Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:14 AM PDT Hey everyone! I'm currently running Ubuntu, and just wanted to ask, if I want to switch distro sometime in the future, would i have to reinstall all my steam games etc, or would it migrate over? [link] [comments] |
How do I get away from Windows?! Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:17 PM PDT Hello Linux Gurus! I've been looking to break away from Microsoft/Windows and join the Linux gang. I've installed Ubuntu and played a little with Mint in the past but ultimately I'd lose interest or become frustrated and switch back to Windows. I've used Windows all my life, and it's become the only operating system I'm most proficient with. To make the switch can come off as overwhelming at times, but it's still something I'd like to do. I work as a Jr. Sys admin and it would be handy to learn the essentials of Linux to better my skill set. It's obvious that Linux is much better than Windows when it comes to a number of things; especially server hosting and security. Plus it's open source! You can't beat that. It was recommended that I avoid "Fork" distros such as Elementary, Parrot, Mint, Manjaro, and Pop! (There's so many...) as they take longer to get updates since they're derived from "Main" distros such as Ubuntu, Arch, and Kali. What do you guys think? Which distros/resources would you guys recommend to start this journey? My end goal would to ultimately become proficient enough with Linux to see full reason to make the switch from Windows. How can I go about this without becoming overwhelmed or discouraged? It's like a whole new world to me. I appreciate any advice! [link] [comments] |
Is there an efficient way to identify what is gradually consuming disk space? Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:30 AM PDT I use Gentoo, although this might only be half a Gentoo problem. Just 5 days ago I had at least 24 gigs of space on my ssd, now So currently I just save the output of a du command to a txt file like this: [link] [comments] |
find out when a command started? Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:55 AM PDT often when running commands on large datasets if find myself wondering "when did I start this process? ... I wish i wrote the time down." is there a way to find that out? if not is there a package or a shell that supports time logging? [link] [comments] |
How to fully uninstall KDE from Ubuntu? Posted: 05 Apr 2022 10:50 AM PDT I've been running Ubuntu 21.10 with GNOME for some time, and while I haven't been dissatisfied with GNOME I have recently become interested in trying other environments. I thought KDE looked interesting, and thought I could easily try it and switch back if it wasn't to my liking. So I installed the kde-full package, and skipping a bunch of the explanation around that experience, I am now trying to undo everything done by installing that package. At first I just removed kde-full, but that definitely did not clean up everything, and since then I've been hunting down the packages for all the loose applications and themes KDE has left on my computer. Is there just an easy one command solution to fully and cleanly uninstall KDE? [link] [comments] |
Steam problem: New Steam library folder must be writeable Posted: 05 Apr 2022 03:21 PM PDT Hi all I wanted to add the two ssd disks i have to the Steam library but I can't. It seems to me that there is some problems with rw privileges because I get this error "New Steam library folder must be writeable". I saw there were various editions of this error so step by step I incorporated the various solution to try to fix my problem. What I have done so far is this:
I don't understand what I am doing wrong, I saw there are different solutions to this problem but none applies to mine. I saw here on reddit that another user using mint, set the fstab like this rw,user,exec,umask=000,x-gvfs-show. Must I do the same?I checked on the fstab arch linux wiki page but at the time I understand 1/4th of it XD [link] [comments] |
How does fractional scaling work in Pop_OS? Posted: 04 Apr 2022 10:49 PM PDT |
Posted: 05 Apr 2022 02:16 PM PDT OS: LMDE 4 System: Ryzen 5900X, 64gb RAM, X570 mobo, Brother all in one scanner / laser printer (printing works). It's not just this, but I find many times instructions for applications don't actually say how to run it. This is a good example though, hopefully there's a simple secret I'm missing. So, take NAPS2 for instance. Hands down, best scanning program I've ever used, was a deciding factor in switching to Linux, and now I finally get to install it. https://www.naps2.com/download.html It's got a penguin, huzzah! Download the portable zip and extract the files. Not sure what to do next. OK, go to Getting Started: https://www.naps2.com/doc-getting-started.html Installed mono and those other three packages. Within the mono instructions I made the test file and tried running it, got the described behavior. OK, making progress! And....now what? It says Linux needs to use the portable archive, I double clicked on the NAPS2.Portable.exe (under the Windows instructions), I just get three dot files. So in this case and others, what should be my next step? What's being left out that I need to do to start an application? (Or, if this is borked and you have a recommendation for an amazing scanning program I'm all ears - I need to scan and create PDFs and batch scanned images constantly. NAPS2 was fantastic for this.) Thanks! [link] [comments] |
