Need 16:10 laptop casual gaming and productivity

    • Need to run Virtual Machines time to time, need a powerful CPU
    • Connect 4 external monitors when needed
    • Should have USB-C charging support
    • Gaming performance is not big deal, can lower in-game graphics settings.

I'm between 2022 Asus Zephyrus 16 and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-16-wuxga-165hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-ddr5-memory-nvidia-rtx-3060-512gb-pcie-4-0-ssd-off-black/6494642.p?skuId=6494642

    and

    https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Legion-Pro-NVIDIA-7-5800H/dp/B09NS2SMKP/ref=sr_1_3?crid=5WPR7XYHV0G1&keywords=legion+5+pro+3070&qid=1645362003&s=electronics&sprefix=legion+5+pro%2Celectronics%2C257&sr=1-3

Zephyrus has 12th gen Intel, DDR5, Pcie 4.0, better portability, better battery, better touchpad, liquid metal cooling, undervolting support, Thunderbolt and better multi monitor support (One DP is connected to iGpu and the other is dGpu so I'm guessing I can use dGpu and iGpu separately)

Legion 5 Pro is cheaper has RTX 3070, much better screen, better dual-channel ram support, better linux support, better quality control etc..

So what do you guys suggest?

P.S: I actually bought Legion last week for $1470 but I am not sure if 5800H would be sufficient vs 12700H. It hasn't arrived yet, so considering to cancel it.

    Legion 5 vs Triton 300SE

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:57 AM PST

I'm split between the Acer Predator Triton 300SE with the i5-11300H and the Lenovo legion 5 with the Ryzen 5 5600H, both with 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, and an RTX 3060.

The legion 5 is slightly more expensive. I'm wondering about the difference in cooling and build quality. Does the legion 5 get substantially higher wattage on the card in practice and would that impact framerate? Ideally I want the laptop to be VR ready while not being too expensive.

Also wondering about the difference in build quality? I've had a bad experience with the plastic cracking in lenovo laptops in the past. On the other hand the lenovo legion seems to have a second M2 slot which is tempting.

Low spec laptop tha is compatible with Dell WD19 dock and can do two monitors from the dock

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 07:23 AM PST

I know this is an odd request. I have a dock that is for work, and I don't want to have to switch out a bunch of cables every day when going for my work laptop to my home laptop. I don't use my laptop for anything super memory intensive, just the bare minimum to get

    1. Being able to use a single usb-c connection to the dock
    2. Being able to use two monitors with that dock

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    Total budget

<$1000 preferred and purchasing in USA, but if I need to go over, that's not going to be a tragedy. I feel like there's something that doesn't go over.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    SURE

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Little to none

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Little to none

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Bigger is better but really don't care

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Cricut design space
    • Arduino IDE
    • Vs code (for light projects
    • Light internet browsing
    • Candle for CNC. No cad.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Gameboy emulator

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Compatible with wd19 Dell dock and can support two monitors Can work only connected using only USB c dock cord

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

All I care about is working with the dock and being able to use two monitors through the USB c in the dock. I don't even care how that works. Just connecting to the usb-c to the dock, and being able to use two monitors / whatever USB ports are available in the dock.

Lower the price the better. You can see I'm not doing anything advanced on the computer that requires horsepower.

Advice on laptop for 3D rendering app

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 06:01 AM PST

    Hey guys,

i am looking for a laptop capable of managing 3D rendering app for surgical interventions. such apps are:

at the moment i own a macbook air M1 8gb RAM and i can handle the basic functions of these softwares but several renderings cause the laptop to freeze...

i see many colleagues using alienware laptops but honestly i find them REALLY thick and uncomfortable since i often travel for work. I heard good things about a recent Asus laptop.

Can you please give me advice about which laptop would be best for my situation? i am looking for something lightweight and possibly not crazy expensive.

    Thank you!

Picking between two laptops, UK, budget of around £800

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 05:42 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I'm trying to decide between two laptops. I found the Lenovo Yoga Duet i7 for around £650 on the Lenovo UK website and while it looks good I can't decide whether to get it or wait and get either the Surface Pro 7 or 8 in a few months when I can afford it

Will be mainly used for entertainment, Foundry VTT for DND and FL Studio for making beats.

In terms of gaming, not really planning on doing it much. Maybe the highest thing would be Fallout New Vegas, buts it not a deal-breaker if neither can

    Best gaming laptop for £500-600?

I have a desktop for gaming and a laptop for surfing the web.
Im selling my ancient laptop and will replace it with something more modern, so Im going to try and buy something which is "better geared" towards gaming, than those low end laptops which simply arent.

I need help in chosing which machine which will run games better than any other laptop for my tiny budget of £500-£600

If I want the best gaming laptop for £500-600, what new models could I be considering? Thanks for the help!

