The current state of the GPU Market: A message from your mod team

    Posted: 19 Oct 2021 02:00 PM PDT

    Hi All,

As you may or may not be aware, the GPU market is going through tough times. Like really tough. For a year now, a combination of factors have lead to GPUs being in extremely short supply, and highly inflated in price. With the Global pandemic, cryptocurrency mining, tariffs, production limitations and other supply and demand factors still coinciding, it's unlikely that the situation will improve in the near future.

DDR5 RAM is also suffering similar shortages.

We all want to build great PCs, and right now it's hard and that sucks.

We ask for your help during these shortages by requesting that you pay mind to the following:

    • We cannot predict when this situation will ease or end. No one has a crystal ball.

    • Don't ask us how to buy a GPU. You can read about others' experiences and see if you can emulate them with the time and skills you have available, but no-one has an easy answer. People are finding GPUs at retail and patient persistence is one of the primary methods that yields rewards.

    • Some people might decide to use bots to assist them in making a purchase. On /r/buildapc, we do not condone the discussion, recommendation or advertisement of bots.

    • Please don't get scammed. This is a fraught market and fraudsters will exploit your desire to buy a GPU. If a product is being sold by a third party below market price in all probability it is bait for a scam. Never send money by bank transfer, Paypal Friends & Family, or strange cash apps you've not heard of until your seller suggests them. Engage in any non-retail transaction with extreme caution. Ensure any payments you make are covered by robust buyer protection. We will not permit topics such as 'Is this a scam?' or 'Did I get scammed?'

    • Do not offer to sell or ask to buy components in this subreddit or via direct message. Posts will be removed and posters banned.

    • Be kind to one another. Some people may choose to pay inflated prices. Other people may mine with their GPUs. Neither of those make abuse or harassment acceptable and we will take action against breaches of our rules concerning civility.

In the meantime there are ways to build a PC now despite the GPU shortage:

You could build a stop-gap system with graphics output integrated into the CPU or search for used older cards. Some weaker cards are no longer optimal for mining and so may be more readily available. There are many possible solutions, and we're sure the buildapc community can help you if you need a PC right now and can't wait for supply to catch up to demand.

To keep the rest of the subreddit on topic, please keep discussion of the GPU shortages, retail frustrations, etc. to this thread only. Other submissions will be removed.

What's the next "Perfect Pairing" for a long-life gaming PC?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 07:59 PM PST

In my opinion, the I5-4690K and GTX970 is the best value build for longevity in recent memory. I put together this PC back in 2014 and it's been an absolute workhorse. Going on 8 years and it's still performing. Very nearly balanced in performance, and the full build was just over $1000. Not a budget build, but kind of the lower rung of "Enthusiast."

It can still run a lot of(but not all) modern games with medium settings, 1080p. Had some areas with frame drops, but it more or less handled Cyberpunk 2077 on launch.

What is going to be this combination for the next 8 years? Well balanced components, that are good value for money, that can still comfortably play games released in 2030?

A decent case so my wife doesn't yeet it out!?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:28 AM PST

    Hello fellow builders,

I am starting a new build after being on a gaming laptop for the past few years, its time to settle down, but the market is full of glass.

The situation is the following: I have a wife... one that prefers to keep our home looking like a Ikea display room, and a RGB monstrosity with a glass panel aint gonna fit in. Not that i'd even put such a show on, I'll gladly give up the extra 15Fps because of it. I am in need for a case that is subtle, good airflow, no glass panels (mesh is ok), white or black.

I have not decided yet weather I'm going microATX or ATX (probably ATX). i Like the O11, but then again...glass, maybe there is a Etsy mesh panel? Idk. Some specs I'm planning on getting, comment on these also if there is something out of the ordinary:

    - Intel i5-12600k

    - Asus Prime Z690-P (M)

    - RTX3070 Ti (Yeah right)

    - Some Lian li fans, Kraken X63? OR would a NH D15 do the job better?

    - 850PSU and so on... Sff obviously if mATX

Thank you for any suggestions, and if you have a pic of your own, I'd be more than happy to see!

Can you please help me upgrading my pc ?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:37 AM PST

Hello everyone ! First of all thanks to all those who will take their time to help me, I really appreciate it!

Now I'll tell you my project, I'm currently playing on the following configuration:

    Intel I 7600K (3.8 GHZ)

Zotac GeForce GTX 1060, 6 GO

    MSI Z270-A PRO

    Corsair Vengeance 3400 MHZ 2x 8Go

    EVGA 430W

KFA2 Gamer SSD L, 240 GO, SATA III

    Be Quiet! Pure Rock

I would like to specify that the goal of this upgrade is to reach 240 fps on Valorant (which is the game I play the most).

