    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

Hearthstone at a decent framerate, I don't really play many high end games

Want 16 gb ram, 256 or 512 gb SD. Win10 OS for now, would like to go up to win11 someday but I don't think the OS is finished yet.

Can somebody help identify this Lenovo Legion Sku?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:12 PM PDT

Image can be seen here but I've been scanning Lenovo's current lineup and can't fine one with the same lid-decal design and rear vents (unless this model is simply discontinued).

If anybody can help identify this as being either a Legion 5 or Legion 7 I'd greatly appreciate it.

In need of laptop for engineering program

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 07:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
My maximum price would probably be $2000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Good performance and battery life since I will have to be using it for most of the day. I also want the computer to be able to last me for a good amount of time before I have to replace it. Something like a touchscreen would be nice, but it is a much lower priority
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will have to use programs such as Matlab, NX, and SolidWorks. If it helps more, my program recommends getting a laptop containing a dedicated graphics card with at least 4GB of VRAM.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
My school has certain specs that the laptop must meet or exceed. These include A) intel i7/ryzen 7 or higher processor B)16GB of RAM and C) at least 500GB of storage (SSD strongly recommended).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
In my university subreddit, I have seen many people suggest to others to get some form of gaming laptop because they contain the dedicated graphics card that we need to run the programs smoothly. I would be completely fine with getting one, but I will also be using this computer in a professional setting so I do not want any flashy LED lights or colors. I also cannot get any kind of Mac because they are not compatible with the engineering software. Any help would be appreciated!

buying a new laptop, need advice (2 in 1 laptop)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:19 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    1700$

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No, not really.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1 is what I'm looking form, performance and quality are main factors I guess for someone paying that amount?

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm moving from my gaming laptop because it's thick honestly, not that I want something very thin, but something reasonable.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

    15.6"

    -

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run

AutoCAD, probably will game once a month or so. I use softwares such as ETABS and SAP2000 which are used for designing structures.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If I do, it'll be Valorant.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen, fingerprint reader, good build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've always bought gaming laptops, however since I'm completing my grad studies, I'm leaning towards a 2 in 1 laptop.

I've read about the Samsung Book 2 Pro 360, but seen people complaining about the screen resolution for the price.

I've also seen the Dell inspiron 7000 2-in-1, for some reason, the Dell at 32G RAM has a price of 1629$ (over Amazon) while the Samsung has the same price at 16G of RAM.

    The dell screen is QHD.

Can someone help me out with the decision? I'm also open to other suggestions.

Suggest a laptop with great performance, battery life, portable and great after sale service under 2500USD.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:55 PM PDT

I need a work laptop. I am a full stack dev and I will be doing 3d rendering, video editing also planning on doing masters in machine learning. So looking for laptop with great performance, 16gb ram (upgradable) or 32gb soldered would be ok, portable ,great battery life, great after sale service.

Problem is a lot of laptops are not available right now even the available laptops will take 2 months to arrive.Since I want great after sale service this excludes Asus,MSI,acer, gigabyte.

There are some that are available and delivery in 2-3 weeks. Below are the laptops that available right now. Need laptop by May 20

Alienware m15 r7- great after sale service, great performance but not portable and bad battery life.

Dell xps 17 2022 with 3060,32gb ram - not portable but everything else is fine but Costs 2699$ + tax.

Dell xps 15 2022-is good and also cheaper but comes with 3050.

Alienware x14 32gb is not available right now it will take 2 months to arrive. I would've picked this if it's available.

Only 32gb Apple MacBook Pro available costs 2899+ tax. 16gb ones are available but ram is soldered so can't upgrade.

Lenovo legion 7 2021 with 32gb, ryzen 9, 3080 available for 1800$ but too bulky.

Asus g14/15 are great but bad after sale service.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I like a laptop with a little bit of weight but it's not too important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14-16 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

looking for cheap gaming laptop for running older games.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:27 PM PDT

Been pulling my hair out trying to re-install Bootcamp for ages with no luck and decided it's probably better to finally just bite the bullet and get a gaming laptop to relive most of my favorite games from my childhood. Don't want anything particularly fancy, just something light and budget friendly that won't have any problems running older games with full mod support. Specifically have been wanting to do Empire At War, BFME 1 and 2, LOTR: The Third Age, and SWTOR. Thanks.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Nope.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good screen is needed for watching multimedia content (I am not sure what the best size is because I haven't used laptops much to know for sure ). A good battery would also be appreciated . Weight isn't a problem , it should be durable. I don't care about touch screens , 2-in-1 , and what not..

