Simple Questions and Help Thread - Week of December 5th, 2021

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 06:54 AM PST

Welcome to the Simple Questions thread, for questions that don't need their own thread, or to stand in for "Help" submissions. We still recommend you use the search, FAQ/Wiki on the sidebar, or even a Bing search before asking. Also please post general tech support related questions on /r/techsupport. Be sure to check out our new help subreddit, /r/WindowsHelp

Some examples of questions to ask:

    • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

    • How can I install Windows 11?

    • Can you recommend a program to play music?

    • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

I am not a bot, this was not posted automatically.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 Launch Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, it likely has the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Mac guy here. I just bought a gaming PC laptop. Do PC’s still not come with a legit copy of Windows or registration code to allow for a complete reinstall? If not, should I perform any kind of clone of my system, before using it, to preserve a clean install in case I need to revert to it?

My questions are kind of all over the place, but my main concern is about computer viruses and/or other weird occurrences after various installs not playing nice together. On my Macs, I make clones of my systems before updating so I can always revert, but I always have access to clean macOS installs. How does Windows work on this regard when you buy a PC? Does my copy of windows come with a registration code that would allow me to redownload or reinstall fresh if I needed/wanted to? I want to ask now before I start using my laptop so I can perform some actions now, such as making a clean clone of it, in case that is any kind of Windows reinstall alternative since I am not buying a retail version of Windows.

    Thanks!

Is there any step during Window Install process and before drivers are loaded that requires user input?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 05:56 AM PST

My laptop crashed earlier while it was updating Windows (left it running overnight and forgot to plug it in). Apparently, while my laptop can still boot up and start Windows as usual, something went wrong and a bunch of my processes are likely corrupted now. I can't start System Restore. I can't modify Boot Configuration. SFC /scannow broke after reaching around 50%. That hasn't happened again yet, but I got a BSoD with "CRITICAL PROCESS DIED" as well. Since neither chkdsk /r nor dism helped, it looks like it's time for an Upgrade Repair.

However, another major issue that my laptop's screen died a month ago. Ever since, I have been using an external monitor as a temporary replacement. Based on what I've seen, the display won't switch to the external monitor until the corresponding (graphic, probably?) drivers are loaded: the laptop still uses its original, dead screen during boot-up process until Windows starts loading in, or in Window Safe-Mode since it apparently doesn't load that driver.

That brings me to the question in the title: is there any step during Window Install process and BEFORE drivers are loaded that requires user input? Because the drivers aren't loaded during the install process until nearly the end, I assume that my laptop can't use the external monitor until then. That means if there is any step that requires user input, even something as simple as clicking a "Next" button or pressing Enter to continue, I won't be able to do it (since I can't see anything). I remember that there are several steps that requires user input at the end, but I can't remember if those happen before, or after graphic drivers are loaded (which can be seen as your resolution changes).

I'm hoping that there isn't and I can just leave my laptop running until it finishes installing windows and loading graphic drivers, but I can't be totally sure and I certainly don't want to risk it. Does anyone know? Thank you very much in advance
