Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:12 PM PST So I'm moving into a new home but don't have any networking gear that I'm bringing with me. I might just use regular Xfinity cable Internet for speeds around 50mbps but will upgrade to fiber internet after. It's a smaller home around 1000 sq ft but have a 5000 sq ft lot and there's a studio in the back that also needs internet. I was going to get a mesh router system so I can just have internet everywhere without switching networks and such. Should I get a wifi 6 mesh router or a wifi 5? A 3 pack of wifi 5 routers costs about the same as a 2 pack of wifi 6 routers. Both routers are tri-band. I don't think I'll need more than two routers too since the if I just plug the router in the middle of the home, the whole house should get service and plug one in the studio in the backyard. Not sure where else to post, but what do you guys know about POTS lines? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:00 PM PST Heyyyyy! I do low voltage wiring stuff and I had a customer with an elevator. This particular elevator needs a POTS line before it will even operate (I guess they really want you to have communication in case you get stuck). Anyway, the client had voice service delivered through an ATA. I'm sure you know what an ATA is and does, but I'll just make sure we are all on the same page. An ATA basically brings the phone company's central office into a home or business. It provides dial tone on a pots line right? So whether it's a real landline or an "emulated" landline from an ATA, the end result is the same, a -48vdc voltage, same protocols for dialing, on / off hook, etc. It's the same thing right? Well this elevator didn't work. After time on the phone with the elevator company, they said that the elevator needs a real landline, because if the power goes out and you get stuck in the elevator, then the ATA probably isn't going to work either. So I guess my question is, is how TF does the elevator know the difference? I've been zapped by a real landline and been shocked by the line from an ATA and it feels the same. all of the call signaling is the same, same voltage, so what could be the difference that made the elevator not like the ATA phone line? Blows my mind. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 04:12 PM PST Hi, I have a shop that I need to connect to our main wi-fi but it is only barely able to be picked up by phones and not at all in the office I need it in. What would be the best method to extend the network to there? I get that wired is the best bet but with the buildings and terrain and some near future construction that's not an option. I initially thought a point to point antenna or an outdoor AP closer to the shop but that honestly seems like a lot of work and the point to point may be obstructed by another building in the near future. My current thinking is to get a wireless network adapter with an outdoor antenna and try to position it as best as possible to get signal. Ideally then I'd use network bridging or ICS or whatever the method would be to connect a router/switch to the laptop via ethernet so a few other devices in the shop can connect. Is this a stupid thing to do or is it better/possible to use an outdoor AP as a wifi receiver as that seems like it would be nice but I'm unsure if that's a thing that can be done. Thanks for any suggestions and if you have any questions or just want to make fun of my dumb setup ideas feel free to ask or comment. :) [link] [comments] |
Inconsistent performance across websites Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:55 PM PST How is it that I can stream a 4k 60fps video from YouTube just fine, but I get a 1.6mbps download test result from speedtest.net, and various sites just don't load? If I reboot all my routing equipment things work fine for a bit, then this happens again. This started 4 days ago and I made no changes to the network. My network is arranged like so: modem -[wired]-> OpenWRT v19 on WRT3200ACM -[wireless]-> RE9000(1) -[loooong wired]-> RE9000(2) -[wired]-> PC I set this up by myself but I'm a bit naiive to the finer points of home networking so there's a good chance it is not set up right. It was working fine with the occasional hiccup for 2? years tho. Not sure what could have happened. [link] [comments] |
WiFi is so slow even though the speed is good. Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:51 PM PST I have a good WiFi plan and speeds are good (i think ) https://imgur.com/a/C8RXFRi But everytime I search up something on google , reddit or Instagram, it buffers to hard. Like it takes more time to load the google search , only some posts on reddit or Instagram would be visible and others would be blurred or videos would never play. Is there a way to fix this? (Number of connected devices is very minimum - like 2-3 with not so demanding usage) If I remember correctly, this started to happen after I installed brave browser ( on PC but the WiFi problem occurs on other devices too). Should I change my DNS server address from automatic? Any help is welcome. Also , I face connection problem while I try to open Valorant with 5GHz band. I would be forced to use 2.4 GHz band so that I could get in-game. Is there a solution for this? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Help me choose btw ATT DSL or Verizon LTE Posted: 01 Dec 2021 03:48 PM PST Currently have ATT DSL at 10mbps at $80/ month (I know ridiculous) it's all that has been offered where I live. Verizon is offering me LTE internet at a cheaper price of $40 a month. I like to play online but currently my internet struggles. Thinking about making the switch just wondering yalls opinion [link] [comments] |
I need a router with seperate connections for 2.4 and 5 ghz Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:33 PM PST I previously used to have a router from spectrum that had both 2.4 & 5, but when i upgraded they gave me a new router, apparently it has 2.4 and 5ghz, but it "choses" which devices should connect to which. For me i have tons of smart devices, lights, vaccum, smart plugs that only work with with 2.4 and these smart devices are unable to connect to my new wifi router. Seems like the only choice is to buy a router that has both, can anyone recommend me one that has seperate wifi connections for 2.4 and 5. Something around 100 - 200$ [link] [comments] |
