Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:52 AM PST I emailed my ISP because I was having slow download speeds. I pay for 250Mbps down and was only getting 30Mbps for a couple of days. They emailed back saying "I see here that your residence is ready to be switched over to our fiber network so let's see if that fixes your problem" this is something I've been waiting for forever. I'd finally have gigabit speeds. After setting up an appointment and messaging people the moment has finally came. I received a email 20 minutes later from someone else in the office (probably a tech) to let me know my house is in fact not ready yet to be hooked up to the fiber and to call him instead to help me with the current problems I was having. That ruined my morning Edit just got emailed back from the tech showing me what they have completed and when my section of town will finished. Just discovered they decided to work on another side of town for 2022 and they won't be able to finish mine until the beginning of 2023. My side of town is the LAST section of fiber. So ruined the rest of my 2021 and 2022 considering I'll be moved to another city by then. [link] [comments] |
100 year old house and wifi signals Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:34 AM PST forgive my formatting, on mobile my house is about 108 years old (extremely old for Canada) and due to this theres tons of issues with the internet. theres stuff in the walls like lead and whatnot because thats what they used to build with. due to this each room is like a faraday cage. the only room with good internet seems to be the room that the router is in. i can go to the next room and pit only that dividing wall between my phone and the router, and the whole thing will simply disconnect. its genuinely ridiculous. this has been going on since we moved in, and we've updated our routers 4 times, including just a few weeks ago. nothings helped. we also have a tp-link extender (i think thats what its called), which helps marginally but its quite old. we've contacted our isp about this several times, and each time theres nothing they really can do. we cant move the router very many places, as it needs a wire that runs out of the wall to even function, which only exists in 2 rooms :/ is there anything that can be done? we don't have the largest budget in the world but this is getting infuriating. edit: im not very knowledgeable in the different terms for topics like this, sorry if i get overly confused in the replies [link] [comments] |
Really weird ISP networking: can't reach friend's IP directly, but can with a VPN Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:40 AM PST Basically what the title says. A friend of mine lives on the same university campus, but despite having everything set up in terms of portforwarding, we cannot reach each other directly using the other's public IP address (using Since peak traffic in the evening will usually slow down the VPN and cause lag, we would prefer a solution that does not require any sort of proxy. We have already tried most of the standard tricks (flushing the DNS cache, changing both of our default DNS servers in the Windows settings) with little success. Do you guys have any ideas? Residential shield vs unshielded considerations Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:06 AM PST Planning to run ethernet throughout my house. 30 yr old, 2 story, only one entry point for cable internet provided by Spectrum. Going to run Cat6A and deciding on shielded vs unshielded. I feel like shielded would be nice, even if a little overkill for residential. However, it seems complex as far as terminating and grounding and all that. Is it worth doing the shielded and if so, can anyone point me to a good start to finish tutorial? Haven't bought anything yet but would hate to get supplies and then run everything just to find out that I mucked it all up. [link] [comments] |
Followup to ATT BGW320-500 Hidden Interfaces Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:37 AM PST I posted a couple weeks ago having found a "hidden interface" or duplicate web-gui on 192.168.254.254. Here's the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/qtkkqs/attn_att_fiber_bgw320500_users_does_anyone_else/ I have found some more interesting hosts and am wondering if it's the same for others with this ATT gateway, and what to make of it. The hosts are at 192.168.0.0 and 192.168.0.255. My LAN is 192.168.0.0/24 . Yes, there's hosts exactly where there shouldn't be, at the network & broadcast. https://i.imgur.com/wcp1cKa.png Both hosts shown responding with RST to a SYN on port 80 TCP. https://i.imgur.com/rIKb9FF.png Here are some logs showing these addresses. I'm also wondering if there are additional hosts at 192.168.254.0/24 , as it seems there's some firewall/filter blocking access to anything but 192.168.254.254. https://i.imgur.com/XCRrUUS.png All available firewall/packet filter options are disabled. Trouble with Punch Down Tool on Patch Panel Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:17 AM PST I am trying to install a patch panel for my home network. I am working with a punch down tool for the very first time but I'm having trouble it. It is not seating the wires very well and it also seem to be damaging the punch block. I'm thinking it's the wrong tool – or at least the wrong blade. http://gofile.me/3mZUL/AUsPF7M9N Here's the patch panel I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0060RUTLC?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details … and here's the punch down tool: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0069LSDJE?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details I have the punch down tool set to low impact. Googling around, I'm reading that there are two predominant blades: "110" and "Krone". I think my tool only does 110. Do I need one that does Krone? Or am I just doing it wrong? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
