What is the difference between | and > ? Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:31 AM PST I have somehow been unable to find the answer any where. Both are used to redirect the output of commands from left to right, but why are there two different symbols for this? [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on best practise for installing sdk's and development tools Posted: 20 Feb 2022 01:06 AM PST Hey all, I want some advice on best practises for installing development tools, I'm installing flutter for reference. Reading online people recommend installing tools in the "/usr/local" or "/opt" folder (I am using the former). After moving it there I added the binaries to the PATH. Now I just need to change the bin folder's read write permissions to the current user so the executable can run and read data from that same folder. So, Is this the correct procedure? should I just go and change permissions or is it not best practise. I'm slowly switching from windows and just want to make sure its fine to randomly change folder permissions like that Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Feb 2022 09:16 AM PST So for fun-zies I made a VM of my first Ubuntu install (10.04) just to enjoy some nostalgia. Then I thought, I should walk through the history ubuntu and just appreciate (or complain about) the changes. Naturally my next VM was to be 4.10 BUT I cant get it to recognize the allocated space as something to be partitioned. Has anyone had any success doing this with vbox 6.1 or is this a waste of time? Best distro for ryzen 5900x? How to appropriately download drivers? Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:26 AM PST I have an issue with my PC freezing. I've tried many solutions and circling back again. I want to do a fresh install of linux I know which distro probably doesn't matter for AMD support and probably depends on what you install. However, I've done tons of software and hardware fixes and no resolution. My last software attempt is to reinstall a different version of linux (currently using ubuntu 20.04, most recent kernel). I previously had pop_os! on my computer, so I suspect that has something to do with it. on the uefi boot menu, I have 3 pop_os! options. do I remove them? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:58 AM PST Hello everyone, I just reinstalled Zorin using a fresh .iso and as usual had to change from inferior rtw88_8821ce driver to rtl8821ce. The easiest way to do that on any distro is with Additional Drivers app. However it did not work this time, it says the rtl8821ce driver is in use but it isn't, lspci says the module is there but it isn't loaded in. I've tried using modprobe rtl8821ce but it didn't work. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu on Macbook Pro 15 2018 driver issues (no peripherals or wifi working) Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:39 AM PST Hi everyone, Yesterday I managed to install Ubuntu 20.04 on Macbook Pro 15-inch 2018 using rEFInd (and lots of help). However, I'm running into issues trying to make the Mac's embedded keyboard and touchpad work (currently I'm using an external keyboard and mouse) and also enabling wifi (I can only have internet through ethernet cable and even sometimes it's not recognised by the machine). I have done sudo apt-get && sudo apt-get upgrade and my friend has tried to install the drivers from a website and he managed to do it but the screen started to flicker at all times and after rebooting the machine, all the changes disappeared (I'm needing to use external keyboard and mouse again). Please could someone tell me what's going on and how may I install the drivers ? I would really appreciate your help. [link] [comments] |
Dual Booting Ubuntu and Windows Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:22 AM PST I have a 512GB SSD and a 1TB HDD in my computer. Would it be possible to give the SSD and 512GB of the HDD to Ubuntu, and the other half of the hdd to windows? [link] [comments] |
Live-USB setup: Porteus script produces not bootable drive Posted: 20 Feb 2022 10:10 AM PST So, the procedure already was a bit annoying. Instead of just supplying the .iso to just burn and boot directly, for Porteus you have to:
Problem: The new install script didnt work, so I searched for it and found out that the old one works: (Forum post) Did the same, copied the new installation script into the place of the old one, ran it with chmod and sudo, it worked and finished. The USB stick is not bootable. I chose the right architecture, the drive is partitioned as FAT32 in KDE-partition manager (I think a fork of gparted). I have a reular BIOS and tried a lot of distros already. Can I somehow just change the .iso a bit and regularly burn it? I think the weird installation way makes the stick not bootable. Finding Linux (Mint) compatible wireless headphones (in the UK) Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:55 AM PST Hi, Wondering how to go about this, searching on Amazon UK hasn't helped. Looking for over ear headphones/on ear, that aren't ridiculously expensive. I've done individual searches from articles that (mostly from the US) review headphones that usually end up not being available on Amazon UK. Sending back ones that aren't compatible would be a hassle so I'd prefer to get it right the 1st time, but also considering these will be sitting on my head (with my brain being essential..) safety is not something I'm willing to compromise on... (super long battery life isn't needed,or any fancy features although EQ would be nice but not necessary) Any ideas? Thanks in advance ! [link] [comments] |
