    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 12:50 AM PST

So i got a pc with a gtx 650 (i had it for a while now then researched on it and realized i was playing on a brick with wires) and I've been saving up to buy an rtx 3080, is it possible to switch from these 2 very different cards? i mean some of the wires on the case even seem to block the way for the rtx, so ive been wondering can anyone answer my question? Please and thank you

Can someone give me a quick overview about the DDR4 vs DDR5 discussion?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 08:28 AM PST

    Hey guys!

I'm currently building a new PC, because I finally got a RTX 3080ti for a relatively reasonable price. I want to match it with an i7 12700k and a MSI Mag z690 Tomahawk motherboard.

I don't know that much about the current situation for RAMs and so I'm still deciding between the DDR4 and the DDR5 version of the mainboard I mentioned above.

My budget is not very limited, but I see that DDR5 kits are still pretty expensive, but I might regret going for DDR4 when DDR5 prices start to decrease, because then I'm still stuck with my DDR4 motherboard.

My main use is still gaming (about 70%) on a 1440p/165hz monitor, the rest is music production and also some video/photo editing and rendering.

Hope you could give me a small oversight about this whole situation with the current DDR4 vs DDR5 discussion going on, maybe also some advantages/disadvantages. :)

My Oil-Cooled high-perf PC; comments? what will go wrong?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 04:55 PM PST

I live in a humid oceanside house - *everything* dies somewhere between 12 to 24months (principally from accumulation of salt crystals that regularly turn to "brine" and back as the humidity rises and falls).

I want a new, fast PC (5950X or i9-12900K (I care mostly about single-core speed) with RTX 3090 ). The components I picked draw 98 watts at idle, and 710 watts at full pelt.

I've decided to build a combined heatsink+case and fill it with oil (to keep out the salt+humidity+dust+etc). I had the idea to "cool" the oil on one side (back of the mobo), and "flow" it past the components on the front-side in a "loop" - in theory, the "cool" side should flow down by itself, and the hot side up, so it might even circulate without fans - but I'll have fans in the oil anyhow.

    But I like avoiding mistakes...

Can anyone "crystal ball" gaze and tell me what is going to go wrong? The 3D case model is here https://a360.co/3tGWoIT : or a screenshot of it here: https://chrisdrake.com/img/Passive_Case.png

I am aware that the Peltiers alone will consume 1500 watts at peak load (they're powered separately - not from the PSU, and it's "only" 200watts at idle), and I plan to have a few huge fans on the external heat-sinks so at "idle" the peltiers will not be powered at all.

Assorted things I have though of...

    • Maintenance will suck (oil on everything)
    • Cannot use mechanical drives of course
    • Not sure what capacitors are going to do when they find themselves in oil rather than air - I've seen older oil-PC's run for years, while some modern ones had the caps simply "fall off" after just months.
    • Oil (liquid paraffin in my case - the key ingredient in baby-oil FWIW) attacks regular thermal grease, so special stuff is needed
    • Leaks, weight, cable wiring, stupid amounts of heat it's going to expel into the room (2400 watts all-up at max tilt)
    • ... but it's the "unkowns" (unknown unknowns?) that have me worried... this is more than $10,000 in parts that I'm about to drown...

what else could possibly go wrong?

What do you think of this build?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:49 AM PST

    Hey all,

as GPU prices are slowly dropping I am hoping to build my first PC at the end of the year. I was just wondering if the parts I picked make sense:

    Case: CoolerMaster MasterBox NR200 Max

    CPU: 5800x

    GPU: RTX3070

Mainboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I Gaming

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB

    M.2 SSD: 1TB Samsung 980

I want a small form factor to PC to place next to my TV and route the cables through the wall to my office. Noise and size are major factors for me as I currently have an XMG Laptop but I absolutely HATE when the fans of the Laptop turn up.

I heard that the MasterBox NR200 Max is super easy to build in, as most cables are pre-routed and I am a first-timer so I want to make it as easy on myself as possible.