AT&T Fiber Wi-Fi Unable To Connect To Laptop Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:55 AM PST So, I recently switched from Spectrum Internet to AT&T Fiber. I was given a BGW-320 and it works fine on every device in the home except for my Dell Latitude E7240. The adapter on this laptop is Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260. I have reset the adapter on the laptop many times, I have power cycled the BGW-320 many times, I have attempted to update the drivers on the laptop but they say they are up to date, I have forgotten the network and re-entered the information, I have performed a network reset on the Windows Network & Internet Settings. Is anyone else having this issue? Can someone please help? Thanks! Edit- To make matters more confusing to me, the laptop would connect intermittently for about a month but would lose connection after only minutes. [link] [comments] |
Accessing camera in VPN client network Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:24 AM PST I have a camera in the garden that is remote from my home. It is a TP-link C200 camera, it is possible to stream it locally over rtsp like rtsp://<user>:<pass>@<camera's IP>:554/stream1. The remote router is a 4G router. I connected it over PPTP VPN to my home router('s DDNS name). I also forwarded rtsp port 554 for the camera's local IP so it can be accessed from outside.I want to access it from my home. The camera has static ip 192.168.8.110. The router has local IP 192.168.8.1. Public IP is unknown to me currently. It should not be a problem since this remote router is connected over PPTP to my home router Asus. It can see this connetion as: 192.168.10.2 (85.237.234.29). How do I connect to that camera from my home network? What route to add in the router? I tried adding in the home asus router the following routes: 192.168.8.0/24 via 192.168.10.2, interface WAN (wtf is this - i had to select between lan, wan, man) Not working: rtsp://<user>:<pass>@162.168.8.110:554/stream1 rtsp://<user>:<pass>@192.168.8.1:554/stream1 rtsp://<user>:<pass>@85.237.234.29:554/stream1 [link] [comments] |

Good pings then sudden timeouts Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:43 AM PST I've tested this around the house and it's not a hardware issue with my pc. It happens at seemingly random times throughout the day- it could be fine for an hour+ then have a time out, other times it's as bad as this.. 1 time out isn't noticable on anything but gaming (which I do), multiple timeouts break calls entirely. YT/Netflix etc continue to work fine. (I am pinging google). I called my ISP.. they're calling me tmrw. But it keeps getting worse, anything I could do or any help to provide my ISP would be great Reply from 142.251.39.110: bytes=32 time=27ms TTL=57 Reply from 142.251.39.110: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=57 Reply from 142.251.39.110: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=57 Request timed out. Will a second router help here? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:36 AM PST So me and the wife just got a new smart tv and have been issues with it and the kasa plugs we have set up around the house. Hardwired the tv to the router last night and it seemed to fix that but all our kasa plugs have just gone crazy, not responding or going offline randomly. I have a second router sitting in the closet and was looking at how to hook it up and seems like it's pretty easy but not sure if having a second router would really help take some of the strain off the first router and hopefully get everything back to working normally. Just to clarify here everything we have currently connected to the internet Both our phones Smart tv(hard wired) Google home mini PS4(hard wired)-hasnt been turned on since we set up TV Two laptops but both have been off since we set up tv Probably around 10 kasa plugs (the wife has gone a bit overboard with using these things) Thanks for any help [link] [comments] |
