Internet dropping every 12 minutes and 30 seconds exactly

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:03 PM PDT

For the past 2 or so weeks we've been having frequent ping spikes and sometimes full disconnects. Using a simple internet monitoring tool I discovered that these disconnects happen every 12 minutes and 30 seconds, right on the dot, almost every single time.

Sometimes it's a very bad ping spike, sometimes it's a full disconnect. But the 12 minute and 30 second pattern remains. These disconnects happen across all devices, whether connected to ethernet or wifi.

I've done just about all of the troubleshooting and Youtube videoing possible, and the only next step I can think of is to get in contact with my ISP.

But before I do that, I was wondering if anyone knows of any windows programs or anything that are designed to run or check internet data every 12 minutes and 30 seconds? It could help me find the source of the issue (if its not just bad cable or an internal issue with my ISP)

Edit: I may be thinking too hard about this. I've already confirmed that plugging eth directly into the modem doesn't solve the issue, so its most likely the modem or cable. It's just the 12 minute 30 second pattern that baffles me

    Howdy folks,

I'm delivering free training on the full CompTIA Network+ N10-008 course to help the folks out who need study resources who can't afford to pay for studies. Hopefully this helps some people.

The videos are short and bite sized making it easier to follow and digest the content since it might be a bit overwhelming for some people.

I'm putting the lessons into a playlist on YT which you can access here

TP Link Outdoor AP at Home - Does it need a controller?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 12:28 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking at using this TP-Link N300 outdoor WiFi AP at my partners house. Their garden is quite long and mobile coverage is spotty. I was just going to change the SSID to be the same as the router in the lounge, so this should mean devices hand off without clinging onto the main router if there's overlap? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01N4EGN6H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I've also got an ethernet port on the landing (top of the stairs) ready for another WiFi AP if coverage is spotty upstairs. In the loft we'll have a PoE switch for the other Ethernet Ports around the house.

I'm just unsure if the outdoor AP needs a controller on top of the PoE switch, documentation suggests not but I've no experience with TP-Link Omada.

Personally I'd have considered Ubiquiti for the dream machine but it's a relatively small house, and more than my partner wants to spend and is probs overkill.

Any advice is appreciated, the outdoor AP is on the way. Just want to avoid the situation at their parents house where they have WiFi Network1,2,3,4,5,6 and having to manually reconnect when you move about the house.

How to set up Network configuration for PC to see devices on another router?

How to set up Network configuration for PC to see devices on another router?

My desktop is connected to the main router so it can't interact with network devices on the second router. I need an Oculus Rift that is connected to the Second router to be able to DLNA with the desktop. Any ideas?

My current idea is to set the main router as an access point, but I haven't figured out how to yet. Main router is Verizon's router and the second router is a Netgear NightHawk

Picture below is my network set up.

    Powerline roaming is not seamless

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 02:47 AM PDT

First off, yes I realize Powerline adaptors have a dodgy reputation but it is the easiest solution to get ethernet around my solid brick house.

Now, I have a TP-LINK Powerline that doubles as WIFI. When I pair it with my router and I transition through the house the handover is not fast enough to prevent dropouts (2-3 seconds)

Another annoying issue is the signal strength around the house is never at an obvious changeover point, the routers strength is still 'fair' at the extremes and a lot of the time it does not bother doing the switch.

Is there something I can do to solve both/either of these issues?

I have ordered a newer model router from my ISP that MAY solve the issue if it has stronger signal but failing that would be good to get this setup working

Am I stupid for buying a modem router combo?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 02:05 AM PDT

As the title says am I?

I just recently purchased my first home. (It's a townhouse)… if anyone was curious..

    Anyway!

I bought a new cable modem as the one I had prior was in my opinion not good.

    Motorola - MG8702 32x8 DOCSIS 3.1

    Was the name.

it was decent for two TVs, desktop and video game console, phones, etc. etc. Also to keep in mind my old studio was 500 sq ft

The UI for opening ports and charging stuff for the Motorola was very confusing and difficult, I actually paid someone on Fivver to help me open ports and fix things, and he suggested something that just basically opens all of my ports, which I was somewhat uncomfortable with, lesson learned.

So now with the new place, it's double the size 1100 sq ft I decided to buy NETGEAR - Nighthawk AC3200X..

I also decided to get some Ring cameras two of them. The whole house will also have hue lights, I was gonna hardwire the HueBox to the Night-hawk, but haven't done so yet, I have noticed the downstairs WiFi isn't very good for the console and sometimes the cameras lag, not often but sometimes. Would imagine it would be worst when lights are hooked up.