WebPass / EdgeRouter not resolving *own* domain when routed through the WAN Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:22 PM PST I posted about this previously on this sub; but life got in the way, and I haven't had the time to experiment with this issue. Unfortunately, now I have Good Reason to need this to be accessible from the external world. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what's going on: if I hop on my cell-phone and turn off WiFi, everything on my machine resolves (https://ds.ell.io, for example.) However, if I attempt to resolve anything on ``` ❯ ~ curl -I 136.30.12.85:5000 curl: (7) Failed to connect to 136.30.12.85 port 5000: Connection refused ❯ ~ curl -I ds.ell.io:5000 curl: (7) Failed to connect to ds.ell.io port 5000: Connection refused ``` This is driving me absolutely batty. Why is my network reachable from everywhere but on my own network? [link] [comments] |
Any tips to maximize speed on Cat 5 (not 5e) ethernet cable? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:19 PM PST So my home was built about 22 years ago and it is wired with Cat 5, definitely not 5e cable. I have been working on getting the best speed since fishing the cables is not working well. I had to rewire the Cat 5 connectors to the 568B standard, which initially did not work well. I then purchased a better crimping tool and better connectors which improved things. Right now I am getting about 550 Mbits max on a couple of cables I have working. Does anyone have other tips to maximize the speed over Cat 5? Are there other technologies like SFP+ and using the Cat 5 as a DAC cable help any? Most of the runs are between floors and looped from the wiring closet back to the Internet router so add another 50-75 again after a switch. I am going to run at least two new cables and can then run some cables in the attic or crawlspace. The existing Cat5 cables must be looped around studs because I cannot get them to pull a new cable through. Are my speeds in line with other people's experience? I have Gigabit Internet service and would like to maximize the backhaul for my WiFi routers so I can get close to that on Wifi as I am upgrading adapters and eventually routers to WiFi 6e. Most of my really high-speed traffic is on one floor so I do not require Gigabit to every device. But I will want at least Gigabit on a portion of my home network but I know that might not be realistic without new cables or much more expensive WiFi. Thanks for any suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Switch, single cable, two outputs, one connection Posted: 01 Dec 2021 03:30 PM PST Greetings networking comrades, I am facing a very puzzling problem. It seems that this one is very difficult, so maybe the ones that understand the technology of switching can answer this problem. Well my problem is as follows, I have an Ethernet cable going into to a room and I want to have two ethernet outputs from that single cable which will allow me to choose whether I want to sit over one end of the room or at another. So I will only have one single output at any given time. I want to have the option to choose where i sit with my laptop. Now for the life of me, I can't figure out why I can't have this running without one single output being useless. Now what I figured out so far is that the furthest output is the one that keeps working. Maybe it has something to do with the resistance of the wire and the switch measuring it and detecting the resistance of the cables and choosing the biggest resistance, thus the furthest output or maybe I am talking out of my *ss. Any help would be deeply appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
New Motorola MG8725 Disconnects from Activision Servers Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:58 PM PST The issue referenced in this 2yr old post is affecting the new flagship Motorola MG8725 Wifi 6 modem, and possibly the other Motorola Wifi 6 models in select cities. After speaking with Motorola Support, they confirmed they had this problem with previous modems in select cities on the Xfinity network. Apparently Denver CO is one of those cities. The issue presents itself to me by disconnecting from the Activision servers after roughly 3min 30seconds consistently. Other non COD games from different publishers work as expected. Here is a link to a video I created to send to Activision support detailing the issue. I performed all troubleshooting I could on my end. This included: - Port Forwarding all COD ports - Attempting UPnP - Attempting DMZ - Disabling IPv4 firmware firewall - Disabling Norton 360 software firewall Activision Support was limited, and Motorola is trying their best. But with this modem being so new to market there's not a lot to go on. Motorola doesn't even have a support page for it yet. They are suggesting that I may just have to return the modem. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the cause? To me it seems like something timing out. Hoping for a future firmware update so I can get off the crappy Xfinity XB7. Not sure a modem swap is feasible since this is their flagship. Beware of buying the new Motorola Wifi 6 modems if you plan on playing COD titles. [link] [comments] |
Advice: Best Option For Creating A HA Cluster? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 02:59 PM PST So for about 2 or so weeks I been trying to understand clusters and testing them out but running to some road blocks. My ultimate goal is the following:
The following are the proposed options I thought of but would like some advice which option to go with or if there is a better solution. Create a HA webserver cluster by running (3) VM's and setting up LXD cluster among the (3) VM's. Then spin up a LXC and get into the LXC's bash to run/install the control panel and other web server packages.
