What's the difference between Kubuntu and KDE Neon ? Posted: 21 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST I have been using Ubuntu for more than a year now and was thinking of changing my distro... Cuz why not. I specifically want to use the KDE Desktop environment. And I would prefer if it's based of on Ubuntu (more specifically debian) because I have to use the apt package manager and it's what I'm comfortable with. Therefore I believe I have 2 options ie Kubuntu and KDE Neon. I can't seem to understand what's the difference between the two. From what I understand Kubuntu is directly based off on Ubuntu LTS with GNOME replaced by KDE Plasma DE. But when I look at KDE Neon website they say they're based off on Ubuntu. So then how are they different? Also does KDE Neon ships with apt package manager by default or not? PS, Don't recommend Linux mint as I have tried it and personally I didn't like it. So far I feel GNOME is one of the most consistent DEs in terms of UI. [link] [comments] |

/etc/resolv.conf doesn't persist after reboot Posted: 21 Feb 2022 10:04 AM PST I tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf" and choose option "NO" for preparing dynamic updates, very likely due to this error: "resolvconf-pull-resolved.service is a disabled or a static unit not running, not starting it." It won't finish job, and so on after reboot resolv.conf will return back to generated one from NetworkManager (without my manually added DNS addresses) I don't know how to get past that error... played around with dnsmasq few days without sleep. Lubuntu 20.04 LTS. [link] [comments] |
is it good practice to set permissions for directories you make in ~/.config ? Posted: 21 Feb 2022 02:18 AM PST some programs will automatically make a folder inside ~/.config whereas others require you to make the folder and create the config file yourself. i noticed that most of the folders created automatically when you run the application often have: drwx------ (though not all of them, for example GIMP), whereas, if i just mkdir the folder myself then the default permissions are drwxr-xr-x should i just leave the folders i created as drwxr-xr-x ? or maybe set the permissions so it's drwx------ ? I mean, i know it's not THAT important since things will work regardless... but was just wondering if it's good practice to make folder permissions more strict instead of just doing a simple mkdir each time. Folder Shortcuts?? For Other Hard Drive and Locations Posted: 21 Feb 2022 05:18 AM PST So I am basically working off a small hard drive, and saving most of my projects to External Hard drive Locations. I would like to have those locations saved in my home directory so I don't have to search through my external hard drives. Pretty much a shortcut, that would open that location of the folder and I can open items from that folder. I can Right Click and save the folder to places, on the side, which is convenient enough, but when I have like 10 folders from combined projects it gets rather crowded, and I end up just going through each one. I would like to have the shortcut to my desktop be able to save and edit and save more to that desktop folder instead going through the external hard drive and go through the other folders I have there. Can't Boot; Can't Free Hard Drive Space in Live USB? Posted: 21 Feb 2022 10:08 AM PST I can't boot; Ubuntu just loads up a white blinking "_" on the top left of a black screen after unencrypting my HD on booting up. I boot using a live USB and see that my HD has 0 kb of space left. I use sudo nautilus to delete files from that HD with 0 space and nothing frees up. I've deleted all kinds of files to free up around 300 mb of HD space and it still says 0 kb free even with them staying deleted after rebooting the live USB. What do I do? I've already ran a disk check, boot check, etc. and it said everything was fine. Long story short I was messing around with BleachBit in admin mode and deleting various "deep" parts of my HD to free up space before this all happened (which I had never done before), which caused the HD to freeze up, restart, and blink the "_". Stupid, I know, but it is what it is. Could that have anything to do with it? Either way I just need to know how to free HD space with a live USB when even using sudo nautilus to permanently delete files still has it at 0 kb free. [link] [comments] |
Purging encoded (?) characters Posted: 21 Feb 2022 05:15 AM PST I've occasionally had "corrupted" characters in my bash scripts, but they are not shown in nano, cat -A <file> or from what my bad vision could see in vim with a special set list: command. E.g.
Yet on screen all looks normal. All originated on the same server via ssh. No special tweaks to encoding (since I wouldn't know how). Text via cat: --vfs-cache-max-age 120h --tpslimit 10 Ideally there is a nice way to trap/see/remove such invisible errors? [link] [comments] |
Hotspot can't establish connection with Android devices Posted: 21 Feb 2022 05:13 AM PST I have a machine running MX Linux 21, and I've tried different encryption types, different Android devices, one device found the network and after I type the password it just says "saved" but doesn't do anything when I try to connect, my other device, couldn't find the whole network, I've tried adding it as a hidden network, didn't connect, I've tried changing the connection type to ad-hoc, same thing, the only device able to connect is my other Linux machine (haven't tried connecting from Windows) running Fedora, thoughts? The screen frame rate is wrong Posted: 21 Feb 2022 06:04 AM PST Hi, my screen is 144 HZ, and this is supposed to be the only frequency available to it in the first place, but I noticed yesterday that it is 77 in the settings of the kde and I tried to change it from xrandr it says that the 144 is not available, and I tried to change it with rxrandr so it doesn't get anything but 77, what is the solution? How many characters in the word egg? Posted: 20 Feb 2022 02:00 PM PST We all know this we can count easily it's 3 right? Turns out due to echo always printing a new line after each command it add's on another character to wc each time for the newline. Using something like printf will give the correct result I'm now sat here wondering how many times I've counted characters wrong and given false reports. For reference I've been a "professional" sysadmin for about 5 years now. [link] [comments] |

Video and Sound Issues (Ubuntu) Posted: 21 Feb 2022 11:07 AM PST
As far as sound, my second monitor is a tv and the speakers on it are better than my small desk speakers. I can't seem to get the tv speakers to work though. Its connected via HDMI and when I switch to what seems to be the hdmi connected tv in the sound settings, it shows its working, but I hear nothing. Any help greatly appreciated. Edit for video: I'm a bonehead and didn't have FFMPEG installed. Still require audio assistance though please lol! [link] [comments] |
Moving files from Ubuntu to Windows Posted: 21 Feb 2022 03:00 AM PST Hi, is it safe to move files from Ubuntu to Windows? My laptop has dual boot (Windows and Linux-ubuntu), and I mostly used ubuntu, however the maximum amount I can partition to ubuntu is 32 gb so I have to move files (mostly pdf books) to windows. While in Ubuntu, I can access my Windows files through "+ other locations" tab so I can also open some files from my Windows in Ubuntu. I tried moving some files today from Ubuntu directly to Windows through "other locations" tab; however, I wary if it safe. If there will be problems in my memory allocation? So yeah, is it safe? Would you recommend it? [link] [comments] |

Compiling and running Java, and scripts to make it better? Posted: 21 Feb 2022 09:24 AM PST I have been trying to figure out a good way to run java. I like the idea of using vim, nvim, or some other text editor. What would be the best one for that? I also read that doing it this way, you don't get some of the stuff that helps when coding java. Can I script what I don't have available? [link] [comments] |

File Chooser Dialog - Help fixing 'hidden' and mouse button actions Posted: 21 Feb 2022 07:35 AM PST Howdy So I'm currently using bspwm with vanilla arch and Thunar as my file manager. I've tried setting these options in dconf editor, but they have not stuck. I would also like to know how to enable mouse button navigation in this dialog as well. It works fine in Thunar. I'll also paste my settings files below. If anyone can help explain this to me, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details. E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/oguzhaninan/stacer/ubuntu impish Release' does not have a Release file. There are two more respositories with the same error. What's the problem?