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:06 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking to buy a laptop that I need for gaming and work purposes. This needs to look professional and I will be visiting people in their homes for work purposes, and typing up information so nothing that's has lights all over it. Just something sleek and professional. But when I log off for work I want to be able manage the best graphics. I was looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 pro and it looked pretty good but on the reviews the trackpad being under the s key would drive me insane when typing up.

Any help would be great, thanks.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget - UK - £2,000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Not really, would ideally like New-

-as above, gaming so would like 3060 but willing to compromise as I probably don't play games that require that at the moment. Mainly Iracing, Hunter Call of the Wild and Fortnite. But I would like to future proof as well.-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-more it has to look professional when I'm with clients-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      -15.6 or above-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      -as above

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • I was keen on Lenovo Legion 5 pro but the trackpad being out a bit to the left would probably drive me insane when I have to type up full documents in front of people is I keep catching it-

I just need something that can play game decently while doing web browsing and basic office work on the side. I already have a PS5 just in case I change my mind.

Looking for a black laptop with backlit keyboard. Budget is $400

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 09:19 PM PST

I just want it for college and for it run Minecraft smoothly. I'm in America. I don't want to spend over $400. I don't want a touchscreen laptop. I don't care about size either. It has to be new. No chrome-books either.

There's a lot of laptops with backlit keyboards but they are all silver and not black. And if they are black they are over my budget.

Please suggest me a good one please :)

macbook or notebook for a high school student?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 12:18 AM PST

if I opt for one I would pay at most if it is worth it about 1500 euros which in dollars is about 1.697,46 US-Dollar

I also think it is important to mention that I own an ipad which is the device where I take notes and keep school files.

I was mainly going to buy the macbook for two reasons.

    1. you can install the notes app that I have on my ipad which is not possible on a windows laptop.

(being able to have my notes that I have taken at school and being able to have them on the laptop AND BE ABLE TO MODIFY THEM seemed to me almost enough reason to not even wonder what a windows notebook could give me that a macbook could not).

    1. (Airdrop) the ease of sending files is immense.

for those who do not understand: IT IS LIKE Bluetooth but 100 times faster and more compatible with your apple device if you already have one like in my case an ipad.

But I still wanted to make sure to know what are the advantages of a windows laptop in a high school student's perspective.

or to know what it can give me that a macbook can't?

    to give you some idea

the windows laptop i wanted to buy is the lenovo legion 5 i will see if there is a better one for no more than 1500 euros (1.697,46 US-Dollars)

and if i go for a macbook i will see which is the best for that price range and if it is worth paying more than 1500 euros (1.697,46 US-Dollar)

    Looking for 2 Laptops

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 11:11 PM PST

    Hi folks,

I'm looking at purchasing a couple of laptops - but am struggling to find anything that matches the bill.

    Laptop 1 -

Primarily used for game development (Unreal Engine) - decent stylus support for design work would be a plus, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

Given the primary use, it'd need to be decently powerful, and capable of gaming.

    Laptop 2 -

Primarily used for graphic design (Adobe Suite) and CAD work - would need stylus support due to the amount of drawing intending to be done.

As it's for CAD work, it'd probably also need to be reasonably powerful.

We originally looked at potentially getting a Zenbook Duo, but they're fairly expensive in Australia (around $4k for high specced one).

I'm fairly new in the laptop space, so any suggestions would be super appreciated!

    Thanks everyone,

    Budget $1500-2000 AUD, Australia, Student/Video Editing/Movies

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 10:12 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500-$2000 AUD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yep.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

From Most to Least Important: Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life, Form Factor (13-15in)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Reasonably, I have to travel a fair bit so I've already ruled out most of the bulkier gaming-focused laptops.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Prefer something in the range of 13-15in.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Premiere Pro/Sony Vegas, Ableton, Photoshop

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Am interested in an OLED screen and fairly solid build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I was looking at the Lenovo Slim 7 Pro 2021 model and had actually ordered the Ryzen 5800H variant for $1400 AUD through their EDU store, but they've been repeatedly canceling my order and claiming issues with receiving funds. Confirmed with my bank that the issue was on their end and have had absolutely awful customer service experiences trying to resolve what is likely just them actually not having the product they sold.

Despite that it seems like more or less the kind of laptop I'm interested in, I've looked at similarish models like the XPS 13 but the AUD pricing is just a little bit insane to justify the specs.

Request suggestions for a budget (<1000 €) laptop capable of CAD, FEA and programming parametric 3-D objects