As I plan on video-editing, streaming and gaming on this machine I thought the 3070 plus 5800x combo would be perfect.

Do you guys have any advice or is this build fine as it is?

PC doesn't start up, wrong motherboard BIOS maybe?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:15 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

Yesterday me and a friend were putting together a PC, after all the pieces were set however there was no display output and also the usb mouse and keyboard wouldn't start up. When turning the PC on all the fans started spinning and LEDs turned on (GPU, CPU and case fan). We've waited 10 minutes and tried several times with no success.

We tried 2 different monitors which are known to work, tried 2 different GPUs and took the whole thing apart and put all the pieces back together but also to no avail. Also tried putting in both RAM sticks in on their own. None of the equipment seems to be broken and everything seems to be in the right place. Our suspicion is that the motherboard might not have the right BIOS version, could this be the issue? And how to check which BIOS version the motherboard has?

Also the little on board speaker doesn't make an error sound.

    Parts list:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor Biostar X470GTQ Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Memory Western Digital Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB Video Card Deepcool MATREXX 30 MicroATX Mini Tower Case Xilence Performance X 550 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply

Any tips are welcome, thanks in advance for thinking with me! :-)

Make sure to try all kinds of different ideas when trying to solve PC issues

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:53 AM PST

My gpu wasn't giving hdmi output when it had a dp cable plugged in (dual monitor).

I saw an old reddit post about reversing the hdmi cable (ie monitor end to pc, vice versa) which sounded absolutely ridiculous.

    Worked first try.

    PCs man.

Anyone else wish there were more mid-high end computer components that offered an unstylized tech guts sort of look?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:05 AM PST

I think part of the appeal of getting a look under the hood with glass side panels is the contrast of a sleek case and the unobscured tech inside, but this is lost imo when everything's covered in plastic and black paint, if I wanted that stuff obscured I'd put a side panel on the case.

    Okay to drill a heatsink?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:52 AM PST

My Cpu cooler Arctic Freezer 7X did not fit onto my Gigabyte Z690 Motherboard. The Metal Screw which connects the cooler to the bracket not the bracket itself! Was touching a Motherboard Heatsink? So i drilled the motherboard heatsink so that the Cooler screw can be screwed tighter. Everything works now, but i am worried, like this the top of the cpu is indirectly connected to the mobo heatsink.

    Windows 11 for new build?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 11:10 PM PST

For my new build, should I use Windows 10 first, then upgrade to Windows 11 down the line, or should I use Windows 11 straight away? Heard Windows 11 had a bit of a rocky launch but haven't heard anything since then so I have no idea if the current version is still buggy.

Also where is the most legal place to get a retail, non-OEM key of Windows? Is it best to purchase from Microsoft directly?

    Mobo recommendation

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 04:16 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am trying to decide on a mobo but the more I look I get more confused. I have an old rig I want to upgrade. Plan is to have (upgraded and old) - i7 12700k, noctua NH-d14, g.skill ripjaws V 32G 3600 CL 16, Samsung 980 pro 1T, Gigabyte RTX 2060 super. Now I am debating between Corsair 4000D/5000D airflow, want the white version of either, and can't decide on mobo - kinda want it in white, thought about the asus ROG strix Z690-A, or Gigabyte aero D, also got recommendations for the MSI tomahawk. So need help deciding on Z690 mobo and maybe other case if my choices are not the best ones. Please let me know also why one is better then the other so I can decide if this apply to me in choosing one over the other.

    Thanks, Oren.

Issues with stream: GTX 1660 Ti / i7-6700K and 1440p monitor.. what to upgrade?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:41 AM PST

    Hello!

I am having a lot of FPS issues when I stream. I have a 27 inch monitor which is 1440p resolution.

My CPU is an Intel i7-6700K. My GPU is a GTX 1660 Ti.

Which of these should I try and upgrade sooner? Ideally I want to upgrade them both but I can only do one at a time.

