Can't decide between MacBook and Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:08 AM PST

    Hey friends,

I need a reliable laptop for personal use and some light business use. No gaming or heavy work. I have used both apple laptops and windows laptops in the past.

I am about to get a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9 with 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM. Or instead I can spend $700 more and get a Macbook Pro 14" 2021 with M1 Pro processor. Or I can just get a Macbook Air 2020 with M1 processor cheaper than both of the above mentioned laptops. Please write your suggestions, recommendations with detailed reasoning.

I will mostly use to fill forms, work on word, excel, PDF and lots of internet browsing.

    Laptop Suggestions

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:44 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      at least 3,000,000KRW(Korean Won)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance - build quality - battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very much.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 or above
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
python and possibly other languages. photo editing and video editing. I do play games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
If possible, League of Legends and some steam games, sometimes GTA 5.For FPS, I play all medium or above - but if the computer spec is available, I play at higher options.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
If every requirement is above average, doesn't matter.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
For now, I'm thinking to have a workstation with mobility. Since I'm an international student studying at the U.S, there is no need to buy a quality desktop and just need high end laptop for long term use to travel back and forth from my home country and the U.S. And my focus on buying a laptop is an efficiency when working on projects and etc. For ASUS ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 15, I'm thinking of i9-10980HK, RTX3070, 32GB Ram,1TB SSD. However, I do need some other recommendations of high end laptops.

Brand new P1 G4 with distorted sounding speakers

What's the difference between these two laptops?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:12 AM PST

So I'm currently planning on buying a new laptop for personal use and was originally going to buy the Dell Latitude 3310 2-in-1 which was half price through the black friday sale. However I recently found a similar laptop by HP for £200 less with almost identical specs. Given at full price the Dell would be over twice the price of the HP model what is it about the Dell laptop that makes it better and therefore worth the value compared to the HP, is it just that its a 2-in-1 or is there something else I'm overlooking?

    Screen compatibility

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:10 AM PST

    Hi all

Quick question will a laptop with 1920x1080 resolution be compatible with a screen with 2560 x1440?

Will the laptop be able to out put to the screen with higher resolution?

    Decent laptops under $500?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:21 AM PST

Am buying my first personal laptop. Looking for a laptop that has good screen clarity (important) is decently fast and has atleast 4 GB. Other than that, i'm not super picky but would like something as dependable as can be.

    Suggestions are appreciated.

search for a new laptop - college student/casual day-to-day use [preferably under $1k, lower the better, but I can waiver if there are some nice commodities to consider :)]

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:19 AM PST

*Not well-versed in tech stuff/College student*

I'm a college student, likely pursuing more after, and I really want/need a new laptop [current one is a 13" early 2015 macbook pro, and she's struggling]. I only use my laptop for casual (shopping online, googling dumb stuff, watching twitch streamers 24/7) or school stuff. The only things that really run on my laptop are discord, notion and SPSS (research for school). I've only known this single macbook which I've had since high school and I've been thinking: is it time to look for an alternative to the basic macbook?

Main things I'm looking for (I'm also not well versed in tech stuff)

    - good battery life

    - not too heavy since I'd have to carry it in my bookbag (my macbook is under 5 lbs)

    - security that does well against viruses (sometimes my relatives will borrow my laptop and click all sorts of silly things *ngl I cry about it*)

Need a replacement for MBP retina 2012

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:10 AM PST

Hello. I have an old mbp retina 2012 which is pretty slow in 2021 or maybe just in macOS..) so I want to upgrade it.

I need a reliable laptop (for 5-10 years) with a good screen and performance. Mostly for office tasks, sometimes for Photoshop, Lightroom. Also rarely I want to play games like Diablo or the Witcher, etc

Thinking about -Mbp 14 m1pro (I think it's very powerful and pretty reliable according to my Mac, it has a great screen, battery life and so on but… there is no chance that I can play on it (in D2 resurrected or horizon zero dawn and so on)

-Asus zephyrus M16 - nice but a lot of reviews about thermal and WiFi issues (more heat less reliable?)

-Lenovo legion 5 15 inches -MSI creator or stealth idk (with rtx3060) (my last msi with gtx970 died after a year so I am afraid)

    Any suggestions ???

    Fair laptop price

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:01 AM PST

I'm reposting this because I couldn't see it pop up after I posted it earlier but anyways let's start.

I Have had this Asus ROG gl502vm laptop for awhile and was thinking of selling it so that I could get a upgrade I was looking for its price on ebay and it sells for around $700 but I thought this price seemed a bit too high so I wanted to ask what the people of r/laptops think is a good price for my laptop.

    Here or the specs-

    Processor- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @2.60Ghz

Graphics Card- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060

Installed Ram- 24gb ddr4 (i don't know if the ram stick that came soldered on to the motherboard is ddr4)

    CPU Speed- 3.5 GHz

Storage- 237gb SSD and 931gb HDD

    Display- 60Hz

If there is anything I missed please ask me in the comments!

Anyways the laptop itself has no damage but you can tell that it has been used.

Lastly I am planning on replacing the battery on this laptop before selling it so it has a new one since it does have problems lasting off of its charged battery life but thats its only real problem and I plan to fix it.

Please tell me below what you think a fair price is for this laptop and thank you for reading this.

here's a picture of what I'm referring to.

It's on a browser while playing a YouTube video.

It has also happened on Epic Games platform before but it's not happening anymore for some reason.