I was considering running cat5 cable to the downstairs, from the nighthawk. Or buying this thing called MoCA 2.0 Network Adapter instead of running all the cable thru the walls and such…

But that got me thinking if I'm gonna do all this shouldn't I do it right.

Should I return this nighthawk and find a better option so I can get the best performance.

Im not the best with computers or networking. So looking for any advice that can be given.

Internet far faster on a VPN while using new PC? Am I being throttled?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 12:55 AM PDT

So, I got a new PC a while back, it's on the exact same connection as my old one, just unplugged the ethernet cable from my old PC and plugged it into the new one. My old PC had 0 issues with internet speed, but my new PC seems to only have its full connection on select sites/applications.

Most simple example would be testmy.net , where on my connection without my VPN gets roughly 7.8 Mbps. With the VPN turned on to the same location, I get 135.4 Mbps. I see similar results on other sites such as speedtest.net when testing to specific (not all) servers.

Another example would be Steam, when downloading a game on steam, on a good day, I can achieve up to 90 MB/s (not often... but it's nice when I do), which is around what I'm supposed to be getting with our current internet plan. However, when downloading from specific applications or other websites (Native Instruments, or while on something like VRChat for example), it seems to be hard capped at about 1.5 MB/s. When turning on my VPN, the speed on these other services increases exponentially.

For reference sake, I am with an ISP called Shaw Communications (Canadian) on their Fibre+ Gig plan, and using a Fibre+ Gateway (XB6) router. As mentioned, the only difference in my set up was the new PC. I have searched and searched and searched and come up with nothing on what could be causing this, and any fix I have tried has amounted to nothing.

Is it possible that for whatever reason, Shaw would be throttling my new PC but not the old one, if that's even possible? I'm clearly capable of the speed I should be getting (As seen on Steam), but there are a ton of sites/applications that seem limited to 1.5 MB/s now though they weren't on the old PC.

I'm at a complete loss, and just want to know if I should be yelling at Shaw about it or if there's some configuration problem with my new PC.

    TP-Link Archer Ax4400 firmware/ HW version confusion

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 12:24 AM PDT

The bottom of router itself says it's version 1.6 of the AX4400, but logged into the router via chrome is says "Hardware Version: Archer AX4400 v1.0" (I'm in the USA btw)

The firmware installed says: 1.2.0 Build 20211222 rel.74632(5553)

Could a kind soul help clear this up....lol, starting to think someone slapped a version 1.6 sticker on a version 1 and cleverly resealed the box with new plastic. I mean, it's working just fine and had all the plastic to peel from the router lol, I just prefer to know my hardware in and out.

    Internet speed help

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 11:20 PM PDT

I currently live in Japan and live in an apartment block and it came with free internet. The router seems to be a lan line only modem or router (there is no Lan cable). The speeds are quite terrible. At best a few MB a second when I do a speed test. Sometimes it has been as low as 0.2MB second download and upload.

Ive looked at all my settings and tried my best to see if I can change dns servers and ip addresses and everything else. Is there anything I can do to get half decent speed or because its provided will it be capped for everyone and there is nothing I can do about it?

    Rbr750 wifi6 setup suggestions.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 10:15 PM PDT

I have a Orbi rbr750 mesh system. The main purpose I purchased a $500 router is I want to remote play my ps5 and moonlight from my pc. But after few month use I found out I was always connecting as wifi5 instead so I google it and figure out Orbi need to turn on wpa3 to connecting wifi6 . So I change the protocol to wpa3 and half of my home applicants can't connect like gas range, ring doorbell and most important my Sony a80j tv. I can turn on guest network to connect non supported device but I use my TV to streaming Plex . If I connect as guest Plex will turn the TV as indirect so I can't watch high bit rates contents . Any suggestions? Do I need wifi6 actually ? Is that big different ? If i use guest network will that slow down my whole network since it's maintaining two channels all the time ?

[Help] can you specify which mesh node to connect a device?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 10:10 PM PDT

So I have given up and purchased a Nighthawk mesh network for my 2 story home. Only need the primary unit and one satellite. When I connected and added every device to the network I assigned a static IP to all of them.

    Everything is connected and functioning.

Problem is, some devices are much closer to the satellite than the primary node, but they keep connecting to the farther unit. As a result their signal is not as strong when I look at the Nighthawk device manager so they have a low signal.

