Search Highlights – New graphic/icon in your search bar Posted: 28 Apr 2022 09:24 AM PDT Microsoft recently introduced a new feature on Windows 10 and 11 called Search Highlights. The Search Highlights show things like trending searches and other events going on such as holidays and sporting events. On Windows 10 this is more noticeable as if you have the search bar enabled, it will now have an icon at the end. Windows 10 Search Bar - https://i.imgur.com/cI9FhuO.png Windows 11 Search Menu - https://i.imgur.com/pYcNw6I.png The Windows 10 Search Menu looks similar to the Windows 11 one. If you do not want this new feature, it is easy for you to disable.• On Windows 11, open the Settings App. From there select Privacy & Security, then Search Permissions. Under the More Settings section will be a toggle for Show Search Highlights, simply toggle that off. • On Windows 10, right click or long press on your search bar, then pick Search, then uncheck Show Search Highlights. Done! More advanced users can also use the Registry to disable it. The key is located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SearchSettings and you should see "IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled". If not, right click or long press in here and create a new 32 bit DWORD value and name it IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled and for the value we will set it to 0 to disable, or 1 to enable. You can run this from the Command Prompt as administrator to disable the feature:
If you change the /d 0 to /d 1 it will re-enable it. Here is what the search menu looks like once disabled: https://i.imgur.com/wILIk9G.png [link] [comments]

Why has microsoft removed the built in songs fro Windows 8 and later? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 06:14 AM PDT I really loved highway blues back in XP, and kalimba back in 7. Why did they remove it? [link] [comments]
Why is it that "Windows just works" out of the box, on every single PC, and Linux is a hit or miss? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:11 AM PDT Every so often, someone will post, "Oh, I just installed Ubuntu/Manjaro, blah blah on my PC, and such and such doesn't work.. or my fan is too loud... or the system is unstable in one way or another.." and others will respond by saying: "Oh! That's weirddddd... Runs perfectly for me!" And that pretty much encapsulates Linux world... People for whom it ruins beautifully, and for those that have to do some kind of wrangling and tweaking to get it to "work right." What are some technical reasons behind this? [link] [comments]

Audio Device Priority in Windows 11 Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:11 PM PDT I'm wondering if there's a way, either in Windows or with a third party application, to manage the device priority of my audio devices. What I want is basically a priority order. I have speakers and to sets of headphones (one wired, one wireless) and I use each for different things. What I want is to be able to say "By default, use my wireless headset if you can. If that's missing, use my wired headset. If that's missing, use my speakers". This works fine for two devices (Headphones as the "Default", and when they're unplugged the PC uses my speakers) but the addition of the wireless headset has caused me to manually set which device to use every time I want to switch. Anyone know of a better way? [link] [comments]

Is there a way to unstack app icons in the taskbar in Windows 11? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:48 AM PDT Hello, hoping to know if anyone knows a way to unstack the app icons in the taskbar in Windows 11. Normally, when you open several windows of the same application, these are grouped together into an icon stack, which looks like this (the Brave browser application in this example). I'd like to have the icons unstacked, like this. I managed to achieve this by using ExplorerPatcher and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. While this is ok, it's somewhat buggy and often times some icons from a different virtual desktop appear in a random order. My use case is the following:
The main reason I want something like this is cause I find it a bit slow and difficult to get back to a particular window, as I need to mouse over the app icon and guess the correct window from the small preview thumbnail. It is much faster to pick the correct window by simply clicking the icon right away (assuming I remember the position of the window, of course). Does anyone know any other way to achieve this? Natively or otherwise. I am considering downgrading back to Windows 10, but before I do that, I was wondering if perhaps there's an alternative I can try first. The "Never Combine" option from Windows 10 is not what I want, cause it makes each window cover a larger section of the taskbar, eventually saturating it entirely. Any tips or clues are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Workplace or School account - Task manager Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:14 AM PDT Hello all, Was just on task manager wanting to close a frozen chrome tab and I noticed in background processes for a very brief and short moment that "Workplace or school account" popup and then dissappear within a blink of an eye. It had the Microsoft icon next to it as well. My PC is not connected to any workplace or school account just to clarify. Does anyone know what this is? I assume it's just random windows stuff popping up and disappearing again but just wanted to check. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Should I use my current Windows Millennium Edition tower as a more powerful Windows 3.1 machine? Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:24 AM PDT After looking at the costs of a used Windows 3.1 machine, it's quite a bit, while I can install 3.1 from just the floppy disk drive, which is quite a breeze! My machine holds both a 80 GB HDD, and 128 MB RAM. [link] [comments]
Options for an indicator for which virtual desktop you are on Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:52 AM PDT I want a little indicator in the taskbar showing which virtual desktop I am on. I have found two possible options: 1) An app in the Microsoft store claiming to do this, I haven't tried it yet, has anyone tried it? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/virtual-desktop-indicator/9nhcl1xqwxf1#activetab=pivot:overviewtab. There's no reviews or anything and I can't find a page for the developer (Mara apps / Ante Marić) so I'm a little reluctant to go ahead and install. 2) On github, this works briefly for me but then will crash (there's an open issue for this) https://github.com/zgdump/windows-virtualdesktopindicator [link] [comments] |
