Getting a 10 Gbps Connection - router / switch options? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:00 PM PST A local ISP is laying down fiber and my hookup date is in a week. Apparently, the new line is going to be "up to" 10 Gbps symmetrical with no caps for I know that is insane amount of potential bandwidth, but it appears that there aren't many non-enterprise level solutions for capitalizing on my connection. I work at a tech company, but sysadmin I am not. I know ASUS is coming out with their new AXE16000 which has a 10Gbps RJ45 port, but are there other solutions that are readily available? Just got 1gbps Internet Speed! YAY! So why is my wired connection 130mb down? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:15 AM PST Modem: Arris DG3450 Router: Netgear Nighthawk r6700v3 (aka AC1750) Motherboard: Asus Z170-A Cables: Cat 5e Ok, so I have WiFi on the modem that they just installed. I can get around 400-500mbps on that. Awesome, all is good there. I wired it to my nighthawk router that i've been using when I had a 250mbps connection. That is then wired to my desktop. I go to speedtest.net and I get 100-140mbps down. What the hell.... I bypass the router, and plug it right into my desktop. Same. I hook it up to my daughters laptop, (modem to laptop) and its 900mbps. Um, ok. I go into the Nighthawk app for my router, and run a speedtest on it. It gets 230mbps. What the hell? If you look at the nighthawk documentation I linked, on page 12, it says if the light is white on the port, its 1000mbps. I look to make sure the ports are all gig ready. Page 13 can confirm they are Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 LAN ports. Ok, so whats the issue there? I try the wifi on the Nighthawk router, and its just as shit. I go to the documentation on my mobo as it is pretty old. Page viii, " Gigabit LAN Connection." Ok, cool. I go to Network Settings -> Ethernet -> click on my port. Metered is off. Down where it says, Link Speed (Receive/Transmit): 1000/1000 (mbps). I go to Adapter Options -> Right click on it -> Status it says, "Speed 1.0 GBPS." So whats the deal here? I've rebooted all devices involved here multiple times. Any advice would be really appreciated. Update: Updated the LAN Drivers, and i'm getting around 300+ down now. Understanding SFP+ and its relation to ethernet/rj45 Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:11 PM PST Hi! I recently purchased this card (https://www.ebay.com/itm/324839881013), and realized I don't really know what to do with it. Because it said "ethernet" on there, I assumed my cat 7 cables would work, but it's clearly a different connector. Is there a regular RJ45 connector for a card like this? Am I way way way off base even assuming that this could be used to connect my server to the internet? NOTE: I posted this on /r/networking but it was locked cuz they assumed it was for home internet. No Internet in Secondary router Even when main router has internet. Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:09 PM PST Tl;Dr :- Internet in secondary router doesn't work until i reset, after a short internet cut out in main router. I Connected my old router (Tp-Link) to use it as a WiFi Extender. I've Connected the old router with main router, given by ISP (Nokia) via Ethernet cable (LAN-LAN connection). Disabled the DHCP server on my secondary assigning it a different IP than of my main router. AP mode is On and ISP is in Bridge mode on secondary router. It works all good for some minutes. My cable is working, Length of cable is 30 meters. Both routers are at good condition. But ,When internet gets disconnected in the main router, obviously Secondary router gets disconnected to main router. But when Internet is back in the main router my secondary router still has no internet and will not work until I restart my secondary router. What can I do to make my secondary router get connected to internet automatically after internet is back on main router? Is it even possible to use (TP-link W901N) router as a wifi extender. Is ethernet wiring guy scamming me? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 06:14 PM PST We are renters in a new build house. There is a cabinet in the top floor bedroom with all the ethernet cables from around the house. The other end is outside the garage. We weren't here when the Fibre was installed, so they didn't connect the ethernet, so now I have to pay to get it done myself. I had a home networking guy come over who quoted me $500 to connect the cables outside, move the fibre box from the kitchen to the garage, and active the ethernet throughout the house. However one of the things he said was that all the plastic jacks at the end of the ethernet cables in the cabinet upstairs are on backwards. Something to do with how electricians have different rules for wiring and they always put them on backwards, so the internet guys always have to fix it. My landlord sent an email to the builders who said that's not true. Here is a photo of what I'm talking about circled in red: https://ibb.co/m5J9ZzY. I can take a closer photo if need be. Is it possible all the plastic jacks are on wrong? Or am I being fleeced? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 10:53 PM PST Am looking to buy a modem(which is a modem/router/AP) and there's this two products with same specs the only difference is MODEM A : 4 antennas, 2 x GE ports. MODEM B : 2 antennas, 4 x GE ports, maybe mobile app support. Which one is better? [link] [comments] |