Currently, I run the game at more than 144fps (the game is in minimum configuration), my goal being to move to a more powerful screen in the future (240 HZ to be precise)

After asking around, I think that my processor is clearly what is "holding back" my PC (valuing not being a greedy game, I should be able to reach my goal). I also realised that it wasn't really the time to buy a new graphics card.

This is for me, not knowing much about it I preferred to ask for an opinion before buying.

    Thank you again !

Computer hard freezing after installing used GPU.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:57 AM PST

    Hello guys,

I bought a used EVGA 1080ti FTW3. The guy told me he used it for like 4 years, but played only games like Rust and CSGO which are not very GPU heavy games. He did let me benchmark the card on his PC and it did show good resaults. Temperature wasn't going over 60 degrees. This looked like a good deal for me and I bought it.

Next day I installed it into my PC and ran a benchmark, the results were even better on my end. Later on I started playing Escape from Tarkov and monitored GPU's temperature the whole day. Everything seemed fine and GPU was working as new. After few hours of gaming I went to watch some Youtube and suddenly my PC completely froze. Nothing was happening and even restart button wasn't working. I managed to reboot it by using the power button and everything was working as if nothing happened. Next day while browsing a web same thing happened again, and now its becoming more common.

I'm very optimistic and hoping this might be my PSU from 2014 which is failing and not the GPU. I used to play with 1060 3gb and now I installed twice as powerful GPU so the age of PSU started to show. Maybe you guys have any ideas what might be causing this?

    My specs:

    GPU: 1080ti EVGA FTW3

    CPU: Intel i5 10400f

    RAM: 16gb ddr4 3200mhz

    Motherboard: Z490 asrock

    PSU: 750W bronze (from 2014)

(Before the GPU, everything was working fine.)

How long should I warm up my RAM inside after getting it shipped to my house in subzero temps?

Big gap between CPU and HeatSync

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:15 AM PST

    Hi,

Sorry this isn't technically building a pc, however I have a laptop which the fan always blows cold air from even when the CPU is warm. Took the back off and looking at the CPU there is a big gap between the sync and the CPU itself.

The photo isn't the best as it's a akward angle but you can see the thermal paste hanging on for dear life.

    https://ibb.co/KGVkzk7

As far as I can see there is nothing wrong with the way it's mounted. What would you guys do here?

    Cheers.

Edit - or is this correct and my understanding of how it should be wrong

90 degrees rotated GPU cooling - if there is a solution?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:34 AM PST

    Hello Everyone

I have recently purchased Silverstone G1M which is having rotated 90 degrees layout (IO on top) and built my PC in there. I am very happy with case - for 20 years of PC building experience I believe this is best format for home PC if you dont need many 3,5/2,5 slots. I/O on top, optimized airflow bottom to top, small footprint. But there is a major issue which i have explored just now, which is GPU cooling.

    SilverStone ALTA G1M INTRODUCTION (silverstonetek.com)

The way all GPUs heatsinks designed means traditional horizontal orientation. Once you rotate GPU 90 degrees, there comes limitation of heat pipes. As I understood, water inside goes down where should be the hottest component, but since in this case actual GPU is on top, and the only thing which can push the water up to cool GPU is capillary action, so performance of cooler is dramatically reduced.

In my case temporarily I am using ZOTAC Geforce RTX 2070S of friend's of mine, so in heavy gaming i get the following numbers:

GPU hotspot temp - over 102 degrees C

    Fans - 3000 RPM

Basically it makes the gaming experience terrible - during couch gaming feels like airplane taking off, can hear fans louder than TV on regular volume.

Once i put case on its back, my numbers go much down:

    GPU hotspot - 90 degrees C

    Fans - 2200 RPM.

I have read a plenty of forums where people complaining about the same.

    New Silverstone Alta F1 | Page 6 | [H]ard|Forum (hardforum.com)

Are my RX 6800 XT temps normal? (reference design) : Amd (reddit.com)

6800(XT) card orientation seems to make a difference : Amd (reddit.com)

But there is no conclusion on this. Few GPUs giving same temp in rotated position (potentially Reference RTX, potentially TUF RTX 3070). Silverstone some time back recommended to go for blower GPU - the problem here that nobody is making blower cards anymore. As i understand water cooled GPU could be the ultimate solution.

I'm planning to buy my own GPU soon, could be RTX 3070 or RX 6700, however I have no idea which one need to get to avoid this problem. I wanted this to be my dream rig but did not expect such an issue to come up.