Having trouble setting up a modem/router combo with only an Ethernet cable. Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:45 AM PST I have the Nighthawk modem/router and it says to plug in the coax cable. My building only has Ethernet ports for the internet and I'm wondering if that's why I can't get the setup to work. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:30 AM PST Hello, I recently upgraded to Quantum fiber and discovered that my previous router, ASUS GT-AC5300, will not work with their service since it doesn't have VLAN tagging on the WAN port. My question is should I bite the bullet and upgrade to something like the Unifi Dream Machine Pro (UDMP) or TP-Link Omada, or should I try a 3rd party firmware on my router? Here is a list from Quantum's web site on what they require: must support, 1 Gps Ethernet WAN port, Ethernet 802.1ad VLAN tagging on the WAN, DHCP with CHAP authentication on the WAN and LCP Echo responses. The other question I have is does the TP-LINK and Unifi equipment support this, I assume is does but want to ask anyway, and am I forced to buy their AP's for WIFI or can I just put an old router into bridge mode? Sorry for the long post and basic question but I have the POS router they gave me but I'm forced to use it right now. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 11:14 AM PST Hello guys, I just bought a Huawei 4G Router 3 Pro(B535-232) and I am looking to buy external antennas for it but can't seem to find any good ones so would like to get suggestions from you guys. The connector is SMA. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Improve WiFi speed in an Airport Extreme? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:28 AM PST I have an Apple Airport Extreme 6th generation and a recently changed to a 200Mbps internet plan. Via Ethernet I get 210Mbps, but with WiFi I get 180Mbps. I measured this with different Apple devices, at different distances, even next to the router. Even though there aren't too many networks around, I also tried several WiFi channels. When I had a 100Mbps plan I got that speed over WiFi. I there a way to to get something closer to the 210 Mbps I get over Ethernet? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:58 AM PST Hello r/HomeNetworking, I am currently running an Archer C7 as the router for our 2 story 3,500 square foot home. Soon my office location will be moving into an area of the basement that is currently being finished out. I want to take this opportunity to improve the network in our home to a mesh. I am considering TP-Link Omada at the moment, but I'm open to suggestions. The room where my office will be in is surrounded by cinderblocks (was a large "crawlspace" are for the home that is being converted into living space). Because of this I am thinking what will be needed is an access point in that room, one outside of that room on the same floor (which is where bonus room is), and then one upstairs for that portion of the home. I believe I will need: Hardware controller x1, Router/Firewall x1, POE Switch x1, Access Points x3 My questions are whether this sounds like an adequate solution for the home? And, can I daisy chain the access points together, or do I need to run individual wires from the switch? The TP-Link EAP265 HD says that it connects extra access points via wifi, but hard wiring them would be significantly better correct? [link] [comments] |
Tenda TX9 Pro not showing some 5GHz wifi channels Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:17 AM PST Hi everyone! I bought a Tenda TX9 Pro, with the aim of using it with an Oculus Quest 2, via Air Link. After replacing the old access point (an older Tenda device) with this new one, I noticed that the data transmission is much more inconsistent: every 10 seconds or so, the latency increases from 3-4ms to over 30-40ms, or even higher. With the previous device, I never had these lag spikes at all. In both cases, my PC is directly connected to the router, and the consistent data transmission speed between the PC and the Oculus Quest 2 is around 120-160mbps (apart from the spikes, obviously). After some troubleshooting, I noticed that the old router was transmitting on channel 157 at 80MHz, while this new one was transmitting on channel 38 at 160MHz. On channels 38-40-42 I can see several other devices, so I figured this could be the problem. I therefore decided to set the Tenda TX9 Pro to channel 157, but here comes the issue: I can only set it to channels 38, 40, 42 or 44. I tried updating the firmware to no avail, and I tried to find a way to set the region of the router (thinking that maybe these channels are not allowed in some countries), but I could not find any way to set the region (I am from Italy, btw). Does anyone have any idea on why this may be? Or as a broader question, is there any other setting that could be leading to these spikes? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 02:35 AM PST Here is the exact cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MZFN6U0/ref=twister_B09LHSJPY2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 It's DSL internet but no landline phones are used so no phone will be sharing this cable with the router. The master socket is a filter with an RJ45 port for internet and a UK phone port that then leaves the property. The routers input is the RJ11. The reason I'm asking is because I've seen warnings about using router extensions but I have no idea when there is a risk of interference and when everything will be perfectly alright. TV hogging the wifi- is it possible and what to do? Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:06 AM PST So our standard internet speed is usually between 50-70mbps. I game regularly with no issues with others in the house streaming videos etc. However whenever a certain TV is turned on and specifically is streaming Netflix etc the speed collapses to around <1-2mbps. This TV is right beside our router and I'm not really familiar enough with network hardware to know if there's something I should be looking at. What could be the possible problem and is there a simple enough solution? Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Dec 2021 09:10 AM PST I'm losing my mind trying to figure out the VLANs/PVIDs for my network. I feel like I'm close but it's beating me. Can anyone spot what I'm doing wrong here: TOPOLOGY: https://i.imgur.com/pUgqutS.png I've basically been starting with VLAN 50 to see if I can get that one working first.. I should be able to replicate the process for everything else. When I hooked up a laptop it pulls the IP 192.168.84.xxx so it's not the right subnet (I should be expecting 192.168.50.xxx right?). I also have no internet access which I assume is my router configuration. I was messing with it last night and I removed port 5 (LAN port) from vlan1 because I'm dumb and had to hard reset the router. These pictures probably not helpful because its just the factory reset: ROUTER VLANS https://i.imgur.com/TNmtFPN.png But I'm really not sure how to set these up either. Would I have vlans 20/30/40/50/60 TAGGED? for port 5? Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I'm close, but no cigar. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:18 AM PST Hi there, sorry if I break any rules. I have read through the community guidelines and tried a few troubleshooting ideas as well as searching through Reddit to see if anyone else had this problem. I have a Netgear CM400 modem and a netgear WNR2000V3 router. Links to manuals: [wnr2000v3](https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WNR2000V3/WNR2000v3_SM_19AUG2010.pdf My set up is normal: coax into modem, modem into router, router into PC and wifi for other devices. Last night, the wifi stopped working. Today, wifi and Ethernet don't work unless I remove the router and just connect directly from modem to PC. With my normal set-up, once things stopped working, the "Ethernet" light on the modem is amber and flickering indicating it's processing traffic and connected to a 100/10 Mpbs device (green means 1000) and the "IP address" light on the router is amber, indicating it can't acquire an IP address. I can connect to my wifi network but there's no internet. There is no internet over Ethernet either. If I plug directly from modem to PC, I have internet, and the "Ethernet" light on the modem is green but flickering. I have tried restarting devices, trying new cables, turning wifi on and off on the router and resetting to factory settings. The netgear rep said that it is probably an IP conflict but wanted $100-200 for tech support since my 90 day complimentary tech support had expired and this isnt a hardware problem that's otherwise covered. I feel like I could buy a new router for that much, but if I could get this fixed in the meantime, that would be great. I went to Google and made sure I don't have static IP addresses on my PC. I read that IP conflicts shouldn't happen unless the router malfunctions. I tried to go to 192.168.1.1 but need to find my username and password. Any help while I continue googling would be appreciated. I'll try to update firmware. [link] [comments] |
Understanding Coax Cable lines. Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:12 AM PST Hello, I recently upgraded my internet to Xfinity's gigabit service which advertises 1.2gb in my area. I purchased the Motorola MB8611 last night and have not decided on a router / mesh system yet. My home is 2400sq not including a 1200sq unfinished basement. I'm reading and learning but realize I don't understand the coax cables running though my home. I don't understand the limitations there, if they should be upgraded, does it matter if Xfinity doesn't upgrade to Fiber and I do etc.. Can I convert a coax cable to an Ethernet connection and does that inhibit speed? As I type this I realize I have more questions than answers lol. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:49 AM PST I've a large 2 story house with a lot of solid walls between rooms. I've already got an advanced network setup but the wifi APs are struggling and I'm thinking of a Mesh setup. I do have two red lines:
I am looking at the TP link stuff but was put off by app requirements and I looked at the google wifi but i've read it needs to be the router which i really don't want.I do like TP link so willing to reconsider them but hoping you lot could give me some alternatives. Thanks in advance. EDIT1: The current APs are hardwired currently (i've an issue with the cabling i cant track down that is limiting them to 100Mb) , additionally the ports I have aren't optimally placed to cover the house there are a couple of extremes where wifi doesn't quite reach hence looking at mesh. Also I'm in the UK, just in case that changes the available products. :) EDIT2: Current APs: * TP-Link TL-WA1201 * TP-Link Archer C7 * TP-Link Archer C9 [link] [comments] |
