So I have a monitor that has about 160 Hz rating but I can only get 144Hz since I'm using a hdmi cable since my GPU doesn't have a display port now my question is can I use a display port to HDMI adapter to get better Hz or am I just wasting my time typing this ?(probably)

    GTX 1070 Blew Up

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 01:25 PM PST

So last night I was playing games just fine, turn off my computer and go to bed. Wake up, turn computer on to burning smell. I turn the computer off and look inside to find a horrid smell coming from my graphics card. Why would this have of happened? Last month I got a way better power supply but even then, it's been working fine for a month. This graphics card IS 5 years old but I'd still like a reason as to why it blew up?

My neighbor wanted to throw away a pc with i7 4790, I guess it's time for me to upgrade

    Posted: 23 Jan 2022 11:09 PM PST

He didn't know if it worked (it does) and he said I can keep it. The specs are i7 4790, 4gbx2 1333 mhz ram, 290w 80+ Bronze psu and amd Radeon 5450. I wanna use it but upgrade a bit especially the gpu and psu, what would be a good buy that'll fit? I have a budget of around 500$. I'm not looking for anything crazy, just to play some mmo's that are not available on xbox like BDO (it has a console port but it feels extremely clunky on controller so I'd rather play it on pc), Maplestory, lost ark (soon) and maybe some other games I wasn't able to try out until now.

What are some decisions which you regret later after building and using your pc?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 01:10 AM PST

Share some of your decisions or concerns in PC building, which you realize after using the system for few days. These may not be major issues, your PC might still work but the decision or choice is annoying after a while.

    There are 2 for me
    1) Using a mATX motherboard and case. I had issues with upgrading to bigger graphics card and air flow.
    2) Buying m2 nvme SSD for games installation, they are expensive and has lesser storage. I took this decision even though multiple posts mentioned no performance difference compared to cheaper SATA SSD.

How often do PC components need to be replaced, such as PSU and cooler?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:29 AM PST

For example, I built my current PC 7 years ago, so most of the components are at least 7 years old. My Seasonic PSU has a 7 year warranty and my Corsair water cooler has a 5 year warranty.

Does that mean I should be replacing these components as they age beyond their supported warranty periods, even if there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them yet?

My PC sounds like a Boeing 737 MAX ready for takeoff

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:27 AM PST

    Build Help:

I built my PC about a little while ago when I was able to get my hands on a GPU. I stripped my old PC for RAM, SSD, and old HDD. When I put it together, I found that it runs like a dream. I'm mostly playing older games like Tomb Raider and Overwatch. 144 FPS on max settings barely gets the GPU and CPU past 60° C.

Only problem: I bought the updated Antec P82 Flow case because it came with 4 included 140mm fans. The reviews were mixed, but it turns out that they're loud enough to wake the dead. The included fans are 3 pin, not PWM. The included controller has a switch on the case that sets the fan speed and it's loud even on the low setting.

I decided to sell my old GPU, so I now have an additional $300 US to spend on making my build tolerably quiet. Here's the initial build:

Should I just get 4 Noctua A14 PWM 140mm fans to swap out the included case fans? Or should I just get a new case? Is the stock cooler for my 5600x CPU a problem too?

Help with XMP and ram slots

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 04:28 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    -Asrock z690 steel legend

    -G skill trident Z neo 2 x 16gb (new ram)

-G skill ripjaws V series 2x8gb (old ram)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I'm having some issues getting XMP to work on my computer.

A bit of background. I attempted to upgrade my ram a few days ago, and I'm under the impression that one of the sticks from my new ram was defective and damaged my 4th ram slot. I was able to boot with one of the new ram sticks in my 2nd slot, but not with the other. After realizing one of the ram sticks was likely defective I tried to boot with my old ram, which wouldn't work. I tried booting from slots 2 and 4 and it wouldn't post. I tested my old ram on slot 2 and they both worked fine. the problem appears to be with slot 4.

