    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Not right now
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?I'm not tech savvy so I don't exactly know myself what to put here as long as it can run the main programs I mentioned.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Thin or thick, light and heavy, I don't mind!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.See below.

    Good day!

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a laptop for all of those activities, but mainly Virtual Youtubing, gaming, drawing, and streaming. Currently, I'm using a Lenovo ideapad320 with AMD A9 7th gen). I only dabbled in music recently so I don't think a laptop that also supports music/DAW is needed right now, but I'm just mentioning it, since maybe it could be useful for consideration. Instead of a full PC build, I chose a laptop, because I move places a lot.

I would like to run OBS, Paint Tool SAI, Clip Studio Paint, and Live2D on it. I also own a pen tablet and would replace it with Huion Kamvas 13 display tablet later on for drawing. Size of canvas I'd like to use is 2000x2000 (actually 4000x4000, but maybe that's too much?)

My current considerations are Lenovo LEGION Y545, and Acer Predator (used the first once and it runs good but never test it out fully, and the latter was because another Vtuber used it for portable streaming.) I will buy it ASAP, but I'm confused by the abundant of reviews. When suggesting, if possible, please also tell me the pros and cons (from your POV).

I may or may not have asked too much, my apologies ^^; I hope to detail everything so there won't be much confusion.

Thank you for your help and replies!

Wrong sub but desperate for some advice.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:10 PM PST

    Hello,

I have ordered a dell xps 13 2 in 1 from dell.com on 28th of November. I recieved a mail from dell stating that my order is received and will soon receive a order confirmation mail.

But when I click on the "Order Status" link in mail - it states that my order is cancelled.

When I reached out to the customer service, they said that my order is cancelled due to pending verification and asked me to reach out to the verification team. After waiting for 1 hour, I still cannot pass through the telecomputer waiting stage. The verification executive cannot be connected even after waiting for so long.

I am vexed. I was wishing to own that laptop after a lot of research. But now, I dont even know the reason for cancellation and if I should place the order again.

Please advise me. Really appreciate your inputs here.

Need a new laptop to start learning 3D animation

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 01:32 AM PST

I want to start to learn 3D animation, but my current laptop is old and insufficient. I am a complete beginner, but I have the money and am looking to invest in one. I don't really have the space to build a PC. Any recommendations? £1800-£2000 budget. Not looking for touchscreen, planning to use a mouse. Battery life 5 hours or more . Planning to use blender for learning the animation

I need a laptop for digital art (U.S. up to 250$ USD)

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:01 AM PST

Hi there! I'm a digital art hobbyist and need a new laptop, the other one was sent of for repairs but the shop gave me back 250$ instead. I just need to be able to keep Discord, Krita, and Opera (1-4 tabs) open at once. I play game but they're usually on the lowest settings or not memory intensive anyways. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

-280$ USD (not too flexible on price sadly), U.S

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Yes, as long as they can ship relatively quick (around a month at most) and have a working, decent display and working parts (don't really care about scratches or other damage to the body, as long as it works)

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-I don't really care, as long as it can last for 5+ hours on battery and can keep a few programs open without lagging badly.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

-I don't want it to be to thin or light, so I don't feel like it's gonna break to easy. I don't want it to be to heavy or thick either, I'm just weak and already have to carry a heavy backpack around all day.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

-13 inches or around that size so it can fit in my laptop bag and backpack.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-The most important programs for me to run are Krita and the Sims 4, I've never had crashing problems with the programs before, it just slowed down my old laptop to much to do anything else on it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-The sims is the only game that could bring any problems, the rest are small indie games that run fine on most computers.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-The most important thing to me is a solid build, that could withstand a few drops and heavy use. Having keyboard backlighting would be great as I like to work in the dark a lot. Other than that, I like to have a number pad on my laptops, but I don't care to much about it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-The ability to run Linux (Ubuntu) as the os is also important. I don't like Chromebooks to much, but as long as I can install Ubuntu on them it's fine (I don't really have the money to nitpick)

Laptop Recommendation for Graphic Design and Audio Production

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:28 AM PST

Need some help deciding on a laptop. Been looking to upgrade an older Lenovo Yoga with an i5 and 8 gbs of RAM. Will dominantly be using it for audio recording and editing as well as working on some graphic design as a side gig.

I work from home and would like to use all my peripherals from my work setup with my new laptop, which all runs through a Dell WD19TB, so having a Thunderbolt/USB C port is pretty important. Currently that setup hooks up to 2 monitors, an audio interface, and a MIDI Keyboard.

I've had some people suggest a MacBook Pro, most all my other devices are either Google or Samsung, so wasn't sure if things would mesh really well, although from a music perspective there is definitely better software out their for Mac.

Budget is pretty flexible, since I'll just wait and save more if needed, but my initial thought was somewhere in the 800 - 1.5k range.

Let me know your thoughts or if I'm missing anything.

Help me choose between two laptops

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:09 AM PST

So I'm currently planning on buying a new laptop for personal use and was originally going to buy the Dell Latitude 3310 2-in-1 which was half price through the black friday sale. However I recently found a similar laptop by HP for £200 less with almost identical specs. Given at full price the Dell would be over twice the price of the HP model what is it about the Dell laptop that makes it better and therefore worth the value compared to the HP, is it just that its a 2-in-1 or is there something else I'm overlooking?

    Workstation/gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:49 AM PST

    Hiya!

I'm looking into what laptop I need for my work at a school I work for. I am currently working with 4K video (but will be 6K when camera is upgraded) and also work in Unity and SimLab 3D VR.

I also need to test out some VR games from time to time.

Yes I have an awesome job :P

My work currently uses HP for all their laptops. And my IT department would rather see me using something from HP, so they don't have any issues giving support when needed. But I don't think The HP Omen laptop will give me enough power. I'm afraid Hp's workstations Quadro Graphics cards won't do well with the VR gaming.

    I hope someone can help!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      3000 euros, Netherlands
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    1. Build quality, 2. Performance, 3. Batterylife, 4. Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Less weight is preferred, but no dealbreaker
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      atleast 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes. Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, IndesignUnity, Blender, Simlab VRVR gaming with an occulus Quest 2
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
VR games for educational purposes. Games like TheBody VR, Beat Saber, The Room VR. Preferably high settings and comfortable VR FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable Build Quality. Preferably not too many specific drivers (outside of Geforce I guess) so that IT will approve more easily. At least 1 USB C port.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Did any of you work in a bigger company with an IT department and tried to get a different laptop than the standard? What kind of pitfalls should I avoid or watch out for when suggesting a laptop to them?Would a GTX 3060 be enough for the next 4 years? Or do I need a better card?

    Which one should I get?

I know that the i7 here is better than the ryzen 7 but apparently that would mean sacrificing a bit of battery life, and the 5i has a 3070 instead of the 3060 the 5 pro has. But, I would be sacrificing the 2TB SSD for a 1TB SSD and the 16-inch (2560 x 1600) for a 15.6 (1920 x 1080). Which one do you say has better value?

I just need it to run smoothly while operating CSP, a good amount of storage space would be a plus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This laptop would almost exclusively be designated for drawing (hobby, nonprofessional) and occasionally steaming movies on a tv, I really just need it to be able to run Clip Studio well and have a functional HDMI port. I already have a good laptop for every day use, I just broke the HDMI port entirely and it's more convenient + not much more expensive to get a secondary laptop than to repair it.

I would be using the laptop for school, programming, Netflix, and reading textbooks. I think I could benefit from the 2 in 1 Yoga 6 for note-taking and light tablet use but I'm stuck on which to get. The laptop would need to be new, under $1200 CAD, 1 TB Harddrive, 16GB, and preferably running Ryzen 7 or above. Any other suggestions are also welcome.

    Laptop for School and Work

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

Up to $500-600 USD. Preferably more towards 500.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?**

Yes, but preferably new if possible.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

Definitely long battery life and good performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Needs to be light and thin, as I will carry around frequently.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I may play some pc games like Sims 4 or Stardew Valley. I'm a very light gamer though so it's not a priority.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm not sure, I don't know much about computer and gaming settings. But it'd be cool if games could run ok!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, touchpad, and reliable build quality is a must! I don't really need touchscreen, readers, or the such.

    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion

I'm mainly using this for basic stuff for school. I just use the internet, watch videos, and use word programs for the most part.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:*\*
      • There isn't really a budget, however it be would preferred that the first recommendations are less than $600.

    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?*\*
      • A refurbished laptop is possible but a new one is preferred.

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?*\*
      • Build quality isn't incredibly important, but it should not be outright flimsy since the laptop will be carried around a LOT. Battery Life is not important since carrying a charger around is fine. Performance matters, since large periods of time will be sitting in front of the screen, thinking and/or typing away for long periods at a time.
      • Form factor is a vague term. If features like a touchscreen, and super performance options are what form factor means, then form factor is not important. What important is that it as a functional portable laptop with a basic document typing application for long typing sessions OFFLINE.

    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*
      • Something light and thin is ideal. Lightness is more important.

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*
      • Less than or equal to 13 inches. The smaller however the better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • At most, Google Drive features, and some basic web browsing or Youtube will be used. But a majority of the time spent on this laptop is intended to be OFFLINE without an internet connection, for the sake of typing documents and writing on something like Microsoft Word, (or Pages, if this was a MacBook), or whatever the respective equivalent is.

If there are more questions please let me know.

    Legion 5 17" 3060, should I get the Ryzen 5 5600H 6 core, or the Ryzen 7 5800H 8 core? It's a $180 dollar difference and I'm trying to keep things 'cheaper-ish'

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:42 PM PST

Title says it all, been looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 (17" 3060 version) and it's really odd. The option for the 12 thread 6 core has a 1TB SSD, and the 16 thread 8 core only has 512GB SSD? The 8 core version is $180 more. Trying to figure out which one to get. I decided to go with this because of the MUX switch and the overall design, I don't really care if it's 5.5lbs I could use the workout anyway.

Both have 16gb ram, which is plenty for my average gaming needs, and both run on RTX 3060.

Version with AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600H Processor and 1TB SSD: $1,214.99 (limited time)

Version with AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800H Processor and 512GB SSD: $1,379.99 (limited time)

Work/Photo Editing Laptop Recommendation (~$1000 USD, USA)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:04 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Looking for something around ~$1000 or so. Im a little flexible around that.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Sure, I'll take a look
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Performance>Battery Life>Quality>Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?Prefer it not to be a tank of a machine
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger, the better as I have bad eye sight and its better for photo editing.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.I will be running statistics software such as R, Python, SQL, SPSS. I also do a little photo editing in photoshop/lightroom. I also might do a little audio recording with Ableton.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?I don't game much if at all.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Id like a full key board but not a huge necessity as I have a keyboard and Mouse to use with it. Must have ports though for all common IO. Ethernet, HDMI, USB, etc...
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I really appreciate your input.

MacBook Air for student/very light gamer?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:07 PM PST

Cousin wants a laptop and her budget is $900-1000. She's a student and mainly will use it for schoolwork/adobe, but she does want to occasionally play Minecraft. I am leaning towards just recommending her a MacBook since she is already heavily involved in the Apple ecosystem (IPhone, AirPods, and IPad Pro as well), will need something light (she's a commuter), and the M1 chips seem very well priced.

Are there any windows machines that are as capable in this price range? Weight/form factor is just as important as well since we're spending so much.
