Computer running poorly since hard drive upgraded

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:27 PM PST

The 1tb WD hard drive in my windows 10 home built pc was getting full and old so I switched to a brand new Barracuda 4tb hdd, figured it'd last me a decade.

Since then, my pc has been running horribly, taking minutes to open google chrome, constantly freezing, and with disk space always being 100% consumed despite no programs running. Is there something wrong with the drive or do I need to do something?

Before anyone asks about an SSD, Im a broke college student who works with chunky animation files and cannot afford an SSD. I appreciate all the help, i still have the old hdd that worked fine if thats of any use!

Not sure if I have a virus

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:14 PM PST

So a few weeks ago my download speed on my pc randomly went from 500 mbps to 350 mbps with normal upload speeds. I didn't think much of it since I thought it was a problem with my internet. The speeds eventually went back to normal but now when testing today I'm suddenly at 5 mbps download and normal upload speeds. I'm getting around 500 mbps download on every other device except for my pc (it uses an ethernet cable). I'm not sure what to do to troubleshoot anymore. I've ran multiple malwaybytes and windows defender scans and they found nothing. Any ideas?

    Notebook Overclock Issue

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 09:23 AM PST

Recently I was impressed to read a forum mentioning that my old notebook could be significantly upgraded:

I overclock with K10stat (OC app) so I can get it going at 3400-3500Mhz (and no overheating) and things run pretty much smooth in general [...]

This APU has an ATI dedicated video processor with 256mb, but since its a basic GPU inside the chip, I "hacked" my notebook (unlocked the BIOS) and I added a mini-pciexpress (I sacrificed the internal wifi) bridge to PCIe so I could use an external (desktop) GPU, by altering the BIOS to turnoff the integrated video (The original BIOS has this setting and AMD-V locked, but the unlocked/hacked BIOS allows to tweak more advanced settings) [...]

I already tested the notebook with 8gb RAM piece (I am using but as single channel, since its only one RAM piece) and with more than 8gb (8gb in one slot and 4gb in the other) and it worked, but I did not keep both since they were from different brands, speed and config....

Source: Acer Community | 2015 Forum Archives

    In short:

    • Overclock from 1.4GHz (Stock) to 3.4GHz
    • Install an external GPU via MiniPCI Express
    • Max RAM from 8Gb (2x4Gb) to 16Gb (2x8Gb)

To begin, I tried to overclock it, as the forum says, with K10Stat but, so far, did not worked.
I was able to underclock it anywhere from 1400MHz to 200MHz and indeed measure the performance decrease with some benchmark tools. However, if K10Stat is set anywhere above 1400MHz, there is no measurable performance difference.

    Question

    • The upgrade described in the forum indeed can be achieved or is it just a hoax?
    • Why can't I overclock this system?
    • Is there something locked? Mobo? CPU? OS?
    • If so, is it possible to unlock it?

    No PNG thumbnails

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:52 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/Eg6cwHw

Started about 2 days ago but I'm not sure what changed. This affects ONLY png files, everything else has thumbnails working properly. It also is happening on every drive.

I've tried all the usual fixes suggested such as disabling "always show icons, never thumbnails" in folder options as well as rebuilding thumbnail cache through disk cleanup.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Networking question, can access site with private IP. But dnslookup cant find it? is it normal?

Networking question, can access site with private IP. But dnslookup cant find it? is it normal?

Is it a hidden network? Currently I'm connected to my corporate network. I can access the private IP 192.168.184.10 in my browser. Then I removed myself from corporate network and ofcourse I can't access it anymore. But its weird that when I'm in the corporate network and try to do an nslookup of this IP address it cant find it. Is this normal, or a hidden network, or just resides in different server? I'm new to networking :)

Frequent Blue Screen of Death and other errors plaguing my laptop

    Posted: 04 Feb 2022 12:14 AM PST

Hi! I have an HP Laptop 15-da1xxx running Windows 11 and lately I've been collecting blue screen errors every day:

    • Unexpected Store Exception
    • Kernel Data Inpage Error
    • Critical Process Died

I tried some fixes such as the chkdsk and sfc scans which seemed to work but only for a short while. I have gotten the boot installer not found error and I fixed it by enabling legacy support. Recently I have gotten the BlInitializeLibrary failed error as well and I just restarted my laptop to fix it. When my laptop was still in Win10 I got blue screens but not as frequent and I thought updating might fix it and it did for some time but now it came back. Before the blue screen attacks became more frequent there was also a period where I get stuck in the lockscreen because the textbox where I input my password would not show up unless I restart my device again. I fixed this issue by turning off fast startup.

I saw explanations saying that it may be due to a corrupted hard drive and I've tried everything I could find except replacing the hard drive itself. None of my files are missing and I'm still hoping I could just reinstall windows 11 or roll back to windows 10 to fix my problem which would be my last resort. I don't really know what's happening to my device anymore and my warranty literally just expired. It would really mean a lot to know if this is a software or hardware problem or at least new fixes/advice especially because I'm in the middle of online classes :((
