A Note to My Former Self: Tips for the First Few Jobs Posted: 30 Apr 2022 04:17 AM PDT I wanted to add some advice here that would have helped me 15 years ago. Just recently I switched jobs and got a great reminder of how little "most companies" care about their employees. 1) Always keep your resume up to date This not only means jobs, certs, skills, hobbies but even more importantly adding projects or major responsibilities as they are completed/added at your current job. 2) Be aware of the job market This can easily be done by adding email updates for job searches using Google job search or indeed for example. 3) Keep a list of work accomplishments as well as major red flags (things that don't sit right with you) This will help build your resume and help you decide if a new offer is good for you. 4) Keep a list of your salary progression with a projection in a year based on current inflation This will give you a good base number for salary when job hunting. You can also just add 15-20% to your current salary though that may hurt if you are very underpaid. 5) Continue learning something on your own time You don't need to get 20 certs per year and the cert game can be overwhelming and confusing. Find something that interests you and learn that at your own pace. 6) Don't be afraid or feel bad for actively searching and interviewing for jobs at most every three years It's unfortunate, though many here can confirm, you will normally gain more salary increases and job title growth by job hopping 3 times over 10 years vs. working at one place for 10 years. 7) Don't tell your employer what your previous jobs paid If it's asked for on an application, skip it or cross it out. You don't have to tell them. I recently moved jobs and it was a great move for many reasons. My previous employer has had a tough time finding a replacement and posted my job multiple times. Two interesting things to note: 1) They have changed the title to a more senior title which represents the job best. I asked for this title and never got it. When I pushed I was met with a response that the manager didn't know. Red flag! They know now! 2) The salary range posted is accurate for the market. Unfortunately the low end of that range is 15k more than I started at and the high end, well I would have liked to have been there lol. Red flag! They had the money, they all have the money, it's just a matter of who gets it. I could have and should have negotiated a higher starting salary. By no means is this a definitive list or the best list. If anyone else has some tips that would have helped your former self, please share them as well. Thanks for this sub, it has helped me open my eyes and move up in my career. Edited: for formatting. [link] [comments] |
After a year of searching, I landed my dream job at 19! Posted: 30 Apr 2022 03:14 AM PDT Hi everyone, thank you ALL for your amazing advice, after a year and a half of searching I've finally landed an amazing job with amazing pay and great benefits! (including private healthcare??!!) There's no cons at all, really one of those too-good-to-be-true jobs. I'll be working in a gorgeous school as a support engineer with my own office!! everyone is lovely and excited for me to start. I almost gave up a few times but when I landed this I almost cried lol. I'm so chuffed but I couldn't have done it without everyone's help. Thank you. Now I can finally get my own place! [link] [comments] |
IT jobs with little human interaction, suggestions and advice needed Posted: 30 Apr 2022 04:46 AM PDT Hi IT colleagues, I've been a Retail IT Manager for an International company for the past decade. Prior, I managed a help desk (application support). I'm exhausted from the constant fire quelling, "emergencies" from the SU community, toxic, psycho coworkers and relentless, mentally draining interactions. Can anyone suggest positions that require little human interaction? I was thinking maybe data entry (not sure if that's even a thing now) or something similar to the analyst in the movie Kimi or the macro data refinement positions in Severence. My salary is well over six figures, but I'm definitely willing to make a salary and title adjustment for my well being. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:51 PM PDT I was on the phone for 30 minutes trying to help a user with the VPN. A senior tech says well you've tried all the major troubleshooting steps, maybe just uninstall the software and reinstall. So I do that, nothing works. And I'll likely never be told what the solution was. I think these senior techs just love keeping things from me. They enjoy watching me fail. I've only been here 3, almost 4 months and I'm already sick and tired of this shit. But I'm sick and tired of the technicians, not the users. The users are actually pretty great and I feel so bad when I fail them. How common is this in helpdesk? Do senior techs just not give a shit to help new L1/L2 techs? I have no IT background so maybe they resent me. I don't know [link] [comments] |
Roadmap to Network Engineering, anyone? Sharing is caring! Posted: 30 Apr 2022 04:31 AM PDT Care to share some insights on what certs to get what jobs to start with until you build enough experience to be a network engineer? [link] [comments] |