My raspberry pi crashed during an ext4 move and resize operation. Posted: 05 Apr 2022 02:15 PM PDT As the title says. I had a hard drive connected to a raspberry pi and discovered about 50GB of unallocated storage before the partition I wasn't using. So I tried resizing the ext4 partition overnight and the raspberry pi crashed while the resize was occuring. I tried fsck and testdisk to recover the partition and no dice. I haven't used photorec because I don't have where to store the recovered files. There isn't anything important on the drive (at least nothing I didn't already back up) but I assume all the data is still on the drive just in 2 pieces. Is there any way to recover it? Last step: reinstall arch linux Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:55 AM PDT Hi all I will reset my windows installation and keep it just in case a game or something isn't working on Arch, in the future I will completely get rid of Windows I suppose. Before making the big step there is only one question: I need to move Windows on the slower hardrive and on top of that I need to reinstall Arch Linux because I installed it in the wrong hard disk.
I am a bit scared of destroying somethign [link] [comments] |

Screen goes black when locking or switching to virtual terminal (Linux Mint/Xfce) Posted: 05 Apr 2022 11:13 AM PDT I'm on Linux Mint 20 Xfce. I have no issues starting up or logging in, but whenever I try to either hit the lock button or switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f2, etc.) the screen goes black. I've tried turning up the brightness with the keyboard when this happens, but it does nothing. I've tried Googling it, but I'm just seeing results about changing the desktop brightness, which isn't related. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
New to Linux, having trouble with poor audio quality from Focusrite 2i2 gen 2 interface Posted: 05 Apr 2022 10:57 AM PDT As the topic states, I'm brand new to Linux(Kubuntu 20.04 LTS), and I'm having trouble with poor audio quality from my USB interface. The best was I can describe it is my studio monitors sound like $1 ear buds. I've tried googling around, but having trouble finding a solution as I don't quite understand how audio works in Linux. Use to it just simply just working in Windows. Any help would greatly be appreciated! Edit: I did "lsusb" in terminal and noticed some strange device name conflictions going on. Focusrite is the manufacturer of my USB audio interface I'm having issues, while QuickFire TKL Nkeys is my keyboard, some sort of USB issue going on? GRUB Command screen when booting into any setup usb Posted: 05 Apr 2022 10:08 AM PDT I flashed a Pop!_OS installation iso onto a usb drive and booted into it, and it just pops up a command screen for grub, tried Kali too, same exact thing. [link] [comments] |
Completely change Nautilus on GNOME - system file explorer on apps still default to Nautilus ? Posted: 05 Apr 2022 10:07 AM PDT I have completely removed Nautilus from my GNOME installation and changed it to Nemo and used the following command:
However when opening a "choose file" on a browser or other programs, it opens a window that is exactly like Nautilus. Checking system monitor, there is not a single nautilus process running; there is nothing of Nautilus on the package manager; and killing Nemo processes does not kill the "Nautilus-like" window that opens up. What program does the browser/other software defaults to when exploring files? Is it possible to change this ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:39 AM PDT So I know that appimages are meant to be really simple - just download them, chmod them (I'm using 755, which is probably the safest one I think) and then you're good to go. Except, where do I put the appimage so that it shows up in GNOME's applications panel (and, more importantly, I can open it using rofi searchbar in i3wm). I've looked at the standard file hierarchy and I've tried to understand where system apps are installed, but I can't seem to make sure that it all installs to the right location. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:11 AM PDT Hi, i've got this error massage while my OpenSUSE TW is booting, and next it's entering emergency mode. I'm using Lenovo E14 G1 (20RA-0012PB). I've tried to boot it with older kernel and to reset BIOS settings but it doesn't help at all. Is there any way to fix it, or should I reinstall my OS? image of the error: https://imgur.com/a/C1PWgxL [link] [comments] |
