Posted: 09 Mar 2022 02:42 AM PST Hi all, I have a laptop here running Linux mint that I have forgotten the password for, so I can't log in. Is there any way to rescue this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Finally decided to install Linux Mint CE Posted: 09 Mar 2022 03:59 AM PST For now, I'm thinking of dual-booting it because I'm still not sure about installing drivers and some other stuff as well.Though as I was in live and was thinking of installing there were some problems or confusions that I encountered and I really want you guys to help me with this. So, I first entered as just Linux mint cinnamon edition (without compatibility mode), my resolution was huge, I mean for a 1920x1080 resolution laptop this was really big so, I restarted and this time entered in compatibility mode, though this time it was 800 or so resolution which I've seen is quite normal. So, I decided to install it and as I was going through steps it gave me a pop-up that there is a partition and if I wanted to unmount it or keep it as it is, since it said that I could still use it to install I clicked on No and proceeded forward. Then it showed me that I have to disable my BitLocker and I was taken aback.Look, I'm not saying I don't trust Linux but with all these cases coming up of Lapsus's hacks and Linux exploits, I'm a little scared. If I do disable BitLocker and go through with mint's installation, I'm unsure about the steps that come after the installation like installing drivers and stuff. This is it though and I would really appreciate it if you guys give your advice and answers to my problems and confusion. I'm really thinking of moving away from Windows but since I'm so accustomed to Windows and the ease of use it provides, I'm still hesitant to completely move over, that's why I'm going for dual-booting and not completely Linux. How to run .desktop games through steam? Posted: 09 Mar 2022 03:00 AM PST |
Posted: 09 Mar 2022 12:55 AM PST My laptop is currently dual-booted with windows as my primary OS and PopOs as my secondary. I would like to add more space to the Linux partition, however the Swap and /boot/efi partitions are in the way. Some quick reading said this is very dangerous and not a great idea. Would it even be possible to move the /boot/efi drive while I'm in linux, or would it be better to do from windows, since none of the windows drives will be moved? Is there a recommended application to move hard drive partitions? If it's too dangerous, what other options do I have for expanding the amount of space my linux OS has access to? [link] [comments] |
App/program to view images in a continuous list format. Posted: 09 Mar 2022 02:04 AM PST Recommend a light weight image viewer which show images in a continuous list format. Reason - I made a script which scrapes website to download manga/webtoons for mangas it's not much of an issue but for webtoons it is because they are long stripped so they needs to be in a continuous format and if they contains a image wider than others then the pdf if is adjusted according to it (using image2pdf for converting images into pdf). tried converting them into a pdf but didn't got the expected results. I tried feh and sxiv both have only thumbnail format for multiple images. [link] [comments] |

trying to transition into tiling window managers (from Pop!_OS) Posted: 09 Mar 2022 07:38 AM PST hiya. been using Pop!_OS's tiling window manager thingie for some time now (on my laptop). i like how we can use four fingers to scroll up and down to change workspaces and the shortcuts that Pop!_OS has like using super key to bring up a search bar up to look for any programs, super + t for terminal, super + f for files, etc. but i've been meaning to graduate to an all out tiling window manager now, and i'm not sure which one i should go for. what are your suggestions and reasons? nothing too specialized like dwm. thanks [link] [comments] |
recovering default Fedora repositories after removing all .repo files Posted: 09 Mar 2022 05:54 AM PST Hey y'all! I accidentally removed all the repositories (all the files in "/etc/yum.repos.d/") on Fedora Workstation 35 (x86_64), and now when I want to install a package or upgrade, I get the following error:
I'm trying to add the default fedora repositories (the repositories added and enabled for a clean Fedora installation). From some old posts on Fedora Forum I found out that I have to reinstall the fedora-release rpm file. I got the the rpm file from here, and installed it with the following command but after the installation, I get the same error message when I try to install a package or upgrade.
How can I recover the default Fedora repositories? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Many keyboard actions don't work Posted: 09 Mar 2022 04:37 AM PST Just like the title says, on basically all the distros I tried(Ubuntu, Pop and Manjaro, live cd and full on installation) all of the keyboard actions/ shortcuts but typing work ( ex the super key doesn't work, alt tab doesn't, ctrl c doesn't etc) I even switched USBs, any way to fix this? Please help me choose a distribution Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:23 PM PST Mobo: Intel DG41RQ Processor: Intel e5400 2.7 ghz Ram: 1GB DDR2 HDD: 320 GB I simply want to do basic tasks like playing videos and editing text files. I have used Windows 7 on this system since 2010. I never used Windows 10 on this system. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Mar 2022 12:20 AM PST Hi, I am using Manjaro Cinnamon Edition. / is mounted to a 500gb NVMe SSD and /home is mounted to a 2TB Sata SSD. What I want to do is mount /home also to the smaller NVMe SSD so I can reformat the larger one to use it in another system. What would be the best and easiest way to do it, so my Manjaro install is still going to work as before? [link] [comments] |
Trying to figure out if my project is within my scope Posted: 09 Mar 2022 04:00 AM PST Greetings, I've had a project brewing in my head for quite some time now, but its hard to figure out if it is actually possible in the way I want. Maybe some of you can help me reality check the idea. I want to turn my old gaming rig into a server for plex, storage and other stuff. Since its a somewhat decent PC I started to think of other ideas I can integrate into that.My plan is the following;- Use the PC for everything I do around the house, wherever I work.- Connect to it in my network and over vpn, and let it display the screen output over network (I've heard something about xserver being able to do that?) Bonus would be to also stream my audio to my TV. In my perfect world I would use raspberry pis as "clients" and do all the work on the machine. The Pis would only be needed to connect a monitor/TV/projector and periphery Is a setup like this possible? And if yes, is it something I can at least work towards as a noob? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Mar 2022 11:04 PM PST Hey, I'm on RHEL 7.6 and when I open a new tab ( ctrl + shift + t), it starts that new tab with default config and the default directory. In my other machine (Ubuntu 18 LTS) the new tab has all the configuration ie pwd and alias of the previous tab. How do I make my RHEL terminal to open new tab with the pwd and alias instead of the default config.? Also ctrl + arrow keys; don't work in RHEL terminal how do I make it work ? Thanks any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
What are your favorite terminal commands? Posted: 08 Mar 2022 10:07 PM PST Not a complete noob here but am only recently discovering the power of simple terminal commands and pipes. Here is my favorite so far, what are yours? Post your command and let the comments either interpret it or suggest a better method to accomplish the same thing!
