    Simple Questions - February 04, 2022

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 09:00 PM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Like many of you, I'm here to help people get into PC hardware. I've been on this subreddit helping out for the best part of half a decade, with probably thousands of users helped by now whether it be immediately or by someone else chancing upon a thread later and learning from it.

Recently, I've noticed many users coming on with good intentions but who are severely lacking in hardware knowledge and end up posting misleading information.

For example, someone yesterday told some newbie shopping for a PSU that he should open it up to replace the faulty fan. That's not just wrong, that's potentially lethal.

Of course, I could not just leave the thread open without correcting the them because of a fear that a 12 year old kid was going to see the thread a year later and think that opening a PSU was a good idea. Instead of taking the opportunity to learn, they began arguing that they were correct despite not being able to produce any reliable source.

I don't want someone to say that this subreddit was the cause of a kid being hospitalised, and I'm pretty sure you don't either.

I've seen similar careless advice given at least once a day over the last year or so. Sometimes it's a waste of money, like recommending components that don't fit users needs. Someone today said integrated graphics was fine for running a dual display flight simulator at 4K, for example.

Sometimes it's a waste of time, like saying components are alright when they have a chance of not working out of the box eg recommending a 5600G with a board with no BIOS flashback. It simply may not work because it doesn't have an updated BIOS and then they'll have to deal with the hassle of returns etc.

That's going to be frustrating for the end user and I've seen them return confused and ask why. I don't want our community to disappoint new users and turn them off PC building so it really saddens me to see that, even more so when I realise I can't help them.

Sometimes it's outright dangerous, like the PSU example.

On behalf of this subreddit, please be responsible for your comments. Don't jump in with good intentions and cause more problems than you solve.

If you don't know, that's fine. Slowly read and learn, that's how you get good at stuff. Please don't just jump in because you wanted to feel good for 'helping' someone and end up causing more problems.

It's really great that you want to help, but please make sure that you are helping and not getting the people you're helping into bigger messes.

    Mouse leaking sticky black fluid

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 05:58 PM PST

Every few days some black, sticky fluid leaks from my mouse and i have to keep cleaning it every few days coz the mouse becomes sticky, the fluid smells weird, like a disinfectant, something strong you would use to clean a toilet for example and it's very sticky. Unfortunately i don't have pics right now because i just cleaned it and wasn't planning on asking, wasn't thinking much of it but my paranoia is overwhelming me now because my fingers have been swollen for a couple months and i'm not sure if it's just from the cold weather or... something toxic is leaking from my mouse, it's a cheap Chinese mouse (Jertech Sword XP10)

I went a little overboard after getting some feedback from here and some other places. In the end I am totally happy with the result! It has run all of the games I want it to so far. It is a little hard to judge graphics right now, I ordered a new monitor but it got delayed with the weather in the midwest.

TIL: Use both power cables for your RTX3000 GPU

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:38 AM PST

I recently had to troubleshoot the PC of a friend wich was instantly shutting down after starting a game. I first checked thermals and software but then came to the conclusion that the PSUs over current protection kicks in. I specifically got him a 750W be quiet PSU because of the high power draw spikes on RTX3000. After trying a couple of things I put in the second PCIE cable instead of using a single one for both slots. An voila..it works perfectly fine now. I never knew this could cause a shutdown but splitting the power draw fixed the issue. The card used in the build is an RTX3060Ti without any oc.

I hope this helps someone with a similar issue. I've built some PCs already in my life and had no idea about this. Have a nice day :)

    Bare minimum GPU for Gaming

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:39 PM PST

I want to build a PC for gaming (flight sim mostly). What model mobo and GPU would you recommend if I want to first build a budget friendly yet sufficient one ?Once the GPU prices go down I want to upgrade to one of those 3090 RTX. As for the monitors I'm thinking to get 2 curved 4K HDR ones.

Really happy with how it turned out! Just a few more low priority things to change before it's fully finished, namely:

    • Grey CableMod cables. Didn't want to purchase these in advance as I had no idea about colour/length.
    • Swap out the old Apple LED Cinema Dispaly for a another monitor and possibly a third.
    • DDR5 in the future? Kinda bummed about this, but DDR5 just isn't worth the price right now.

    CPU reaching 100°C at 100%

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 06:30 PM PST

So I recently built a new PC, the CPU is an i5 11400 with an Intel stock cooler. My problem is that when the CPU hits 100% utilization, the power draw increases to about 110W and the temp jumps to close to 100°C. At the moment I've limited it to 99% utilization through Control Panel's power management and the power draw doesn't exceed 45W, and temperature is around 60°. Should I just keep those settings and use this or is there a way of limiting the TDP to around 90W?

Screenshot of the AfterBurner Graph. The peak is when I put it under full load

EDIT : Thanks for all the advice guys! I'll be looking at new coolers now. Also apologies to anyone who thought I was dismissing their advice on getting a new cooler, I was worried that the power draw was unusual for this CPU

What can i improve and/or lower the cost of a energy efficient build? (help)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 02:36 AM PST

Hi everyone, so i'm building a new mini-itx pc, but on a pretty tight budget.

