Can Tablets without WiFi still be marked stolen? (Buying 2nd hand not a thief)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:52 PM PST

Looking to get a WiFi only Galaxy Tab S6 Lite on eBay. It's from a reputable seller, but the advice I've gotten for phones is to avoid buying 2nd hand bc of how quickly stolen ones recirculate.

I believe this is all done by IMEI though - which I don't think WiFi only Android devices have. Is buying 2nd hand in this case safe?

In Android 12 I no longer get parking notifications in Google Maps

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:54 AM PST

Anyone know why? If you go to save parking location it used to have a notification, and then another when your location was about to expire that no longer happens. I checked and that setting is turned on in the app.

    Android 11 Sensor Problem

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:42 PM PST

I have a Zenfone 6 and I ran into an issue with my gyro and proximity sensors not working in Android 11. I then downgraded to stock Android 9 and all my sensors started working again. I then tried a clean flash of Android 11 and was met with the same sensor problem as before.

I thought maybe I'd have to flash the persist.img file from the working Android 9 firmware on my device to Android 11. Unfortunately that did not work.

Any ideas of how to fix this? Any other troubleshooting ideas that will allow me to run A11 with working sensors?

Since my phone updated I keep getting this notification for RIF and I can't figure out what exactly it's telling me to do. Help?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:45 PM PST

    The notification says...

    "Associate Reddit links

Tap "Add link" and check all the boxes, to allow RIF to open Reddit links by default. Required since Android 12.

You may have to repeat this after app updates, due to an Android bug."

    Android Conversations

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:37 PM PST

Is android supposed to "decide" itself which messages/contacts should be conversations as far a notifications are concerned?

My Pixel 6 Pro is randomly moving messages in the messaging app and WhatsApp to conversations, but the issue then is they all default as silent. Meaning I either have to change to default and add a tone, mark them as not conversation which leads to lots of individual notification channels, or clear the app cache/storage.

    Is this normal?

Help with freeing up storage space?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:20 PM PST

(My phone is a Samsung J3 running Android 9.)

My phone is very low on storage space, even though i move all my photos, videos, music, text files, and all of the apps that I can onto my SD card. When I look at the device care storage, it says my apps that I cant move add up to about 4 gigabytes, but 15.85 gigs out of 16 are used up. Is there anything I can do to free up more space?

Fingerprint sensor is getting hot while charging or during everyday usage

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:10 PM PST

As in title, the fingerprint sensor gets to about 70℃ or something like that. I bought this Moto G8 Power 2 months ago from repair service and today my mother informed me that she can't unlock her phone with fingerprint and that it's very hot. I've restarted it and it gets hot couple seconds after booting up. Is it possibly shorted?

How to check if Play Services are blocked on a network?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 03:30 PM PST

I've been having an occasional issue on a guest wifi network at work where I won't get any notifications until I disconnect from that wifi network. It is my understanding that most of the notifications on an Android device come from Play Services which led me to believe that may be blocked. But my workplace IT group tells me they do not block that (they block tons of other stuff, though).

Is there any way to test/verify if it is accidentally being blocked or something? Perhaps with a ping command to some server from a laptop or something? It wouldn't be the first time something was being blocked by accident.

    Thanks all.

Transferring iPhone 6 data to Pixel 5a

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:32 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I just received my Pixel 5a, excited to give this thing a try. I'm switching from an iPhone 6 I bought four years ago and am having some difficulty in transferring necessary data (texts, contacts, etc).

When I do the direct connection, my Pixel tells me the phone is not supported. It then redirects me to www.android.com/switch where it instructs me to download Google Drive on my iPhone. Problem is, I need iOS 13.0.0+ to install Google Drive and the iPhone 6 has been left at 12.5.5 since Apple decided to stop supporting it.

I did some more research but I can't find any definitive way to transfer my data that seems legitimate. There are so many apps, I'm not sure which one to trust.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Is there a way to make an Android tablet "idiot proof" / kiosk mode / old-person-mode for video calls and media streaming?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:16 AM PST

My 80 year-old dad is about to go to short-term rehabilitation for a few weeks - he is bedridden right now. There are severe restrictions on visitors, so he will be alone in his room for much of the time. He very much enjoys when I put old shows on my tablet using YouTube or PleX (the Honeymooners, Fawlty Towers, etc.). He also enjoys doing video calls with his kids and grandkids.

The problem is that he has no ability to do anything complex on the tablet. So, if he is watching a movie and accidentally brings down the notification panel, he is lost. He can't do even the most simple task like swipe through the apps and launch one. He has some baseline dementia, so trying to get him to read or follow instructions will be difficult.

But if there was some sort of "kiosk mode" where he could have just a couple options - Whatsapp or Facetime for video calls and PleX for movies/TV, it might work.

Is there a good way to lock down an Android tablet in this way? Something else I'm not considering (e.g., Google or Alexa device)?

    Thanks.

    App deletion

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:32 PM PST

So I was wondering that simply holding and pressing uninstall on an app icon completely removes it from your phone. Sometimes, I have seen some folders in my sd root or internal storage that was part of the app I deleted. Do I need to go deeper into my phone files to fully uninstall an app?

Amazon Music streaming via Alexa huge battery drain since Android 12

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:22 PM PST

I use my phone (Pixel 3A XL) to cast Amazon Music via wifi to my Echo dot. On Android 11, it wasn't a noticeable battery drain. On Android 12, I can stream for ~1 hour and my battery will go from 88% to 17% within 4 hours afterwards. According to Settings -> Battery, Amazon Music continues to eat battery life after I stop streaming. What gives? Is there any way to fix this other than force-stopping the app each time? (Confirmed Amazon Music eating battery via Settings -> Battery usage. Alexa app itself is not showing up as a culprit (under 8% usage))

Why is GBoard text correction just awful?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:07 PM PST

GBoard is extremely inconsistent with it's quality of text correction (if at all). I constantly finding myself actually Googling the correct spelling because GBoard does not suggest the correction at all.

e.g. Earlier had to Google how to spell "Anesthetized" because GBoard would not correct "Anethesized".

Is there a setting I have overlooked? I have Text Correction and Auto Correction yet still get this inconsistency with my experience.

Nightjar device signed out of my Google account

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:05 AM PST

I'm pretty sure this is not the proper community to ask this question however I'm hoping to be pointed in the right direction. On my Google account under devices it shows my Lenovo smart clock and it shows it as signed in which is correct however under devices that are signed out it shows a device called nightjar. When I look up nightjar a lot of the results link back to Lenovo and so I'm wondering if this night jar device that is showing on my Google account was my first Lenovo smart clock? I just have never seen a device called nightjar sign in to my account. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help or offer any suggestions

    Android Telematics App SDK Integration

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:46 AM PST

Hey devs, wondering if there is someone out here who has worked on/developed telematics apps and can integrate an open-source SDK tracking and safe-driving app to collect location, driving style, driving behaviors, driving patterns, lifestyle patterns, vehicle data, and monitor car crashes.

Please contact me if you can, experienced, interested and have a portofolio to that effect. OR point me to someone or people... :-)

    Thanks guys.

    Chat Features

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:20 AM PST

I noticed that i sent a message and instead of it saying delivered it said sent. (That means they haven't got it yet) and it kept saying they were offline. So i decided to send the message as an sms so they can receive it. Now i tried every i can think of to get chat features to start up again. But now the text bubbles are light blue and still sending in sms mode? Does that mean that they disabled chat features? Or is it something I'm not doing properly??