Blocking remote connections at the router level Posted: 31 Jan 2022 08:30 PM PST Greetings r/HomeNetworking, So I am one of the fortunate who can work from home, and I started with a new company recently and after an unexpected remote connection I'm feeling uneasy with their respect for privacy. For my peace of mind I would like to find a way to control their access to my network. Adjusting settings on my work laptop is not an option. I thought I might find some security settings in my router ( Archer A10 ) to at least block ports for devices on my network but the only option I'm finding is whitelist/blacklist for devices actually physically connecting to my network wired/wirelessly. My question is, what solutions you guys might know of to have pretty fine tune control over inbound connections to individual devices on my network? Not sure if the gear I need is a better router or maybe a hardware firewall? no idea really. I'd be willing to spend ~$200USD for gear, any recommendations are much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2022 01:45 AM PST Hi all, I've recently been spooked from an experience at work (we've been hit by the Deadbolt ransomware that's affecting QNAP servers), and while that in itself is limited to QNAP, it got me worried about something similar happening to my home setup eventually. I would very much appreciate if someone could give me a sanity check on my setup. I am moderately savvy on this sort of thing, but not to the point where I can spot a hole, or know how a hacker might target my device. So without further ado; I have a Raspberry Pi NAS running Noobs, with Open Media Vault doing its NAS thing. My Internet provider has put me behind a CGNAT, so I use a ZeroTier VPN to connect from the outside. I'm seeing people describe those that got affected by Deadbolt were "exposing their NAS to the Internet," and something about port forwarding. This is at the limit of what I understand. I know my VPN is meant to simulate a network which makes my devices think I'm in my local network, but does this mean I am safe? Couldn't someone connect via the ports that ZeroTier uses? Or any other port, for that matter? Perhaps this is more about my router? What settings should I be checking? In fact, I found it so difficult to connect to my NAS from the outside - because of the CGNAT - that it makes me wonder if the CGNAT itself is making me more secure? ie. without a specific public IP address for someone to target, is it acting as another layer of security? I appreciate this is basic stuff, but haven't managed to find someone with my specific setup, so who knows what hole I may be leaving open. Any help much appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 05:18 AM PST I have Gigabit internet and need a faster router. I will buy a wifi6 router but is wifi6e really worth it? I have a 160hz capable wifi card in my pc a few walls away. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I need help sourcing a router. Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:23 PM PST Is there a way to find routers that are compatible with these specifications? •1 Gps Ethernet WAN port Anytime I look at a spec sheet for a router it doesn't say anything about these specs besides the Gigabit WAN Ports and it's really frustrating. Either a way to search for routers compatible with these features or a couple links to a few options that do would be much appreciated. for reference these specs are listed by a potential ISP as necessary for me to bring my own equipment. what it looks like is that they have a ONT that stays outside and runs ethernet into the house. Omada DNS settings in multiple places. How do they correlate? Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:50 AM PST Hi, I'm new to networking but I managed to setup up multi vlan/subnet network in my home with the router, 2xSwitches, access point, and Omada controller. (I completely didn't lock out myself from management vlan first time I created it...) I have some questions. I see that for each subnet I can set 2 DNS servers or choose "Auto". Auto sets up my gateway IP as the DNS for the clients that used DHCP. Now:

Posted: 01 Feb 2022 12:37 AM PST Hi, now I'm having a connect box from UPC as my router. My download speed is 300 mbps and my upload is 25 mbps and the maximum from my internet provider, but in game my ping is really high. If I will buy a better router will my ping become lower? [link] [comments] |
What can cause a "Weak Signal" According to ISP Posted: 31 Jan 2022 11:53 PM PST Was having random drop-offs, where I would play a game and get disconnected or lag for a bit before it reconnects. BUT , my modem never resets and my browser doesn't load the page. The ISP Customer service person told me to do the steps, which i did. She then suggested for a technician to come out to check.. So basically what causes a "Weak Signal" She said my signal fluctuated a lot from 0.9 to 38 [MAX]. I asked her what the Max signal was supposed to be she said for download stream it's supposed to be 50 ? idk.. I did speed test at the time and i was getting my regular Mbps and Upload speed.. Possible to go wired with this setup? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 07:59 PM PST Moved into a new house and encountered a metal box on the wall of the utility room with a nest of cables. No idea what this does or if it's even activated. Found a seemingly related transformer in another bedroom about 30 feet away (with an ominous note to not unplug). There are a few jacks throughout the house that resemble ethernet ports though they could also be phone jacks. Near those jacks are blue ethernet cables sticking out of the wall. Any idea if 1) that monstrosity of a black plug absolutely needs to stay plugged in and 2) if I can somehow get wired speeds throughout the house if I add an unmanaged ethernet switch to my modem/router setup and plug an CAT5e ethernet cable into one of those empty jacks on the wall? (My cable modem is provided by Spectrum [no tv service]; router is a Ring Alarm Pro hub with built-in eero 6; also have an extra eero 6 node for wireless extension.) [link] [comments] |