Here is all the config that i have:

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
    • Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition
    • Motherboard: GIGABYTE B550I AORUS AX
    • Ram: Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz, DDR4, 32Go (no rgb, it is also funny how rgb cost 50$ more lol)
    • PSU: Corsair SF600, 80 PLUS Platinum, 600 Watt (would like to go with a seasonic focus spx 2021, but it isn't out yet (seasonic ftw))
    • Storage: already have
    • Gpu: too expensive lmao

    So a couple of question:

    1. Is there another motherboard with 3 display output available? I couldn't really find one
    2. Is there a way i could lower the cost of this build?
    3. I want to make this build as energy efficient as possible so no rgb for this

Also when i will got it, i will undervolt the heck out of it to save power, so is the psu as stable as a seasonic one?

Edit: I will use the Ghost S1 case from Louqe (I know it not budget)

New RTX 3060TI flickering in game! Help me understand if its default!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 04:34 AM PST

    Hi all,

I got a new PC and while i was gaming i noticed that i have a very bad flickering that happens in some situations mainly shadows/water.

For the majority of the time it is ok so thats why im also not understanding if the GPU was indeed defect i would see that all the time , right?

This is the video example :

    https://streamable.com/mnpfjx

In this case i have the game option all maxed out with DLSS on balanced with 16x anisotropic but ive tried with ani 0x and all DLSS options and this always happen.

Is there any program that i can use to try to understand if the GPU is damaged or this have to do with the codding of the game?

Really freaking out since ive put alot of money on this PC :/

    Build temps I7 12700k, MSI Gaming x Trio 3080

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:08 AM PST

    CPU Idle - 34-37c, CPU Game Load - 55-62c, CPU Cinebench load - 85c max, GPU Idle - 30-32c, GPU Game load - 65-70c

CPU is running with a H100i Elite Capellix 360 cooler. Both cpu and gpu have custom "quiet" fan curve on them. Both are completely stock with no overclock. From research I think I'm in the normal range. I just used the Corsair preapplied thermal paste so maybe changing that out would low temps a little, idk if it would be worth it though. Let me know thoughts? Thanks!

So I went to the bios to check if it recognise the ssd. And it does, so I can't understand why Im getting this message.

    Can i use a Gen 3.0 M.2 NVMe SSD in a Gen 4.0 Slot?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:56 AM PST

So, i've ordered the parts to build my new PC, all using PCPartPicker, and this didn't flag as an issue so assumed it was okay.

I've got the B550 Tomahawk Motherboard, which i know has 2 M.2 Drive slots.

I've got 2 Samsung 980 M.2 Drives, a 500GB which will be for my OS and a 1TB for everything else.

My question is, will i have issues using the 500GB M.2 in the Gen 4.0 slot on my motherboard? Or will it work fine, but just not as quick as a Gen 4.0 M.2 would in that slot

How do I activate a SSD with files on a different PC?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:42 AM PST

I want to switch my secondary sata ssd on my office pc. But it will start unallocated right? So if I do the usual New Simple Volume then the next step is "perform a quick format". I want to keep my files in it. And I don't know if I should check the "perform a quick format". Should I check the box or no?

    11400F + 3060TI low fps

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 03:53 AM PST

Hi as the title suggests I get low fps in warzone/caldera with everything mainly on low (around 60-70fps) on 1440P.

I was wondering what might be the problem.

    CPU:11400F

    GPU: 3060TI Gigabyte 3 FAN

    SSD: Samsung 970 evo plus

    RAM: 2 x 8 (16gb total) Kingston Fury Beast 3200 Mhz in slots 2 and 4

    CPU fan: noctua dh-15s

    Motherboard: MSI B560M PRO-VDH

PSU: Corsair modular 650W Gold rated

    Monitor: LG27GP850 180hz

Keyboard: Corsair k65 mini 1000hz polling rate

Mouse: G pro superlight 1000hz polling rate

I use the ultimate performance battery plan and have all my nvidia drivers up to date with performance settings selected in the nvidia control panel under 3d settings.

I get around 60c degrees on my cpu when I play Warzone and roughly 60-70c degrees on the GPU when I play Warzone.

Ive tried using ISLC and I cant notice any difference.

    Any advice would be appreciated

Ups - Uninterruptible Power Supply recommendation

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:36 AM PST

I am looking to buy a decent UPS. I am constantly looking over at /buildapcsales but they never post sales for UPSs. I would prefer to buy a decent used ups shell and then order a new battery for it so save money. I currently do not have a ups so anything is an upgrade. I am looking to power just my gaming PC. I have a 750watt power supply on it. Any recommendations and sites to buy from? Thank you

Do I have to re-place thermal paste if I want to reposition my AIO?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:17 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Basically my AIO is routed in a way that it would block a sensor monitor I plan to install at the back of my PC. My plan was to switch its orientation of the tubes and I'll probably need to re-install the AIO (I don't think they can be rotated? correct me if i'm wrong), will I need to repaste the CPU when doing so? I just installed the AIO and repasted it a few days back.

    Thanks!