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 09:32 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      • 600-900 Euros, Netherlands/Germany
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?:
      • Not really. I am open to refurbs only if it won't be obsolete in 2 years/be in really good condition.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?:
      • Battery life > performance/build quality > form factor.
      • I give equal importance to performance and build because I am not a tinkerer and a laptop which breaks down frequently/is easily damaged will be of little use to me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?:
      • Not very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.:
      • 15 - 17 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run:
      • CAD: Yes, I will be running CATIA (v5 or 3D experience), NASTRAN, Abacus and doing some Python programming.
      • Gaming: no.
      • Video/photo editing: no
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? :
      • I am not into gaming. I like watching gameplays more than playing games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?:
      • I want ports. Lots of ports. USB-C, USB-A, Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD card reader slots, I want them all. I want to be able to connect so much stuff that my laptop's surroundings look like someone made a sculpture of the Amazon forest in electrical wiring.
      • A good keyboard with a number pad makes life easier.
      • I would like a good 'precision' touchpad. On the rare occasion, I have had to use CATIA without a mouse. At that time I really wished my touchpad was better.
      • I don't need an optical drive, but I wouldn't mind one.
      • Reliable build quality is important to me for reasons explained below.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • 70% of the time I spend on my laptop is for entertainment, i.e. stuff like reading books, watching movies, browsing reddit. I do have multiple apps open all the time. So, it would be nice if the laptop is able to handle it with ease.
      • 30% of the time I try to work on developing my skills.
        • I work as a structural engineer. So, I play around with CATIA V5 to practice 3-D modelling and NASTRAN for FEA. My company will soon switch to CATIA 3DExperience and Abacus for these tasks. So, my new laptop should be abble to run these softwares.
        • I also try to learn Python programming on my own. My work uses Python programs to model 3-D objects parametrically and generate finite models from those models. It also has programs that use actual product data from the past to predict the cost, manufacturing time etc. of new products. This basically involves reading from large databases and writing to Excel/PDF after some analysis. So, most of my Python Tutorial Time (PTT) is spent on learning these kinds of things.
        • I also try to spend at least some of my PTT to learn how to program things that seem like fun. e.g. I have been trying to build an FAQ bot for a subreddit for almost a year.I spend a lot of time on my laptop. My current laptop crashed on Friday and I didn't know what to do with my hands while it was in the shop. The techperson advised me to buy a new one because this one is a 2015 Toshiba, nearing the end of its life.
      • I live and work in the Netherlands and I travel frequently with my laptop. I am clumsy, so the laptop will get a few hits on each trip. This is why I need a good quality build in my laptop.
      • I am not a tech savvy person, even though I use tech all the time. So, I will not be able to tinker with my laptop and upgrade stuff as time goes along. Therefore I would like something that with specs that are good enough to be 'non-obsolete' for the next 4-5 years.
      • Twice a year a go back home for a holiday to SE Asia. The power situation in my hometown is dicey. I also have to use my laptop away from a charger when I travel with it within the Netherlands. Therefore a good battery life is important to my use case.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my post and for helping my out.

Edit: first edits were to correct a few typos. Then I rearranged the post multiple times to get a 'valid form' flair. I thought my post wasn't getting noticed because the form hadn't been filled properly. Then, the bottom third of the post got deleted during one of these edits. So, I had to reedit the post to add it. FML.

not more than $2000, US, need a general use laptop

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 07:57 PM PST

Ok. I'll admit, I've checked in here a couple of times in the past number of years but things have always been complicated with money and time and everything BUT this seems like the exact time to do it.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No more than $2000 in total, including any recommended/needed peripherals. USA, south New Jersey.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Nope, I want to get something brand new that'll replace the one I've been using since 2015 and will hopefully last at least just as long. Somehow.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I basically need it for watching videos and streams, I watch a lot of stuff on youtube or twitch and I just bought a LG DVD/Blu-ray player that attaches to my current laptop via USB. So just a laptop that can handle that kind of thing, and a nice battery life would also be a bit of a relief at this point. My current laptop's batter burned out many years ago so I can't really use it for more than a minute unless it's plugged in, in which case it works fine.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do like editing videos from time to time but really just as far as like... taking scenes out of shows I'm watching to post them somewhere. That's about it. I also don't know what CAD is..

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

While I'd like something that can run the Yakuza games, gaming is no longer a priority for a possible laptop anymore. I can honestly just get a PS4 at some point for that. It's way more important to have a laptop that can do all the other stuff I mentioned and won't break the bank. And will hopefully last as long as possible.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I guess just a comfortable keyboard, I type a tonnnn. Also I don't want to have to add any RAM or storage space myself, which I would've had to do with a laptop I tried buying a year or two ago... I didn't trust myself enough to be able to pull that off without messing something up so I'd want the laptop to come with a reasonable amount of RAM and lots of storage space. This current one I've been using since 2015 has over 600GB of storage space in it, so that's what I'm used to.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Lemme just review the list I wrote on my phone... a good camera and mic because I see almost all my doctors via telehealth currently and my dying laptop's camera is basically broken now. USB ports, possibly two next to each other since that's what matches the wire that came with the DVD/Blu-ray player I bought. A good amount of RAM and storage space right in the thing (at least like 500GB of storage space, I know SSD or whatever is the new thing but I'm not used to having only 225GB). Uhhh I'll be using it to watch twitch, youtube, Blu-rays and DVDs, I also have a 4K movie but I don't think any laptops can run 4K movies so that's whatever lol

ok god I hope I got everything. I hope I don't mess this up again.

I can't thank you guys enough for the help
