    Simple Questions - April 06, 2022

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 09:00 PM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Do a Little Research Before You Buy that Cheap Case

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 07:02 AM PDT

I have no doubt a thread like this has existed before, and we could all say the same thing about each and every component in our PC's, but I recently learned the hard way that simply sorting by price is not the way to go when it comes to our hobby, and I hope you'll learn from my mistake.

A friend of mine contacted me a few weeks ago and told me they had come into some money, and at the same time let me know that their current pre-built gaming PC was on it's last legs. They asked if I would help them pick out the parts, and then build a new PC for them. How could I say no to that?! We got together, used PCPartPicker to choose which parts they wanted, and ordered them that same day.

For their case, I told them to go with a mesh/high-airflow model, as good airflow is essential to any computer, and a lot of these glass/acrylic/solid front cases worry me in regards to how "breathable" they really are. I found one that was in their budget, yet from a brand I didn't recognize, but after watching some YouTube videos and reading reviews on it, I felt it was a great choice. Plus, it already had four 120MM RGB fans installed, so that was a nice bonus.

Unfortunately, this case wouldn't ship out for at least two weeks, and all of their other parts had shipped out, so we got back together and found, what I thought, was a very comparable case, but again from a manufacturer I wasn't familiar with. It also had four 120MM RGB fans already pre-installed. Surely it'd be just as good, right?

Y'all know I wouldn't be posting here if that had been true. In short, I should have never picked this case.

It arrived on time with the other parts, but as soon as it was removed from the box, I could tell it had that thin, cheap metal build. Those four RGB fans? All powered by molex. Not even SATA, molex. They can't be turned off, and the RGB can't be controlled. Not a single dust filter to be found on any of the intakes. The PCI-E brackets on the back had to be snapped out, and can't be put back in once they're removed. While it technically was a mid-tower case, the standard ATX motherboard we picked out, an MSI B560 board, just BARELY, and I mean BARELY, fit. To the point where I thought it was touching the case, and had to squint to see there was a very tiny gap between the board and the top and bottom of the case itself. There was no cutout for the CPU power cable, so I had to route that over the top of the motherboard, and hide it as best as I could. The case could technically take two more 120MM fans at the top, but due to the lack of space between the motherboard and the case, I could only get one to fit. Trying to work on anything inside this case was quite an ordeal.

It wasn't a complete waste. The PSU fit fine, my friend is very happy with the build, and loves all the RGB, but still, I feel really bad. Had I encouraged them to spend just a little more money, we could have gotten a case from a well-known manufacturer that would have been way easier to work inside of, had better cable management, and had actual RGB controls.

For those of you ready to build your first PC, or are working on your next build, please buy a case from a reputable brand. Not from a manufacturer that, when a Google search is performed, you can only find online retail listings, and all the manuals and online interactions use poorly translated English. The savings just aren't worth the hassle. And for those of you wanting to build inside of a mini-tower or smaller case, you are a braver soul than I could ever hope to be.

(I'd be happy to share a link to both of the cases I'm talking about in this post in the comments section if that's allowed. I didn't feel it was right to put that here in the main post.)

TL;DR: Invest in a computer case from an actual namebrand PC component manufacturer, and don't be a dumb car like me, driving over dollars to save pennies.

If you bought a GPU recently, make sure you keep checking the price where you bought it

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 03:04 PM PDT

I bought a 6900xt from Best Buy recently, and today I saw it for $200 less. I immediately contacted Best Buy, and they credited back the difference. It is a good idea to keep checking the price from the site you purchased regularly. Even if you are out of the "normal" price-match window, they would rather give you the credit than have you return the product.

How much did your full setup cost?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 07:42 AM PDT

I'm building my first PC and it seems hard to build something "good" in todays market without spending a good chunk of change. I've been scouting deals and cutting back where I can, but all together I think my full setup including peripherals is going to cost about $1850

Just wondering what other people are spending so I can feel good about myself or also feel bad about myself

is it that bad to buy a used SSD?

I'm thinking about buying a used intel 240gb nvme ssd for $20 (Free shipping), since the cheapest new nvme ssd that is at least 240gb is $31, and I have a pretty limited budget.

is there anything wrong with this?

I built a secondary PC that I leave at my University for breaks because I have to take a train when I go back home. I haven't been using this University PC for long, however, I have noticed that it has some major problems.

    1. The computer completely freezes up and the audio goes choppy when I share screen on Discord. I've researched this problem on it's own, turned hardware acceleration off, etc. and it has done nothing to aid the problem. My main PC at home doesn't have any problem like this despite having all those Discord settings on.
    2. Whenever something is plugged into the front USB port, and the PC goes underload, the rest of the computer's USBs frequently disconnect and reconnect, and won't stop until the thing plugged into that front USB is unplugged.
    3. When I'm doing work in Photoshop, and I go to zoom in and out of the canvas, if I'm watching a YouTube video, the audio on the YouTube video will cut out as soon as I begin zooming into the project.

I'm thinking all these problems are connected considering the nature of them, and the fact that I have a similar build at home that has none of these problems has to mean it's some hardware problem, right?

