I need help picking a laptop

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 02:42 AM PST

    (copied from pcmasterrace)

So yeah I'm a student and my laptop recently died. After playing a few rounds of Team Fortress and Need For Speed: Carbon it finally decided to give up after 4 years of valiant service. It wasn't really the best and ran like a slightly better toaster so my parents decided to get me a new laptop. I want a laptop that had at lest 8 gigs of ram, 4 cores with hyper-threading and graphics that don't suck.

I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to computers. I've watched enough youtube videos to know how to build a pc but when it comes to laptops, I have absolutely no clue as to what I should choose. I need some help.

Some quick background, I'm in my 4th year of animation and currently working on my thesis. my current laptop is dying on me so I'd need something with at least 32gb ram and a good processor. Looking for a strong laptop/quiet ~$1500 CAD range. For work as a programmer and light gaming.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 02:58 AM PST

    Hello,

I am starting a new job as a developer and I have to buy a laptop for it. It's my first software job, and I have no idea what I need so I just want a laptop as performant as possible. The company is being vague when I request specs, telling me whatever I buy should be sufficient(talking to HR person, and they likely don't know?).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:~$1500 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Preferrably new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Quiet is pretty important to me. I am split between getting a 2-in-1 or not. I don't want it to cost me performance, so preferably not a 2-in-1. But if there is a 2-in-1 that is within and budget and doesnt suffer too much performance, i will consider it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, as long as it's not incredibly heavy(carrying it to work)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, general software dev(no 3d rendering to my knowledge), animation in opentoonz
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Warcraft 3, minecraft
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and reliable build quality.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like something that lasts me ~3 years.

Looking for a laptop for Music Production under $1000. Ability to game would be a plus but not a main concern.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 11:12 AM PST

I don't know much about laptops but I've heard that I should get 16GB of ram but 8 can do the job. When it comes to other specs I'm not sure what I need so I'm hoping someone knows more than me. Laptop speakers aren't a main concern because I will mainly be using headphones.

Preferably I would like something that has room for an external mouse, audio interface and midi keyboard and is capable of multitasking since I've heard using a DAW can require a computer that can handle background tasks as well as the program currently in use. I've noticed some 8GB ram laptops either have 2 4GB adding up to 8 and some have just one single 8GB piece so I'm not sure which is better.

I'm hoping to spend a total of $1000 with tax included but I'm willing to spend a little more if the difference is worth it in the long run.

I will not travel with it too often so the weight is not a concern either, I actually prefer clunkier laptops because they feel more durable but a size 14"-15.6" screen is a preference.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I know it's supposed to give me what I want but I have already gotten the new MacBook 16. It's extremely different compare to the window in a lot of ways. I can say there's a lot of good point about it as there's not much fan noise and the battery life is fantastic. The only issue I have with it is how I am so not used to it as there multiple things that piss me off. Some of them are websites that my school uses are having issues with it. Also, the stupid see-all open tab thing wtf is wrong with it. Then is the accessibility of the document, why is it so hard to find. Should I return this thing and get an XPS 15 - 17, some ultrabook, or any other kind of device?

Do I need a rtx 3060 or not?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 10:45 AM PST

I am not into gaming in my laptop. If I want to I can use Geforce Now. But I want a fast cpu like AMD 5600h or 5800h. I am open for suggestion for a better value cpu if there is any.

But I always come across laptops with these cpu's with Nvidia 30 series graphic cards. Do I need a graphics card at this level? I want to learn game development and I will use Unity and Unreal Engine for hobby.

I have found Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with AMD 5600h cpu and Nvidia 3060 graphics card. And it's 1200 euro in Germany right now.
I don't want to give that much money. Do I need that graphics card or should I look for lower budget laptops? Any suggestions?

Laptop charger for Lenovo + Apple laptops

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 09:51 AM PST

Hi, I have a Lenovo Yoga that uses a 65W USB-C power adaptor and a Macbook Air that uses a 30W power adaptor.

I think the voltage is different on both? https://i.imgur.com/H26CO3g.jpg

Does anyone have recommendations on a laptop charger I can use for both of them when I'm traveling?