WFH, having trouble with cloud based virtual desktop, IT department is blaming internet? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 01:42 PM PST So my gf and I are both WFH (different companies), and we both use cloud based virtual desktops for our jobs. My computer is 20 ft with direct line of sight to the router. Hers is about 40 feet without direct line of sight, but only one door sometimes blocking the signal. Our entire apartment is one floor and about 900 sq feet. This is our setup: -Router: Netgear56 Nighthawk AC1900 Smart Wifi Router, R7000 -Internet: GoNetSpeed Fiber. 150 Mbps up and down -GFs speed: 135-146 down, 46-58 up, 6-8 ms door open or closed -My speed: 150 down, 110 up, 6 ms -We both typically connect our comps to the 5ghz. Speeds are noticeably slower on the 2.4 for both of us Devices: 2 computers, 2 cell phones, sometimes 2 tablets being used at the same time. My computer has been totally fine, no issues. My gf worked for a different company a few months ago and was also fine, only rarely getting kicked out of the cloud. She then joined a new company and gets kicked out on a regular basis. She finally had a heart to heart with her IT and they blamed it on our internet. Said it was nearly fast enough and is on the low end for internet. Their recommendation was to buy better internet or run an either cord 50 feet to the computer. Am I crazy, or does that sound crazy? I know offered internet speeds have gone up, but 140/50 sounds like plenty to me. Is this an issue on their end, or ours? If ours, do we need faster internet or maybe an extender? Just seems crazy to me since basically no one in our area has fiber and yet all of our friends seem to do just fine (a coworker of mine has a 60 Mbps connection that's not fiber and has no issues). Just seems odd to me, but I haven't followed internet tech as closely as I did when I was younger. [link] [comments] |
iPhone 12 suddenly refuses to join deco wifi system Posted: 31 Jan 2022 11:16 PM PST Hey folks! My deco wifi system is suddenly on the fritz kicking off devices or just not connecting at all. Now when my iPhone tries to connect this message pops up "This network is operating on WI-FI channels already in use by several other nearby networks. Restarting your wireless router may allow it to automatically choose the best channel to use, and may resolve this problem". I live in a city, but everyone's on half or quarter acre lots, houses are not that close. I ran a scan and can't find any interference also Deco doesn't let you change the signal anyway. Running software 2.11.3 on the Deco mesh system. Anyone have any knowledge or ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 05:16 PM PST Renovating my old apartment and putting in ports for ethernet in all the rooms. Connecting the raw connections to the outlets seems too time-consuming. Is there a network outlet where you plug the ethernet cable (with the usual connector) into the back and then there's a port in the front? EDIT: My question has been answered, I was looking for a port with female rj45's on both sides. [link] [comments] |
Moved into a home that previously had Verizon and now I can’t connect my Cox modem Posted: 31 Jan 2022 04:56 PM PST I just moved in to this place a few days ago and got a Cox modem while trying to set it up I tried 3 Coax outlets, none of them seemed to work so I went out side to look at the cable box and both boxes just have a bunch of snipped wires. Does Verizon do this when a previous tenant moves out? And do I need someone to come out to fix this ? [link] [comments] |

Just a quick question about coax to Ethernet and if it’s worth it or not Posted: 31 Jan 2022 06:43 PM PST I have a computer in the basement of my house, I use it a lot but lately I've been wanting to connect it to Ethernet rather than use the wifi. I was wondering if there was a coax to Ethernet adapter that would be recommended for this? [link] [comments] |
Fing says my TPlink Deco X60 Network Netmask is "too wide". Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:18 PM PST Fing says this of my TP-Link Deco X60 mesh routers: "Network netmask (prefix length) is not tuned correctly. Posted: 31 Jan 2022 09:49 PM PST Hi, I need some advice about a new mesh network in my house. At the moment I have the router operator with wifi disable, I'm using a xiaomi ax3600 connected to that router and using the xiaomi router in acess point mode so I can connect some devices there and put plex server working. The xiaomi router its on my office and on the kitchen I have low signal, I have a Ethernet plug to connect some device on the kitchen and using it as a mesh network. My question now is : - Should I buy another xiaomi router and using both xiaomi routers in router mode instead of ap mode and create a mesh network between them? (if using in router I should buy a switch to have plex server working) - Buy a mesh system like TP-Link M5, wired both devices and create a mesh between them. PS: I don't need powerline. I have Ethernet plugs everywhere, just need a mesh wifi stable connection. Thank you for your help. [link] [comments] |