Is there any way to get devices to connect to a specific node? I've rebooted the mesh devices a few times going my devices will reconnect but it's fairly the same distribution.

Help with AP Layout for new home, and recommended hardware

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:01 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/NaqeEds

I bought a home recently, and am currently working very, very hard to get it functional enough to live in by next month. Lot of layer peeling and hole patching and fixing all the stuff the single previous owner just covered up over 60 years. I'd like to do networking right this time - I've done one long run so far through the outer wall of the living room, on the top right corner of this layout, from the basement to the attic in the crawlspace (and plan to do more, that was just the hard one I did while adding a circuit up there as well).

I'm not worried about the wired side of this network, mainly just the wireless. Assuming I don't want to put one access point in the center of the first floor (the hallway ceiling is not what I'd consider convenient to get a wire to if I can avoid it), were would you recommend placement of 1 (2? 3?) access points? I'm thinking top right of the attic, bottom right of the first floor, and not worry about the basement? Is that overkill? I'm currently using an asus wifi 6 router of some sort in my current home, which reaches everywhere / all 3 floors in that rental except for an office built onto the side of that home. All drywall / wooden stud. And if I do go with multiple access points / some mesh system, are there any recommended that are:

    Wifi 6ePOE capableAnd wall mountable?

I guess the ubiquiti stuff fits these needs, but I'm not doing access control or video cameras or home automation, so I'm thinking that UDM pro is overkill?

Having a issue with my setup

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:54 PM PDT

So recently I bought a ASUS AX 3000 router to supply wifi for just my room. The setup I have is Modem-> Powerline Ethernet Adapter-> Router-> Wifi and Switch in another part of the room for Ethernet. For some reason when I first plug it all in I'm getting 100+ mbps but then randomly it goes down to 7mbps and stays that way till I unplug and replug the Powerline Adapter. Then it works for a little while and goes back down to 7mbps again. Previously it was just the Powerline Adapter to my switch was for my internet and that worked fine 100+ mbps. Any idea what is causing the issue between the adapter and the new router.

Anyone else have constant issues with the mercku wifi hive system

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:35 PM PDT

We have always had constant issues with it (mainly the hives) having to reboot it every 2 weeks. And on top of that the bandwith it provides constantally drops to 2mbps down from 150. They refused to replace the hives but there was a recall on the part that always worked fine for us, the bees. Our isp that upsold them to us refuses to do anything about it either.

Need suggestions on setting up the network for a new home, thanks!

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:24 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Would love to hear suggestions on setting up home network for a 2-floor new home ~5000sft. The info box is in the corner of the home, in a closet (unfavorable in terms of signals), and I will have Gigafiber internet. I plan to buy one of the Asus mesh network routers (Loved Asus ones so much and had rare problems in the past many years)

    • Option 1:
      • Info box: Moderm (Turn off routing?) <--> Asus Wireless Router <--> Switch to connect all 16 CAT6 cables to other locations <--> CAT6 to NAS
      • Location 1 and 2: CAT6 to connect to other Asus router mesh nodes
    • Option 2:
      • Info box: Moderm (Turn on routing) <--> Switch to all CAT6 <--> CAT6 to NAS
      • Location 1: CAT6 to Asus primary router
      • Location 2 and 3: CAT6 to Asus mesh nodes

Option 1 allows Asus router to fully manage the routing, and set up different subnet for primary vs. guest SSIDs, but the asus primary router has to be placed in the corner of the house, which may impact performance?

A friend suggested option 2, but I never used carrier's moderm's own routing feature, and seems like this requires Asus router to create its own subnet, different from the one in switch (from moderm), so don't know if that would be a problem. Good part is that, it allow me to place all the 3 asus nodes in ideal locations.

Ideally I want to all asus nodes in ideal locations, and switch behind asus router to have them in the same subnet.

    Thanks!

How can I get two separate networks to see each other?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 01:19 PM PDT

I'm looking to bridge two independent networks (routers) within the same home.

Quick background: I plan to rent out my house via AirBnb (ish). I need to build a network onsite to connect and manage all my in-home IoT devices (light switches, thermostat, Google devices, etc).

I currently run a UDM Pro (with 5 VLANs). I have a second router, a Nighthawk AC1900, model R7000 (if I can get a hold of a UDR, I would use that...). Both will run behind a Zyxel C3000Z running in Transparent mode. When doing this, both routers will be running their own independent networks, with their own independent external IP addresses. Like this:

    https://imgur.com/a/zyDIc5M

I want to remain on the UDMP network while I manage and migrate my devices to the new Nighthawk network. I will be moving just the in-home devices and everything else (smart plugs, computers, tablets, NAS, etc) will remain on the UDMP and come with me when I move out. I will also be building a separate Home Assistant* specific to this new network.