Create a HA webserver cluster by running (3) VM's and utilize the pcs command line to set up the cluster
Somehow run kubernetes on a VM and create a cluster with some Pod running appache or nginx then get into the bash terminal of the Pod and start installing the control panel.
Any advice would be appreciated, let me know if I'm missing something or if there's just a much better approach than the options I listed :) [link] [comments] |
New construction home network? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:45 PM PST Devices: Cable Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB6121 Router: Netgear Nighthawk AC2600 Switch: Netgear Nighthawk SX10 Ethernet: CAT6a Security:8 Defender 4k cameras with 2TB HD Hi guys I've been brain storming about my new home that is currently being built and need some advice or opinions on the matter. So my plan is I have 7 rooms I want to provide a plug in ethernet port. They are a mixture of upstairs and downstairs "2 story home". I have a pantry that is located almost exact center of the home on the first floor. I would like to route all of my security camera cables and ethernet lines here to house my home network. There will be 2 cameras on each corner of the home. The supplied camera cable lines are 60ft and the whole home width is 72ft so I feel like no extensions will be needed. I would like to place my router in the main living room which is also pretty centered in the home for the best available wifi. I want to have the modem, switch, and dvr in the pantry. I will have 2 lines going to the router in the main living room for send and receive lines from the modem and to the switch. Does this sound like it will work out ok in the new home or do I need to make some adjustments? I felt like the pantry is the best location due to heat in the attic and I don't want it to be that visible to the eye. I know I have some overkill items for the speed I am getting with cable at the moment but in my area they plan to switch to fiber here soon and want to be ready when they do. [link] [comments] |
I want to replace a Coaxial port with an Ethernet port. How much would this cost me? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:38 PM PST After trying (and failing) to install MoCa due to insane stipulations that my internet is run by, I would like to just get an Ethernet port installed straight from my router. I've been trying to research this, but can't find any actual quotes for one singular Ethernet port, that's around 100ft away from the router (router is first floor my room is second floor) Anyone else do this? I'd be curious to see [link] [comments] |
Looking at getting a stopgap AP or two until Wifi6E Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:20 PM PST I am about to order two EAP-245V3's for a small mesh in my place, two of them will cover the whole house perfectly. Does anyone not recommend this action for any reason? I am just looking for decent 5.8ghz performance, 2.4ghz as well. [link] [comments] |
Connecting smart device to 2.4GHz Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:15 PM PST Hello all, I have very limited technology skills, so bare with me. My roommate has the Spectrum SAC2V1K router and it supports both 5GHz and 2.4GHz. It doesn't show up as two different networks though like previous ones I've had, so 5GHz is the default it connects to. I cannot get my device that requires 2.4GHz to connect to my wifi and I'm not sure what to do. Could any of you give me some recommendations on how to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Asus DSL-AC68U connected to the internet but clients are unable to access it Posted: 01 Dec 2021 02:14 PM PST Hi Setups been working for a year but now clients on both Lan and WiFi are unable to connect to the internet Quick explanation is I have a VirginMedia superhub 3 in modem mode which is outputting internet into a Asus DSL-AC68U Reset both this morning as an issue occured and unable to get devices back working. Plugging a laptop straight into the superhub works fine and the Asus router has access to the internet as it is able to ping addresses and perform firmware upgrades which I've done. When a laptop connects to the Asus WiFi it gets the correct IP address from dhcp 192.168.1.xxx and gateway looks correct so unsure what the issue could be Restarted both devices multiple times and ethernetting in causes the same issue Any help would be greatly advised thankyou [link] [comments] |
Need help for twin house setup Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:49 PM PST Hi, we just bought the other side of a twin house making a total of 7000sq ft and the signal is pretty weak there. Since I see no way to wire Ethernet between the 2 houses. Would a wireless mesh setup be the best idea, if yes, would tri-band with wireless backhaul more beneficial than a dual band without backhaul? Important use : Gaming and downloads. Flat Ethernet cable - are they really so bad? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:46 PM PST I just tried connecting my MacBook Pro 2017 with a flat - cat8 15m ethernet cable and the performance are really bad, a basic online Speedtest show me max speeds of 10mb/s up/down vs 100mb/s that I usually have when connected by Wi-Fi. Could interference be the problem? (My cable pass through a 3m tube in the wall with about 20 others cables connecting my tv, home theater, console, NAS ecc.) Maybe I just bought a crappy cable, not really cat8 standard? I'm pretty confused right now. [link] [comments] |
Xfinity Xfi with Orbio RBR50 - who to ditch? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:55 PM PST Hi, I currently have a non-optional Xfiniity Xfi router/modem with a Network Orbi RBR50 plugged in to it with one satellite. Have a gigabit data plan with no cap. Currently they are both creating their own networks, although all devices are connected to the Orbi network. I've gleaned that I should probably put the Xfi in to bridge mode and have just one network, but I recognize that the Orbi I have is getting a bit long in the tooth. I'm considering my options as:
