    .zip files and extracting them

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 09:23 AM PST

I saw another post about this but decided to make a new one since it'll give me a more recent answer, I downloaded a .zip file over google chrome and the website I download it from suggested I download it with 7zip. I tested out if it was possible to extract without it and it did. Is there an integrated .zip extractor in windows that renders 7zip useless or should I still download it?

side note: don't know if I should still say this but feel like it might be important, i'm downloading from steam unlocked.

Observed Behavior of CPU Requirements in Windows 11

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:17 AM PST

I haven't seen much talk about this, but there appears to be a "hard" and "soft" floor for the CPU requirements.

On my first gen surface go doing a clean install of Windows 11 works no problem.

On my 6th gen i5 Thinkpad clean install of Windows 11 no problem.

On my 4th gen i7 desktop clean install Windows 11 refuses to install, citing the CPU as the issue.

So it looks like somewhere between the 4th and 6th gen CPUs there is a hard floor where Windows 11 refuses to install without work arounds. Also I'm in the dev channel on my surface go on the latest build and I don't have the system requirements not met messages.

fix for 'invalid Ip configuration' OR 'Secured, no internet'

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 07:56 AM PST

okay so im just wanting to put this out there.

I've had this issue for days now. and i believe i have found a fix for it.

If you have tried the basic EG - the following:

    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew
    • netsh winsock reset
    • netsh int ip reset
    • uninstalled the drivers and tried older versions.

And still to no avail. Try the following. (it worked for me)

use an ethernet cable to get your computer/laptop onto the internet.
    1. log into your router (just google how to do this, very easy)
    2. now once in, find the option to reset your wifi back to default.
    3. thats it.

This worked for me, may not for you. But i don't want someone else to go through the hell i went through just to have find this solution.

Side note: I found this tool to be what i believe to have been useful. sites alittle dodgy but yeh, idk if it helped but it was free and did what it said it would do. (without a payment wall) https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/netadapter-repair-all-in-one/dl/270/

Restoring a win 11 backup on win 10

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:45 AM PST

I would like to go back to windows 10 but the only way for me is via a clean install. I read some things here and there about creating a backup or system imagine and then restoring that on windows 10. But does that even work? And if so, in what way?

    Solution for Inverted Scrolling

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 01:28 AM PST

Does anyone know of an app that will invert my scrolling?

Coming from a mac I prefer the opposite scrolling directions on my trackpad. I've tried the registry editor method & it didn't work for me. There must be a software solution for this right?

    Windows 11 in Corporations

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 06:55 PM PST

I'm curious, now with the requirement of a Microsoft account to setup Win11 pro, what does that mean? Can you disable that login once it's setup? In win10 using a microsoft account during setup creates a user folder that is like the first 6 characters of the user's name and that's not changable, unless you create a new user and delete the pre-generated one.

Have the login servers ever went down, what's their reliability, can they meet the demand of the world logging in at 8am every morning?

Because, for corporations, what does this requirement mean? That installs are more complicated? Like, how are thousands of vm's going to be deployed that before didn't need internet access to login to your local machine and don't allow any internet access unless done through the corp's vpn? Also, no corp I know of, I don't know many, none use a microsoft account to login. Will that requirement to login to a microsoft account be bypassed for business use?

    I don't get it.

Where in the background is located? I am saying where is the place where this screenshot taken at

Why doesn't File Explorer keep the scroll position when going back to the parent directory?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:58 AM PST

When a directory has lots of subdirectories, if I double-click a subdirectory to open it and then press the mouse's back button to go back, the scroll position is not kept. For example, go to C:\Windows, scroll down a little bit so that Fonts directory would be around the middle. Double-click the Fonts directory, and then press the mouse's back button. Now the Fonts directory is at the bottom of the list.

It was like that on Windows 10 and is still like that in Windows 11. Why has this not been fixed? Is this not a bug, but what Microsoft want the File Explorer to behave like? If so, what is the rationale? Do people like this?

    How to prevent accidental scrolling

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 11:37 PM PST

With my new laptop, I find that when I hold the screen (like a tablet with my thumbs resting on the left and right bezels) sometimes I accidentally touch the scrollbar which causes the page to go flying up or down. I want to disable touch for a few pixels on the left and rightmost parts of my screen. Anyone ever had these issues and/or have any suggestions to go about hacking/fixing this?

Best way to share folder on network?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 05:51 PM PST

I want to share an art folder so I can open and save to it from any of my devices, but I want it limited to just me and not other users, but I don't want to have to log in to it or anything like that each time.

    Best option? Thanks!

Fix for Windows freeze combined with an annoying high pitched beeping

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 04:18 PM PST

This is a duplicate of my post in r/Windows11: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/swju4j/fix_for_windows_freeze_combined_with_an_annoying/

Just posting it here to spread awareness!

    Background

This error has been bugging me for more than a week and I've been searching for a fix (or even a single mention of the bug) for it endlessly. It even got to the point, that I completely clean-installed my computer, only to be met with the same annoying beeping sound after switching the Windows Theme. There was not a single mention of a problem in the "Event Viewer" and the maintenance report came back with no issues, as did the memory diagnostics tool.

    Error/Bug description

Basically, the bug happens anytime something (remotely) computing intensive happens, mostly linked to a wallpaper change. Everything freezes, even the Task Manager, combined with a lagging mouse pointer and an annoying high pitched beeping sound. It lasts for some seconds or even up to a minute and is mostly followed by an Explorer restart (which is marked in the EventViewer with the Reason "AppHang", so not very helpful). During that time every input is ignored, and if the Task Manager did refresh, you could see "System Interrups" taking up almost 100% CPU.

    More information

After almost giving up and considering to buy new hardware, I stumpled upon this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/owq16v/mouse_lag_beeping_sound/

Apparently, it's a known bug related to the Video Driver and/or performance issues on AMD CPUs (mentioned here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/beeping-and-stuttering-performance-on-windows-11/ed0d4291-0c79-4cbf-b596-75707d89dd96). A potential fix mentioned in the thread is switching your background from a slideshow to a single picture. I immediately tried it, but with limited success. The bug still occured from time to time and using Wallpaper Engine was still impossible. So I played around in the settings and found a fix which worked for me (for now; no guarantee!):

    My personal fix

The error seems to be linked to the automatic determination of the Accent Color rather than switching the background or the overall theme of Windows itself. I had "Accent Color" set to "Automatic" and also selected the "Change Windows Color" option in Wallpaper Engine. After setting it to "manual" in the Windows settings and disabling the"Change Windows Color" option in Wallpaper Engine, I finally could change the wallpaper without being met with an annoying beeping and freezing of Windows.

Please keep in mind, that it's only been a few hours since I (potentially) fixed this issue but I changed my wallpaper multiple times through Windows and Wallpaper Engine and never experienced the issue again (for now, let's hope it stays this way!)