Is there a way to build a bridge between these two networks so they can see each other? Or, at the very least, allowing the UDMP network to see the Nighthawk network? Maybe a VPN VLAN into the Nighthawk router?

I understand I have to mind subnets. Right now, the UDM runs on 192.168.[1/10/20/30/50/70].x/24. I plan to put the Nighthawk network within 192.168.100.x/24.

Edit: To clear some things up - this is only a temporary setup. I plan to move out of my house and take the UDMP (and other devices), while leaving the Nighthawk and migrated devices on the "new" network. I'm looking for a way to manage two networks via one computer / phone, while making it easy to disconnect (the UDMP) and leave.

    .

*For reference, the intent here is to give tenants access via Google Assistant [via Nabu Casa], not a tablet with HA. HA will only be my [back-end] glue between non-uniform devices.

How do I solve having to reset modem frequently?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:52 PM PDT

I have recently installed Ubiquiti point to point (airMAX lite beam AC5). It works great. The problem lies with my modem though which was provided by our ISP. Our Wi-Fi keeps reading connected but no internet access or something along those lines and it's every few days. It is super annoying because the modem is across the road at a different location, point A (Old farm house). So resetting the modem is really inconvenient. I wonder if I should maybe have my ISP bring out a new modem.

I have a eero 6 at our house, point B, as an access point. Maybe it's possible to just have the airMAX at point A and have the both modem and the access point over here at point b? That would make resetting it painless. I do not need internet/wifi at point A.

Otherwise my thoughts are maybe some settings are set up wrong either with the modem or the access point? I think the P2P stuff is running fine.

Trying to upgrade my WiFi, kind of lost in all the available options, would love some inputs from Reddit

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 12:40 PM PDT

    Hello r/HomeNetworking,

As the title says, I'm trying to upgrade my WiFi, it's quite terrible at the moment (ISP box, slow performances, no 5 GHz, constant disconnects, ...)

My actual internet speed is between 700-900 Mbps down (theoretical 1Gbps), and I would like to have some of that speed on my newer devices (Just tested on my phone: 12 Mbps on WiFi... By comparison I'm at 70Mbps with my phone 4G. I'm not even using WiFi on my phone anymore).

I have around 10 devices max that connect to the WiFi, some older one as well (802.11n at worst I think). Anything that requires low latency (gaming) or stable transfer speed (NAS) is already wired.

I think my most important criteria is stability (speed and connection), and the ability to achieve at least 500Mbs on a single device. If the device is a router, then some router-worthy configuration options would be good: opening ports, DNS, restricting access, ...

If possible, I'd like to somewhat future-proof a bit my WiFi:

    • Not necessarily now, but some meshing option would be good (old stone walls in the house): so not having to re-buy a new mesh-ready AP would be great
    • I will have smart devices connecting to the WiFi
    • WiFi 6? 6e ? AC1200+ ? Is it going to be useful at all for home networking ? I'm not going to have more than 2-3 devices using a significant amount of BW at the same time. Will it have other advantages other than speed ?
    • WPA3? Tri-Band? MU-MIMO? And the other new features/buzz words? Will it be useful at all for my use case ?

So basically I'm torn between 3 options:

I'm tempted to go with the mid-price option at the moment.

Has anyone got some feedback on TP-Link. They come up quite often. Are they OK or do they have bad hardware/software ? I must confess I'm also a bit paranoid about installing some Chinese spyware device into my network... (Xiaomi, TP-Link, ...)

What do you all think ? Thanks !

TL;DR: So many options to choose from, not sure what's important in terms of feature, for now and the future. And prices can get high.

Basic question about mounting an access point on the ceiling

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 02:38 PM PDT

Do you install a keystone jack on a wall plate? Or, you just poke a hole in the ceiling drywall and then hang the AP using drywall anchors and screws?

Reason I ask is that we're doing a renovation on our main floor that includes tearing most of the ceiling drywall down. I want to install something in the ceiling that looks clean and works well. A clean, professional looking install is the priority.

Anyone have any photos showing the mounting hardware with and without the AP on it?

Lastly, with an omnidirectional AP, I'm assuming the best location is smack dab in the middle of the room.