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not necessary if it means sacrificing performance .

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming , if any then it would visual novels and other light stuff like into the breach , the binding of isaac ...etc. Using Chrome would be heavy (many tabs at the same time) , also MS office programs and Adobe programs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

It doesn't matter much , but just in case ; the more the merrier.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build is necessary , a good keyboard too but that's it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am open to all suggestions as long is it is withing the budget. I am open to buying an expensive pc if that means means it will be future proof

A gift for my father - no budget

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:06 PM PDT

Hi! I have a father who is 70 years old and still works too hard; everyday. He's using an old dell 17 inch heavy beast and he edits photos everyday on it (color and clarity and having a big hard drive for his million photos is important).

I want to buy him something nice. He has given me everything and I just want to do something that will make him happy. No budget, just whatever makes logical sense.

17 inches, good for photo editing on adobe, good speed, comfortable, and a great screen. I want him to enjoy using it.

I was also thinking about pairing this with a doc, monitor, and keyboard? That should cost an additional…. Thousand bucks or so?

Is the dell XPS 17 a good choice ? Is it a good time to buy it, or are there sales coming up in like 2 weeks that would make me a dummy for buying it now?

Thanks in advance for any help and or suggestions!

EDIT: here's the form that I was told I should fill out!!

In search of the right laptop with excellent battery life

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 06:09 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

United States, Puerto Rico (most US sites ship here)

Budget is $1500 maximum, but should be closer to $1000 if possible, can also apply education discount for sites that support it.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Maybe, but new would be preferred.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

As the title mentions, battery life is one of my main concerns, as I've been disappointed with the battery life of my last few computers. If I could have battery life like that of my Tab S7 or an iPad it would be incredible. I don't care that much about build quality, and I expect most modern CPUs to have the performance needed for my tasks. A 2-in-1 laptop with pen support would be nice but is optional, as my Tab S7 can serve that function.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Fine with a little extra weight or thickness if needed.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not really, but if that screen could be OLED that would be amazing, as the ones I've seen in person look incredible.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly school work, I plan to get into software engineering so it should be capable of programming and compiling programs, maybe the ability to run basic machine learning in case they require it. As I have a 3D printer I tend to do some basic CAD work but not much.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't really play many games but if I do then it's likely something lightweight like say CS:GO or Minecraft. I can always lower the resolution or settings if a heavy game demands it.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Some form of biometric authentication would be nice, like Windows Hello face scan or a fingerprint reader.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been doing some research on my own, and the one laptop that always comes up to me is the M1 Macbook Air, but I do not know if it really is the right fit for me, mainly because of the operating system. Another thing I've been seeing is the new Ryzen 6800U chip, which has great efficiency and an iGPU equivalent to the GTX 1050 on my current desktop, but I haven't seen any computers with that CPU yet. I've always heard that Intel laptops have worse battery life than AMD laptops, but is that really true? Also debating if getting a laptop with a dGPU is worth it or not, as adding one will decrease the battery life even further.

Please let me know your thoughts, to help me decide once and for all what should I get.

Traveler doing heavy excel work, budget $600 USD

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:33 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600 max

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes, I frequent Ebay.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life, build quality, and performance.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I will be using this as I travel, so it can only help.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Bigger than 12 inches, smaller than 18 inches. I do hope to get a 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nope. But I will be doing some heavy Excel work, so probably will need 16GB RAM minimum.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I will be typing a lot and use the trackpad all the time. I will also obviously be looking at the screen all the time, so it shouldn't kill my eyes.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm not sure whether older laptops with dual core processors are still viable for heavy excel work (multiple power queries and +500k lines of data). So, I'm open to disagreements to my preferences above.

I should add that, since Mac Office doesn't support some vital features of the Windows version of Microsoft Excel, Macbooks are sadly out of the equation. I have considered looking for intel-based macbooks (+bootcamp), but the prices are ridiculous for 4+ year-old macbooks for the performance.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. - No budget, just give get me a good computer

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • This probably makes it less reliable, right? so... no?