My job may be getting cut. Looking for job application advice. Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:44 PM PDT I've been working at my current company for 5 years, in IT for 4. I'm currently a support engineer. The last few months, there have been A LOT of changes in my dept, and there are heavy rumors going around that IT support may be getting shrunk considerably. I wouldn't be surprised if my company moves to a full cloud support infrastructure (they are currently hybrid), so I think the ultimate goal is to cut local IT support entirely. Although I have an Associate and Bachelor's degree plus certification, all of my IT experience has been with this company. I have non-professional front end web development experience and I enjoy it. I also get to do it a little in my current role. So I do have some examples, from both my job and in my free time. But I've applied for many front-end development jobs already both inside my company and out, and have had no luck. Not even a single call/email back. I've re-written my resume from scratch multiple times, and I've remade my online portfolio from scratch (& coded it all myself). I am wanting to start a a serious job search again, but have no clue how to stand out in job applications. Any advice for an IT support engineer trying to get into the front-end web development world? Or any similar paths? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:01 AM PDT As a pharmacist, I earn close to nothing in Poland. The competition in graphic design is too great, and since I'm not talented, I gave up on it. I have a lot of experience in building and repairing computers. Generally, I'm pretty passionate about technology, so I know a lot about many related things. I plan to move abroad (I don't know where yet, preferably somewhere where English is the primary language) when I polish my English a bit. I'm 26 if that's important. Every advice would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Do you ever look and your resume and stare in disbelief? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:35 AM PDT I'm currently employed, but polishing up my resume in case there's something interesting out there. As I'm filling out my resume, I'm getting a huge boost of confidence. I don't really stop to think about my work activities from an outside perspective, so everything seems dull and routine. As I'm populating my experience and skills, I'm starting to appreciate all the muck I've had to swim through to get to where I am. All of the different compliance audits and responsibilities. All of the special projects that I've headed through the years. I honestly feel like I'm a normal IT pro, but my resume is really making me feel better about my life choices. There's no real point to this post other than to remind you that you probably do a lot more than you realize. This industry has a way of grinding people down, but the work we do is important. Back to devoid. [link] [comments] |
What are some programming languages to know as an IT Manager? Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:27 AM PDT Often in management job offerings I see a lot of SQL and sometimes Python. For those of you who are in management which software/programming languages do you recommend? [link] [comments] |

What are some unwritten rules about working from home? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 03:54 AM PDT Like for example during work hours (excluding lunch break) I go to take a 15min shower, when I come back I find out that I missed a meeting or maybe a client call, what can I tell my supervisor? or maybe take a power nap to get refreshed. Are we supposed to sit in front of the pc for 8hours a day stuck to our seats trying to be available during our work hours? While working on site there is at least the chance to go for a walk, talk to colleagues, company provided activities etc... This is my first serious job and it's remote so I have no experience. What are other "unwritten rules" that I should know about working from home that you think could be good advice? [link] [comments] |
Computacenter Company ( www.computacenter.com ) - pros/cons Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:50 AM PDT Hello everyone, recently I got offer to start working for Computacenter in Germany in Networking and Security area. Does anyone have any experience working in this company? Is it a good move to go for a job there? What are pros and cons you can think about? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:59 AM PDT Hello, recently I had a job offer rescinded cuz I have a felony even tho I let them know about it and didn't lie. Anyways I am going to school for it (still really new not many skills) but how can I get my foot in the door even like a help desk job? I feel so hopeless that I can only work blue collar and nothing wrong with that but that's not me. I really want to get in to IT especially where I can actually have a career. Not just being a construction worker. Again nothing wrong with that but I just would hate my life. Any suggestions would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Need an advise for career parth. Am I downgrading myself? Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:13 AM PDT I'm based in Australia and working as a technical project manager. I have an acquaintance in the U.S and has a start up company as telematics software consulting firm. It's been running for five years and he recommended to interview as a system analyst if I am interested in for an interview. That way I can gain insights and experience for this industry. I used to live in the U.S and always wanted to go back, which is a great opportunity. However, it leads me to a question if the role itself is downgrading myself? [link] [comments] |