Anyone having experience with rotated setups? Any advise you can give?

EDIT: I have uploaded images of my case with different orientation and corresponding temperature values here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/cCWLMQt

    Is my CPU Too Weak?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 07:06 PM PST

    Specs:

    CPU: AMD Athlon X4 950 3.5GHz - Socket AM4

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H

Graphics Card: MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 12GB GDDR6 Video Card (RTX 3060 Gaming X 12G)

Do you think the current CPU is too weak for this system. If so, why?

What M.2 drive fits my Asus z97-Pro Motherboard?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:12 AM PST

Hello. Im trying to buy a new ssd to my pc. The problem is that i have no idea what kind of m.2 I can buy...When i asked at internet store that had both my motherboard (ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER) and an m2 drive i was thinking about to buy (Patriot 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe P300) if it'll work together, they said that its hard to tell because the producer doesnt specify what is this m.2 socket (?).

I know my Motherboard is quite old, but it works goof for me and i really need just more memory right now and don't have enough money to buy both drive and motherboard at the moment.

Heres what the producer says on the motherboard info:

    StorageIntel® Z97 Express Chipset with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and Intel® Rapid Storage Technology13 support

    - 1 x SATA Express port (gray, compatible with 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports)

    - 1 x M.2 Socket 3 with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (bothSATA & PCIE mode)*

    - 4 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (gray)

    - Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology, Intel® Rapid Start Technology, andIntel® Smart Connect Technology

*** M.2 Socket 3 shares bandwidth with PCIEx1_1 and PCIEx1_2 (in PCIE mode) andSATA6G_4 (in SATA mode), and supports M Key and type 2260/2280 storage devices.

** These functions work depending on the type of CPU installed.

And this is how the motherboard looks like : https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/A1f9BXGiWtL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Rest of my specs if that would be any important information

    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070

    Intel Core i5-4690K @ 3.50GHz - 4 core

    8gb RAM

Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 inch (and my plan is to keep both of drives if thats possible, i thought im ok with computers, assembled 3 of mine before, but at this point i know nothing)

If this m.2 drive is a nono, what would you recommend?

Troubleshooting what went wrong with a simple 3060TI upgrade. Am I losing my mind...

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:24 PM PST

So I installed a 3060Ti in a customers machine recently, and from the moment she got it home she was having issues with her dual monitors cutting out. DDU'd, driver checks, bios updates, bios default settings. Didn't matter. She switched back to her 1660 Super, rock solid.

Her power supply was a little tight so she brought it back to the shop and we installed an 850Gold in it. Ran stable the entire time at the shop without fault.

Customer got it home and instant black outs on the displays. Even Evga admitted it sounded like RMA time.

I wanted to know WTF. So she brought her PC back in. I tested the gpu in a good machine, no faults. Put her PC back together, no faults in two hours.

Had her bring everything she was attaching to the PC in, including power bars, peripherals, monitors and cables. Rock solid. Took everything home screens still go black. Took every electrical device other than the PC out of the local outlets, still fails.

Had her run an extension cord to a different part of the house, everything runs rock solid..

    KILL ME!

Computer black screen on startup SOMETIMES

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:22 AM PST

So this kind of all started when I put my xmp 1 profile on. My computer will sometimes just boot to a black screen but the lights and fans and computer will be on. Last night I was gaming and my computer just froze and I could hear loud buzzing noise in my headphones then it just shut off. I did a memtest and everything was fine. I also updated bios last night and this morning it booted up fine but somedays it would boot up fine but somedays it would just boot into black screen

building workstation / light gaming pc and need some opinions :)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 04:33 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for some opinions on my next build. My current pc is acting up a little. I had it since 2015 and I notice that the performance is lacking, too, nowadays.

I plan to use my build mainly for programming and light gaming. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money. I can wait for the new 3050 gpu's. I currently use a 970 and it does the job good enough for my purposes.

I want a small formfaktor so I decided to go for the nzxt h1 case. Here are two suggestions that are similalry priced. I just want an opinion from you guys for what build you would go. The intel build uses the new ddr5 ram has a little bit more performance and is just 200€ more than the amd build. I dont know if it's really an improvement or not. I hope I can use this build as long as the build I currently have.

    Thanks for your input :)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:18 AM PST

I can buy a RTX2060 12GB model for around 700 euros right now, or a 3060ti for around 1.2k. Is it worth investing 500 euros more for a 3060ti? Looking to play mostly Valorant 1080p at 240fps+ , or even pushing for 1440p.
