apologies if I'm not the most helpful. I just have a basic idea of what I'm after

Truthfully all I'd need it for is Sibelius, some storage and maybe the odd Youtube/Netflix use? Nothing hardcore.

I don't use DAW or samples etc as that's too much for me to wrap my head around. Just Sibelius.

I was looking into the macbook air for how slim it is but wondered if I'd use it enough to offset the cost? I used a friend's for a while and recall struggling to get my head around how the keyboard works compared to regular laptops/desktops. I did have a Lenovo ThinkPad for a while but it was just so heavy and bulky!

Any suggestions would be a huge help! Thanks!