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    - If I drop it many times (I probably will) it won't break + no hinge problems. Don't care about battery life since it will always be plugged in

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Don't care

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Around 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • just gaming: League of Legends (almost exclusively), Skyrim, Elden Ring
    • NICE AND STEADY FPS PLEASE 100+ FPS

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Keyboard with back light, Keyboard with standard button layout (Not a small backspace button)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I just want a computer that will last a LONG time and can play my games. I don't want it to break if I drop it by accident and the hinges wont die either. I don't care what the price is, I'm tired of buying bullshit laptops

Laptop for IT field work and lite Ableton

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:40 PM PDT

I haven't purchased a personal laptop in over 10 years. The landscape has changed and I need guidance.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    <$1000 USD, ideally something lower

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    It depends

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is important, want at least 8 hours. Performance, then build quality. 2-in-1 and stylus is very interesting but not required

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Ideal weight is less than 5.5 lbs. I'm using the laptop primarily for IT field work.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6" maximum if its thin.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Windows 10/11.

Aside from work stuff, I'll be using Ableton so I want at least 16 GB RAM. A minimal requirement is Intel® Core™ i5 processor or an AMD multi-core processor. Doesn't have to run Ableton top of the line, I'll be using it in more of a bare bones way (won't be loading tons of VSTs).

It won't be my primary DAW workstation as I have a powerful desktop PC.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Gaming is a minor and tertiary concern. (Love me some Age of Empires 2 though)

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard essential, don't need a backlight. Need reliable build quality as this will be bumping around in my bag on trains and buses. Would like an ethernet/ RJ-45 port but it's not a dealbreaker as I do want a lighter, thinner laptop.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Required to have Bluetooth to connect devices.

    Strong WiFi.

Graphics card not a big deal, will not be gaming on the laptop.

I like a quiet laptop and prefer fewer fans, hence looking to avoid any sort of workhouse GPU

Want SSD HD, 512 GB maximum, 256 GB minimum.

    Want 3.5 mm audio jack

Again, at least 16 GB RAM. I probably won't do upgrades so I'd rather pay up front and future-proof now. I expect to use the laptop for at least 4-5 years.

At least two USB ports, hopefully more

USB-C sounds nice but not a must

    Minimum 1366x768 display resolution

Would like a non-bulky, lightweight charger cable

Want OK-to-decent webcam, mic, and speakers. Not essential.

I already own carrying cases and peripherals. I don't like adding hubs and accessories, would like everything to be on-board/integrated. Only exception I'll make is for a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.

I've enjoyed the various Lenovo models I've used in past jobs.

For programming + testing + design

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 12:43 AM PDT

Need laptop for programming (web development) while also being able to run an automation tool (cypress) comfortably.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      In INR — 60-70k budget.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Will value speed and ability to not freeze with automation tool (cypress) open.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too specific about this, should be okay to carry around without too much of a hassle even though I don't do much of this.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15, but if I have to compromise on the screen size because of all my other specs matching then 14.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photoshop, Adobe XD, Figma mostly. Want to do a little bit of video editing, but this isn't a priority.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not into gaming, but need good rendering of my design projects.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Should be reliable, I'll be using it for about 8-9 hours everyday. Don't want a touch screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Originally wanted to get a 16Gb RAM spec with 512 SSD and Intel XE graphics, but not sure if the graphics would be enough for my design work. Can go for a 8GB RAM and NVIDEA graphics card, but worried that will slow down my system in regular usage — I use a testing tool regularly and lately it has been eating up my RAM. More focus is on programming, will be running a Linux OS in dual mode.

M1 2020 MacBook Air vs M1 2020 13 inch MacBook Pro for new college student who's majoring in graphic design?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:46 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking to gift someone a new laptop as they will start college in August.

Anyway, they wi major in graphic design and does video editing and motion graphics on the side. In terms of budget, my budget is $1100 or so. I work at a university so I get an EDU discount at the Apple store. What fits my budget is the 2020 M1 MacBook Air or the 2020 M1 13" MacBook Pro. Both are less than $1100 before tax.

    Thanks!

High end Linux buissness laptop - no budget

    Posted: 30 Apr 2022 12:10 AM PDT

I'm looking for a light high performance buissness laptop that can run Linux. I will be commuting and traveling with it and using it to run compilers, databases and browsers. No budget limit. Will install the OS myself Minimum of 32gb ram

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Will buy in Germany/EU, no limit

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Most important is performance and weight/size.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness doesn't matter, should be light weight for commute and travel.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14 or 15

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No cad, no games. Gpu is irrelevant. Will run compilers and memory hungry databases. So needs strong CPU and as much ram as possible.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Needs to work with Linux and the major hardware should be supported. Touch screen and finger print do not matter. Robustness is a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently have my eye on the X1 carbon gen 10 but initial reviews are underwhelming in terms of brightness and battery life.