Important note: I do not struggle at all when I'm off stream. All of my games run smoothly at high/ultra settings and I don't have a problem. However when on stream, I do run into issues on the actual stream. I still don't see any issues on my end but my stream lags quite a bit. Putting the game resolution down to 1080p fixes this.

So is this a CPU issue or a GPU issue?

    Thank you ><

    Killed my CPU? (i7-5820k)

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:12 AM PST

This was a working pc for years, I retired this Build when I completed my new build and wanted to transfer this to replace my current TrueNAS server. Somewhere along the way I removed the CPU and reinstalled with fresh paste.

    Here's my paragraph of troubleshooting so far;

It began a new issue where the board power button lights up and everything gets power/fans spin but there is no display being output or post. I googled and troubleshooted, switched the bios to secondary which began a new issue of the pc turning on and immediately off. I reseated the cpu again which is when I found I had to slightly maneuver/put in some force to make sure the CPU aligned with the guides. I've ensured the CPU is installed in correct orientation and cpu cooler is making contact. Tried 1 stick of RAM in every slot, swapped to a different PCIe slot, a different GPU, took the entire board outside the case and on a table, tried 3 different RAM kits, multitude of different RAM positions, both BIOS's, plugged the power straight into the wall and cleared CMOS with a 30 second power button hold, replaced the CMOS battery with a new one after leaving it out for about an hour, DVI cable to monitor from GPU, different monitor, did a PSU test, hooked a speaker to the motherboard and it made no sound whatsoever, unplugged and redid all PSU connections, double-checked that they are locked in (8-pin CPU & 24-pin board). Probably missed something.

The only lights on the motherboard that are on when the pc is on are the physical power button, reset button, and current BIOS indicator light.

When I turn on the pc, it will continuously run until I force shut it off with no display. Any keyboard I plug in shows no indication of being on.

    My CPU pins

Monitor always in standby, all the lights that are on when the pc is switched on

    Audio Questions

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:09 AM PST

I'm new to the pc world, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Any speaker recommendations? After research I'm leaning towards the Logitech g560, but I've heard of software issues with them.
    2. After purchasing the speakers, Is it necessary to run my speakers to a sound card for the best audio? Or can I just run them to my motherboard? From what I know recent motheboards have good enough on board sound, but I wanna be sure. I have a tuf gaming x570 pro btw.
    3. I was given sennhiser hd660s headphones from a friend, and after research it seems that I need a DAC for the best sound quality. I'm not sure where to start, any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance!

I currently have Windows 11 on a usb stick downloaded from my old Windows 10 computer. Once a have booted it on my new computer, do I need an activation key to use it?

Can I use a single 6+2 pin on a GPU that has two 6 pin ports?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2022 11:56 PM PST

I'm giving my girlfriend my old PC as a present and as a way for us to play some games together since her old laptop is not really cutting it anymore.

    Specs:

    CPU: AMD A-10 7850k
    MB: Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2
    RAM: 2x4GB DDR3 1600Mhz
    PS: Gigabyte 80+ 430 Watt
    (Potential) GPU: Radeon HD 6870

The issue I've stumbled across is that this GPU requires two 6 pin connectors while the power supply only has one. I like to think I'm usually pretty well versed in computer what-nots, but with this I'm genuinely unsure and Google has some conflicting answers. This GPU is from a friend so if it won't work I can just give it back to him, so I'm not at a loss of money or anything.

Would it be safe to use just the one 6 pin? What if I used the extra two pins in the second set? Could I get a molex/sata to 6-pin adapter? The games she would be playing are mainly Skyrim, Sims, Minecraft, and other indie games if that helps with anything. Thanks!

Upgraded my PC and now Windows is not running

    Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:05 AM PST

Hi guys! I've just changed my case, GPU and RAM so I had to disassemble the entire PC and assemble it again.

I have Windows 11 instaled in a M.2 SSD which I didn't even unplug from the motherboard and it's detected by the BIOS correctly. But, when I power on the PC, it says "Reboot and select proper boot device".

I have already put the M.2 in first place when booting up and I don't know what more I can do. Thanks!!