For those looking to rise into cyber sec what are some suggestions? Posted: 30 Apr 2022 02:06 AM PDT I've been reading alot about IT recently, I've also been lurking here for a few weeks now. Additionally, if I plan to go for a BS what degree would you recommend to look for cyber sec? I see that WGU offers a specific accredited cyber sec degree, but I'm not so sure about WGU it was just what came up in a google search. Other suggestions were various degrees including CS. Just curious! Thank you very much for taking the time to read and respond. You guys have already helped me so much. [link] [comments] |
Need advice to approach the question about year gap and change in career during interviews Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:50 PM PDT I'm a Mechanical engineering graduate (2018), i got a job in project management (Turbo Charger Manufacturing industry) in the same year and worked their for 8 months and due to family circumstances i had to quit my job in 2019.Unfortunately the pandemic hit just few months after. Like a lot of people it became very hard to find a job. After a year of job searching now i have got an interview for the position of data associate at amazon. Job role includes data annotation and transcribing audio for data analysis. So, i need some advice on how to approach the following interview questions.
I didn't complete any certified courses during this time but I've learned some things, I started using linux, dual booting it with windows and learned a lot about PC hardware also built a custom one for myself and worked on my analytical ability (aptitude and logical reasoning) as i was also preparing for some competitive exams during quarantine. Improved my typing speed as i practiced it a lot. From my previous job I've worked with MS Excel in a regular basis and also other MS Office tools for project management. i know these are basic, just wanted to know whether to mention these in the interview or not it will be great to hear from this community on How to approach this interview. No certifications but new to help desk, should I get the A+? Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:25 PM PDT I've been at my first help desk job for a month now. Luckily landed the job with an associates degree. At this point is an associates worth getting or should I focus on other certs? Ideally I'd like to stay at help desk for at least a year. [link] [comments] |
Possible career path in fintech and how can it continue to grow Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:48 PM PDT What are some possible career paths in Fintech? And how well is the pay for this field? Looking for something other than banking roles [link] [comments] |
New contractor job or FTE at MSP? Decent bump in pay. Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:50 PM PDT Been at my current MSP Tier 1 for about 8 months making 40k. 3 weeks PTO, decent health insurance. Not much WFH, it happens, but not often enough. High work load, not enough employees. New contractor job is 100% remote at $25 an hour. Seems very chill, minimal calls (like maybe 1 a day). And a better schedule. No benefits of course. Doing Tier 2/3 work. My manager came back with 46.5k counter offer and still no promise for an actual hybrid schedule. Funny thing is, a bump in pay was supposed to happen a month ago for 2-3k and never did or was never brought up UNTIL I put in my 2 weeks. So, just for my own sanity and I'm hoping for a confirmation. Should I just go with the contractor job? [link] [comments] |
I AM in need of Guidance regarding certifications. CompTIA Security+, OSCP, UDemy, Google/Coursera. Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:59 PM PDT Background about myself I have worked as an OSINT Analyst for about 3 years previously to Covid, and wanted to get into more hands on cybersecurity specifically Penetration test eventually a Security Analyst role. Since I like to believe I have absolutely no experience in the field but an interest in these positions I have been recommended by many to look into CompTIA or OSCP. I don't have a BA but I would like to extend my resume. There's a lot of certifications out there such as Udemy courses, Google Certs, Coursera and the two recommended to me. What do you think is the most applicable routes I can take? [link] [comments] |
is testout certification worth anything in the IT world Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:46 PM PDT So I'm taking networking using windows for one of my classes that uses testout. I passed the class but I didn't pass the certification test. I was trying to see if taking the certification was even worth it. So my main question is, how much worth does a testout certification will get you. [link] [comments] |