Should I Wait To Find a 3060Ti at close to MSRP or Get a 6700XT From AMD Direct Buy?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 01:01 PM PDT

I'm building a new PC from scratch for the first time and I'm pretty much just waiting on getting a GPU to get the whole project moving. I thought I was set on a 3060Ti but trying for AMD direct tomorrow morning is starting to tempt me. I will be using the PC for gaming (mostly Sim Racing) and for business major schoolwork. I live 4 hours away from where I go to school and so I would like to build when I am home on break (either during Easter weekend or the first two weeks of summer), so I'm open to waiting for a 3060Ti. Thoughts?

Will a lot 12400f and a 3060 ti be able to play 1440p above 100 frames on most games?

    RTX 2060 and 1440p gaming.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 05:07 PM PDT

hey all, im currently in a bit of a pickle when it comes to monitors, i recently purchased a 1080p monitor for competitive games. However I only take full advantage of the monitor in a select few games. Now i started to get back into other games most notably Destiny 2 and dont make much use of the 280hz as im averaging just over half of that. Since i can return this monitor as im still in my trying out phase i was thinking of trying a 1440p 144hz, but my question is a 2060 capable of having decent frames at 1440p?

if anyone has a 1440p monitor and 2060 what are your experiences like? id love to hear about it.

My current setup is Ryzen 5 5600x, 2060, 16 GB of ram.

Thoughts on be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower Case with current build

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 04:44 PM PDT

Hey all, just a quick question with a lil info first.

My boyfriend and I just recently finished his build and we decided it was time for me to start buying parts for mine. 80% of my build is the same as his and seeing as his PC has been running smoothly so far I'm pretty confident in the choices.

    Build

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7GHz 6-Core

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM

Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming (WI-FI) ATX AM4

    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB DDR4-3200 CL16

    SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB M.2

GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8GB

    PSU: EVGA GQ 750 W 80+ Gold Semi-Modular

Case: be Quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower

I've already purchased the GPU & CPU. The only thing I'm concerned about is the case I've chosen and whether or not the fans it comes with are any good / how the airflow is. I chose the be quiet! Pure Base 500 ATX Mid Tower. It comes with 2 fans already and pcpartpicker says everything is compatible which is fun, I'm just not sure with how large the GPU is along with the larger CPU cooler if it's going to have proper airflow.

My boyfriend's PC runs amazingly with just the CPU cooler and the 2 fans his case came with, but I'm unsure of how well these case fans will do.

    So the question is:

    1. Is the case suitable enough to provide good airflow with just the fans it comes with + the CPU cooler? If not, which fans would you recommend adding and how many?
    2. If I should get a different case altogether, which do you recommend that's white, pretty minimalistic (i.e. no dramatic designs), and under $150?

I'm also open to slightly higher priced things. Since performance is my main concern, with how much I'm spending I want to make sure I can get good/full use out of what I'm buying without overheating my system. Thanks!

    Games won't display on PC

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 04:41 PM PDT

When trying to play games on my PC some won't display at all, the screen will turn black and just show that my monitor is on the display port. They display while not in fullscreen but it is only some games that won't work, I have the game Control and that one works perfectly fine but others such as Destiny and Mortal Kombat 11 won't display in fullscreen. I honestly do not know what the problem is and would like some help.

Reducing build cost so I can buy Rx6600

Reducing build cost so I can buy Rx6600

After I read some comments/suggestions with my previous post, I squeezed my budget in other component so I can afford an rx6600.

One thing that bothers me is if I really need a 144hz screen or just stick with 75hz. I have an extra budget for 144hz but not sure if Ill use it for the monitor or just use it with other parts.

My semi final build for my slightly tight budget. (Php 60,000/$1150

    CPU Cpu: 12100F (will use stock cooler) |Php 6,000| Gpu: Gigabyte Rx6600 8gb |Php 24,000| Ram:2x8gb Tdelta classic 3200 |Php 3,700| Mobo: Msi pro b660m a drr4 |Php 7,900| (I picked this mobo from a previous suggestion) Storage: 500gb kingston m2 |Php 2,600| Psu: coolermaster 650w 80+bronze |Php 3,400| Ups: Awp 650va |Php 1,300|

    PERIPHERALS case: rakk anyag |Php 1,000| mouse and keyboard: lologitech mk120 |Php 600| speakers: logitech z190 |Php 500| monitor: 23" 75hz Nvision |Php 5,200|

Total build cost: Php 56,200 // $1080 (can increase budget up to Php 60,000+ // $1200 if necessary)

If 75hz is enough maybe this will be my final build. I'm just a casual gamer but I just want the best value with my budget. Maybe ill just add more budget with my peripherals, cpu cooler, cpu case for aesthetics. Thanks for your ideas.

    Fps issues with capable hardware

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 04:00 PM PDT

I recently built a custom pc with a rx 3700 tx and a intel i9 12900k with around 24gb ram. However, when I launch titles such as fallout 4 I get struck with 5 fps even in the menu screen. I'm far above the required specs yet the issues persist.

Side note: When I check the diagnostic tool for vram it says I have 0 dedicated video ram nor does it detect my gpu, instead it recognizes a integral intel uhd driver.