I have since reinstalled my old ram into slots 1 and 3 but now I'm unable to get XMP to work. if I set up a profile my computer refuses to post and the boot guard resets my bios settings to defaults to get it to boot properly. Not sure why it won't work. I updated my bios to the most recent version to see if that would help but had no luck.

I'm basically looking for help troubleshooting and wondering what steps I can take to figure this out. also curious if a bad ram stick can indeed damage a ram slot because I've gotten mixed messages on this, but really I don't see what else could have caused the damage. thanks for any help.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've updated the bios and inspected the ram slot for physical damage (which I found none of)

    Affordable chairs options in Europe?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 05:08 AM PST

I've recently been looking at options for desk chairs. I've got a rather sensitive back so I was looking mostly at eego-style chairs. That being said, I'm a student so don't have a huge budget.

I've looked at the IKEA options (Matchspel and Markus), but they're out of stock and knowing IKEA here they won't have then anytime soon. Furthermore, I've been looking at JYSK's ABILDAA but I'm not sure about its quality (also given the much higher price compared to IKEA). Most other affordable options that I see recommended online are often not available here in Europe. I've already looked for used HMs and Steelcases but with no luck.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

Best 280mm Radiator to get if I'm just going to put 2 Noctua NF-A14 on it?

    Murphy's law

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 08:03 AM PST

So I've had weirdest thing happen to me today.

Just this morning I was reading reddit post about recent increase in EVGA GPUs dying recently, especially 1070s and 1080s, which seemd weird to me but it is what it is.. After I came back from work and pressing my power button I've smelled melted plastic in the air, after opening my case I've noticed it was coming from my precious 1070..

After removing backplate I wasn't able to locate any area of heat damage or anything similar but there was one specific spot between front plate and PCB it self that smelled the most, and also after comparing it to online pictures I could find I've noticed that there are 2 capacitators(I guess they are called that) missing, and that there was slight discoloration around it. So now my question is, does anyone know what is this area on PCB designed for and is there any hope of actually fixing the card?

    Pictures for comparison

Thermal paste (SYY) is drying every 2/3 monthes on my GPU, any lasting thermal paste ?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:22 AM PST

Hey, around 7 months ago I repadded my 3080Fe, was working great but after a few monthes temperatures were spiking to 100 degrees C on hotspot and fan went crazy, I opened it up and saw that pretty much all the thermal paste I put was dried up, so I put some back, and here we are, 3 monthes later, like the first time I am pretty confident that most of it is gone. So I was wondering if there is any thermal paste which would last longer ? Because I don't know how to chose between arctic mx, kryonaut, of nth1 Your help will be appreciated. Thanks :)

Need assistance finding a USB Hub

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 09:16 AM PST

The location I am putting my computer in will make accessing the back inconvenient. Rather than running usb extension cables to a more convent location I am thinking of one USB hub with multiple ports

I have a USB-C port that says SS20 so that is the port I would want to run the hub to.

I will need a mix of USB-C and the old style on it.

Is there any way to move only OS(Windows) to new disc?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 08:54 AM PST

So I have 1TB HDD and realized how slow Windows and not only it boots up. After that I decided to buy a 512GB m2 SSD to move the OS and some of the working apps on it.

But, firstly, I decided to move Windows, because it'd been a pain in the butt for me with its slow boot for a too long time. I've looked up a lot of videos and articles on how to move OS from old disc to a new one, but most of them are just cloning the disc. Another instance, when new disc is smaller than old one, is just to clean the old one so everything in it fits the new disc. All of these guides were useless since my hard drive is full of important files and I can't get rid of them.

I thought of using external storage to temporarily store files in the old disc so I can just clone Windows to the SSD. But the thing is that I don't know which exact files are used to run Windows and which ones I can "get rid of". Idk if I can do that all by myself.

Could you please help me with that problem or come up with another solution for it?