    Thank you!

Looking for a laptop to edit on (Premiere Pro + After Effects) - I don't edit in 4k so 1080p is the goal

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:48 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£1500 GBP max, would like to go lower or around £1k if possible
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Preferably new, unless a specific refurbish shop in the UK is recommended & regarded
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I think that performance would probably be the major concern - battery life and build quality can be somewhat sacrificed.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Portability would be nice but isn't a necessity.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-15in is preferred to 16in+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Premiere Pro + After Effects are the most demanding - I also use Davinci Resolve, Photoshop, Illustrator + Audition
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not necessary
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Not necessary either
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My job is as a video editor and I'd like something portable that can carry the weight of my desktop sufficiently and portably as I travel often.

I do not edit in 4k, nor will I need to edit in 4k. A laptop that can do well with 1080p footage is the goal.

Also, I should hopefully be going on holiday to America at the end of the year, so if it's more beneficial to buy a laptop when I'm there then I'll consider that. Ideally I'd prefer to purchase in the UK.

-This is for my girlfriend who wants to get back into playing sims but doesn't have a laptop. She hasn't played since she was a kid. I want a laptop that will be plenty powerful to run sims for but I don't want to spend way to much because i'll probably be getting her a new macbook air with the m1 chip next christmas to use as a normal everyday computer. However, if a macbook would be ale to handle sims 4 i wouldn't mind just getting one now. Thankyou in advance.

    Laptop for studying

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 03:38 AM PST

I don't need a high end laptop, like 16 gigs of ram and a strong graphics card.

I just want a working laptop, that wont be too slow when doing things like browsing the internet or any other basic stuff.

It would be nice if it had a good screen, that haves good brightness outdoors. Also 1080p would be perfect. The colors don't matter much because I realized that I can't spot a significant difference.

It doesn't have to be lightweight. But it does have to be somewhat thin. It would be great if the keyboard is backlit.

As for the graphic card, anything that haves a similar performance that gt 1030 haves is more than enough.

4 cores cpu would be nice.

    My budget is 400$.

Looking for new Research/Med. Gaming Laptop (US, ~$1500 budget)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 07:10 AM PST

Hello, just a quick background to help guide things: I had a MacBook Pro FOREVER that did most of what I wanted. However, there are a number of programs I need for work that are generally supported only on Windows and swapping onto Bootcamp regularly was a pain in the butt. I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7570 a couple years ago, and it's been a mixed bag so far. The broad capabilities of the computer are fine, but there are a lot of little things that have really left a lot to be desired.

A couple of the things that have really gotten under my skin:
-Poor battery life/battery died twice in two years.
-Power jack has now died 3 times in two years.
-Trackpad stopped clicking (so, click and drag doesn't work anymore).
-Runs really really hot for pretty much any game, FPS gets throttled very quickly. An example of a game that just totally shits the bed pretty quickly was Divinity: Original Sin 2. I had to crank the settings down to looking like Minecraft to get it to run at > 10 FPS.

Anyway, there's enough annoyances with this computer that I am looking into a new model.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500, USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Prefer new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    #1 - Performance, #2 - Build Quality, #3 Battery Life, #4 Form Factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It would be nice, but not the most important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 in.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programs I want to run: Games - I like RPGs, would love something that can run a game like Baldur's Gate 3. Processing - I use a lot of processor heavy programs for statistics and research, so run a lot of code in R, or in programs like ARC GIS/QGIS

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As I mentioned in the intro, I would love something that could play a game like Divinity OS 2 at at least mid-level settings and >24 FPS without overheating and throttling the computer. Baldur's Gate 3 looks awesome and I would love something that could play that.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable Build Quality (This is going to be used A LOT), touch screen would be an ok benefit, but not even close to essential.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thank you for your help!

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 01:48 AM PST

I only need it for school, screen size doesnt matter as long as it isnt incredibly miniscule. I do not intend on gaming on it or really doing anything crazy (but hey let it at least run minecraft).

Whats kinda important to me is that i can move the keyboard around however i want. Even better if its one of those detachable ones.
